A LETTER FROM YOUR

division news editor Hello Suns!

Can you believe this is the final issue of the term? It’s already March.. These past few months have been such a wonderful learning experience for me. I’ve met a lot of great people and definitely pushed myself a lot more this year. I’m really looking forward to DCON since it’s my first and last event as a Key Clubber. I’ve been in the club ever since my freshman year, and I’ve never regretted joining it one bit. It has really helped me open up to new people and given me loads of opportunities to grow as a person. I’ve developed a love for community service and I never would’ve if it wasn’t for D30S. I’ll always hold this club close to my heart. And as always, keep shining Suns!

REGION 3 CONCLAVE JANUARY 12, 2019

Tuananh Tran || Katella I remember a year ago arriving at Orange Coast College where I watched Conclave from the audience, and I can proudly say that this was my Key Club moment at the time. Fast forward to January 12th, 2019, seeing the steps that lead you into the auditorium where each of the LTG candidates would present filled me nostalgia. This was Conclave 2019, and everyone knew that it was going to be an experience to remember. I remember waking up early at 5 am to arrive early for Conclave. As one of the delegates for the event, I arrived just in time to see the Division 30 South LTG candidates: Ali AlSaleem, Kayla Kim, and Leonel Contreras. As an officer dedicated to Key Club, it was amazing to see these amazing Key Clubbers take the opportunity and take on the challenge of running our division. People from all over Region 3 gathered to see who would be their next Lieutenant Governor, and soon, it was time to enter the auditorium. Me and my fellow delegate, Amber Nguyen, were seated in the center row. One by one, each of the current LTGs came out and introduced themselves. During this time, I remember going through each one of the LTG’s literature and being in awe. Each one of the literatures were beautifully designed, illustrating their dedication and love for Key Club. As each division sent out their candidates, it was finally Division 30 South’s turn, and each of the candidates did an amazing job during their speech and caucus. It was a tough choice to choose as each of the candidates were amazing and exhibited their best; the division was eventually able to make a decision and each one of the delegates casted their vote. After intermission, the current LTG finished counting the votes and was ready to reveal who the new Lieutenant Governor for each division was. After the reveal of Division 04 West’s elect, everyone began to drumroll as Anjika announced that our 2019-2020 Lieutenant Governor was Ali Al-Saleem! Everyone cheered and welcomed our newly elected leader for Division 30 South. Just like last year's Conclave, this year was a blast and, I was excited to learn from from these amazing candidates. Though I know that this term is still not over yet, I can tell that this is an amazing start to a new term. On a final note, I want to say congratulation to the newly elected Lieutenant Governors if you are reading this and also congratulation to the candidates who participated, you guys did amazing and I wish you the best on your Key Club journey in the future!

OAKC Servathon

Natalie Melendez || Oxford Academy This past Martin Luther King Jr Day, I spent my morning at the Oxford Academy Key Club service event for the annual districtwide Servathon. On this day, students all across the Anaheim Union High School District engage in acts of service in order to give back to their community, many of which are hosted by clubs throughout all AUHSD schools. Ever since I joined Key Club during my freshman year, I’ve attended this event yearly. In 2017 we made thank-you posters for local businesses that supported Oxford Academy and its various fundraisers, and in 2018, we made dog toys for local animal shelters. I had a really great time both years and enjoyed the fact that many familiar faces joined us for a morning full of shining service. The same can be said for this year’s Servathon project. The OAKC service project this year was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to donate to local homeless shelters. Like in previous years, the room was

7

jam-packed with spirited volunteers, and this time with loaves of bread and jars of peanut butter and jelly as well. With over 40 members having shown up to engage in this act of service, the sandwich making process ran as smooth as our abundance of peanut butter. Spreading, bagging, counting. All around, Key Clubbers were making their marks in the lives of many people in need of meals. Needless to say, the event ended much earlier than expected. The enthusiasm and spirit of every single member radiated all around as we cleaned up the room and counted the total of sandwiches made to be 448. The event proved to be a success, and, in my opinion, the best one yet. I’m looking forward to attending one last OAKC Servathon event next year during my senior year, though not without a heavy heart.

JFK Brightest Sun Social Anh Tran || John F. Kennedy In a quest to encourage more members to volunteer, John F. Kennedy Key Club’s secretary had a bright idea. In order to increase member participation, he created a competition between all the classes within our club. The challenge was to complete as many volunteer hours as possible. The class with

the highest total number of hours served would win an exclusive social with food provided. The challenge would last exactly one month and in the end, our sophomore class won with over 200 hours of service. Their prize? It was a Rasin’ Canes social where chicken tenders were provided for their hard work. Winning

members were able to spend time with their peers while watching Crazy Rich Asians. Subsequent raffles were given throughout the entirety of the program and most importantly, our members had a great time! It was a great opportunity got our members to meet new people and bond with friends.

march focus background After dealing with the grueling struggles of polio, past President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt turned to advocacy. In 1938, he established the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis ─ an organization dedicated to researching the causes of polio and creating vaccines to end it; a mission, which effectively ended the polio epidemic in the United States. Following the completion of its main mission, the NIFP was rebranded as March of Dimes, with a new focus: preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Through generous funding and assistance from the U.S. public, March of Dimes has been tremendously successful in discovering the genetic causes of birth defects, promoting newborn screening for health concerns, educating medical professionals about healthy pregnancy procedures, and much more. With these things in mind, it’s abundantly clear why the Cali-Nev-Ha District has chosen to partner with March of Dimes, in hopes of bettering the lives of infants across the United States.

D L T

S

What is your favo My favorite part about DLT is getting to know all the members. Throughout this past term, every DLT meeting hasn’t been dull and each person really makes it so interesting. Serving alongside them and knowing them on a deeper level, I look forward to seeing them any time I can from our meetings to DCM’s to events. While presidents are included but also separate from DLT, the bond we have with one another allows us to lend each other an ear when we’re struggling with our deadlines or club. On top of that, we always text in our own group chat casually and it makes it so comfortable for me to be myself and represent my club in the best way. Apart from the presidents, the other DLT members are always so much fun to talk with or goof around with. We might not spend as much time with them, but they are always lending us a hand or reminding the presidents to do their jobs. This past term has taught me so much about key clubber and the experience I’ve had being apart of DLT is one I’ll treasure for a while. It’s been a blast serving with so many key-uties!

orite part of DLT?

Cont. on next page

My favorite part of DLT has to be the way we all joke around with one another. It honestly reminds me of having a little family! We always tease each other and laugh at the meetings. I feel so comfortable with them that I am able to be myself and let go of my stress when we’re together! I am so glad that I’m part of a loving and wholesome leadership team. Despite all the joking we do, we know when it’s time to get serious and work hard! We always know that work comes before play, but in all honesty, the work is really fun when it’s all of us together. I remember that I was really nervous for my first DLT meetings, but right when I arrived everyone was greeting me and welcoming me. I felt right at home, and even until now I feel like DLT has become a tiny family for me.

Jaelyn Faraone, Spirit Coordinator 16

Looking back at my memories as a Key Clubber, I am so honored to be able to say that I both started and ended my Key Club career as a member of the DLT. In freshman year, I had applied to be the Member Recognition Chair, and serving the division throughout sophomore year sparked my passion for this organization. For the first time, I was able to see that this club was not about meeting your friends or to have another impressive qualification on your college applications, but it was a LIFESTYLE. I was so amazed by how STUDENTS were making such a huge difference in their community by their united efforts. I was inspired by how a whole division could gather and become a family solely by the reason that they wanted to bring a smile on people's faces. This wasn't a joke, and DLT proved this truth to me every moment. I had always seen students stay up late or wake up early for themselves (schoolwork, extracurriculars, etc.), but Key Clubbers sacrifice themselves not for their own gain. They serve without thinking what they might get in return. That is what I love about DLT. They are a wonderful group of people that give and give and give, pour and pour and pour their all into this organization. They don't stop to think "what will they give me back?" They only want to spread love and joy, even in the moments that they themselves do not receive the same treatment. They are the exemplary servant leaders, and inspire me to work hard everyday as well as be grateful for all that I have. These people are my role models that have shaped me into who I am today.

Gloria Chang, John F. Kennedy President 17
