ltg message What’s poppin’ suns? I hope you are having the most wonderful day or evening as you are reading this! With school being less than one month away, we must remember to take care of ourselves and prepare ourselves for a successful school AND service year because service NEVER stops just like how the school grind never stops! As summer is coming to a close end, we are halfway through the second Quarter of the term and with that, I would like to personally thank you for serving more than 10,000 service hours and for raising more than 4,000 dollars for the Pediatric Trauma Program as of July 5th! Trust me when I say that you hard work, efforts, and passion do NOT go unnoticed and I personally am extremely thankful for each one of you because you all really keep the spark in me going! I cannot wait to embark on another successful month knowing that you all will be by my side. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Lieutenant Governor as it has truly been a privilege. With that, please remember to take care of yourself and always keep service in your mind and before I forget, STAY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE FIRE DIVISION 30 SOUTH MERCHANDISE THAT WILL BE DROPPING SOON!

Shinin’ With Service,

Ali Al-Sal!m

driver safety Anne Marie Viernes| Loara High School

I strongly believe that the June DCM has become one of my most memorable, favorite and noteworthy DCM’s that I have ever been to. This DCM’s theme was called Driver Safekey, which focuses on the importance of impaired driving awareness and safety. It focuses on what could potentially happen to teens if they are not aware of the fatalities on the road. For this DCM everyone was divided into several groups and asked to do different activities while also teaching a lesson. There was a scavenger hunt station, bracelet making station, card making station, hand game station and so much more. My favorite station we got to attend was the scavenger hunt station. At this station members were put into groups of four and were either impaired or unimpaired. The people who were impaired were asked to spin around ten times and asked to find the object the person asked for without touching any other item. I found the station the most interesting and fun because whenever a member touched an item they weren’t asked to, then they’d have to spin around more times. This station truly taught me that people who are impaired are more likely to become caught in an accident.

officer training conference:

training is out there!

Huy Nguyen | Western High School It was my first time being there at OTC since it was dedicated for the officers only. The event was really fun and mind- opening for me. To start off, there was a guest speaker that talked to us about his experience with Key Flub when he was in high school. He told us all different events he had and the ups and downs that he’s been through in Key Club. His passion for Key Club is still in him, even up until now and he talked about how Key Club helped him in his life. After the guest speaker, officers went to the gym to get started with the training. There were LTG’s from region 3 that were ready to show us what Key Club is about. They were professional and friendly at the same time, especially our LTG, Ali. After the introduction was the different workshops that the LTG’s have prepared for us about different problems that might occur during our term. I was able to attend 3 workshops about teamwork, public speaking, and effective communication. These 3 workshops really helped me prepare for my future journey in Key Club and in real life. After that, I was able to recap everything with the questions that LTG’s asked. As the event progressed, it was the end of OTC where the emotions came in since I felt like I just learned a lot more about Key Club and how it helped the community around me. OTC brought a feeling of helpfulness because I know that I can use my leadership skills to help improve the lives of many around me. As for the members want to go to OTC, it is highly encouraged that you try out for board since It is just for officers only. I would recommend you guys to attend this event because you won’t regret this decision.

OC Pride Parade Natalie Melendez | Oxford Academy This June I had the opportunity to volunteer at the OC Pride Parade and Festival, and apart from getting completely lost trying to find the volunteer booth at the beginning of my shift, I loved every second of it. Though I helped out at the information/ticket booth for my entire shift and didn’t get to walk around much, every moment was an experience. All around me were people decked out in rainbow gear, smiling from ear to ear as they made their way down to the festival with their significant others and friends. Pride flags gallantly waved around in the summer wind and were worn as capes, a shield of armor amidst hateful protestors who had gathered on the outskirts of the festival area. Paths of glitter sparkled against the sun, as did the glitter worn by prideful attendees on their complexions, the glitter complementing the sparkle in their eager eyes. In front of me, a rainbow colored trolley stopped every 15 minutes. It dropped off and picked up even more enthusiastic guests, taking them on rides around the festival area. As it arrived and drove away, the trolley blared music and spirit. Boarders sung along from the top of their lungs and danced like no one was watching, they hugged one another and celebrated with cries of laughter and cheer. I watched my surroundings in amazement as I sat in the comfort of the shaded information booth. Not one second did I feel mildly bored. And never before had I seen such kind and lively spirits. Several guests came up to thank us for our volunteer work, and every once in a while, drag queens made their way to our booth and struck us not only with their looks, but also captivating conversations. Needless to say, the 5 hour work shift was over in the blink of an eye. Looking back, this event has been one of the most significant ones I’ve ever attended. In today’s societal climate, it’s more important than ever to be proud of who you are, and to accept others regardless of who they love and who they identify as. The OC Pride Festival most definitely embodied that atmosphere, proving once again the power of creating strong and supportive communities. And with that, all I have left to say is see you next year Pride, thank you for providing me with one more long lasting and memorable experience.
