ALTERNATIVE TREKS TO THE TOUR DU MONT BLANC

One of the most iconic trekking journeys on the planet is the Tour du Mont Blanc, a route that takes you through the heart of the European Alps, offering stunning panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, glistening glaciers and lush valleys. The route is well-marked and relatively easy to follow, taking on average 10-12 days to complete and is easily accessible from Geneva.

We have several different options to walk in this area; Guided or Self-Guided, high-level or low-level and a family option. Accommodation can get booked up on this popular circuit; you may be lucky enough to get one of our remaining places for this year or we’d recommend booking early for 2024. If you’re still deciding, or you’ve already completed this route and would like something of a similar challenge, we have a few excellent alternatives to offer you for summer 2023.

The Alps are the most extensive mountain range in Europe covering more than 80,000 square miles, stretching across 8 countries and offering fantastic trekking opportunities. From peaceful Alpine meadows full of wildflowers to routes packed with scenic views of snow-capped peaks, impressive gorges and glaciers, there is a wealth of choice. Here are some of our favourites:

DACHSTEIN CIRCUIT TREK

Austria is home to Beguilingly pretty scenery formed by glacial activity over the millennia and there is a wealth of walking trails on offer. This fantastic alpine circuit trek rivals the Tour du Mont Blanc as you hike through magnificent alpine landscapes, staying in traditional Austrian mountain huts including the Hofpürgl (1,705m) and the Guttenberg Hut (2,147m).

EXPLORE BERNESE OBERLAND

Thrilling and exhilarating are words often used to describe the high-level experience you will receive when trekking the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Eiger, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc on the western side, and the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau on the eastern side. These trips can be combined to complete the full traverse and are the perfect first mountaineering adventures.

SECRET SWITZERLAND

Enjoy a lesser-known area of the Alps, avoiding the crowds and enjoying a complete circuit of the Gran Combin (4,314m). This route takes you deep into the unspoilt Swiss Alpine wilderness. Over 6 days of walking you will travel through high alpine meadows where edelweiss grows and trek beside one of the largest glaciers in Europe, the Glacier de Corbassière.

TREK THE TIROLERWEG

The beautiful Trans Tyrol trail (also known as the Tirolerweg) crosses from Germany to Austria through two stunning mountain regions, the Bavarian Alps and the Tyrol, linking the towns of Garmisch in Bavaria and Innsbruck in Austria. This fantastic journey includes gorges, castles and wild scenery. Accommodation is in mountain huts as well as valley hotels on this challenging but stunning trek.

HAUTE ROUTE TREKKING

This is the ultimate high Alpine trekking adventure, following the iconic Haute Route from Chamonix in France to Zermatt in Switzerland. Taking a dramatic and uncompromising line, the classic Haute Route traverses the heart of the European Alps, linking Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn with a series of high cols and impressive glaciers.

Very well organised by KE as ever. The huts were wonderful and the trails quiet. This is a beautiful trek. We barely saw anyone else the whole way round.”

Q&A WITH THE ROTHERYS

We caught up with our very loyal customers - Clare and Stephen Rothery from Lancashire who have completed a huge combined 100 KE trips between them!

100

TRIPS COMBINED!

Which trips stand out to you as highlights from the many adventures you’ve done?!

The GR20 Route in Corsica - it was a spectacular trek across the backbone of the island. We went north to south over the mountainous terrain with its airy ridges. It was hard work but our leader made it possible and we felt a real sense of elation to have completed it. Another stand out was the Bhutan Laya Trek with its four passes and all that dramatic Himalayan scenery in a very neat and tidy country.

What were your most memorable moments?

There are almost too many, but stand out moments occurred on the K2 and Concordia trek; crossing the glacial melts, which increased in size requiring the cheerful porters to semi-lift you across, seeing landslides on the road, showing the enormity of climate change, then finally arriving at K2 Basecamp and seeing the magificent K2 reveal itself

only in the last half hour. We have enjoyed walking in Morocco many times, including the AntiAtlas, multiple treks in Nepal with its legendary circuits, also smaller trips such as Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, El Hierro, Jordan, the Haute Route and Chile. We have two more trips in the pipeline and are looking forward to them - Nepal and Gran Canaria.

Why do you keep coming back to KE?

We pick KE due to the personal service given, and the fact it is based in the Lake District rather than London. We know the names of the staff and value the quality of the walking trips provided. Also the quality of every single leader we’ve ever had, with some real legends among them who have led KE trips for many years.

Thank you to Clare and Stephen from us all at KE; and we hope that you continue to enjoy exploring the world with us!

WELCOME TO THE KINGDOM OF THE POLAR BEAR.

Svalbard holds the Arctic landscapes of every explorer’s dreams; think snow-laden peaks, iconic wildlife and jaw-dropping fjords. Here at 78 degrees north, there are more polar bears than people and more glaciers than exposed land.

The majority of our adventures are based from small ships, with the exception of one trip; beach-to-beach camping via your own sea kayak.

This 10-day cruise, circumnavigating the Svalbard archipelago, includes a visit to the farthest eastern island of Kvitoya.

Covered in a solid ice cap, save for the eastern tip of the island, which has been claimed by the walruses,

SEA KAYAK, CAMP AND HIKE

Meet Chloë, our Polar expert. Along with her degree in Wildlife Biology, Chloë found our Svalbard Hike and Sail adventure to be the perfect mix of serenity and safari, in a relatively untouched part of the world.

Splitting the day between sea kayaking and hiking, this is a truly low impact way to explore the Isfjorden area of Svalbard. This is suitable for beginners with a thirst for adventure. As a small group with your guide, you will be camping and meal prepping together.

we’ll get the chance to view these endearing creatures up close. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore off ship daily, and chances to hike on the islands of Svalbard.

NORTH SPITSBERGEN

Experience this awe-inspiring world from the calm of our 3 mast schooner, the beautiful Rembrandt van Rijn. With a maximum of 33 passengers this really does feel like a more personal experience. Highlights include exploring the north of Spitsbergen and viewing the impressive Monaco Glacier.

LEADER OF THE YEAR

There are many elements which make an adventure unforgettable, but one of the most vital is a passionate guide - someone who’ll be there to help get you to the top of the mountain, into the heart of their culture. Most importantly they will be there to support you every step of the way. Each year we ask our travellers to tell us why their leader should be Leader of the Year, and so - drumroll pleasehere is this year’s winner.

He has enjoyed hiking from an early age and in 2010 he formed a group called the Jordan Hiking Society. In 2012 he gained his official tour guide license and since then has led continuously for KE.

Murad is a guide on our Jordan Family Adventure, Wadi Rum and Petra, and The Ultimate Jordan Adventure, but his speciality is the best-selling Dana to Petra Trek, which he has led over 30 times.

Murad has always had great feedback and was runner-up for KE Leader of the Year in 2017. Throughout 2022, he received an overwhelming number of votes, along with consistently excellent feedback.

A well-deserved winner of this year’s award! KE also gave Murad vouchers to treat himself to some new outdoor gear.

Meet Tim. He is KE’s Operations Manager and looks after all of our Leaders and Ground Agents around the world. He’s spent years leading trips himself, trekking, climbing and biking all over the world, with some of his favourite adventures being to Tajikistan, and climbing Mgoun in winter in Morocco.

Murad’s passion for his country and for nature is evident from the very first meeting. Extremely knowledgeable and experienced, Murad spares no effort in making his groups’ experience of Jordan the best it can be.

PATAGONIA

Patagonia is a vast, remote wilderness of soaring jagged mountains, jaw-dropping scenery, turquoise lakes and breath-taking glaciers; it has one of the lowest densities of population on Earth and is blessed with some of the most incredible scenery on the planet. The wildlife spotting opportunities are rich: you may see guanaco, South American grey fox, Darwin’s rhea and even the elusive puma. Magnificent Andean condors, with their enormous wing span, soar overhead. For trekkers, it is paradise, with the classic ‘O’ trek, considered to be one

of the best in the world, offering the complete circumnavigation of the Paine Massif and the ‘W’ trek offering a shorter but equally rewarding route.

Hiking in Patagonia is on wellmarked and well maintained trails. The weather can be very changeable; four seasons in one day is not uncommon. The main hiking areas are well set up with refugios (mountain huts) and campsites along the walking routes.

Los Glaciares National Park is in Argentina. It is home to some of the world’s only advancing

glaciers; the vast Perito Moreno Glacier is an impressive sight rising nearly 60 metres above the water and with huge chunks of ice continuously crashing into the lake.

Torres del Paine is located in Chile and is famous for its iconic skyline - the towers rising from a deep glacial lake.

Our Patagonian trips are led by expert guides and allow plenty of time for key highlights. Optional extensions are also available to explore other places, including Iguazu Falls and Tierra del Fuego.

Meet James, he’s our Product Manager and expert on Latin America. He’s a qualified International Mountain Leader and has trekked extensively through north and south Patagonia, with Torres del Paine National Park being a favourite.

“UNQUESTIONABLY THE BEST PATAGONIA TREKKING ITINERARY AVAILABLE - Patagonia… nothing prepares you for the experience you are about to have. It’s a wild and wonderful place and this itinerary provides a comprehensive and mind-blowing visual feast.”

Christopher from Ripon | Spires and Ice Trekking Patagonia

THE ‘W’ TREK

This is a trip to remember; you will experience the rugged beauty of both the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park. You’ll visit the Perito Moreno Glacier, walk to the viewpoint at the trail head of Laguna des Los Tres, where we have great views of Mount Fitz Roy and take in the view of Cerro Torre. Accommodation is in traditional refugios and estancias, taking full advantage of the scenery.

THE ‘O’ TREK

You will explore this wild region seeing incredible scenery, walking the famed ‘O’ trek around the Paine massif, enjoying the spectacular views as you cross the John Gardner pass as well as lakes, glaciers and valleys. This is a longer trek and exceptionally rewarding. You’ll enjoy the sight of the Torres del Paine towers from Valle Ascencio, one of the most iconic viewpoints in South America.

WELCOME TO THE HIMALAYA

“FANTASTIC TREK - This was a brilliant trek through beautiful forests, by rocky turquoise streams and with magnificent views of snowy peaks. Service was five star.”

Sarah from Stourbridge | NAN

Extending 2,400 kilometres west to east through India, Nepal and Bhutan, the Himalaya is the world’s premier mountain range and its high valleys, peaks and passes provide the setting for many of the world’s great treks.

KE groups have travelled these trails for almost 4 decades and amongst our extensive range of Himalayan adventure holidays there are many at a reasonable level of difficulty that work well for first-time Himalayan trekkers or for anyone looking for a not-too-strenuous trek. These holidays (KE Grade 5 or lower) will typically include days of 4 to 6 hours walking and will not go much above 4,000 metres elevation.

They may be traditional-style, full-service camping trips such as our Nanda Devi Trek in the Indian district of Garhwal. Or, like our Everest Panorama Trek in Nepal’s popular Khumbu region, our groups overnight in simple lodges. Others, like our Annapurna and Bandipur Luxury Lodge Trek, are based in upgraded lodges with many of the comforts of home. Alternatively, if you choose our Festivals of Bhutan trip, your Himalayan adventure could be hotel and lodge-based. This trip will include less trekking and more time exploring the temples and monasteries and attending one of the famed colourful festivals of this isolated Buddhist kingdom.

Meet Kit, he’s KE’s expert on the Himalaya and has been part of the KE team since 1988. He’s travelled extensively all over the world, but Nepal’s wild western district of Dolpo will always be one of his favourites.

NANDA DEVI

India, Camping

Trekking between the tributaries of the Ganges, from one great valley to the next, this trek crosses alpine meadows and high ridges with extraordinary views of the peaks of the Nanda Devi and Panch Chuli groups. Visits to several villages and shepherd camps add cultural interest and help to make this a wholly memorable holiday in an area visited by few adventure travellers.

ANNAPURNA AND BANDIPUR

Nepal, Luxury Lodges

Providing the perfect introduction to trekking in Nepal, this holiday includes sightseeing in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Bandipur and 6 days of easy-paced low-level trekking through the pretty valleys and villages of the Annapurna foothills. Staying in comfortable and characterful lodges with twin-share rooms and en-suite facilities, the stunning mountain views will be the icing on the cake.

FESTIVALS OF BHUTAN

Bhutan, Hotels and Lodges

Travelling across Bhutan from Paro and the Taktsang Monastery in the west, to Jakar in the central region of Bumthang, there’s a lot packed into this special Himalayan holiday. You’ll see many of Bhutan’s iconic sights and visit several of its temples and monasteries. Each of the departures is timed to coincide with one of the country’s celebrated Buddhist festivals.

“ENLIGHTENING, AWESOME ADVENTURE THROUGH JORDAN -

An interview with awardwinning journalist Ben Lerwil

Ben is a freelance writer specialising in travel. He’s been published in more than 50 publications, including National Geographic Traveller, The Sunday Times, BBC Countryfile and The Guardian, and has won various awards along the way. He’s also a cricket fan, a (slow) runner and a children’s author, writing a number of non-fiction books about wildlife and the wider world. He lives in Oxfordshire with his wife, kids and a sporadically obedient dog.

What made you want to become a travel journalist?

I did a postgraduate course in magazine journalism in my twenties. I remember picking up an old copy of Wanderlust Magazine and having a lightbulb moment. Travel was already a passion by then, thanks to a few backpacking trips, so when I realised that it might be possible to combine the writing and the travel, I threw myself at it.

You’ve done a few trips now with KE, which is your favourite and why?

It would be hard to top the Choquequirao Trail in Peru. Being off-grid for that long - and in such spectacular mountain surrounds – made it a really immersive experience. I remember it being hard going at times, but the sense of freedom and discovery was huge. And as a writer, there was so much culture and history to get my teeth into.

What was your most memorable moment when you travelled on our High Peaks of the Balkans holiday?

The moment that comes to mind is the evening we crossed from Kosovo back into Albania. I remember cresting a ridge and seeing this huge

wild plateau below, dotted with horses and a couple of farmsteads. We ended up bedding down at one of the farm cottages, having been lulled to sleep by shots of homemade raki.

You travelled on our Self-Guided Brittany holiday when you wrote for the Guardian. How would you compare travelling self-guided compared to when you joined our guided walking holiday to Choquequirao in Peru?

I travel independently quite a lot, so I really enjoyed the self-guided element. But of course the main differences were in the destinations themselves. Brittany’s Gulf of Morbihan is somewhere for slowing down and relishing the smaller details – the birdsong, the island walks, the local cider! – whereas the Peru trip was one of those blockbuster Andes experiences.

Where is your ultimate destination to visit?

Let’s go with the Scottish islands. I just adore the freedom of being out there and having a few days ahead of me to hike and explore. There’s so much history in places like Orkney and Shetland, and the wildlife’s another big draw – I love the otters, the eagles, the seabird colonies. Plus the scenery’s off the scale. Mull might be my overall favourite, but I love the Outer Hebrides too.

Why do you like to write about KE?

I love walking, so that’s one of the main reasons! KE offers good value too, in my opinion, and you can be almost certain you’re going to meet like-minded folks on a guided group trip. The Peru hike must be a decade ago now, but I can still picture almost everyone that was in our little group. It bonds you.

4 REASONS TO VISIT THE OKAVANGO

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a unique and breathtaking destination and is one of the most biodiverse areas in Africa - a paradise of lagoons, plains and lush forests.

It is home to some of the world’s most endangered species, including the black rhino and the African wild dog.

A visit to the Okavango Delta is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers adventure, education and appreciation of the natural world.

WALKING SAFARIS AND MOKORO CANOES

Unlike other safari tours which are mostly by vehicle, when you are in the Okavango Delta on a KE holiday, you’ll paddle gently along in mokoro canoes and enjoy walking safaris during the day with your expert guides. You’ll stay in campsites away from the main tourist areas to give you the best possible opportunities to spot incredible wildlife and witness nature everywhere you look.

RICH AND DIVERSE WILDLIFE AREAS

The watery conditions make the delta one of the richest and most diverse wildlife areas in the whole of Africa. It has created a very successful habitat for the endangered cheetah, wild dog and lion. Through careful management, the Okavango has become one of the best places to see wildlife in Africa.

BIRDLIFE

It’s not all about the endangered mammals here, the Okavanga Delta is home to around 450 species of bird, including red-billed hornbills, African jacana and the impressive African fish-eagle, as well as the critically endangered wattled crane – the tallest crane in Africa. Travelling peacefully by canoe through the lagoons and waterways offers a wealth of bird-spotting opportunities.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

In 2014 the Okavango Delta was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Okavango is one of the world’s largest inland deltas. The water from the Angola Highlands does not flow to the sea but evaporates as it drains into the Kalahari Basin. This makes it a unique environment.

VISIT MOROCCO

Morocco is unlike anywhere else on earth. It’s a melting pot of different cultures, languages and religions, with a rich history, diverse landscape and hospitality that is warm, welcoming and generous.

The country is home to many stunning natural wonders, including the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains. These mountains provide a rewarding experience for trekkers, with trails that wind through traditional Berber villages, past waterfalls and deep gorges.

Morocco’s bustling markets, or souks, are unique, offering a wide range of traditional crafts, textiles, and culinary delights. Typically located in the old medinas of the cities and towns, they aren’t just a place to shop, but a hub of social activity. The vibrant colours, smells, and sounds of the souks create a unique sensory experience.

GRADES EXPLAINED

With such a variety of trips, we’ve always tried to have a clear grading system to help you find the best trip for your fitness and experience. Each holiday is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most difficult. Our simple, colour-coded grade symbol provides an indication of the difficulty of each trip.

GRADE 1 TO 3LEISURELY

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

Many of our small boat cruises in the Amazon and Galapagos start at grade 1, where you can choose whether or not to get involved with shore activities. A grade 3 might be a gentle walk through Italian vineyards with the odd slope to combat, but nothing too strenuous.

GRADE 4 TO 6MODERATE

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

The undulating coastal path along the Cinque Terre is a good example of a grade 4 trip. The days aren’t too long, but the route does involve a good amount of ascent. Mount Toubkal in Morocco represents a great example of a Grade 6 trek, achievable for a weekend walker with a good level of fitness.

GRADE 7 TO 9CHALLENGING

Physically challenging holidays, where you need to be prepared before you go

Grade 7 trips are often longer covering more miles a day, such as the classic Paine Circuit in Patagonia. By the time you get to grade 8 and 9, the trip lengths expand and each day becomes more challenging. These grades cover bucket list adventures such as Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp.

GRADE 10 TO 12TOUGH

Our toughest holidays involving many long days are often in isolated areas. A high level of fitness and previous wilderness and mountain experience is essential.

The Bhutan Thunder Dragon Ride, at grade 10, is a sheer test of physical resolve through tough and remote conditions. Grade 11 and 12 really is reserved for challenges such as Aconcagua, South America’s highest mountain, at a staggering 6,962 metres.

WAYS TO TRAVEL

WHY KE?

With nearly 40 years of experience operating active adventure holidays and with 400 different trips to choose from in 100 countries, there are many reasons to book with KE. Here are a few:

EXPERIENCED & APPROACHABLE

KE team members travel regularly on our trips with customers, so we have a wealth of first-hand experience of the trips that we sell and operate. In our free time you will find most of us walking, running or cycling amongst the fells of the Lake District, literally in our back yard. We live and breathe adventure and love the outdoors. Next time you are in the Lakes, pop in to see us. We’ll put the kettle on!

VALUE FOR MONEY

We offer a quality product, which we aim to provide at a price which is fair and competitive in the market place. Our headline selling price is not always the cheapest and we make no apologies for that. Sometimes our trips are slightly longer than other operators, to allow for acclimatisation and a better success rate on tougher trips. We also tend to include more in the price, whether that be meals or excursions. We do not increase our prices in order to offer discounts; our aim is to always offer a fair price to all KE travellers.

TRUSTED

We are trusted by our customers to get things right, which is why so many come back and travel with us time and time again. We are fully bonded through ABTA and have an ATOL license issued by the Civil Aviation authority which covers all flight inclusive packages. Put simply, your money is 100% protected when you book with KE.

GREAT REVIEWS

Our customers tell us that we are getting things right in their feedback, and in the reviews that they leave. We have a 97% excellent score on independent AITO reviews, and an overall rating of 95% on our own online reviews. We are proud of the feedback we get, but are not complacent and are continually looking for ways to improve.

EXPERT LEADERS

All of our Guided Group trips are accompanied from start to end by a professional leader. The majority are local to the country in which you travel, but wherever they are from, KE leaders are recruited and vetted by our team in Keswick, and undergo a rigorous training programme.

WONDERFUL WAY OF SEEING MADEIRA

This holiday was first-class and we would highly recommend it. Having done guided holidays only we were a bit unsure about what self-guided meant, really it means you have the best of being supported, routes planned, hotels sorted, luggage moved, highlights planned and if anything did go wrong you have a team in the area who can help you (we did not need them, but hugely reassuring).
