Letter from Keirsey Dear Friend, Welcome! Glad to have you here. June’s leader of the month is J.W. Marriott Jr., a Guardian Protector ISFJ. We call them the Serving Leaders. These leaders have earned the right to this name because of their hardworking nature and their passion to serve others. They are sacrificial and devoted to a life of service. Serving Leaders are kind, warmhearted, and the way they lead is by taking on a servant’s posture. There’s a lot we can learn and appreciate about these soft spoken, but impactful leaders. This month, we also continue in our exploration of money matters by looking at the pitfalls which keep us from saving. With our feature on love, dating, sex, and romance, we’re going to take a closer look at why it’s hard for the rest of us when dealing with Guardians. One in every two people are Guardian, so understanding them is essential for life. Finally, in this issue, we are pleased to introduce a regular segment on Faith, Spirituality, and Religion. We hope that the inclusion of this important topic will raise your spirits, and challenge you to look at life through a different lens each month. Thanks for joining us in the discussion!

All the Best,

Why It’s Hard for the Rest of Us to Date Guardians Guardians make up most men and women on the planet. What are some misdynamics that Idealists, Artisans, and Rationals should know about when dating them?

5

Keirsey

Dating & Relationships

A

pproximately 45% of the population

are Guardians. That means that nearly every other person you meet is a Guardian. Someone in your family is likely to be a Guardian. Throughout your life, you will work with many Guardians. Chances are, you will date a Guardian, and may even marry one. They’re everywhere, and so we’d say that it’s important to know how to relate to them, especially if you aren’t a Guardian. So, let’s learn how to do this right.

Keirsey

6

Dating & Relationships

G

uardians seek closure, while

Artisans like to keep their options open. Guardians are conservative, and value tradition. Artisans are liberal, and want to break the mold. Guardians seek to settle down. Artisans want to remain as free birds. Guardians value safety, security,

GUARDIAN TAME

and stability. Artisans look for danger, flirt the edge, and are unpredictable. Guardians are tame, Artisans are wild. Guardians find comfort in familiarity and routine, and Artisans are always looking for something new and different.

7

Keirsey

Dating & Relationships

S

o can this work? Well, about half the

world are Guardians, and about a third are Artisans. These two types make up the majority, and so you will often find them together. As Artisans grow up, they think that one day that they will grow out of their desire to mess around, and eventually become responsible and respectable. But, the truth is, Artisans never grow up. They learn to

Clashes with an Artisan

smirk from early on, as they pursue wild adventures, and the same smirk follows them all the way throughout their lives. The Artisan bad-boy, or the Artisan wild-girl cannot be tamed.

Clashes with a Rational

G

uardians go step-by-step, while

Rationals figure out the system, so that they can skip-the-steps. Guardians follow the rules, and go with the tried and true. Rationals say, “better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. Guardians examine the details. Rationals look at the big picture. Guardians like to establish routines, and are allergic to change. Rationals seek to innovate, and to be agents of change. Guardians want to belong. Rationals are highly autonomous. Guardians want to do things right, Rationals challenge the way things have always been done.

GUARDIAN Step-by-Step

9

Keirsey

Dating & Relationships

S

o can this work? Well, Guardians

are the majority, and Rationals are the rarest of all. They are the most diametrically opposite. Guardians are concrete, they have normal everyday conversations, talking about work, play, family, home, sports, news, the weather—asking, “Who? What? Where? When? How much?” While Rationals engage in intense, intellectual discourse, theorizing, philosophizing, talking about beliefs and ideas, asking, “What if?” or,

RATIONAL Skip-the-Steps

“Why not?” This can be rather difficult, because Guardians and Rationals are from two entirely different planets.

Keirsey

10

Dating & Relationships

G

uardians are practical. Idealists are

fanciful—often lost in their dreams and fairy tales. Guardians live in reality with both feet on the ground, while Idealists float high above the clouds, preferring to reside in their ideality of imagination. Guardians live in compartments. They have partitions which separate work friends, play friends, church friends,

GUARDIAN Practical

and family life. Idealists merge it all together, where they seek to be best friends with everyone. Guardians work hard to cultivate a relationship, while Idealists prefer it to be organic.

11

Keirsey

Dating & Relationships

S

o can this work?

Well, both

Guardians and Idealists want to be cooperative. But, their underlying motivations are different. Guardians seek to do what is right, that is to obey the rules, and live according to the law. Idealists have a different view of what is right. Rather than legalities, they are driven by their feelings. They are guided by their conscience rather than the law.

Clashes with an Idealist

Both are concerned with belonging, but for different reasons. Guardians see belonging as a social need, whereas Idealists see it as a place to connect.

IDEALIST Fanciful

Keirsey

12

Dating & Relationships

Guardian with a Guardian

G

uardians live by the motto, “Fail

to prepare, prepare to fail. And so prepared spontaneity makes sense for them. While being unprepared can be an opportunity for adventure for an Artisan, a chance to be creative for the Rational, and a possibility for a whirlwind of romance for the Idealist, for the Guardian, being unprepared can make them feel anxious, pressured, nervous, or worried. They fear the unknown and believe that things are set up to go wrong unless one does something deliberate to make it go right.

GUARDIAN Preparation

13

Keirsey

Dating & Relationships

S

o can this work?

Well, for the

Guardian, preparation is the greatest way to control what could otherwise be an inevitable outcome of disaster. When Guardians are together, the rest of us may look on and wonder if the relationship is boring, but for two Guardians, taking control is what guarantees success. What could have been a disaster now has a chance for victory. And two Guardians get that about each other. And they can

GUARDIAN Success

gladly look at everyone else with a smile and say, “Our relationship is failsafe because we’re prepared!”

Portrait of a Leader

Portrait of a Leader J.W. Marriott Jr.

The Serving Leader Guardian Protector ISFJ Over the course of 40 years, J.W. Marriott Jr. took his family business to become the most well known name in the hospitality industry. The Marriott company employs more than 360,000

16 15

associates, who serve in 4100 hotels worldwide, this global giant has made a significant impact on the way we experience the world.

Portrait of a Leader

1

Serving Leaders are wholeheartedly devoted to their mission in life. Wholeheartedness was a character quality instilled into J.W. Marriott, Jr. “Bill” from early on. Bill recalls how his father mentored him as a youngster, “My father gave me the responsibility of a man… He would tell me what he wanted done, but never said much about how to do it. It was up to me to find out for myself.” Bill came from a devout Mormon family, and followed in his father’s footsteps. Devotion was

drilled into his character every step of the way from the family farm, to the restaurants, hotel businesses, and through the missionary work he did as a part of his faith tradition. His father was gregarious and outgoing, while Bill is more of a shy and private man. In the midst of being different, Bill was encouraged to be his own man, and to develop a deep sense of mission in life, and to be devoted to his work. Keirsey

16

Portrait of a Leader

2

Serving Leaders are faithful in small things, and make incremental progress. Bill grew up with a keen awareness of humble beginnings. He knew the value of being faithful in small things. The Marriott company rose from a small root beer stand in Washington D.C. in 1927 to a chain of family restaurants by 1932, to its first motel in 1957. He became the President of the family business in 1964 at the age of thirtytwo, and eventually CEO in 1972, and through his leadership, took the

17

Keirsey

Marriott family business to become the most recognized name in the hospitality industry. Bill emerged as a leader with an understanding that all good things start off small. Even after the company grew to include hundreds of restaurants and hotels, Bill and his father J. Willard Marriott traveled together often to personally inspect every establishment they operated, paying close attention to the smallest details.

Portrait of a Leader

3

Serving Leaders never forget that they are ultimately serving a greater purpose.

His mother, Alice Marriott, remarked that her son always pushed himself to work doubly hard to prove himself. His father J. Willard Sr., created a solid foundation for him to build on, and neither of them wanted Bill to live under his father’s shadow. Bill certainly proved himself by taking the Marriott company to heights unimaginable by any standard of measure. Marriott encompasses 4,100 hotels around

the world, and more than 360,000 associates, with $3.6 billion in revenue for 2014. Yet, in all of his success, he has always seen his life as serving a greater purpose. Bill has served actively in his church as a bishop, and his missionary work extends beyond his church leadership to his business. A Book of Mormon is placed in every Marriott Hotel room.

Keirsey

18

Portrait of a Leader

4

Serving Leaders are crystal clear on the moral compass they hold to be most preeminent. Bill has financially prospered and accumulated more than what most human beings have ever seen in life. And yet, he has said, “I can state without hesitation that material wealth has nothing to do with happiness, but is usually the case of great unhappiness. Happiness comes from the inner peace and spiritual strength we can build up within us, from serving the Lord, and obeying his commandments, from doing right, and from the love of our family. And it comes from serving and

19

Keirsey

helping others.” In addition to tithing and volunteering in his church, Bill has given much time and money to many noteworthy causes, and has invested significantly in education. Bill was always a family man, he has said, “Family has always been number one in my life… Family over work. It’s how our family business has grown, how we keep our associates and why Marriott is recognized as ‘One of The Best Places to Work.’ Putting family first is good for business.”

Portrait of a Leader

5

Serving Leaders do their work as an example for others to emulate. For over four decades as CEO of the hotel chain that bears his family name, Bill Marriott was known for his hands on style of running the business that he called, “management by walking around.” He would say to his associates, “See and be seen. Get out of your office, walk the talk, make yourself visible and accessible.” He made it a point to demonstrate leadership by being present. He was a leader who cared for his people. He said, “Take good

care of your associates, and they’ll take good care of your customers.” Whenever there was anything that he wanted his associates to emulate, he set the example by being the first to lead by action and not just by words. He believed in leading by listening. He has said, “I try to remember that as long as I’m talking, I can’t be learning about the problem, and if I don’t know about it, how can I help solve it?”

Spirituality

Faith, Spirituality, Religion S

ome of the most memorable discussions we’ve had with Dr. Keirsey

pertained to people’s different approaches to their faith, spirituality, or religion. When it comes to these areas, there are so many different ways that people identify themselves. Some refer to themselves as “religious,” some as “not religious,” then there’s “spiritual, but not religious,” a “person of faith,” and let’s not forget about the “atheist,” or “agnostic.” Some get right down to the specific labels of designation, by identifying themselves with a certain religious group (i.e. Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, etc.) and you can even go further to specify whether you are conservative, liberal, orthodox, charismatic, or mainstream within most religious groups. At Keirsey, our research indicates that depending on your temperament, you are likely to approach faith, spirituality, or religion differently.

Let’s Roll The Dice A

rtisans are the 2nd most unlikely temperament to belong to a religious organization. They value their personal freedom, and do not want to subject themselves to any prescribed ways of living their lives. Rules and restrictions feel imprisoning for them. By nature, Artisans seek adventure, pleasure and want to be thrilled and challenged. Sitting still to listen to someone telling them what they should and shouldn’t do feels extremely confining for these folks. Whether there is a heaven or hell, or any kind of reality beyond the grave is not something they think about often. They are so ever engaged in the present, that there is little or no time for contemplating what can’t be seen. These types want to live to the fullest in the here and now, and prefer to roll the dice on whether there’s a place to go after life is over.

27

Spirituality

Seeking Approval G

uardians are the most likely temperament to belong to a religious organization. They value safety, security, stability, and reliability. A prescription for living is a comforting road map for how to live daily. Knowing that there is a higher power that governs a chaotic world allows them to sleep at night. By nature, Guardians seek to belong, and want to know that their conduct is in line with that which is appropriate and fitting. They have respect for authority, and believe that it must be earned. Listening to someone who has diligently studied what they have not is appealing to them. They believe in a moral order, where behavior is right or wrong, and they seek to be on the right side. They strive to move up in society, and receiving approval is a step toward being ultimately approved by the Highest Authority. Keirsey

28

Spirituality

One Love I

dealists are the 2nd most likely temperament to belong to a religious organization. However, they are also likely to identify themselves to be “spiritual, but not religious.” They value harmony, peace, and love. They pay close attention to their feelings, nurturing their souls, caring for people’s hearts, and believing in the potential of the human spirit. By nature, Idealists seek to be compassionate and desire to connect. Idealist’s live by faith, hope, and love. They forever believe in their dreams. Sitting at the feet of the sage, and sharing in a communal experience is a part of daily living. They believe in the goodness of everyone, and seek to draw it out. They are inclined to come alongside another, and are patient with the troublesome and the hurting, believing that love can transform anything.

It’s All Made Up R

ationals are the most unlikely temperament to belong to a religious organization. (Ironically, Rationals lead some of the largest ones in the world.) They value their autonomy, seeking to be self-sufficient; that is, to call their own shots. By nature, Rationals seek knowledge, are driven by purpose, and make decisions by reason. They are generally skeptical and have no interest in listening to anyone speak about anything that does not make sense to them. They will however, welcome insightful inquiry that informs their knowledge base. They desire to unravel the mysteries of the universe, and have curious minds. If they subscribe to a belief in some kind of higher power, they are likely to do so because they can make sense of an intelligent design. Otherwise, they are likely to see such belief systems as being all made up. Keirsey

Why You Do What You Do…

When It Comes to Money How Artisans, Guardians, Idealists, and Rationals think about money.

33

Keirsey

Finance

D

o you wish you had more money? We did a study on temperament and finance, and found that 98% answered, “Yes,” to this question. (What a surprise!) The reasons for wanting more, and the importance of money to an individual varied. But, almost everyone said they wished they had more. Financial advisors agree that, “It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you save.” The trouble is that saving money is often not as easy as it seems. Why is that? Well, depending on your temperament, we have a natural bent toward understanding and approaching money. You are you, for better or for worse, and your natural approach can help you or handicap you. In this article, we’re going to provide you with insight on why you do what you do when it comes to money.

Keirsey

34

Finance

The Artisan “Don’t Let It Get Too Out of Control”

A

rtisans are impulsive. They love pleasure, enjoy extravagance, and like to play it big—and very few live by a budget. They are the best at making and spending money quickly and easily. Among the four temperaments, they are very loose with their wallets, and the worst at saving. Why is this the case? Artisans are highly adaptable and can make anything work. If they have a lot, they are bold in generosity, if they have a little, they figure out a way to get more. Artisans thrive in chaos, and are optimistic about the future. An unpredictable future keeps things exciting. So, this allows them to live carefree, without a fear in the world. Though they may want to save, they don’t because there is no immediate payoff in putting it away. Their only fear is living a boring life, and falling into a routine of monotony. Artisans would rather make it and spend it than

35

Keirsey

count it. They can negotiate themselves in and out of financial prosperity and debt. So, what you have is an individual who pays very little attention to what they have or don’t have, and someone who is audacious in their lifestyle. As long as an Artisan doesn’t let the uncontrollable get too out of control, they will do just fine.

Finance

The Guardian “A Little Bit Here, A Little Bit There”

G

uardians are bean counters. They are cost cutters, bargain shoppers, discount seekers, and much more budget conscious than others. They are the natural savers in life. Among the four temperaments, they have the tightest hold on their purses, making them the best at saving money. Why is this the case? Guardians value safety and security. Therefore, not having enough makes them feel unsafe and insecure. Guardians fear the unknown, and can be pessimistic about the future. So, this drives them to save wherever they can, whenever they can, in order to create some predictability for the unknown. Saving money gives them something to hold on to that makes them feel safer and more secure, while combating their fears about an uncertain, gloomy future. Guardians are excellent at keeping track, and are excellent at

measuring the value of something, so they hate to overpay for anything. So, what you have is an individual who likes to pay close attention to their money, and someone who is frugal in their spending. Guardians like to save “a little bit here, and a little bit there.” Over time, a little becomes a lot, and it compounds to be even more.

Keirsey

36

Finance

The Idealist “Money Is Good, Not Evil”

I

dealists are romantic. They yearn for connection, to live meaningfully, and to make a difference. Budgets may or may not be a part of their life. It really depends on whether someone they trust has ever taught them how to live by one. Among the four temperaments, they are, however, the least likely to be aware of what they have (or don’t have). Why is this the case? Idealists want their lives to be marked by compassion for others, to be rich in spirit, and to live authentically from the soul. Therefore, there’s a feeling that bringing money into the equation in their interactions with others somehow taints their life or the relationship. When they work, “what they do” is an outflow of “who they are,” so negotiating and receiving payment for “who they are” often feels like it somehow takes away from their authenticity. Saving money for themselves conflicts with their desire

37

Keirsey

to be centered on others; it feels selfish. When Idealists can understand that making money and saving money are good and not evil, and that money can be used to make a meaningful difference in the world, they can then be free to make it, save it, and use it for good.

Finance

The Rational “Multiple Channels of Wealth”

R

ationals are builders. They are big picture oriented, analytical, and objective. They manage their money well, but not so much in a line-by-line, budgetary way. Whenever they invest their brain, energy, and time they expect a return. Among the four temperaments, they are the best at creating multiple channels of wealth. Why is this the case? Rationals build systems, and when one system is built and running smoothly, they build another one. When one dies, they build another one. They are not natural savers, but rather, natural creators. Instead of saving and counting their money, they figure out ways to generate various money making channels. So, instead of putting money away, they will use it to build something that will pay off for an objective they have in mind. Rationals predict the future by deliberately creating the future

they desire. So, they worry very little, because they don’t see themselves as victims in an uncontrollable world. Their view of the future is not pessimistic or optimistic, instead, they see the future as something yet to be created by them. So what you have is an individual who saves by building channels of wealth, and then allocating those channels for certain purposes as they see fit.

Anatomy of a Serving Leader

Do You Serve? The Anatomy of a Serving Leader Guardian Protector ISFJ Serving Leaders are eager to be available. They are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work when called upon. They have an attitude that says, “Whatever, whenever, I am here to serve. Serving Leaders take great pride in being dependable, and feel best when they are contributing to help others. What are Serving Leaders like? Can you be one? This month we celebrate Serving Leaders.

Keirsey

42

Anatomy of a Serving Leader

Serving Leaders are eager to learn and put it into action Serving Leaders want to help in whatever ways they can by making full use of what they have learned. Their efforts to learn thoroughly pays off not only when they are carrying out a role they have been authorized for, but it also yields great benefits when they are teaching others. When someone is rising through the ranks, and a Serving Leader is called upon to take on the role of a teacher, they can

43

Keirsey

recount in great detail all that they have learned. They approach their protĂŠgĂŠ meticulously, making sure that they pass on what they have learned with accuracy. Serving Leaders want to learn thoroughly, practice what they have learned correctly, and methodically teach what they have learned to those below them. From the outset, if a Serving Leader finds an organization that fosters learning, they thrive.

Anatomy of a Serving Leader

Serving Leaders do best when they find others to share the workload Serving Leaders feel best when their community of colleagues values equitability and fairness. When each member serves equally with their time and everyone has a workload that is appropriate, they feel at peace. When people show lack of concern, are lazy, or irresponsible, it can become extremely irritating, and can even become distressing for some. To prevent this from happening, effective Serving Leaders make it a habit to communicate their feelings, and to do

so directly from the start. Holding on to negativity can often be easier than to confront others with one’s true feelings. Effective Serving Leaders are mindful of this. They have a keen sense of awareness of their feelings and make concerted efforts to break through the temptation to stay quiet, rather than allowing themselves to be broken by resentment. These individuals serve best when they find others to serve with who are just as dedicated as they are.

Keirsey

44

Anatomy of a Serving Leader

Serving Leaders nurture others who need help Serving Leaders are natural at nurturing those in need. They are sensitive to the hurting, and to anyone who is disadvantaged. Whether it is physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual, they offer sympathy as well as their hand of support by providing practical solutions. Serving Leaders pass on nurture in a gentle way, characterized by kindness, and tenderness. Due to

45

Keirsey

their attentive nature, Serving Leaders are able to readily identify those who need their help. When they see someone hurting, they are ready to respond in any way they can to alleviate the suffering. They are always rooting for the underdog, and feel that it is their duty to come alongside the helpless to offer whatever they can to assist. The more they invest in others, the better

Serving Leaders establish themselves as great examples for others to follow Serving Leaders roll up their sleeves and just do what needs to get done. When they are diligently performing their duties they feel deep contentment. When they are committed to serving, their life is others-centered and no longer self-centered. They see faithful service as the means by which they will earn greater responsibility, leading to greater rewards. To be an exemplary leader, effective Serving Leaders

find ways to balance service with replenishment. This often goes against the grain of their nature, for they feel best about themselves when they are self-sacrificing. Self-renewal feels selfish for these individuals, but when they can understand that taking time for renewing themselves allows them to be more effective, they have found the secret they need for a lifetime of service.

Anatomy of a Serving Leader

Serving Leaders do whatever needs to be done without giving regard to their status These naturally quiet helpers make the greatest difference when they disregard other’s opinions of them, and they simply serve. When they are engaged in such acts of service, the goal is no longer to receive approval, but to make an impact. Their service is based on integrity and not insecurity. When Serving Leaders take action in this manner, others take notice, for their service flows out of a genuineness, which is hard not to notice. This allows

47

Keirsey

them to focus on doing right, rather than focusing on a need for recognition. Serving Leaders understand that character is built on faithfulness in the small, unnoticed, unglamorous actions they take, even when nobody may ever see it. When Serving Leaders do not care about status, they make an impact whether they are serving out in front, or from behind the scenes.
