Kamp Kiwanis Kamp Kiwanis, located in Taberg, NY (Central Lakes division), is a camp that is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all children; children with special needs and those without. This means that children with special needs won't feel like they're “different” or “separate” from the “normal” kids. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. It is non-competitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are encouraged.

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center

What is KPTC? The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center has allied with three different hospital's in New York state (Long Island, Albany and Buffalo) in order to save the lives of children and reduce or eliminate disabilities due to trauma. Within one year, injuries to children 14 and under result in 223,000 hospitalizations, nearly 8.7 emergency room visits, and over 12 million to physician's offices. 120,000 of these children are permanently disabled. At least 25% of these children could be helped with the establishment of a fully staffed, optimally equipped pediatric trauma center, supported by appropriately trained out patient care providers and safety programs. Kiwanis' alliance with these hospitals demonstrates the huge commitment that is needed in money and staff through these pediatric trauma centers.

Safe Kid Worldwide is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to educating parents and children about safety. It provides safety devices to families in need and advocating for better laws to help keep children safe and healthy. You can be one of these safe kid's educators because education is such a powerful tool. You can make a positive impact on the world by teaching lesson plans on one of these subjects: 9-1-1 Emergencies, Hand Washing, Fire Safety, Bike Safety, Pedestrian Safety, and Water Safety. If you would like to be one of these educators, contact the District Project Chair, Kathryn Graves, to get trained to do so: graves.nycki@gmail.com, 516-510-9144.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease (KPLD) What is Lyme Disease? Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. This affects the brain in many ways, most commonly, a disturbance in cognition (thinking).Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. Those who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long term problems while those who aren't treated right away may have a more complicated course. Sadly, treatment for Lyme disease is very expensive and often times, not covered by most insurance companies. As of January 2007, the KPLD foundation has paid approximately $140,000 for pediatric treatment for those with this growing disease. While we are focusing on funding for pediatric treatment, remember that any person can be infected for weeks, months, years or even a lifetime. The rash that comes along with it is ugly! (Google it at your own expense!)

How can we help KPLD? We can all help by donating towards the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. Funding should be the last reason why a child should have to live his or her's life any differently in comparison to any other child without Lyme Disease. The Brittany Fellowship Medallion and Plaque award is named after a 16 year-old girl who is engaged in a long and difficult battle since the age of two because of Lyme disease. In April 1998, she suffered a setback and was removed from school for two years. There were times when she her fragile body would slump to the floor in a fetal position, limp and exhausted. Today, Brittany is intravenously treated for about 45 minutes daily and takes prescription drugs routinely. The weekly costs of these drugs range from $800 to $1,000. There is no cure for her and this is her life, complicated at best. To receive this award to support Lyme disease and to recognize an outstanding LTG, club, district, member, officer or individual, go organize a fundraiser and donate $500 to the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation.

The New York District of Circle K International was awarded this award on November 19 th, 2011. The money raised was through two different Kiwanis Family fundraisers. One was the K-Family picnic which was held in July of 2011 and the second was a bowl-a-thon that was held in October of 2011. Together, we were able to raise $720 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. For more information, contact myself or John Gridley, the NY Kiwanis Governor during 2000-2001 who brought Lyme Disease to Kiwanis' attention and vowed to do something to help these children.
