Word from the committee! Howdy New York District!

A word from Kat...

We are so lucky to have each branch of the

Kiwanis family! So many clubs on college campuses have just that, a club. We have as much support as we need from Kiwanis, Aktion clubs, other Circle Ks, Key Clubs, Builders Clubs, and K-Kids. We are not only a club, but a family. It is so important to have our family behind us; out family supports everything we do. Kiwanis members are so encouraging and there to help. It is always an amazing feeling when you host an event and not only do other Circle Ker's come, but also Kiwanians, and K-Kids. We have the option to meet even more fantastic people from Kiwanis to K-Kids.

Fellowship and the K-Fam Contact Info: Fellowship. It is the glue that holds this organization together. Circle K is so much more than a “collegiate service organization.” It is a family. In a sense, the K-Fam can be called the “extended family” of Circle K. Unlike real life extended families, members of the K-Fam are lucky enough to see each other on more than just holidays! Personally, I have found that connections made through the Kiwanis family are incredible. There is nothing like bonding with a Key Clubber, and talking about all the amazing service projects being done by clubs in KCI. Living in NYC and going to school on Long Island, I have had many opportunities to meet Key Clubbers in different divisions. The excitement and energy of these members is something that we should all strive for in CKI. It is important to talk to Key Clubbers and make an effort to demonstrate the incredible opportunities afforded by continuing involvement in CKI after high school. They are an integral part of the future of our organization. Fellowship in the K-Fam is not only restricted to KCI and CKI. Some of the coolest people in the Kiwanis family are K-Kids! I have bonded with K-Kids over service projects and subsequently been inspired by their dedication and enthusiasm. It is amazing what you can gain from friendships with people that are both older & younger than you. At the end of the day, no matter what part of the K-Fam you hail from, we are all family. Fellowship is not just a tenet of Circle K. It is a tenet of life.

Get to know the K-Fam! K-Kids is the youngest and fastest growing service organization for elementary students worldwide. It is a “student-led” community-service organization, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body. It's motto is “We Build,” and its objectives are to provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community, to develop leadership potential, to foster and develop a strong moral character and to encouraged loyalty to school, community, and nation.

Builders Club is the largest service organization for middle school and junior high students, with more than 40,000 members worldwide. Members learn to work together and develop servant-leaders skills as they serve their school and community. It operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body. It's motto is “Building Leaders” and it's vision is to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.

Key Club International is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership on the high school level. It's vision is to develop competent, capable, and caring leaders through the vehicle of service. It's motto is “caring-our way of life” and it holds the core values of leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness (the equivalence of CKI's three tenets).

Get to know the K-Fam! (cont.) Circle K International is the premier collegiate community service, leadership development, and fellowship organization in the world. There are more than 12,600 CKI members worldwide, with 500 clubs in 17 countries. CKI members embrace the motto- live to serve, love to serve by collectively completing over 1 million service hours each year in their communities and college campuses. CKI members also work with its four service partners- Better World Books, March of Dimes, Students Team Up to Fight Hunger and UNICEF. This is one of the three tenets CKI members abides by, service. CKI also provides resources, tools and opportunities for members to attend inspiring events and conventions so that they become better leaders; this is the leadership tenet of CKI. Most importantly, CKI members work together to plan service projects and make friends with fellow CKI members from around the world; this is the fellowship tenet of CKI.

Aktion Club members consist of over 9,000 adults with disabilities around the world that are involved with this amazing K-Family, developing leadership skills while working with others to serve those in need. Their projects range from fundraising for Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) to recycling drives to cleaning up parks. Members are empowered to be themselves, work together with friends and implement plans through action. They are an extension of Kiwanis International and they share the mission of serving children around the world.

Kiwanis International is an organization with service at its heart. There are clubs located in 80 nations and each Kiwanis club works to help their own communities in countless ways. Clubs work together so that members can achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. KI focuses on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. They also sponsor all other branches of the K-Family to reach out to more people and to have a greater impact.

CKI and other branches!

If you read the brief descriptions of each branch of the K-Family, you should have noticed that it seemed rather repetitive. This is because all these clubs are part of a family- the Kiwanis family. The first sentence of each description had the word service in it. While preforming an incredible amount of service as a family, we are also developing leaders as we are working together, creating friends and building fellowships. We must remember this as we are planning our service projects because we can all work together and truly be a part of this family. Each member from each branch of the family has something unique to offer and we as Circle K members, have something special to give to each member of the K-Family.

From KCI to CKI! Transitioning from school to school, club to club is rarely ever an easy-going thing. As excited as you may be, chances are, you will be nervous because you will not know what to expect. Well, the transition from Key Club to Circle K should not be on your list of worries. Circle K is just like Key Club in the sense that we are selflessness individuals who love to serve

leaders and building fellowships. “I remember joining Key Club this past year because some of my friends were in it. Since then, I've learned the value of community service and friendship, and I have gained friends that turned into my family. I will never forget my times with them, and I hope to continue my service in college through Circle K. I will serve my community and forge new friendships, while still keeping in touch with my family through Circle K events and meetings. Joining Circle K this year at NYU will allow me to continue to feed my passion for helping others, and hopefully will be a great experience for me in general!” - Eric Zucaro

They say that Key Club is a very big family. When families break apart there is a tremendous amount of pain that is felt. That is how I feel right now. I have been a part of this family for four years. There have been ups and downs. Yet, this was the best experience of high school. As the days count down to graduation, so do my days as a Key Clubber. It is the successes that make me want to remain in Key Club forever. I came to love Key Club through the people I worked with. My older friends who have long graduated high school were my board members when I was a freshman. They created an environment where I could express my feelings without any shame. I came to love being with them in the work they did. When time came for them to go to college, I found myself in their shoes. I began to see that their love for the community soon became mine. It was not just the people we helped but also the kindness we received. The Kiwanis family now has its roots in me. I want to stay in it for as long as possible. Honestly, I am a little nervous joining Circle K. It will be joining Key Club all over again. I am excited to work with different projects though. I know that even though I might be doing something different, the goal is the same. I might not be following the motto "Caring - Our Way of Life" but "Live to Serve, Love to Serve" sounds just as great. I know Circle K will be just as great as Key Club. I will make the best of every moment of it. −

I guess Jensen doesn't know that March of Dimes is one of CKI's service partners!

From KCI to CKI (cont.)

Hello Circle K members, My name is Carla Pacheco and I am currently the LTG of Division 8-A of the NYDKC. I am about 3 months into my term and I have already had the honor of working with such amazing people. I have met not just many more Key Clubbers just also Circle K members and Kiwanians. As LTG, I have not only created my own events but attend many events of many Key Clubs in my division. Key Club to those of you who have never heard of it is exactly like Circle K but in high school. We host events, volunteer at soup kitchens, walks, Kiwanis events, have district conventions and have club officers as well as district officers. This year Key Club has paired up with UNICEF in order to fundraise and raise awareness for a new International project- The EliMiNaTe

The K-fam raises money for the same causes!

Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Just as LTG Carla was speaking about, MNT kills one baby every 9 minutes and nearly 60,000 newborns per year. For as little as $1.80, you can pay for a vaccine that saves the mother and her unborn child(ren). This is a project that all the branches of the K-Fam are working on

leadership and fair play. For $535, you will be giving a child who would never be able to have this experience, the opportunity to receive that experience at Kamp Kiwanis. The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center supports pediatric trauma efforts at hospitals as well as programs throughout the area to protect the safety of children and to improve the ability of local emergency officials to respond when needed. You can help by fundraising for KPTC to help keep a fully staffed, optimally equipped pediatric trauma center. You could also put together a trauma kit to meet the needs of children!

The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Project was set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with Lyme Disease. This is a disease caused by bacteria which is usually transmitted by deer tick. Lyme disease affect the brain in its disturbance in thinking, headaches, mood swings, depressions, irritability and marked fatigue. Treatment for this is expensive and usually not covered by insurance companies so let's help fundraise for this project together!

Finally... Wondering what's up with the colors and the Ninja Turtles? Well if you were at ICON this year, you might be able to take a guess that the reasoning behind this random Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme is because... TMNT was cleverly used to stand for “Terminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus by the Ca-Nev-Ha District. Isn't that so awesome? Ok...well I did, sorry if you got sick of these 4 colors and the turtles but it did have to do with The EliMiNaTe Project!
