Happy July NYCKI! I hope you’ve enjoyed the first month of summer and have many stories to share already. About 20 of us just came home from Vancouver and would love to exchange stories with you! This issue of Stick with Nyck News shall serve as a recap of Large Scale Service Project as well as International Convention. Of course, nothing written or shown in photos can ever do justice when explaining such an amazing event. If you missed out this year, be sure to join us next year in Nashville, Tennessee (where transportation is easier and cheaper for most of us!) This summer I encourage you to reach of to Key Clubbers because they are a member of our KFamily and potential Circle K members! Throughout the month of June, I invested an extended amount of time to speaking to/visiting Key Clubs at meetings, service projects and celebratory events. I can say that it was definitely a worthwhile experience knowing that I provided advice they sought and simply to make a presence, representing Circle K. Finally, you will notice that select 2012-2013 district board members were recognized as distinguished and LIU Post and Adelphi University took home awards. For the 2013-2014 year I want to encourage all of us to apply for more district and international awards. Information on this to come!

From June 23rd – June 26th, 165 members attended LSSP to do service in our host city, Vancouver. Each attendee had a part in building two playgrounds under CKI’s new Vision Partner, Landscape Structures Incorporated. This is a company that teamed up with Habitat Systems to organize, design and build playgrounds that accommodate to the needs of all children. They see the value of sensory play and design playgrounds that all children to grow and interact during play. It is inclusive because it provides opportunities for handicapped children and enhances play for children with Autism. Attendee’s did lots of lifting, digging, bolting, measuring, installing and cement pouring to complete the playground build. In addition to building the playground, we got to work and play with the children at the school. This added to the value of our work because we got to see whom exactly we were benefitting. The kids had a special assembly thanking us (cutest thing ever!) In addition to working on the playground, various groups did other projects such as completing 2 years worth of gardening at the Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver, various cleanups, organizing food at Quest Food Exchange, working on the farm under Edible Gardens and removing/cleaning parts at an old playground. Finally, this was on top of all the fellowship activities organized. We had friendly competitions, team cheers, in-house service projects, team dinners, an Amazing Race and more!
Congratulations to the 2012-2013 District Governor Corey Oses, District Secretary Kathryn Graves and Lieutenant Governor Kelly Chan on being recognized as distinguished! Congratulations to LIU Post of 1st Place in Single Service and Adelphi for 2nd Place T-shirt contest and in The Eliminate Project.
Member of the Month Spotlight – May! Each month, the clubs report a Member of the Month through the Monthly Report Forms. These members have gone “above and beyond” and shown extreme dedicate to service, leadership and fellowship within their clubs.
International Convention Recap: From June 26th – June 29th, immediately following LSSP, nearly 300 members from CKI gathered to expand on their CKI knowledge at ICON. We attended various workshops to educate us on leadership positions, service projects, The Eliminate Project, fellowship ideas and so much more. One of the workshops allowed us to plan and execute a project to feed the homeless in Vancouver! In addition to this we had the chance to voice our opinions at House of Delegates and vote on the new International Board. We also attended many sessions, listening to many inspiration speeches. Some of these sessions were combined with Kiwanis to enhance K-Family relations. Finally, we all got the chance to listen to International President, Josephine Luktio’s farewell speech and congratulate her for a great year! NYCKI also traveled more miles to convention than any other district and was awarded for this! For more information and details, ask one of the attendee’s!
