STICK WITH NYCK NEWS

This is Nyck, our district mascot!

On the left is Steven Jacoby, my advisor at Bayside High School Key Club. On the right is my current Circle K faculty advisor at Queens College. They allow me to see school as an outlet for opportunity and I can’t thank them enough for all the support they have given me throughout my 6 years (going on 7th) in the Kiwanis Family.

Happy end of Spring 2013 NYCKI! My name is Kelly Chan and I am privileged to serve as your 2013-2014 District Governor. Thank you for reading the first issue of Stick with Nyck News and for serving as such a dedicated member. Without you and your club, our district cannot accomplish all that we anticipate for this great year ahead. In this monthly newsletter, you will be updated on the events and accomplishments that we complete together. I joined the Kiwanis family my junior year at Bayside High School reluctantly. I had no idea the impact it would leave on me and I am beyond thankful for the journey it has given me thus far. It has taught me to be a selfless servant leader and it has taught me to Care to Be Aware. I invite you to create your own meaning to this phrase. Are you aware of the issues in your campus? Are you aware that as a result of Superstorm Sandy, there are still 39,000 families remaining displaced in New Jersey and 250 families in New York? What are the issues that you care about and how will you act upon them? This is my governor’s project: to be a part of the initiative your club is taking on as well as completing and recording at least one act of kindness per week. I hope that this resource as well our many other initiatives will bridge the gap between the district and club level. Keep being you and until next time!

The 2013-2014 District Project is…

NYCKI Health Initiatives:

Get Happy, Get Healthy Feel tired too often? Getting healthy can give you more energy and stamina to do more with your beautiful lives. There has been a study in Germany that has proven that individuals who ran two 3-minute sprints with a 2-minute break in between learned new words 20% faster than those at rest. This is because the blood is flowing and there is more oxygen going to your brain. It also spurs growth in the area of your brain that control multitasking, memory and planning. Of course, this initiative encompasses a health mental health as well. Support programs to increase self-esteem, fight depression and promote positivity. May is mental health awareness month! Thus, get happy, get healthy and encourage others to as well! Suggested activities from the district board include:

1. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause for 15-25 year olds. Support organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention/attend the Out of the Darkness walks. 2. Educate members and people around you about healthy alternatives 3. Hold a divisional fitness challenge 4. Hold sport fundraisers/tournaments (dodge ball, kickball, volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee) 5. Support Operation Beautiful and leave positive messages in random places for people to smile 6. Host a Hunger Awareness/Famine event 7. Host a field day (it can be a fundraiser or social!) 8. Support organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, etc. 9. Advocate for healthier options in your dining hall 10. Donate the money you would regularly spend on junk food to the local Food Bank/Pantry Binghamton CKI at Out of the Darkness! 11.
