IP REPORT

The typeface used throughout the project is Renner ArchiType. Renner is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner in 1939. The images included in my application are my own.

PROJECT BRIEF/ INTRODUCTION

The objective of this project was to create a walking/ wandering mobile application intended for visitors of Fredonia. This application was to point out unique “must see locations within a walking or biking distance. The application was intended to have a direct path that someone would follow to the set locations.

CONCEPTUAL STRATEGIES

I chose my color pallet based off my inspiration, I also wanted something bright that would draw more interest rather than a plain map. Originally I only had the plain map that I made in mapbox but it wasn’t excited to work on the rest of the app so I changed it drastically. I chose to use a geometric typeface over a serif typeface because a serif just wouldn’t have been appropriate; my app is more modern and has a lot going on and need something more strait forward.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

A design strategy I used was the creation of the navigation bar. The navigation bar helps the user to navigate the app without confusion. The navigation bar is also a clean way to display the other functions that the app can do. I used universal symbols instead of words on each screen so that there would be less clutter and they weren’t necessary.

EVALUATION

14

My process began with a walk starting from Barker Commons. From there I walked around downtown Fredonia and along the way pick places that I thought would be interesting to go to if you were a tourist visiting Fredonia. The locations I chose are also unique to Fredonia as in they aren’t a chain, you can only find them here. From Barker Commons I went to the Darwin R. Barker Library and Historical Museum, then The Upper Crust, The White Inn, DeJohn’s Italian Pizzeria, and finished at the Fredonia Opera House. After I had a path I began researching the history of each location. This step was important because the information I found was going to be the text used on my walking application. At this point I began the creative process of making my map. I started by using mapbox, this website helped me because it gave me the proper sizing of streets and a true sense of how far locations are from one another. After marking my locations and making the path I had a finished map, but I just thought it was boring and a typical map that could be found on Google. So I decided to look up maps that are more creative and had more interest. I found one that I really liked; she made a map that was of New York City, which showed different building that had been built on the land throughout time. I used this map as inspiration for my map; I stared by making organic shapes that were also somewhat geometric because they have sharp points. I changed the opacity of the shapes so that you would be able to see the different layers under each other, also so you could see the way the color changed by what is under and above it. This effect also helped give the illusion of depth. I have created more depth by putting a small drop shadow on the streets and a larger drop shadow on my path, this helped them pop off the page and draw more attention to them.

I then began to create the rest of the app, beginning with the home screen. For the home screen I used the map for the background without the streets. Also on the home screen I had the app name and below that three symbols: map, destinations, and information. I then created a map screen, which was my map as the full screen and then I had a bar at the top of the page to help you navigate the app. The bar has for symbols, the three on the home screen and then a home symbol. My next screen was the destinations; this page has a picture of each location and the navigation bar at the top. For the background on this page and the rest of them I used the map without the streets like the home screen but I put a blur on it and added another layer of an orange color that is in the map and turned the opacity down so that you could still see the map but it was toned down so that it wouldn’t distract from the information. The rest of my pages were the information pages. Each destination had its own page; on the pages there is a zoomed in version of the map to make you see more clearly where each location is. Below the map is the address of the destination and then below that is the information. And each of these pages also have the navigation her at the top. Overall I’m very pleased with my app. My favorite part of the app is the map; I think it’s the highlight of the app. I don’t think I would change anything about. If I had to make changes I would probably consider a different typeface. I don’t really have a logical reason for choosing Renner as the typeface other than I like it but I also like that its geometric and I think it goes to well with the sharper points in the map. I’m also not completely happy with my destinations page. I like the pictures but I wish that I were able to have the names of the places on the page so that they would be visible, but I was able to find a solution I was happy with.
