SKYRMIONS — A THEORY OF NUCLEI by Nicholas S Manton (University of Cambridge, UK) Skyrmions — A Theory of Nuclei surveys 60 years of research into the brilliant and imaginative idea of Tony Skyrme that atomic nuclei can be modelled as topologically stable states, known as Skyrmions, in an effective quantum field theory of pions. Skyrme theory emerges as a low-energy approximation to the more fundamental theory of quarks and gluons — quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Skyrmions give spatial structure to the protons and neutrons inside nuclei, and capture the interactions of these basic particles, allowing them to partially merge. Skyrme theory also gives a topological explanation for the conservation of baryon number, a fundamental principle of physics. More details on Page 8

STOCKS, BONDS, AND THE INVESTMENT HORIZON Decision-Making for the Long Run by Haim Levy (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) A century ago, life expectancy was roughly 40 years, hence saving for retirement was not an important economic issue. Nowadays, life expectancy exceeds 80 years in many countries, and one should expect to live and consume many years after retirement. Thus, optimizing investments and savings for retirement, with a long planned investment horizon, has become an issue of crucial importance. More details on Page 34

The Conflict Between Science and Religion and How it Led to the Secular Age
BOOKS
by Ira Mark Egdall (University of Miami, USA & Nova Southeastern University, USA & Florida International University, USA)
The second half of the book presents the theoretical foundation of space plasma physics, from kinetic theory of plasma through the formation of moment equations and derivation of magnetohydrodynamic theory of plasmas. The validity of this theory is elucidated, and two-fluid theory is presented in more detail. This is followed by a brief analysis of fluid boundaries, with Earth’s magnetopause and bow shock as examples. The main emphasis is on the presentation of fluid and kinetic wave theory, deriving the relevant wave modes in a high temperature space plasma. Plasma instability is the most important topic in all applications and is discussed separately, including a section on thermal fluctuations. These theories are applied to the most interesting problems in space plasma physics, collisionless reconnection and collisionless shock waves with references provided.

SKYRMIONS — A THEORY OF NUCLEI
BOOKS
by Nicholas S Manton (University of Cambridge, UK)
The Quantum Physics of Emergent Magnetic Monopoles
The book summarises the particle and field theory background, then presents Skyrme field theory together with the mathematics needed to understand it. Many beautiful and surprisingly symmetric Skyrmions are described and illustrated in colour. Quantized Skyrmion motion models the momentum, energy and spin of nuclei, and also their isospin, the quantum number distinguishing protons and neutrons. Skyrmion vibrations also need to be quantized, and the book reviews how the complicated energy spectra of several nuclei, including Carbon-12 and Oxygen-16, are accurately modelled by rotational/vibrational states of Skyrmions. A later chapter explores variants of Skyrme theory, incorporating mesons heavier than pions, and extending the basic theory to include particles like kaons that contain strange quarks.
by Carlo A Trugenberger (SwissScientific Technologies SA, Switzerland) This book is about the physical effects of such emergent magnetic monopoles. These range from a new mechanism for local, strong pairing of electrons possibly relevant for high-T superconductivity, to the formation of a new quantum phase of matter when monopoles condense. In such a condensate the electric interaction becomes extremely strong, so much so that only extended neutral states survive, with the consequence of an infinite resistance, even at finite temperatures. This state, called a superinsulator, is a dual superconductor and has been experimentally detected in various materials. In a superinsulator the electric interaction becomes analogous to the strong interaction holding quarks together in colour-neutral hadrons. Even more interesting is the case when the condensate carries both magnetic and electric charge. The ensuing state has properties that are strikingly reminiscent of the mysterious pseudogap state of high-T superconductors. Magnetic monopoles might thus have been hiding in plain sight where no one was looking for them for a long time.
Contents: Introduction; Fields and Particles; Lagrangians and Symmetries; Skyrme Theory; Quantization of Skyrmions; Skyrmions with Higher B – Massless Pions; Rigid-Body Skyrmion Quantization; Skyrmions with Higher B – Massive Pions; Skyrmions with Even B; Skyrmion Deformations and Vibrations; Modelling Oxygen-16; Modelling Calcium-40; Electromagnetic Transition Strengths; Variants of Skyrme Theory; The Sakai – Sugimoto Model.
Featured Contents: Introduction; Gauge Theories and Magnetic Monopoles: A First Encounter with Superinsulators; Gauge Theories in (2+1) Dimensions: The Chern – Simons Term; Lattice Chern – Simons Term; Saddle Points, Topological Excitations and Instantons; Effective Chern – Simons Gauge Theories of Emergent Condensed Matter Systems; and others.

BOOKS
An equality between inertial and gravitational masses was established by Galileo Galilei more than 400 years ago and was accepted by Albert Einstein as a key point of his theory of gravitation — General Relativity. The above mentioned equality is called the Equivalence Principle. In this pioneering book, some unusual situations are described, where the Equivalence Principle is theoretically broken, and the possible experiments, where such breakdowns can be observed, are discussed in a brief. It is known that, in standard situations, the Equivalence Principle is extremely well established on Earth and in space in numerous experiments, including experiments during the recent space mission MICROSCOPE. Therefore, this book suggests a real breakthrough in the better understanding of Einstein’s gravitational theory and its relation to quantum mechanics, which is a definite step towards the so-called “Theory of Everything”. This book is recommended for all readers who are interested in gravitation and General Relativity.

LECTURES ON LINEAR ALGEBRA
BOOKS
by Donald S Passman (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA)
Textbook
The book consists of expanded notes of an upper level linear algebra course the author offered. Each section, or lecture, covers about a week’s worth of material and includes a mixture of exercises of interest. So it feels like a series of lectures that is very readable. The notes cover all the basics of linear algebra but from a mature point of view. The author starts by briefly discussing fields and use these axioms to define and explain vector spaces, then carefully explores the relationship between linear transformations and matrices in an easy to understand manner. Determinants are introduced as volume functions and ways to determine whether vectors are linearly independent. Also included is a full chapter on bilinear forms and a brief chapter on infinite dimensional spaces.

by Noboru Nakanishi (Kyoto University, Japan) & Kenji Seto (Hokkai-Gakuen University, Japan)
by Alfred S Posamentier & Arthur D Kramer (City University of New York, USA) The book offers 101 mathematical gems, some of which may require a modicum of high school mathematics and others, just a desire to carefully apply oneself to the ideas. Many folks have spent years encountering mathematical terms, symbols, relationships and other esoteric expressions. Their origins and their meanings may never have been revealed, such as the symbols +, -, =, π. ∞, √, ∑, and many others. This book provides a delightful insight into the origin of mathematical symbols and popular theorems such as the Pythagorean Theorem and the Fibonacci Sequence, common mathematical mistakes and curiosities, intriguing number relationships, and some of the different mathematical procedures in various countries. The book uses a historical and cultural approach to the topics, which enhances the subject matter and greatly adds to its appeal. The mathematical material can, therefore, be more fully appreciated and understood by anyone who has a curiosity and interest in mathematics, especially if in their past experience they were expected to simply accept ideas and concepts without a clear understanding of their origins and meaning.

This book is written for students and researchers who are fond of mathematics and the natural sciences. It consists of two parts. Part I presents the theory of analysis in which the mathematical theory is described not as an accomplished palace, but as a building under construction. It uncovers how a theory has been or is being constructed. In Part II, the theory of differential equations is applied to interesting practical problems, such as pursuit-line and tractrix, attack on an object from an airplane, an insect crawling along a stretching rubber rod, the SIR model of a virus infection, string vibration, circular membrane vibration, as well as the wind ripple, sand dune and wave phenomena on a highway. Furthermore, the problems of a one-dimensional lattice vibration, the keyboard percussion vibration and the eigenvalue problems in quantum mechanics, such as the Aharonov – Bohm effect, are also investigated in detail.

L1 Retrotransposons as a Source of Genetic Diversity
This book summarizes our work on environmental enrichment, a housing condition for laboratory animals, recapitulating an active lifestyle by providing a complex physical, social, and cognitive stimulations. Environmental enrichment exerts a wide range of benefits on energy balance, cancer, immunity, stress, behavior, and healthy aging. One underlying mechanism is the activation of a specific neuroendocrine brain-adipocyte axis with brain-derived neurotrophic factor as the key brain mediator. This book integrates recent discoveries regarding mechanisms, mediators, and biomarkers of environmental enrichment, and discusses its translational potential.
edited by Abram Gabriel (Rutgers University, USA)
BOOKS
This volume explores an array of diseases in humans associated with L1 retrotransposon movement within the human genome, including some cancers such as colon cancer and neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. The chapters explore the diversity of retrotransposons, their different biological mechanisms, the role of L1 in their movement, and their contribution to human diseases. This book posits that somatic events caused by retrotransposons have implications for mosaicism and are often associated with cancers. This book is intended to be used as a basis for developing courses in entrepreneurial finance. While many universities, particularly in the United States, have entrepreneurial finance on their curriculum, there is often a gap between the large selection of entrepreneurship courses and courses providing applicable hard skills in finance and accounting. Early-stage ventures cannot succeed without capital and careful management of cash flow for example. Entrepreneurs need skills, such as how to negotiate with investors, so that they don’t end up giving up the control of their venture too early. This book aims to fill this gap by providing guidelines for how successful courses can be set up to train finance, accounting, and corporate strategy students for a career in the start-up and venture capital industry.
What is causing the shoulder pain? How does one prepare for arthroscopic shoulder surgery? What is adequate subacromial decompression? How does one stabilize the lax capsule in the Asian shoulder? Which of the many suture configurations should one use for the many tear morphologies?

BOOKS
Human resources are the most important and costliest assets in businesses of any nature and size, no matter where they are based in the world. Talent management is a key managerial function in MNCs and other organizations with a global presence, but its importance in small businesses and startups cannot be overlooked.
This book provides scientific evidence, both theoretically and empirically, on the understudied field of women entrepreneurs across North Africa. It provides insights on the domain of women entrepreneurship, undertaking critical assessment of overall historical frameworks, ecosystems and future perspectives of the region.
At its most basic level, managing people in small businesses encompasses compliance with the applicable labor laws, hiring, and creating a channel for dealing with employee issues. The price of not having the right employees in a small business can be extremely high. Workers who are inefficient or in the wrong role can have critical consequences on the sustainability of a small business. While most entrepreneurs focus on marketing, finance, operations, and customers in their initial stages, this means that they at times fail to establish and address their HR function and the associated challenges that, if overcome, may help the organization to meet all of its targets. This book aims to highlight these HR challenges and shed new light on how to answer them.
Women entrepreneurship is among the most important and unexploited sources of economic growth in the developing world. Yet, despite much progress in socioeconomic aspects such as health, life expectancy and education, the gender economic gap remains unchanged. More needs to be done to understand the underlying forces and factors in the region to challenge the current status quo. Readership: Academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students interested in women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in the North African region, government officials interested in developing policies to encourage women entrepreneurship, and students and teachers of entrepreneurship, women studies and developmental policy courses.
Readership: Academic researchers across the globe studying Entrepreneurship, especially in the context of SMEs and Startups; can be adopted in postgraduate courses as many new programmes on entrepreneurship and startups are being established that require students to undertake an in-depth study of the field. 300pp 978-981-123-920-5

A Companion to Data Science
edited by Çaǧdaş Hakan Aladağ (Hacettepe University, Turkey) & Nihan Potas (Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University, Turkey)
by Hian Ann & Christopher Ting (Hiroshima University, Japan) This book champions a fundamental principle of science — objective reproducibility of evidence independently by others. From a companion web site, readers can download many easy-to-understand Python programs and real-world data. Independently, readers can draw for themselves the figures in the book. Even so, readers are encouraged to run the statistical tests described as examples to verify their own results against what the book claims.
In the modern world, data is a vital asset for any organization, regardless of industry or size. The world is built upon data. However, data without knowledge is useless. The aim of this book, briefly, is to introduce new approaches that can be used to shape and forecast the future by combining the two disciplines of Statistics and Economics. Readers of Modeling and Advanced Techniques in Modern Economics can find valuable information from a diverse group of experts on topics such as finance, econometric models, stochastic financial models and machine learning, and application of models to financial and macroeconomic data. Featured Contents: Smart Growth Developments of Europe Union Members by Europe 2020 Strategies (şahika Gökmen and Johan Lyhagen); Spatial Regression Model Specification and Measurement Errors (Anıl Eralp and Rukiye Dağalp); Determining the Harmonic Fluctuations in Food Inflation (Yılmaz Akdi, Kamil Demirberk Ünlü, Cem Baş, Yunus Emre Karamanoğlu); Nonlinear and Chaotic Time Series Analysis (Baki Ünal and Çağdaş Hakan Aladağ); and others.

This book covers some topics that are seldom discussed in other textbooks. They include the methods to adjust for dividend payment and stock splits, how to reproduce a stock market index such as Nikkei 225 index, and so on. By running the Python programs provided, readers can verify their results against the data published by free data resources such as Yahoo! finance. Though practical, this book provides detailed proofs of propositions such as why certain estimators are unbiased, how the ubiquitous normal distribution is derived from the first principles, and so on.

Transformations in Banking, Finance and Regulation

FINANCE WITH A PURPOSE
FinTech, Development and Financial Inclusion in the Global Economy
Singapore’s FinTech journey has been a story of relentless pursuit of excellence to build a global financial service hub with limited means and lots of aspirations. The slogan of “Dream big. Start small. Move fast” has rallied regulators, startups, investors, corporates and everyone else to achieve a common goal.
BOOKS
by Frederic de Mariz (Columbia University, USA) This book tells the story of entrepreneurs, companies, investors, researchers and regulators who are building the financial services of tomorrow and the mechanisms that will allow us as a society to fulfill the promise of inclusion. There are still challenges to overcome, particularly high levels of informality, subpar quality in financial services, and low levels of financial education. Regulators play a crucial role to foster inclusion, proposing sandboxes and stepping up their efforts against risks triggered by technology such as monopolistic behavior, consumer protection and cybercrime.
Singapore attracts people across the region to build their ventures in the domains of finance and technology. This book traces Singapore’s journey from 2015 till today starting with establishment of regional hubs and globalisation of FinTech innovation. The key principles which established Singapore as a FinTech Nation have been an obsession with excellence referred to as RFFL (Right First, Fast Later), a unique model of economic and legal policies known as Singanomics and lastly, an organised and controlled model of a new idea development termed Garden Innovation.
Finance with a Purpose combines the theory in the fields of economics, finance and law with the practice of financial institutions, corporates, households and investors. By combining the latest academic research with ample professional experience in emerging markets, this book is essential for policymakers, scholars, and any reader who wants to understand the recent progress in financial inclusion and how it can be used to alleviate inequality and foster economic development.

SHAKING UP MEASURES OF CONSUMER ECONOMIC WELL-BEING
PUBLIC HEALTH INTERVENTION FOR THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC From Virus to Vaccine
by Thijs ten Raa (Utrecht School of Economics, The Netherlands)
edited by David Patrick (The University of British Columbia, Canada & BC Centre for Disease Control, Canada) & Ariana Saatchi (The University of British Columbia, Canada) On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic and life as we knew it paused indefinitely. Confusion, doubts and uncertainty became daily companions as the world watched the pandemic consume country after country. At the University of British Columbia, Canada, a class of aspiring epidemiologists partnered with the professionals working at the frontline of COVID-19 healthcare and research, to examine key questions which would capture a snapshot of the historical pandemic. What caused this outbreak? How does a virus spread? What are the best potential treatments; how did we achieve the development of vaccines, and how do they work? What are the strategies to tackle a two-front war against the virus and the spread of dangerous misinformation and pseudoscience? These questions and more are examined throughout this volume.

In this book the author analyzes measures of consumer wellbeing. The three main, neoclassical measures of well-being are the compensating variation, the equivalent variation, and consumer’s surplus. The question is which of the measures of consumer well-being is the best. This book tackles the question, with a surprising outcome that is contrary to the main opinion in the literature. Prof ten Raa presents a test that measures must pass to track utility. The test will be used to sort measures in the remainder of the book. It will culminate in a variant of consumer’s surplus, which he calls the consumer’s index, and a generalization that applies to nonhomothetic demands. Variants of the consumer’s index are presented, including ones that are applicable to demand functions with income effects, even nonlinear ones. So-called broad measures of consumer well-being, such as the Human Development Index, will be encompassed.

ADVENTURES IN FINANCIAL DATA SCIENCE (2nd Edition)
Decision-Making for the Long Run
The Empirical Properties of Financial and Economic Data
by Haim Levy (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel)
by Graham L Giller (Giller Investments, USA)
A century ago, life expectancy was roughly 40 years, hence saving for retirement was not an important economic issue. Nowadays, life expectancy exceeds 80 years in many countries, and one should expect to live and consume many years after retirement. Thus, optimizing investments and savings for retirement, with a long planned investment horizon, has become an issue of crucial importance.
This book provides insights into the true nature of financial and economic data, and is a practical guide on how to analyze a variety of data sources. The focus of the book is on finance and economics, but it also illustrates the use of quantitative analysis and data science in many different areas. Lastly, the book includes practical information on how to store and process data and provides a framework for data driven reasoning about the world.
How should individuals invest for the long run? Does the optimal asset allocation between risky stocks and relatively safer bonds change with age? Is the idiom “stocks for the long run” backed by scientific evidence? This book provides a comprehensive in-depth review of these issues, bridging theory and practice of investments for various horizons.
The book begins with entertaining tales from Graham Giller’s career in finance, starting with speculating in UK government bonds at the Oxford Post Office, accidentally creating a global instant messaging system that went “viral” before anybody knew what that meant, on being the person who forgot to hit “enter” to run a hundred-million dollar statistical arbitrage system, what he decoded from his brief time spent with Jim Simons, and giving Michael Bloomberg a tutorial on Granger Causality.
Featured Contents: Asset Allocation and the Horizon: The Ongoing Disputes; The Distribution of Returns and the Horizon; Mean-Variance Stochastic Dominance and the Investment Horizon; Performance Indices and the Investment Horizon; Stocks Versus Bonds: Mean-Variance (M-V) and Expected Utility Paradigms; Risk and the Horizon: Annualized Volatility and the Discounting Cash-Flows Approach with Rothschild and Stigliz’s Definition of Risk; Stock Risk: Do Historical Crashes Tell the Whole Story?; Discrete and Continous Returns and the Investment Horizon; and others.
Contents: Preface to the Second Edition; Biography and Beginnings; Financial Data; Economic Data and Other Time-Series Analysis; Politics, Schools, Public Health, and Language; Demographics and Survey Research; Coronavirus; Theory; Epilogue; Appendices: How I Store and Process Data; Some of the Data Sources I’ve Used for this Book. INTERNATIONALISING HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE ASIA PACIFIC
PERFECT IMBALANCE
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS China and Russia
by Una Aleksandra Bēērziņ ņa-Č Čerenkova (Riga Stradins University, Latvia)
Case of Australia, Singapore and Japan
BOOKS
by Teofilo Daquila (National University of Singapore, Singapore)
Perfect Imbalance seeks to answer one of the most important outstanding questions in twenty-first centur y politics: how close are Putin’s Russia and Xi’s China?
With his many years of overseas experiences as an international student, educator and scholar, Teofilo C Daquila has conducted his research on the internationalisation of higher education (IHE), as it has become an important policy issue and research topic for governments and universities around the world. He aims to determine the extent of internationalisation of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region particularly in Australia, Singapore and Japan in terms of its determinants and impacts using a multiand inter-disciplinary framework of analysis, through historical, political, geographical, economic, social, and cultural dimensions.
Written by a scholar fluent in both Chinese and Russian, this book examines the current China – Russia partnership from several perspectives. First, what Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and their respective foreign policy establishments publicly say about the relationship between the countries. Second, how the two establishments frame their tangible cooperation on matters such as security, the Arctic, space, and international relations with other Eurasian countries. Finally, the book examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon Sino – Russian relations. Putin and Xi’s stories, where possible, are cross-checked with what is really happening.

DIALOGUE WITH CHINA
AMERICA’S FUTURE
Opportunities and Risks
Biden and the Progressives
edited by Stephan Rothlin (Rothlin Ltd, Beijing, China & Rothlin Ltd, Hong Kong), Dennis McCann (Rothlin Ltd, Beijing, China & Rothlin Ltd, Hong Kong) & Mike Thompson (University of Victoria, Canada)
by Daniel Quinn Mills (Harvard Business School, USA) & Steven Rosefielde (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA) This book is about a choice President Biden must make that will determine the future of America. His choice is between being a partisan politician or a non-partisan statesman. However, to be a statesman, he must contend with the progressive wing of his party. Today’s progressives have become revolutionaries whose purpose is to remake America by canceling their opponents. Biden has a tiger by the tail. As in all such situations, the problem is how to let go. In this book, we suggest how Biden can free himself from the danger posed by the progressives and simultaneously benefit America dramatically.
This book is the first volume of a projected series of six handbooks on various aspects involved in contemporary encounters with China and her people. The book argues for a handson approach of dialogue with China, which seems to be crucial for business success in China. Bearing in mind the various present clashes with China and an increasing negative image of China internationally, the book is conceived as a handbook reflecting the experiences of observers who provide helpful hints to better understand and appreciate Chinese culture without being blindfolded by multiple traps and pitfalls.
Featured Contents: Biden as President: Joe Biden, the Man and the Politician; The Biden Administration; Bidenomics; Biden and the Post-American World; The Rise of Global Military Insecurity; Biden and China; Biden’s America: The Perils of Democracy; Too Much Partisanship; The Progressives; How Biden Might Save America; and others.
Featured Contents: Comparative Spirituality: The Belt and Road Initiative: Between Pitfalls and Promises a Path Toward a New Humanism (Stephan Rothlin); The Spiritual Principles Indispensable for BRI Construction (Yang Hengda); Moral Leadership: Developing Responsible Leaders in China within a Global Context (Henri de Bettignies); Doing Business with Moral Leadership and Faith (Mike Thompson interviews Johnny Hon; Social Innovation: Angel or Demon? by Bak Lim Kua (Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, Singapore) & How Seng Lim

“To read the memoirs of Daniel Teo is like opening the door onto a huge garden, knowing full well that we will not be able to see all the extraordinary trees and flowers. During his lifetime, Daniel has explored so many fields: architecture, parrots, elderly care, blockchain for real estate, wooden structures for high rise, prefabricated housing for foreign workers, ballet companies and museums to promote the artists of Singapore and Asia, not to mention stamps and music boxes. Thanks to this book, many will discover Daniel, an extraordinary Renaissance Man, who has so much contributed to the Creation of modern-day Singapore.” Elisabeth de Rothschild Member of Singapore Institute of Architects Member of Ordre des Architectes - France “This book follows the inspirational journey of Daniel Teo — FIABCI World President 2002–2003 — who with the traditional Confucian values he inherited shows how a human being can step by step build a success story serving to his Family, Community, Country, while continuing to be strongly engaged in the development of the Art and staying committed to the Real Estate Industry worldwide.” Narek Arakelyan Secretary-General The International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) The book depicts the storied life of Daniel Teo Tong How, a second-generation Singapore real estate developer, by chronicling the major events that took place in his family.
