Championship Men KEN HARRINGTON Welcome to the “Rings” stadium for Game 2 of the 2017 Big V State Championship Men’s Grand Final series. Unless you have been living under a rock, tonight it’s the Hawks against our “old” local rivals, the Waverley Falcons. Last week the Hawks had a huge win in Game One that was played at Waverley last Sunday. The game was classic with the Hawks holding a comfortable lead for most of the game before the Falcons came roaring back in the final few minutes. Matt Snowball (20 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists) continued his great recent form and Mike McCahey (22 points and 7 rebounds) led the way. Jacob Gibson, Nate Truman, Matt Fennell and Shaun Clarke all played very well in the high scoring game. For the Falcons, Desmond Simmons, Chris Arkell and Jason Reardon were their stand outs and all scored in the 20’s. Game one was definitely a showcase of both teams ability to shoot the ball but no doubt both Coaching staffs will have worked during the week on ways to slow the opposition down. Waverley are a team that can score in bunches, as the Hawks were reminded last week, and must be guarded we beyond the three point arc. The Falcons are also hopeful of having Brad Kelleher back this weekend and he adds even more scoring punch. The Hawks focus will be on concentrating for the full 40 minutes. As soon as you relax against Waverley you get punished so this will be a priority. This is two very entertaining teams and a great finish to the Big V season whether it be tonight or for game three tomorrow. Before I sign off for this season, I would just like to personally thank a few people. Firstly to our Sponsors like Brett from Noel Jones and the boys from Ringwood Nissan who have been incredibly supportive. They are great at what they do so if you need some real estate advice or a new car, please go and see them. To Blake and Jen and the VJBL kids who help out at games, we love the support and it’s a big reason why we are in to another Grand Final. To the Committee of Ringwood Hawks Basketball, thanks again for your support and finally I would like to thank the team including Damien, Willie, Beery and Brodie who are the best in the League at what they do. The Players and Coaching staff of the Hawks would like to thank the sponsors and supporters for being on board with the team for 2017. Enjoy the game.

A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE………. It has been a long but another incredible season of Ringwood Hawks Big V Basketball. And this weekend is definitely the last weekend of Basketball for our boys who currently sit one game up in the best of three series over the talented Waverley Falcons. If the Hawks win tonight then they will be crowned Champions for 2017 but if the Falcons hit back then its on again tomorrow here at the Rings at 1pm. One thing is guaranteed, and that’s an incredible game and a massive crowd here to enjoy it. As this is my very last chance, I would like to thank a few people for their support this season. Firstly to Jen Draper, the new lady behind the bar, you have been an incredible help all year and we thank you for all your work. The team managers and the kids of our VJBL teams for doing your court duty each week but also supporting our teams. And thanks to the senior players and Coaches for being so helpful on game nights and I hope to have a beer with you at the Presentation dinner. By Blake Putney (Hawks Game Day Crew)

A TRADITION OF SUCCESS The Hawks won their first State Championship back in 1999. The team was led by the incredible Ryan Miller with his College teammate Mark Rich. Current Hawks Assistant Coach Damien Smith was a star on the rise and Steve Harris the teams defensive wiz. Ben Quick was the teams shooter and Mark and Jason Eversteyn patrolled the paint. The Hawks defeated Blackburn 2-1 to get their first Championship. 13 years later, Sam Belt, Skyler Bowlin and Adrien Sturt joined the Hawks and took the league by storm and the Hawks to another ‘Ship. Matt Snowball, Shaun Clarke, Luke Egan, Willie Weimer were already established as stars in the league and the Hawks beat a very good Eltham, featuring current Hawk Matt Fennell, 2-0 in the Championship series. In 2014, the Hawks were really given no chance to be serious contenders. Imports Bryan Dougher and Marcus Ruh had great seasons but when Trent Zomer joined the team half way through the year things started to happen. In game one of the Grand Final Dougher broke his shoulder and the Hawks needed to win both games at Corio Bay to win. And they did. Snowball, Weimer. Clarke, Zac Haig, Trevor Latham all delivered to beat the Stingrays 2-1. Last year was another memorable season with Nate Champion delivering on his promise to win “one “before he goes home. Logan Lyle provided the shooting power and it was again Clarke, Snowball, Latham and Max Sutton leading the way. The Championship was perfect way to retire Hawks legend Willie Weimer who made a couple of free throws to seal the Championship. The Hawks beat Corio Bay 2-0.
