From 1996 all the way to 2011, Damien Smith controlled the backcourt with his combination of determination, speed and skill. He played 246 games with the Hawks including a memorable Grand Final series performance in 1999 when the Hawks won the State Championship.
Today, Smith starts a new challenge as he will Coach his first NBL1 home game as Hawks Head Coach. Good luck Coach, we look forward to watching this new journey.
Get ready for an exciting matchup as the Ringwood Hawks take on the Hobart Chargers in a highly anticipated game at The Rings. The Hawks return home for our first home game of the season, having dropped our first game of the season on the road to the Waverley Falcons. Despite the loss, some of the shining lights in the Round 1 defeat were Piper Dunlop, who had 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in her debut for the Hawks after being one of our big off-season recruits. Zoe Jenkins did what Zo does and was outstanding off the bench providing 16 points and 4 3PM. Ella Ogier (in her return to the Hawks after her collegiate career) also provided some scoring punch off the bench and had 9 points and 3 steals. Other contributors included Shelby Britten (also on debut for the club) who had 2 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block and Toni Farnworth who had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. On the other hand, the Hobart Chargers also suffered a defeat in Round 1, to instate rival Launceston Tornadoes. However, they have some talented players who can turn the game around, including Kayla Steindl, who had 20 points and 6 rebounds and Greek guard Angeliki Vintsilaiou who had 16 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. This matchup promises to be a highly competitive game, with both teams looking to secure a win. With both teams having already played a game this round - the Hawks at Diamond Valley on Friday and the Chargers at Dandenong last night, both teams will be looking to end Round 2 with a win. *It was an impressive debut for 3 Hawks men in round one with Jonathan Lawton nailing but Simon Grant and Luke Shelley also played well. Luke Shelley is the brother of Jazz Shelley who we all agree would look really nice in green, black and white.
*Yes it’s early but the Mount Gambier Pioneers look strong in both men and women’s conferences. The Club have definitely opened the cheque book and boast plenty of talent. The Hawks have drawn to play them twice this season so we will get a chance to see them at the Rings in June.

*Shout out to long time referee Raoul Kirsten who officiated his 400th SEABL/NBL1 game last week. Highly respected and a great communicator are words often used to describe the former NBL ref and everyone at Ringwood would like to congratulate Raoul for an amazing achievement.

*This year, the NBL1 has introduced a new award. It is the Anzac Day medal and will be handed out across all NBL1 games during Anzac Round. The medal is red and in the shape of a poppy and will be presented to the player who best exhibits the Anzac spirit during the games.

When you talk about working your way up, today Jeremy O’Toole coaches his first home game as Women’s NBL1 head coach. O’Toole started as Russell Lee’s youth league assistant before joining Tim Mottin to be his right hand man. The hard work has paid off. Good luck coach.
NBL1 basketball is back at The Rings for season 2023! After beginning the season with 2 road games, the boys are excited to finally get the chance to play in front of our passionate fans. This afternoon, we welcome the reigning champions, the Hobart Chargers, to the Rings who will be trying to spoil our 2023 home opener. The Chargers are always a super talented team and coach Anthony Stewart knows how to get the best out of his troops. Both teams will be backing up from games in this round, with the Hawks clash at Diamond Valley on Friday whilst the Chargers battled the Dandenong Rangers last night.
The men began the season with an encouraging 10-point victory at Waverley. There were many bright spots for the Hawks, but none shone brighter than US import Jonathan Lawton’s 30-point debut on 55% shooting. He was well supported by our returning US import, Kyle Daggett, who double-doubled with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was a very even performance from the Hawks, with new recruits Simon Grant (6 pts, 8 rebs) and Luke Shelley (7 points) providing a steady hand off the bench and were crucial late for the Hawks. It was great seeing Adrien Sturt (8 pts, 4 rebs) back in action after a season away, and Matt Roberts (7 points) provided his usual energy and spark off the bench. Jack Barry (4 pts, 7 rebs, 2 asts), Shaun Clarke (9 pts, 4 rebs), Matthew Fennell and young point guard Seb Lees, rounded out an excellent team performance from the Hawks.
Hobart have some real fire power and bring back stars from their championship winning team including NBL veteran Sam McDaniel (19 points & 8 rebounds in Round 1) and the anchor in the middle, big man Ole Angerstein (10 pts, 4 rebs). Jacob Richards (10 rebs, 3 asts) and Jordan Hargrave (12 pts, 10 rebs) return and have been a part of coach Stewart’s system for a number of years now. They round out a very talented squad by adding in US import, Devin Watson, who began his NBL1 career with 18 points in a close loss to North West Tasmania in Round 1.
This is the first of 2 matchups with the Chargers this season as the Hawks will be making the trip across Bass Strait in early June. Funnily enough, in the 2 previous matchups since the NBL1 competition was introduced, it’s been the away team who have taken the points. Let’s hope a raucous home crowd can help change that trend and get the Hawks home and continue their positive start to the season!

In 2001, (22 years ago) the Hawks recruited a high scoring guard from Metro State University Denver. His name was Demarcos Anzures.
Anzures had an impressive college career setting many records including the Schools all-time leading scorer and is a hall of fame member.
He just played the one season for the Hawks but he loved his time so much he returned recently and watched his old team beat the Waverley Falcons. Thanks for dropping by Demarcos and we hope to see you again soon.
