Championship Men KEN HARRINGTON Welcome to the “Rings” stadium for Game 2 of the 2017 Big V Championship Men’s SemiFinal series. Tonight it’s the Hawks against the Eltham Wildcats. Last week at Eltham, the Hawks managed to sneak away with an important road win over the Wildcats. In a surprisingly high scoring game, the Hawks managed to hold on thanks to good performances from Mike McCahey, Matt Fennell , Trevor Latham and Stef Osborne. This week the Wildcats will come to Ringwood still looking for a spot in the Grand Final. They will need to win tonight and then again tomorrow. They are a deep and talented roster led by Chris Cameron who was in great form last week leading all scorers with 28 points. There is also plenty of perimeter firepower with Justin Aver, Ben Waldren and Jordan Canavan. Rebounding machine Simon Grant has been fantastic all season and over the last month has taken his game to a new level. Valentine, Bradbury, William, Whelan, Todd, Malvaso and Todd give this team great input off the bench. In Game one, the Hawks got into early foul trouble which meant Osborne and Trevor Latham were called upon a bit quicker than normal. To their credit they were able to step up and play well. Tonight though, the Hawks will need good performances from Jacob Gibson, Shaun Clarke and Matt Snowball. Veteran leadership is invaluable in big finals games and this game will be no different. Both Ringwood and Eltham are very talented offensively and have quality scorers. This game is expected to be hard fought but played at a very high level and very entertaining. The stakes are high as the winner of this series will be headed the Big V Grand Final series against the winner of Waverley V Knox. Waverley currently lead that series 1 to 0. The Players and Coaching staff of the Hawks would like to thank the sponsors and supporters for being on board with the team for 2017. Enjoy the game.

A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE………. It is fantastic to have Big V Finals back at the Rings, and what a series this is between the Hawks and the Wildcats. Game one was a spectacular game and I would expect nothing less tonight. The Hawks played a great game in the noisy surrounds on Eltham High School and hopefully we can pack the Rings tonight and give the Hawks a valuable home court advantage. It will be a big night in Bar tonight but we are stacked and ready if you want a refreshing drink. Herbie will be around handing out the chocolates to all the kids so keep your eyes out. Don’t forget that if there is a game 3, it will be here at the Rings and will tip off at 1pm. Please make plenty of noise and support the boys as they give everything they have to try and make yet another Big V Grand Final series. In 1999, the Ringwood Hawks won their first ever senior State Championship., beating the Blackburn Vikings in a three game series. One of the reasons for the teams success was the recruitment of American star Ryan Miller from South Dakota. Miller averaged a ridiculous 39ppg (48 minute games) and in one game against Craigieburn scored 61 points. He was the MVP of the League and a member of the All-Star five. This week Ryan was back in Melbourne in his role as Assistant Coach of Texas Christian University and took time to visit Hawks Coach Ken Harrington, Damien Smith and a few current Hawks players. Miller bought with him Parents Tom and Sheryl and also his 16 year old daughter Melia. Ryan clearly loved his time at Ringwood which included returning for season 2000. He loved seeing how much the area has changed and how much the Club has grown in his 17 year absence. “It was a life changing experience and I made life long friends here.” Miller said. “It is awesome to see the success the Hawks are having” Miller and his family flew out of Melbourne on Wednesday morning but hope to visit us again soon. For the record, TCU won all there games here in Australia.
