Ringwood & District Historical Society turns 60 in 2018! Making it one of the oldest historical societies in the state. Our major event is an Open Day on Saturday 27th October from 1-5pm at North Ringwood Uniting Church, 14 Dickson Crescent, North Ringwood.
THE STORY OF 1999 It is just two weeks shy of being exactly 19 years since the 1999 Ringwood Hawks went on a historic run and won the Clubs first ever senior State Championship. Lets have a quick journey back in time and remember our Champions from ‘99. 1999 was the era of the Back Street Boys and Britney Spears, it was also Ken Harrington’s first season as Coach of the Hawks after taking over from John Walsh. The team was young with raw talent included Damien Smith, Ben Quick, the Eversteyn brothers and Simon Lilley but had the underrated Steve Harris and veteran Captain Phil Walsh to lead the way. To this core he added 6’3 Ryan Miller, an amazing scoring machine from Northern State University and former NBL player Bruce Blair (Who was injured for much of the year). The Hawks were battling through the opening 6 weeks of the season with 3 wins and 4 losses when an opportunity presented itself. One of Millers College team mates was in Sydney, touring Australia watching his brothers College team Montana State play some exhibition game. A few phone calls later and the Hawks had secured 6’8 Mark Rich and the team suddenly looked very dangerous. If the team were to win a Championship, it was going to be a difficult road. When the play offs started, first up it was a home game against Know which the boys won reasonably comfortably but from there it was road games that they faced. The next game was at Shepparton in front of 1000 people and 6 minutes in to the game the Hawks were in trouble. It was 22 to 2. A half time verbal barrage by Harrington triggered the Hawks who on the back of a Mark Rich shooting clinic came back from the dead and left the Shepparton stadium stunned with an 8 point win. Later that evening the Shepparton Coach was sacked. No time to celebrate though as the next week the Hawks headed to Warrnambool to face Bobby Cunningham and the Championship favourites, the Warrnambool Seahawks. Another capacity crowd of 900 greeted the Hawks who rarely led in this game but with Ryan Miller leading the way the Hawks stayed close enough. Down three with just 3 seconds left, the Hawks defensive wiz Steve Harris, who was scoreless for 47 minutes and 57 seconds of the game (48 minute games in 1999), caught the ball in the corner and nailed a three pointer to send the game in to overtime. The Hawks closed out the win and headed to a best of three series against the Blackburn Vikings. In game one at Blackburn the Hawks went on a rampage, blowing the Vikings off the court to the tune of 39 points. Damien Smith and Miller terrorized the Vikings but a week later things changed dramatically. In game two, Smith was controversially kicked out of the game after retaliating to a push off the ball and the nervous Hawks were quickly realizing that this series was far from over and game three would be required. Game three was a 48 minute battle but the Hawks controlled the game from tip off. Miller and Rich were again spectacular leading the team to a 9 point win and the Championship. There was to be no ejections in the decider as youngsters Smith and Centre Jason Eversteyn both stepped up to be the difference. It was a historic season as this Hawks team had made themselves Championship pioneers. Finals MVP went to Mark Rich and season MVP went to Miller who averaged a remarkable 39 PPG.
Welcome to the 2018 Big V Grand Final series. Tonight it is Game 2 of the best of 3 series and we welcome the Players and supporters from the Eltham Wildcats. Both of these Clubs have had great seasons and finished first and second on the Big ladder. It was probably a fair result that the Hawks faced the Wildcats in the Grand Final. The Hawks won their way in to the GF with a 2 to 0 result over the dangerous McKinnon Cougars whilst the Wildcats survived a 3 game epic contest against the much improved Hawthorn Magic. Last week was game one at Eltham and it was the Hawks who were able to work their way clear in the second half to run away with a 28 point win. There were many great performances on both teams but for the Hawks it was Matt Fennell with 26 points and Jacob Gibson with 25 who led the way while for the Wildcats, Ben Waldren was on fire nailing 29. Special mention must go to Matt Snow who continues to play through injury. The Wildcats are a very deep and talented team. Last week it was Waldren who did the damage but they have plenty of players who can do the same thing. Justin Aver is having another solid season scoring freely while Jordan Canovan continues to shoot it well from deep. Veteran big’s Chris Cameron and Simon Bradbury are both great inside targets and Cameron also has deep deep range. Imports Josh Sykes and Illarion Bonhomme have been great additions and have provided many highlights over the season. Sam Whelan has led this team well and the veteran leadership has come from Mitch Lee and Kristian Williams. For the Hawks, it has been a season of different players stepping up at different times during the year. Stone, Gibson, Fennell, Clarke have all led the team in scoring from time to time but the consistency of Snow, Truman, Osborne and Latham has been important. The Hawks will need to be at their best tonight and every player from 1 to 12 will have an important role. As this is the last weekend of Big V Basketball, the Coaches and Players would like to thank all the Clubs sponsors, Committee and in particular Michelle Jordison and all the VJBL kids for their support on Game days. We will also like the Thank Bryon and Lucinda for their work on the stats and Jim McNally on the microphone. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2019.

I cannot believe that this is the last weekend of Big V basketball for season 2018. Where did that time go?? But it is nice that we are hosting Game 2 and 3 if required at the Rings. Both the Hawks and Wildcats have had amazing seasons and definitely are worthy Grand Finalists. Both teams have superstars in their line up but their strong benches are something they have in common. The benches will be a key in this series I have no doubt. Last week being a sell out at Eltham meant I caught the game on the Live stream and congrats to everyone involved as the coverage was great. It was clearly a great atmosphere and tonight will be no different as these two teams have great local support. Can I also remind you that you can cheer as loud as you can be but swearing and abuse will not be tolerated at the game. Don’t forget that Big V Basketball is a family Sport and we have kids all over the venue that are here to enjoy the game. Finally, Can I thank all the Hawks supporters and volunteers who have made season 2018 a memorable one for our Club. I hope you have enjoyed the season as much as I have and bring on 2019‌..
