O’TOOLE IS ON BOARD It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Jeremy O’Toole in the role of Coaching Co-Ordinator for the Junior Representative Program. Jeremy, having started his involvement with the Hawks in 2015 has coached in our Hawks program at the U/12 and U/14 level as well as assisting Russell Lee with the U/21 Boy’s and Victorian Youth Championship Men’s team. O’Toole has a great understanding of the Club at all levels. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the club’s coaches and players for the 2018/19 VJBL season.” O’Toole said. “It is exciting to be working with Ken and the Committee and get involved in the club’s development on and off the court.” O’Toole will balance his role at the Hawks with a Video/Player Development role he currently has at Melbourne United.

The best time of the year is finally here and what an awesome start to the finals series it has been across the league. Finals is a whole different situation as we all know compared to a normal regular season. One bad game in the finals series may have a big risk getting knocked out and there have been plenty of upsets. The State Champ men’s have had an awesome year and are one step closer to going into another grand final series. After having the week off in week one of the finals series, the boys played against the McKinnon Cougars in game one of the semi-finals last weekend and it was an exciting game to watch even following on the live stats. After trailing at the half time break, the boys came from behind to get the win 100 to 95. It was an awesome team effort especially some amazing individual performances from Matt Fennell (33 points, 12 points, 5 assists), Jacob Gibson (24 points), Shaun Clarke (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Scottie Stone (18 points). This weekend should be an exciting night/weekend and don’t forget that we will be back here on Sunday if the Cougars win tonight. You have got to love finals basketball especially how tight it is

Welcome to the 2018 Big V Semi Final series. Tonight is Game two of the best of three series and we welcome the McKinnon Cougars. The series kicked off last week with game one at McKinnon and it was an absolute nail biting battle. Both teams had control of the game at certain times but it was the Hawks who managed to do just enough to get the win. Matt Fennell was sensational with his 33 point, 12 rebound and 5 assists and he received great support from Jacob Gibson (24 points), Scottie Stone (18 Points) and Shaun Clarke (16 points and 7 rebounds). For the Cougars, it was Sydney Kings NBL Player Deng Deng who led the way with 28 points but Adrian Tomada, Ivan Platenik and veteran Jermaine Maybank both had great games. Both of these teams will have spent the week making some changes for Game two. The Cougars will be super aggressive and may change their defensive focus as they look to send the series in to a game three on Sunday. The Hawks did not play well at time last week but much of that can be attributed to the defence of the athletic Cougars. The key to this game will be the Hawks ability to slow down the Cougars offense which put up 95 points last week. Deng and Tomada had too much space to operate with and they caused the defence a lot of problems. Adjustments must be made in this area. On another note, the Hawks wish to congratulate Cougars veteran Jermaine Maybank on announcing his retirement from playing at the end of this season. Good luck to Jermaine as he takes on a Coaching role in 2019. On behalf on the Players and Coaching staff, we would like to thanks all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters that have again followed the team this season. We hope you enjoy the game.
