After 17 games of State Championship Women’s Basketball, for the Ringwood Hawks it all comes down to this. Tonight we must have a win against the Eltham Wildcats to have any chance of making the Playoffs. The Wildcats have had an inconsistent season but have shown the ability to compete with any team on any given night. They led by one of the most talented players in the league in Alice Kunek. Kunek is averaging an impressive 21ppg and close to 9 rebounds which puts her firmly in League MVP consideration. Supporting Kunek is Samatha Creed and Olivia Bontempelli who both average double figures in scoring and are capable of lighting up the scoreboard. O’Shea and Kitto have also had good seasons and give Coach Ben Cukier plenty to work with. For the Hawks, there can be no excuses tonight. A win will not guarantee us a Finals spot but a loss will ensure we have no chance. We will also be relying on Waverley beating Hume City tomorrow. It is always a difficult situation when you rely on others to win. The girls had a bye last week but it was good to have Cassidy Mihalko back on court the week before against Sunbury. We will need Cass at her best tonight as well as Amanda Meinking, Mel Prior and Yasmin Miller. Kate Spillane has been in great form recently and of course we will need another great all court game from Dezz Ramos. We will need to very focussed on the defensive end of the court against the Wildcats. If Kunek an Co. get too much space at the offensive end they are a very dangerous team. We are clearly a better team with Cassidy back and this game will be a great contest as Eltham will also be trying to finish their season on a winning note.
On behalf of all the Lady Hawks , thanks to everyone who gives the team incredible support in 2018.
A THANK YOU LETTER TO COACHES In our lives, there are many incredible people who inspire and mould our character and future. These mentors and leaders come in all shapes and forms, never failing to provide motivation and advice. For a great number of people, such inspiration comes in the form of a coach or trainer. Coaches are some of the wisest, most incredible people and have an immeasurable impact on the lives of all those they come in contact with. Being a coach, for any sport, at any level, is a daunting challenge and requires absolute commitment and dedication. All those who have been positively affected by a coach can be extremely thankful, here are just a few reasons to thank these incredible human beings… Thank you… For your time, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the sport and more importantly, to player development. You never fail to give your all, even when obligations to family, work, and other commitments remain prevalent. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed, and you serve as an example of selflessness and passion, an example carried on by all those you have taught on an off the field. For your unfaltering commitment, I am thankful. Thank you... For showing me how to be a model citizen, member of the community, and teammate. The values and principles taught day in and day out have shown me how to be an effective and meaningful member of my community and work alongside others in all aspects of lives. The fundamentals you instilled in me have allowed for success and cooperation in all endeavours and for that, I am thankful. Thank you... For showing me the true meaning of leadership. On the field and off the field, you are the pinnacle of leadership and a true model for excellence. You have demonstrated the characteristics a true leader possesses and have shown me how to grow as a person and learn from each and every mistake, no matter how big that mistake might be. The leadership values I have been given have allowed me flourish in unthinkable ways and find success in all opportunities, to which I am so thankful. Thank you... For pushing me to best the best I can be, especially in those time when I was closest to giving up. At every turn, you wanted me to reach my fullest potential and exceed even my own expectations. In the moments I was close to the breaking point, close to quitting, you were there to pick me up, offering wise words and an invaluable lesson I still hold close to my heart today; in those moments and so many more, I was most thankful. Thank you… For making me the person I am today and showing me the true meaning of success. With every word spoken, I was altered and made a better, more successful person. Whether I made a serious mistake or saved the game in the final seconds, you were always there to show me where I could improve and how to achieve the next level of success. Your influence goes far beyond the field, extending into the classroom, relationships, and personal confidence. Without you, I would not be the person I am today and would never have achieved any success. For all this and so much more, I am forever thankful.
A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE with Elly It was a bit of good and bad for the Hawks Big V teams last weekend. Firstly, the good was the Championship Men winning a big game over McKinnon and sealing top spot on the Big V ladder and home court for the Finals series. Well done to Coach Harrington and the Hawks. The not so good was a tough Elimination Final loss for the Youth League Girls who did a great job of finishing on top of their conference for the season. The game was very physical last week and low scoring which was a difficult task for the girls. It’s a bitter pill for the team who did well all year and maybe its time the Big V looked closely at a different Finals system that rewards a team that finishes on top. Tonight is a big game to say the least for our Champ Women. To have any chance of a Finals spot, the girls need to win and win well tonight. They will then rely on Hume City losing to Waverley tomorrow. I am also so happy that tonight we are celebrating the efforts of all the junior Coaches in Basketball. If this is your first time to a Hawks Big V game, then welcome and I am sure you will be entertained. Being a Coach myself, I understand the time and effort you guys put in on a weekly basis and you (we) deserve a gift every now and then. Please keep an eye on Hawks social media pages next week to see what is happening for the upcoming Finals. Fingers crossed we will have both the men and Women in action over the next few weeks. Go Hawks!!!!!

Welcome to the Rings Stadium for round 18 of Championship Men’s Basketball .This week is also the last weekend of the regular season, where did that time go. Tonight the Hawks face the very talented Eltham Wildcats. It has been another great season for the Wildcats who with a win tonight will still have a chance of snaring second place and a bye in the first round of the Finals. There is plenty of talent in this Wildcats team led by Ben Waldren, who is the teams leading scorer. The secret of the wildcats success though is the depth they have and then scoring options Coach Trevor Lee can go to. Chris Cameron, Jordan Canovan, Justin Aver, Simon Bradbury and Mitch Lee to name a few. The two talented imports that have joined the Wildcats this year have been fantastic additions. Both Ilarion Bonhomme and Joshua Sykes have been great to watch and Sykes in particular has provided the League with many highlights thanks to his amazing jumping ability. Rarely has he not played a game this year and left the crowd shaking their heads in amazement. For the Hawks, the win against McKinnon last week was enough to seal the top finish and home court advantage throughout the upcoming Finals. Whilst tonight’s game will not have any effect on the Hawks finishing position, the guys need to keep playing hard and get ready for what will be one of the closest Finals series in recent history. With that in mind this game will be great to watch. As tonight is Junior Coaches Night, a big thank you to all the Junior Coaches who are attending tonight, thanks for all you do to help kids achieve greatness on and off the Basketball court. The Players and Coaches of the Hawks would like to thanks all the Sponsors, Committee and junior teams that are assisting in tonight’s game.
