ITS JUST PURE DETERMINATION HAWKS SNOWY SET FOR 400th GAME Ringwood Hawks Coach Ken Harrington has coached Matt Snowball for 13 of his 18 seasons and he sat down and gave us an insight on what makes the Hawks Legend special. It was early 2000, and we (Ringwood Hawk’s players and Coaches) still had the smell of cigars and champagne on us after we had won the Clubs first ever State Championship the previous year. The sport was really starting to grow in Maroondah and we were aware of a young kid in our junior program that was doing some pretty special things at the Under 16 Australian Championships. His name was Matt Snowball. This chunky, cheeky and cocky kid was 15 years of age but we wanted to get him in to the senior side because he was clearly the best junior we had seen in a while and it would fast track his development. He was, after all, the most dominant under 16 player in the Country and he looked like he belonged in senior Basketball from day one. In his first few seasons, Snowy was playing behind some Hawks Legends like Damien Smith or talented American imports. He clearly hated playing limited minutes and when he did get into the game showed his potential, it was there for all to see. His break out season was 2006 when he became the unquestioned court leader. He averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds and nearly 5 assists per game but the Hawks as a team struggled and missed the play-offs. At times during this period, his frustration boiled over and he would tear his jersey apart or smash a water bottle. Many people looked at him and decided he was uncoachable, undisciplined and selfish. I never saw it that way. I knew I had a guy who had a burning desire to compete, and that is something I knew could make him special. I describe Snowy as fire. When used the right way, it will heat your house and cook your food but when it’s out of control, it will burn your house down. By 2009, Snowy was heating the Rings weekly and led the Hawks to the first of their many Grand Final appearances. His statistical numbers had grown to nearly 14 points per game to go along with 6 assists and 7 rebounds. He was now the best pure point guard in the Big V. Understanding what we now had leading our team on court, we starting recruiting American players who were notable perimeter shooters. The theory being that Snowy will find a way to get them good open shooting opportunities, and from that point on, the Hawks went to a new level. Sam Belt, Skyler Bowlin, Kevin Ratzsch, Bryan Dougher, Marcus Ruh, Nate Champion, Logan Lyle, Mike McCahey and currently Jacob Gibson and Scottie Stone are all American shooters that owe Snowy a drink or two for helping them achieve great things whilst in Australia playing for the Hawks. What is it that makes his special? I was asked this a few weeks ago. Apart from his unselfishness and desire, it would be his court vision and ability to pass the ball. If there is such a thing as ESP (extrasensory perception) on the basketball court then he has it. Snowy is a play ahead of everyone else, he has eyes in the back of his head and his teammates learn quickly they need to have their hands ready. There has been many occasions when a new player in christened in to the team with a pass that hits them in the chest or the face, how did he do that was the look on their face that said it all. Jacob Gibson, who is one of the Hawks current imports said that Snowy is the best point guard he has ever played with. Gibson has played with some great talent around the world but said it was Snowys ability to deliver a pass to a teammate in exactly the right spot at exactly the right time. It is kinda unbelievable he said. Current Hawks Centre Shaun Clarke would be the first to agree as he seems to be a favourite target who would happily agree that he gets 6 to 8 points every game on the back of brilliant Snowy assists. There have been constant injury issues that have hampered Snowy but come game day he will always find a way to fight through and give the team whatever they need. Now in his mid 30s, injuries are a constant but competitiveness and his team first nature still own his mind and when the ball tips off each week he is ready to go and do his thing. And make no mistake, we are just as reliant on him now as we were 10 years ago. There has been all-star appearances, MVPs, golden hands and assist awards but he never seemed that interested in them. He is about team success and he has had plenty. One junior State Championship, one Youth League State Championship and 4 senior State Championship is the current total and counting but the most incredible stat is this. Over the last 250 games that Snowy has played in, his team has won a staggering 78% of them. The team has not lost much and that’s a good thing as he hates losing, actually he hates losing way more than he likes winning. He is simply a freak, there will never be another like him. He is an artist on the Basketball court. He is the engine that has driven the most successful team in the history of the Big V. Stay healthy please mate, we need the fire to warm and cook for at least another 100 or so.
Welcome back to The Rings for Round 6 of the 2018 Victorian Youth Championship Men season. Your Hawks (4-4) split a rough double-header last weekend. On Saturday, we were stunned by Knox at the State Centre. The Raiders simply played harder than us for four quarters. Their defence was relentless, and we coughed the ball up 29 times. The final margin blew out to 32 points (61-93). The lone star was Tom Lock (11pts, 3rebs). The young gun was composed in the heat of battle and earned a career highs points and minutes. Debutant Blake Ward was solid off the pine (9pts, 2rebs, 2asts, 2stls), showcasing how can contribute at both ends of the floor as the season rolls on. Fortunately, Sunday was a different story as we hosted the Sandringham Sabres. Though we started horrifically, down 16 at quarter time, the boys went on a 61-37 run to finish the game and get the W (70-62). Co-Captain Ryan Miller (7pts, 8rebs, 5asts, 6stls, 3blks) filled the stat sheet in 27 minutes. Matthew Roberts scored an efficient 18 points at 70% from the field in just 20 minutes. Sebastien Lees (12pts, 5rebs, 4asts) and Kaide Fittolani (6pts, 5rebs, 2asts, 3stls) also came to play. Matthew Hickey (11pts) continues to impress at both ends of the floor, holding a Sabre star to below expected numbers, and scoring in the key, mid-range and from deep. Tonight, we welcome the Altona Gators (2-5) to the Hawk’s nest. Last weekend the Gators hosted 2017 Champions, the Kilsyth Cobras. In a game where scoring efficiency took a back seat, Altona battled hard but could not overcome the Cobra stars, losing by 18 (60-78). Shining lights for the Gators were Nicholas Formosa (13pts, 7rebs, 5asts) and Dogukan Elyazar (12pts, 7rebs). The Hawks and Gators don’t know each other all that well. This will be second time they have faced off since Altona joined the VYCM competition last year. Coaches will have watched plenty of tape and analysed stats this week. Still plenty of uncertainty in this one. It will no doubt be an exciting game. Good luck to both teams. The VYCM would like to thank the referees, score bench officials, committee, and supporters for their contributions.
A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE………. We had another awesome weekend of Big V action and some massive wins across the league. Last Saturday night, the State Champ men’s team had a massive win against the Knox Raiders 91 to 76 and a fantastic team effort all round and everyone getting on the court especially five players getting into double digits. The boys will be looking to continue the winning streak against Casey tonight and the Blackburn Vikings the next day before the bye next week. Massive congratulations to Matthew Snow who is an absolute legend playing his 400 th game tonight! In the VYCW grand final replay from last year last Sunday, the youth girls got a massive win over the Sandringham Sabres and got the win 69 to 51 with everyone getting on court especially a great game by Annabel Deerbon with 15 points, Danielle Calvisi with 12 points and Rachael Watson with 10 points, 2 steals and 1 block. The girls come up against the Kilsyth Cobras in a top of the table clash in the Watson conference and what should be a great game to watch. Always tough to place to play at Kilsyth but I’m sure the girls will give everything they’ve got on the court. The youth boys had a tough game last Saturday night against the Knox Raiders going down 93 to 61. They did bounce back the next day on Sunday against the Sandringham Sabres 70 to 62. Tonight, the boys come up against Altona who’ve been competitive this year and looking to bounce back after a tough game last weekend against the Kilsyth Cobras. The State Champ women’s girls had a tough game against the Knox Raiders going down 73 to 61. Dezzi Ramos had a great game with 21 points and Cassidy Mihalko with 16 points and 2 steals. The girls will be looking to get the win against the Eltham Wildcats on Sunday with many great matchups to keep an eye on and great game to watch.

Welcome to the “Rings” stadium for Round 6 Big V action. Tonight we welcome the talented Casey Cavaliers and also celebrate 400 Games for one of the Greatest Players the Big V has seen. Last week the Hawks travelled to the State Basketball Centre and had a very good win over a tough and physical Knox Raiders. The guys started slowly but worked their way back in to the game thanks to Scottie Stone and Jacob Gibson. Matt Fennell and Trevor Latham also had great games as did Snowy who continues to be amazing. Last week the Cavaliers enjoyed a bye but will be ready to go tonight. They are a deep and talented team led by veteran leaders like Mitch Chapman, Brandon Polk. Brent Hobba and Ben Louis. Import Raheem Lemons has been in great form as has Matt Donlan who has recently finished his successful College career at Youngstown State University. So far this year the Cavs have won three of their five games with wins over Knox, Keilor and Werribee but fell short against Blackburn and McKinnon. They are certainly considered by many to be serious Championship threats. For many years Snowy and now Assistant Coach Willie Weimer have been the faces of the Ringwood Hawks. Since Willie’s retirement as a player, Snowy has continued to be the guy who is Ringwood through and through and plays hard game after game. Tonight he does that for the 400th time. As a Coach all you can really ask for is unrelenting effort from your players, Snowy has given that to me, his teammates and the supporters of the Hawks for the past 18 years. Simply amazing!!! Tonight we honour Snowy, well done mate and stay focussed because we could use your genius for a while yet. The Players and Coaching staff of the Hawks would like to thank the sponsors and supporters for being on board with the team for 2018. Enjoy the game.

Welcome to The Rings for the First game of a Youth League Championship double header, the first game is your lady Hawks playing the Ballarat Rush. Your Hawks are coming off a successful weekend defeating Sandringham by 18 A very important and tough win to get and protect our home floor. The game V Sandringham was a tight tough contest with Sandringham playing some very good basketball, after a tight first qtr, the girls locked down at the defensive end of the court only giving up 8 points in the second qtr, which lead to a more efficient second qtr at the offensive end. The third qtr was a tight affair and Sandringham hit some telling baskets from deep to stay within reach going into the last qtr. The last quarter was a defensive affair and we held Sandringham to 6 points to come away 18 points. Leading performers from last week were Annabel Deerbon with 15 points 8 rebounds, Dani Calvisi with 12 points 6 Rebounds and Rachael Watson with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. This afternoons game is going to be a tough contest, Ballarat are a well respected program that always come out and play hard and make you accountable at both ends. We will need to hold Ballarat’s leading players Claire Blower 12.6 ppg and 10 rpg, Tori Chandler 10.83 ppg and 4.83 rpg and Laura Taylor 9.33 ppg and 8.83 rpg. We will need to be very focused at the defensive end of the court to limit Ballarat’s scoring options and maintain pressure on the ball to slow their offensive movement. We hope you enjoy the game! Be loud and get behind your Youth Champ Women! The Ringwood Hawks Coaches and Players wish to thank their sponsors, volunteers and supporters.
