A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE………. We had some interesting results last weekend as we reach the half way point of the season and things are looking tight ass the race to the finals heats up. The State Champ men’s had a tough game against a tough Eltham Wildcats team going down 98 to 89 in a high scoring game. Four players got into double figures with Jacob Gibson 25 points, 3 steals, 1 block, Scottie Stone with 20 points, 1 steal, Shaun Clarke with 15 points, 3 assists and Stefan Osborne with 10 points. The boys come against a competitive Hume City team this weekend and should be a good game to watch. The youth boys had the double header last weekend against Nunawading last Saturday night in a tough game going down by 5 points 78 to 73. Multiple players stepped up including Ryan Miller (Who today plays his 100th) with 16 points, Matthew Hickey with 13 points and Matthew Roberts with 12 points, 2 assists. The boys backed it up on Sunday against a tough Eltham Wildcats team going down by 12 points 72 to 52. They come up against the Melbourne Tigers this weekend in what should be an interesting contest. The State Champ women’s team had another awesome win against Southern Pen in an awesome team effort. Cassidy Mihalko had a wonderful game with 25 points, 1 steal, Amanda Meinking with 12 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 1 steal in double figures. The girls come up against the Hume City Broncos and always a great rivalry to watch with some interesting matchups to keep an eye on especially Lisa Murphy and Amanda Meinking. The youth girls got the win last weekend against Waverley 71 to 58 with an awesome team performance all round. Neeharara Ravikumar had a great game with 18 points, 7 assists, 3 steals, Bec Noller with 12 points, 2 steals, 2 assists and Annabel Deerbon with 13 points, 3 assists. They come up against the Melbourne Tigers in what should a blockbuster game to watch.
Welcome to the Rings of Round 9 action of Big V action. Tonight we have a rare Double Header with the Champ Men against a team we know very well, the Hume Hume City Broncos. Last week, the Lady Hawks (7-2) travelled to Hillview Stadium in Rosebud and got the win against a tough Southern Peninsula Sharks team. It was even throughout the first and second half but managed to hold on and get the win in an awesome team effort all round especially Cassidy Mihalko (25 points, 1 steal), Amanda Meinking (12 points, 3 steals, 1 block) and Dezz Ramos (6 points, 4 assists). Last night the girls had an exhibition game against USA College team the Wittenburg Tigers and as long as we incurred no injuries, should be at full strength tonight. The Hume City Broncos (4-3) will be hungry and ready to go tonight after going down against the inform Waverley Falcons. The Broncos are always a tough opposition led by Nicole Zammit, Vivien Saad and imports Lisa Murphy and Kelly Hardeman who have been great inclusions. We’ll have to play well defensively limiting their points and offensively sharing the ball around. Tonight will no doubt be another exciting game to watch and another rivalry chapter to be written between the Hawks and Broncos. You can expect a physical encounter when these teams battle but it will be played at a high standard. Many will remember the great Grand Final battles between our two Clubs and both teams are striving for another chance at a Championship. There is plenty of work to do before either team can be serious Grand Final contenders but a win tonight would have either team on the right track. Welcome to the “Rings” stadium for some Round 9 Big V action. Tonight we host the Hume City Broncos. Last week was a pretty disappointing performance by the Hawks who got a timely wakeup call at Eltham. The Team was flat from tip off and against teams like Eltham and Hume City, they will always be ready to take advantage. Jacob Gibson was probably the Hawks best on the night but hopefully the loss was a reminder to the guys that you must be ready to go week in and week out. Hume City has had an inconsistent season thus far but have a roster that can beat any team on any night. They will be ready to play tonight though after a disappointing loss on their own last week at home against Werribee. They again have some serious talent led by Mike Rose (18ppg) who has been lighting up the league for many years now. Lee Jeka is still as explosive as anyone with his limitless range from the perimeter and Import Tre’Von Clayton is finally healthy and giving the Broncos another consistent scorer. Veteran Shaun Prendergast continues to provide great service to the Broncos and Jah Soloai has been a great addition this season. Of Couse, it still great to see Hawks 2 time Championship winner Luke Egan back for another season and playing some great Basketball. Eg’s was one of our most popular players and it’s great to see him still causing defences huge headaches. For the Hawks, Shaun Clarke is having a fantastic season and we hope he continues his fine form. A few players have been battling some injury issues but hopefully most of the Hawks players are nearing full fitness and will be in uniform tonight. Let’s hope the guys have learnt their lesson from last week and are ready to put their best foot forward tonight. Welcome to The Rings for the First game of a Youth League Championship double header, the first game is your lady Hawks playing the Melbourne Tigers The Lady Hawks are coming off a successful weekend defeating Waverley by 13 points in a very tough contest particularly for the first half with Waverley holding the lead for the majority of it. The start the third quarter we came out with greater intensity at both ends of the floor to open up a 12 point lead going into the last quarter. Once again during the game we were able to use our depth and get many contributions from the bench. This area has been be far the biggest difference between 2017 &2018. It’s very pleasing to be able to turn to the bench and know that player will step up when called upon. Top contributors were Neehara Ravikumar 18 point, 7 assists Rachael Watson 8 points 14 rebounds , Annabel Deerbon 13 points 5 rebounds and 3 assists, Rebecca Noller 12 points and 6 rebounds. Today’s opponents Melbourne Tigers are coming off a tough weekend. Losing both games against Hawthorn and Kilsyth who are both in finals contention this year. They will be looking to a tone for last weekends losses and get back onto the winners list coming hear today. We will be very wary of the wounded Tigers who beat us earlier this Year with a half court shot in the dying seconds of the game. We are going to need to be much more focused than our last meeting and be disciplined from the opening tip off to come away with a much needed win to get the head to head result as we turn to the second half of the season. For the Tigers their key players are Heaven-Lee Valenti who was dominate in our first meeting, rising star Nikki Metcalfe who is averaging 12 PPG & 8 RPG and Emily Monaghan 9 PPG & 5 RPG, not to mention Zoe Cransberg who wasn’t available last weekend who can dominate at game averaging 12 ppg, 10 rpg and 5 steals per contest! It’s going to take a Team first defensive approach to keep the Melbourne team in check, to limit their scoring options and maintain pressure on the ball to slow their offensive movement. Welcome back to The Rings for Round 9 of the 2018 Victorian Youth Championship Men season. Tonight, we honour Ryan Miller and 100 games played in the Big V. Ryan has been a long serving member of both the junior and senior ranks of the Ringwood Hawks. He has played at a collegiate level, securing a position at Black Hills State, and was a member of the 2016 VYCM Grand Final roster. He a multiple-time team MVP and has led the team in many statistical categories over the years. In season 2018, Ryan is Co-Captain of the young roster, leading and mentoring the stars of the future. The entire Hawks community congratulates Ryan on this achievement and thanks him for his service to the club. Your Hawks (6-7) battled through a tough double-header last weekend. Saturday night saw the boys enter the ‘Graveyard’ to take on the Nunawading Spectres. The lead alternated for most of the game, with the Spectres edging away in the final period with some big makes from deep. Despite the loss of 5-points (78-73), it was one of the best performances from the young Hawks this year. Yuot Gai (14pts, 12rebs) was sensational posting a solid double-double, as was Matt Roberts (12pts, 4rebs, 4asts). Veterans Ryan Miller (16pts), Matt Hickey (13pts, 5rebs) and Matt Allwood (8pts, 4asts) also made a significant impact. The Eltham Wildcats visited the Rings on Sunday. The start was a horror for the boys, amassing only 20 points in the first half. Goals were set to win the second half and regain some dignity. This was achieved, but the early damage was too great to overcome as we succumbed to a 14-point deficit at the final siren (58-72). Yuot Gai (11pts, 8rebs) led the way, with young gun Ben Linkin (6pts, 5rebs, 2asts) and debutant Zac Dawson providing a spark off the bench. Today we welcome the Melbourne Tigers (5-7) for our second clash of the season. Last weekend the Tigers also went down to the Wildcats but got much closer than we did, losing by only 5-points (67-72). Archi Manton (12pts, 4rebs), Mason Gaze (14pts, 5rebs, 3asts) and Daniel Kinkela (15pts, 12rebs) were all in fine form. The last time we met, the Tigers took a victory in overtime, after the Hawks boys blew a double-digit lead. Retribution is on the minds of the team in this one.
