HISTORICAL LOGOS OF THE RINGWOOD HAWKS

Celebrating the Clubs 40th year of Basketball

WE’RE BACK! After what seems like an eternity NBL1 basketball is returning to The Rings for what is sure to be an epic season. Both teams are already a game into their campaigns, with the women going down to Eltham after an Anneli Maley masterclass, and the men taking home a victory thanks to strong performances from Adrien Sturt (25pts) and CJ Asuncion-Byrd (19pts) This weekend the Geelong Supercats make the trip to Ringwood and they are sure to test both Hawks teams. The Geelong women went down to Knox in their season opener, however, boast a very strong team with the likes of Steph Blicavs and Aimie Clydesdale leading the charge. Both the Supercats teams will be eager to make a statement early as they try to avoid falling to 0-2. Geelong’s men had more success in the opening round, defeating the Raiders by 10 points. It was a low-scoring affair but Wang Nyieth (22pts) and Isaac Turner (17pts) both impressed. We’ve waited long enough so let’s get stuck in to what should be a great night of NBL1 basketball!

Welcome back to NBL1 Basketball and boy haven’t we missed it. Tonight we welcome the Geelong Supercats to the Rings for Round 2 action and our first home game of the 2021 season. The Hawks had a disappointing game last week against Eltham and are looking to bounce back and get their first win of the season. There was not too many positives out of the game last week but Hope Terdich and Demi Skinner both worked hard at both ends. Continuing her good early season play was Funda Nakkasoglu who had 13 points last week and veteran Kate Spillane was solidin her 17 mins on court. The Geelong Supercats are coming off a tough loss against the Knox raiders and are also looking to get their first win of the season tonight. Sarah Elsworthy is coming off an efficient 16 point game and Aimie Clydesdale also had 15 points, both players are hardworking and showed no signs of slowing down despite playing big minutes. If the Hawks want to get a win they are going to have to play better on the defensive end of the floor. Eltham’s offense was in full gear and scored 81 points and Geelong are a good rebounding team especially on the offensive end. Ringwood will need to put a focus on boxing out. The Ringwood girls will also need to have a better shooting night and after a good week of training and being back on the home court, this should hopefully happen. A big thanks to all our Club Sponsors and to the volunteers who support us and make sure the girls are stepping on to the court in 2021.

If it feels like a long time since we were here, it should, it has been 21 months since the Hawks hosted an NBL1 game at the Rings but we are back. And what better way to return than with a game against the team that has chins wagging this year, the Geelong Supercats. Before we look at tonight’s game, the season did kick off last week with the Hawks travelling to Eltham to face an old foe in the Eltham Wildcats. It was a tough test for the Hawks who were missing some key personnel but they managed to hang tough and grind out an important 5 point win. Adrien Sturt was terrific bagging 25 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists as was CJ Asuncion-Byrd who nailed 19 points on debut. Jack Barry, Trevor Latham and Matt Snow all played well and insured the boys got the start to the season that they wanted. The Supercats travelled to the State Basketball Centre and despite also missing some of their NBL players, managed to do the job defensively again the Knox Raiders and won by 10 points. Isaac Turner (formerly Kilsyth) had an instant impact on his new team as did Gabe Hadley who has just returned from a successful College career in the USA. A big key for the Supercats was the performance of Wang Nyieth who came off the bench and nailed 22 points in just 20 minutes. The Supercats have had a busy offseason with new Coach Justin Schueller coming across from Kilsyth and bringing plenty of NBL players with him. Shea Ili and Jo Lual-Acuil from Melbourne United will be joining this team as will Cairns Taipan George Blagojevic. Import Isaac Turner and Owen Odigie have followed Schueller from Kilsyth while a man you know very well, Maalo Hicks will be back to anchor the post. The signings continue on for the Supercats who also signed some talented Aussies returning from College in Gabe Hadley and Jack McDonald. The veteran Leader in Liam McInerney is also back for another season. We are unsure who will be available for the Supercats tonight but they clearly will be a team to reckon with towards the end of the season. There is no doubt that the Hawks will be “better for the run” last week and returning home will be nice. There was certainly areas that need to be cleaned up that the Coaches noticed against Eltham and Geelong will be ready to try and capitalize. Despite the Supercats expected to be missing key players, they showed last week they are more than capable to winning games on the road. We would like to thanks our major sponsors Noel Jones Ringwood and The Sebel Ringwood for your outstanding support of our Club. We hope you enjoy NBL1 Basketball back at Ringwood.

Did you know that since we last played an NBL1 home game, Shaun Clarke and Matthew Snow have become Dad’s. Congrats to Shauny and Carly for the arrival of Hudson and Snowy and Liv on the arrival of Orlando. Keep an eye out for the future Hawks starting point guard and starting Centre in their Hawks jerseys tonight.

In 2017, Tori Jarosz owned the glass for the Hawks in the Big V. This week Jarosz has signed for the Dallas Wings and will head to training camp in the hope of landing a spot on their WNBA roster for 2021. Jarosz averaged 18 points and nearly 14 rebounds per game for the Hawks.
