HISTORICAL LOGOS OF THE RINGWOOD HAWKS

Celebrating the Clubs 40th year of Basketball

After two home games at the beautiful Norwood Stadium, tonight we are back at the Rings and welcome an old foe in the Eltham Wildcats. There is such great history between these two Clubs that go way back to the 1990’s and continues today. Who can forget the Big V battles with the men’s teams battling out Grand Finals in 2012 and in 2018 whilst the Women’s teams have also had some tense battles over the years. Both Women’s teams this season are right amongst the Finals action so tonight’s game will be a classic. There’s plenty of WNBL talent on both teams including the rebound machine Anneli Maley who grabbed a lazy 30 boards last week. Anneli is the daughter of former NBL star import Paul Maley wo played for the Saints, Giants and 36ers during his career. The Men’s game is also expected to be a hard, tough contest but is incredibly important for the Hawks who still have a top 8 finish in their sights but have plenty of challengers ahead. The Wildcats are a streaky team and are capable of beating any team in NBL1.

Welcome everyone, tonight we face the Eltham Wildcats in a massive women’s NBL1 contest. Last week the Hawks had a heartbreaking loss to the Kilsyth Cobras losing by one point and are looking for a bounce-back game this upcoming weekend. Leading the way for the Hawks last week was Funda Nakkasoglu who had 19 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists on 6 for 12 shooting. Another strong performer last game was Marena Whittle who had 12 points and 13 rebounds on 4 for 13 shooting. The Eltham Wildcats are performing well and will be a tough matchup for the Hawks this weekend. The Wildcats had a great team win last week beating Dandenong by 2 points in a back-and-forth game. Lily Scanion had 20 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist on 7 for 19 shooting, while Anneli Maley had 14 points, 30 rebounds and 6 assists on 7 for 16 shooting (Yes 30 rebounds). Key players to watch out for on the Eltham wildcats are Anneli Maley, Lily Scanion and Rebecca Pizzey. Anneli Maley on the season is averaging 17 points per game and 24 rebounds per game on 38% shooting from the field. Lily Scanion on the season is averaging 15 points per game on 42% shooting from the field. Rebecca Pizzey on the season is averaging 13 points per game on 50% shooting from the field. Key players for the Hawks to keep an eye on tonight are Funda Nakkasoglu, Marena Whittle and Demi Skinner who are all having good seasons as is Hope Terdich and veteran Toni Farnworth. Funda Nakkasoglu on the season is averaging 18 points per game on 43% shooting from the field. Marena Whittle on the season is averaging 16 points per game and 12 rebounds per game on 39% shooting from the field. Welcome to NBL1 Basketball, tonight we welcome the Eltham Wildcats to the Rings for another chapter in a great rivalry those goes back close to 30 years. It has been a rough season so far for the Wildcats who have won just 2 of their 12 games so far and sit in 16th spot on the ladder. Despite the results, the Wildcats have been in most games and have shown the ability to beat any team in the League. Former NBL player Adam Doyle has again been a key cog for the Wildcats with his ability to run the team and score but he has had plenty of assistance from Justin Aver, Simon Bradbury, Ben Waldren and shooter Sam Whelan. Last week the Wildcats played well for 3 quarters but just fell short against the Dandenong Rangers by 11 points at home. For the Hawks, it was another disappointing outcome falling 12 points short at Kilsyth. The effort was definitely there but the boys missed too many opportunities and the Cobras were good enough to take advantage. CJ Asuncion-Byrd (26 points) was is great form despite early foul issues but he did not have enough support on the night. The loss was the Hawks 3rd in a row and if they hope to remain in Finals contention, then tonight’s game is simply a must win. Adrien Sturt, Matt Fennell, Jack Barry and Matty Snow have all had reasonably solid seasons but the Hawks will need a little more from them on the run home. The Hawks big man department including Ricardo Martin, Shaun Clarke and Trevor Latham are all capable of taking over a game and their impact will certainly have a big say in where the Hawks season goes from here. After the Covid break, the NBL1 schedule looks a little different which means tomorrow the Hawks will head up to Bendigo and face the Braves. It’s a busy schedule over the next two weeks with a trip to Tasmania next weekend., which has proven to be a tough test against for all visitors against two top teams. If you can’t get to the games remember to watch the live streams and be a part of our journey as we ride the bumps and highs and lows. The players and staff would like to thank our incredible sponsors including Noel Jones Ringwood, Fodmapped for you and The Sebel Ringwood .

NBL1 MEN-Kilsyth Cobras 88 def Ringwood Hawks 76 The Ringwood Hawks battled the Kilsyth Cobras all night at Kilsyth Stadium but just could not overcome the determined Cobras in the last quarter. The Hawks threw everything at the Cobras but their newest signing Deng Deng (Illawarra Hawks) stepped up each time the Hawks looked like challenging. Adrian Tomada was also a handful for the Hawks who were too reliant on CJ Asuncion-Byrd who finished with 26 points. The loss is the 3rd in a row for Ringwood who must now get back on track against Eltham next Saturday night. For the Cobras, the win has them placed nicely in the top 4 with some tough challenges ahead.

NBL1 WOMEN-Kilsyth Cobras 66 def Ringwood Hawks 65 A late-game surge has secured Kilsyth an impressive home win over a Ringwood Hawks side that came in looking to extend its three-game winning streak. It was a game of runs, with Ringwood landing the first blow, pulling ahead 12 -4 to start the game, before the Cobras responded, scoring 14 unanswered points across the end of the first term and start of the second quarter. Kilsyth held off the Hawks for the remainder of the first half, however, after many attempts, Ringwood pushed past the hosts to close the third quarter thanks to a 12-2 run. Funda Nakkasoglu (19 points) played her usual attacking brand of basketball for the visitors as the Hawks held its lead until the final second of the contest. Down by a single point with eight seconds left, everyone assumed the Cobras would get the ball to Lauren Scherf (25 points, 16 rebounds), however, it would be Brihana Whatman, who to that point of the game had only one made basket to her name, that stepped up in the biggest moment. Whatman drove down the right side of the lane before scooping up a layup attempt that cooly rolled in to give Kilsyth what would ultimately be a gamewinning lead. With one final attempt to win the game, Nakkasoglu faltered, failing to get a shot up in time as Kilsyth celebrated in front of its home fans.

Welcome to The Rings for this round 17 match up between our YVCW Hawks vs the Ballarat Rush. This is our second game for the weekend playing away to rivals Kilsyth last night. Our matchups last weekend came against the Dandenong Rangers on the road and the Hume City Broncos at home. Saturday's match up with the Rangers saw a tightly contested battle with our Hawks coming away 6 point winners in a fierce last quarter. Some improved free throw shooting and large contributions from Katrina Warton (22pts on 612 shooting, 6reb 2ast) and Zoe Servinis (21pts on 7-11 shooting, 7reb, 4stl, 4blk) led to a tough victory away from home. Sunday we came up against the top of the table Broncos, who proved this running away 58-79 winners after outscoring our girls 9-25 in the second. Our girls had no answer for Hume’s strong shooting from the 3 point line, at 52%. Annabel Deerbon (15pts, 8reb, 2ast, 3stl) was a shining light in a rough game. With a strong week at training, we hope to bounce back this weekend and keep our finals hopes alive.
