HISTORICAL LOGOS OF THE RINGWOOD HAWKS

Celebrating the Clubs 40th year of Basketball

With Matt Hickey still on the sidelines, we again have “Scotty G” Scott Grimster anchoring the live stream commentary team. If you didn’t catch the coverage last week, Scotty and “Coach K” Kevin Nolan did a great job stepping in and covering an incredible night of Basketball at the Rings. And guess what…..they are back again!! This week we expect another two great games with the Albury Wodonga Bandits visiting the Rings. Let’s her what Scotty thinks about it. “The Bandits have had a successful history with great past players like Allen McCowan, Momo Ntumba and Jazzmar Ferguson and also a National Championship banner hanging on their wall. Ferguson , by the way, has enjoyed a great career in Italy since his days in Albury finished. This years Bandits team is fairly new and improving each week but as per their history they will be athletic and high scoring. Can’t wait to get both games underway.”

Welcome to The Rings for round 6 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Albury-Wodonga Bandits. It is has been a difficult start to the season for The Bandits who are yet to win a game from six attempts, however they have been improving week each week and will be aiming to get their first win tonight against the Hawks. The Bandits are led by star guards Emma Mahady who is currently second in the league in scoring averaging 24.67 ppg, 8.33 rpg, 1.50 apg and 1.67 spg and Brodie-Paige Theodore who is averaging 16.2 ppg. Last week, the Hawks bounced back and were able to win at home against the Ballarat Rush. A strong first quarter from the ladies allowed the Hawks to establish an early double-digit lead which remained steady at the halftime interval. Another push in the third quarter pushed the margin out to 17 points by three-quarter time which remained unchanged by the time the final buzzer sounded. Although it was a tough shooting night for the ladies overall, the Hawks found some consistency from behind the arc led by the returns of Funda Nakkasoglu (20 points and 4 3pm) and Demi Skinner (2 3pm). Another feature of the Hawks offence was the playmaking of Toni Farnworth (6 assists) who was at her creative best. Once again, the Hawks defence was led by Danni Bone (5 steals) who is currently leading the league in steals and Marena Whittle (4 steals) who ranks amongst the lead leaders in both rebounds and blocks per game. The game also featured the debut of young star Ella Grigg who plays in both the Hawks Under 18 Girls 1 team and the Victorian Youth Championship Women’s team. An exciting moment for all involved and a player to watch out for in the future, congratulations Ella! Tonight, the Hawks will be looking to win back-to-back games for the second time this season, as the ladies continue to build upon the chemistry and style of play that will allow the Hawks to be at their competitive best. Thank you and I hope you enjoy tonight’s action.

Welcome to Round 6 of NBL1 basketball and tonight we welcome the Albury Wodonga Bandits to the Rings Stadium. The Bandits have had a reasonably slow start to the new season dropping their first 5 games, but last week showed exactly what they are capable of with an impressive 12 point win over the Waverley Falcons at Lauren Jackson Sports Stadium in Albury. Coach Brad Chalmers has recruited some serious talent with import Sharif Watson (24 points last week) and New Zealander Mitchell Dance (28 points and 10 rebounds last week) leading the way. At 19 years old, Dance has been really impressive showing an inside/outside game and toughness way beyond his years. Seven footer John Crnogorac has been impressive showing his ability to shoot all the way out to the 3 point line and Jacob Cincurak has been solid at both ends of the floor. Former NBL development player Bijan Johnson was not in uniform last week but if available will provide another scoring option for the Bandits and Shooter Jack Saunders has also been solid and averaging nearly 8 points per game. Last week for the Hawks was a memorable one. The Ballarat Miners are a dangerous team and the 2 point win was a big boost to the team. CJ Asuncion-Byrd and Jack Barry came up big in the last 2 minutes while Shaun Clarke and Matt Fennell we sensational all night. Adrien Sturt was also good for the Hawks having a major impact especially on the glass an at the defensive end of the court. It was far from a perfect performance though as the Hawks still have plenty of growth in them and tonight’s match up will be another massive test. The Bandits will provide the Hawks with an interesting contest tonight. They have length and the ability to score the ball in a big way. And play a tough physical brand of defence. Mitchell Dance has been outstanding averaging 23ppg and has the ability to take over a game. The Hawks will need to keep him in check while not allowing Watson, Johnson and co to get off the chain. The win last week will be a massive boost for the Bandits who will have absolute belief they are capable of beating any team in the league in 2021. Finally, last week we were able to thank some of our Clubs volunteers who are always giving up their time to help other, again we say thanks to you. Also to our sponsors including Noel Jones Maroondah, The Sebel Melbourne Ringwood and Fodmapped for you, thanks for your endless support of oor teams and our Club. Please support all our sponsors who support us. Enjoy the game.

Our incredible sponsor, The Sebel Ringwood has done it again. They recently opened the Orchard Restaurant and it’s spectacular. We have had a few Hawks members give it a try and the reports have been excellent. Check it out and tell them you are a Hawk for extra special treatment. Also keep an eye out for Ricardo, CJ , Chris and Demi who are loving their time at The Sebel. Great rooms, great restaurant and great people.

MEN’S NBL1 Ringwood Hawks 87 defeated Ballarat Miners 85 In perhaps the most exciting game of the round, the Ringwood Hawks have come away with a win in front of its home fans, edging out the Ballarat Miners. It was a tight, neck-and-neck affair from the opening tip, with neither team leading by more than seven points at any point in the game. Foul trouble was an issue for both sides, with Ringwood lead guard Matthew Snow and Ballarat playmaker Sam Short both fouling out in under 25 minutes. In Short’s absence, the Miners looked towards the strong one-two punch of Jock Perry and William Hickey, who combined for 46 points. It was Hickey who nearly proved to be the hero for the Miners, after collecting his own miss and scoring in the final 20 seconds to give Ballarat a one point lead. That lead would be short lived, as Ringwood hit back quickly through Jack Barry, who drained a three pointer in the final seconds to give the Hawks the advantage once again. Hickey had one final shot to win the game, however his three pointer was off-line. The loss is the third in a row for Ballarat, who will face top-two side Mt Gambier next week. WOMENS NBL1 Ringwood Hawks 67 defeated Ballarat Rush 50 The Ringwood Hawks have come away with a comfortable victory in front of its home fans against the Ballarat Rush. Ringwood jumped out of the gates quickly, opening up a 12 point advantage in the first term and never looking back. Funda Nakkasoglu led the way for the Hawks with her outside shooting. The guard finished with 20 points and a quartet of three-pointers. As for Ballarat, the side simply never seemed to get out of first gear. Only one player for the Rush, Kasey Burton, managed to make it into double-digit scoring figures, while the team also struggled with turnover issues (22 turnovers). After falling behind early, the closest the Rush would come to taking the lead came in the second quarter, after Clair Constable knocked down a triple to reduce Ringwood’s lead to six points. The loss is the fourth in a row for Ballarat. The side will look to bounce back next week against the winless Mt Gambier Pioneers.

Back in 2008, the Hawks Men’s team was just starting to develop in to the powerhouse they would become in the following years. At the end of May the Hawks faced the Hume City Broncos in a game they just had to win to keep the finals alive and were without their Import John White who was released during the week. White had a nagging knee injury and his on court struggles and lack of form saw him depart from the Club. There was no time to stop though and the Hawks looked to their superstar Luke McMillan who nailed 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds Willie Weimer who bagged 17 and Matt Snow , Andrew Battye and Joel Seach all chipped in with double digits. The Hawks won the game 25 points at the Rings which was known as Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre.

Back in 2010, the Ringwood Lady Hawks were in their first season of State Championship basketball after rising from Division 2. On this date, the girls were facing a tough and talented Geelong Cats team at the Rings. The girls had an encouraging first season but in this game fell by 10 points. Hawks Import Amanda Behnke led the scorers with 18 points, while Katie Shanahan nailed 17 points. Other notable Hawks players in uniform were Lisa Ewin, Regan Gardiner, Jess McPherson, Shelley Mottin and Allison Dunkley-Smith. The team was Coached by Tim Mottin, the man who is still on the sidelines tonight.
