HISTORICAL LOGOS OF THE RINGWOOD HAWKS

Celebrating the Clubs 40th year of Basketball

With Matt Hickey unavailable to call tonight’s game, we welcome another Man in the Stand in Scott Grimster. Scotty G is a veteran behind the Mic calling sports on radio over many years and lucky for us he is a Basketball junkie and is all over the NBL1 league. Thanks to Scotty for coming along and providing the energy that the Hawks Live Streams have every week. Joining Scotty on the mic tonight with his own style of special comments is former SEABL Coach Kevin Nolan. Nolan is another Basketball lifer who has forgotten more about the game than most know and he calls it how it is. Nolan has Coached the Waverley Falcons, Bulleen Boomers and the Mount Gambier Pioneers and has worked with some big names including former Philadelphia 76ers Coach Brett Brown. Back in the Day, Grimster and Nolan were must hear radio covering SEABL games on 97.7fm. The boys are back tonight and will be entertaining so if you can’t get to the game you need to tune it and enjoy all the action with these Legends.

Welcome everyone to NBL1 Women’s Basketball, tonight the Ringwood Hawks take on the Ballarat Rush in the NBL1 Game of the week. The Hawks are coming off a disappointing loss against the Knox Raiders and will need to bounce back hard tonight. Marena Whittle had an amazing performance against the Raiders, dropping 38 points on an efficient 12 for 21 shooting, but other than Marena the team struggled to get points on the board except for the reliable Jacqui Trotto who had 13 points. Last week the team was without a few stars including Funda Nakkasoglu and Demi Skinner who were both sick. We hope to have them both back in the line up tonight. The Ballarat Rush are also coming off a disappointing loss as they fell to the talented Frankston Blues by 11 points and are looking to get back in the win column this week. Leading the way in scoring was Claire Constable who had 14 points for Ballarat. The biggest defensive focus for the Hawks will be Alicia Froling who has been a great signing for the Rush and has an impact at both ends. The Rush are Coached by SEABL and Ballarat Legend Eric Hayes. The Ballarat rush are a good rebounding team as they grabbed 57 boards in their last game but also turned the ball over 25 times so if the Hawks can pressure them on the offensive end and box out they will put themselves in a good position to come away with the win. The Hawks shot 37% from the three, 33% from the field and 64% from the free throw line in their last game so there will need to be some improvement in some of these areas. Tonight’s game is important to both teams who are both sitting just outside the top 8 and would both consider this an important game even though it is so early in the season. Enjoy.

Welcome to the Rings Stadium for some Round 5 NBL1 action and tonight is going to be a good one as we welcome the Ballarat Miners. The Miners have had an up and down start to the season with 2 wins from their 5 games but did have an impressive win on the road against North West Tasmania. Last week the Miners lost a hard fought game against the Frankston Blues at home by 12 points but they were in the game and played well. There is plenty of talent on this Miners roster led by Davo Hickey who has crossed to the Miners from Melbourne this season and he been in great form averaging nearly 19ppg . Size is no problem for this team either with Deng Acouth and Jock Perry roaming the key. Acouth at 6’10 and Perry at 7 foot are not only long but also athletic and are having a major impact defensively this season. Melbourne United guard Sam Short will run the team from the point while athletic Matt Kenyon (formerly Dandenong and Brisbane Bullets) will provide a scoring punch from the perimeter and attacking the basket. Another former NBL player Daniel Joyce ,will come off the bench and provide leadership and toughness. The Miners are Coached by former NBL player, NBL Championship winning Coach and Aussie Opals Head Coach Brendan Joyce. Last week for the Hawks was an important win. It was great to finally get Ricardo Martin on court and he was terrific on debut with 16 points. Also the return of CJ Asuncion-Byrd was a massive boost and also Nathan Truman who is working his way back from injury. The guys did play well in patches against the Knox Raiders but will need to be better if they are going to get past a team as talented at Ballarat. Adrien Sturt is having a great season so far and Matt Fennell has been good the last few weeks. Matt Snow, Jack Barry and Shaun Clarke have been consistent contributors as has Trevor Latham who always offers plenty off the bench. Tonight’s game will be an entertaining and athletic contest. There are some large human beings on the court and some extroadinary athletes who can do things that mere mortals can only dream of. But all that aside, this game may hinge on the Hawks ability to be able to contain the twin towers and keep Hickey and Kenyon reasonably quiet. The Miners are a good defensive team and the Hawks will need to execute well to create good scoring options. Defensively, the Hawks must also keep the towers off the glass or it will be a difficult night at the office. Tonight we are also paying tribute to all the volunteers that make our Club great. A massive thank you from me and all the Hawks players for what you give back to the Hawks and the Sport. we appreciate you. Thanks to all our sponsors including Noel Jones Maroondah, The Sebel Ringwood and Fodmap Friendly and we hope you enjoy this NBL1 Game of the week. It will be a rippa.

Last season the Hawks had import Tim Guers on court and ready to go but as we know covid put an end to that. Guers is currently in an extra long quarantine in Vietnam and looking forward to a season with the Thang Long Warriors. The Warriors play in the Vietnam Basketball Association and he will be based in Ho Chi Minh City. Good luck Timmy G and we hope to see you back with the Hawks at some stage soon. Former Hawks 1999 Championship winner and League MVP Ryan Miller is the new Assistant Coach at Creighton University in Nebraska. Miller was formerly Assistant at TCU and said this week he was looking for a new challenge and the Blue Jays are a Basketball powerhouse. Hawks junior Yuot Gai is still in the USA and is currently sorting through over 50 Division 1 Scholarship offers he has received. At 6’10 and with a smooth perimeter shot, Gai is hot property and still has 2 years of College eligibility left. Another former Hawk Ella Ogier is on the move in her College career after confirming she will be off to San Jose State after 2 seasons at Nebraska Omaha.

Men Ringwood Hawks 92 def Knox Raiders 73 The Ringwood Hawks have gotten back to an even win-loss record after handling the visiting Knox Raiders at home. Apart from some early lead changes across the first three minutes of action, Ringwood led for the entire contest. The Hawks went into the first quarter break with a three point lead before expanding on it in the second period. While the three-point shot was lacking for Ringwood, the side more than made up for it with an aggressive interior game plan. CJ Asuncion-Byrd led the way with 20 points, while Matthew Snow tallied a 13 -point, 10 assist double-double off the bench to help the Hawks extend its lead to as many as 17 points. Knox did its best in the second half to get back into the game, drawing as close as seven points, however it was too little, too late for the Raiders. Simon Grant did his best for Knox, scoring 18 points to lead his side, however the team missed 23 of its 27 three-point attempts, which seemed to take the wind out of the Raiders’ sails. Women Ringwood Hawks 69 def by Knox Raiders 83 The Knox Raiders remain amongst the league's undefeated teams after winning a hard fought game on the road against the Ringwood Hawks. Knox led from the opening tip, pulling ahead by as many as 21-points in the second term. Things however changed in the second half for both sides as the Hawks found a nice rhythm behind the stellar play of Marena Whittle. Whittle played all 40 minutes and led all scorers in the contest, tallying 38 points to go along with her 15 rebounds. Behind the play from Whittle, Ringwood closed the gap to just three-points with about five minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the comeback could not be completed, as Knox locked into its ball-movement focussed game plan to hold on to the lead, ultimately resulting in the 14-point win.

Back in 1994, the Hawks recruited two talented American players, Brad Stillings and Justin Lord. Here is an article from Hawk Talk announcing their arrival. If you remember Brad and Justin, this was 27 years ago.. On this day back in 2005, the Ringwood Lady Hawks travelled to Traralgon and faced off against the Latrobe City Energy. The girls were coached by Kelly Breazeale and were playing Big V Division 2 at the time but on this night handed the Energy a basketball lesson winning by 41 points. Melissa Bower was the teams leading scorer nailing 23 points while Nat Seach chimed in with 14. The Fimmel sisters, Sarah and Hannah shared 15 points while Nicky Swan had 11 and Lisa Ewin finished with 10. This 2005 just missed the Finals by a single game but the seeds were sown for the Hawks who would rise to Championship level in a few short seasons after. Pic Hannah Fimmel
