HISTORICAL LOGOS OF THE RINGWOOD HAWKS
Celebrating the Clubs 40th year of Basketball
Two games in three days… Ringwood Hawks basketball is coming at you thick and fast! We return to Norwood for another exciting clash, this time playing local rivals Kilsyth. The Cobras women’s team is having a decent season so far in 2021 and find themselves in the finals race. It should come as a surprise to no one that WNBL star Lauren Scherf spearheads Kilsyth’s squad and she will no doubt give Ringwood plenty of headaches on both sides of the floor. Carly Turner and Tia Hay are the other Cobras to watch out for, and they will be key for Kilsyth if the Hawks manage to lockdown Scherf. For Ringwood, they will need to find scorers to help out Nakkasoglu and Whittle, with ball movement and movement off the ball being key. Both the Kilsyth and Ringwood men’s teams are sitting mid-table, wanting to make a run before we get to the back end of the season. Both of these teams are great examples of fantastic programs, with a number of juniors pushing up through the ranks to eventually find themselves on an NBL1 roster. Adrian Tomada and Ben Ursich lead the way for Kilsyth, with the latter being a sniper from the land of plenty. The Hawks will again look to their stars and senior corps, with the likes of Matt Fennell and Matt Snow to be crucial down the stretch. A fantastic rivalry set to be ignited again, get set for another ripping set of NBL1 games.
Welcome to Norwood Secondary College for round 11 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Kilsyth Cobras. The Cobras have had a strong start to the season winning five of their eight games so far and sit eighth on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 10 rounds. The Cobras come into this game having won last time out against the Ballarat Rush to solidify their position in the top eight and will be looking to build their second two-game win streak tonight against the Hawks. The Cobras are led by stars Lauren Nicholson who is currently averaging 21.00 ppg, 6.50 rpg, 5.50 apg and 2.00 spg, Lauren Scherf who is averaging 16.62 ppg, 11.50 rpg, 2.75 apg and 1.25 bpg and Carly Turner who is averaging 11.37 ppg, 6.87 rpg, 3.37 apg and 2.12 spg coming into round 11. For the Hawks, as we continue an exciting week featuring three games in four nights, we will be looking to build and continue to regain our rhythm after the latest layoff due to lockdown. We know this is an important game against our local rivals and a win tonight will continue to show our competitiveness as we fight for a playoff spot. Leading the Hawks so far this year are Funda Nakkasoglu who is currently averaging 19.33 ppg, 5.00 rpg and 3.00 apg, Marena Whittle who is averaging 16.42 ppg, 11.71 rpg, 2.57 apg, 2.28 spg and 1.57 bpg and Demi Skinner who is averaging 11.50 ppg and 4.16 rpg coming into round 11. Whilst this is our last game at Norwood this year, after a wonderful week and hopefully another exciting night tonight, we look forward to playing host to our NBL1 competitor’s here again next season. Thank you for coming to support us and I hope you enjoy tonight’s action.

It is great to be back at this beautiful Norwood venue for another night of men’s NBL1 Basketball. Tonight we welcome a local rival, the Kilsyth Cobras. The Cobras have had a very solid start to the season with 5 wins from their 8 games so far this season and have a very strong and deep roster. First year Coach Pete Godfrey, formerly from Hawthorn Magic, has the team playing well at both ends of the floor and they will be excited for the challenge tonight. Last weekend the Cobras put the clamps on Ballarat holding them to just 50 points, an impressive effort and that win has them solidly placed in the top 8. The Cobras are led by some impressive talent like quick guard Adrian Tomada and Ben Ursich who are both capable of putting up big numbers. Veteran Tim Lang is still a great option in the post while Joel Naburgs, Corey Jeffs, Deng Riak and Mitch Dielemans provide plenty of support. The Hawks will need all hands on deck if they are to get a big win tonight. Adrien Sturt has been in great form recently and it will be great to have Matt Snow back in uniform tonight after missing the last three games. Jack Barry has been a great addition to the Hawks as have CJ Asuncion-Byrd and Ricardo Martin who have been consistent contributors at both ends of the court. With the Cobras line up, the Hawks will need Shaun Clarke and Trevor Latham at their best and an aggressive Matt Fennell will also be an important key to this game. With the season starting to get to the pointy end, games like tonight take on extra significance. A win for either team will go along way to keeping them right in that meaty part of the top 8. For the loser, the pressure builds in an always extremely competitive NBL1 competition.

NBL1 PRESS RELEASE NBL1 is pleased to announce Foot Locker, the world’s leading retailer of sneaker and basketball culture, has become a League Partner. Under the agreement, Foot Locker will reward the NBL1 Men’s and Women’s Player of the Week in each Conference with a $200 Foot Locker voucher, including retrospectively awarding each of the 42 players of the week so far in 2021 with a voucher. The Foot Locker Players of the Week will be announced every Tuesday on the NBL1 social media channels. Foot Locker will also reward each Conference’s Men’s and Women’s MVP with a $750 voucher while the NBL1 Finals Men’s and Women’s MVP will receive a $1500 voucher. Foot Locker’s partnership will support the on-going growth of NBL1 in each state. NBL1 Chief Commercial Officer Brad Joyner said: “We are thrilled to announce this exciting new partnership with Foot Locker. “Foot Locker has had a long association with basketball as one of the world’s leading retailers of basketball shoes and apparel. Foot Locker’s brand and values align with the NBL1 and we look forward to this being the beginning of a long and successful partnership. “This agreement is also a win for all NBL1 players whose efforts will now be rewarded with Foot Locker vouchers. The players are the stars of the show in NBL1 and we are excited to partner with a company that will reward our athletes for their performances.”
When we lost our 2020 season of Basketball, it was a difficult time for everyone who loves to play or watch Basketball. As a way of paying tribute to our 41 VJBL Hawks teams and 380 players, the Hawks NBL1 Men and Women’s teams are wearing the surnames of each family on our True To Ringwood green jersey tonight. The uniform is based on the design of the first ever Hawks uniform that was worn in the late 80’s and 90’s. This jersey has been sent out as a thank you to all those Hawks families who donated their fees back to the Club last year. Tonight we will be giving some more of these beautiful jerseys away to kids.
Nate Champion was a 6’3 Guard that played for the Hawks for just two seasons but has a massive impact on the Club in that time. A dynamic left hander who could do it all, he led the Hawks to a Championship in 2016. Since returning home to the USA, Champion has landed the Head Coaching position at the College he represented so well as a player, Lemoyne College. Lemoyne is located in Syracuse, New York and he has been a huge success already winning Coach of the year in his conference.
