HISTORICAL LOGOS

Well it’s good to be back behind the mic and we wish Matt Hickey the best on his overseas travels. Nice time to get out of a chilly Melbourne Hick!! Tonight will be very interesting with the visiting Keilor Thunder travelling across Melbourne to battle the Hawks in what will certainly be two really interesting contests. The Thunder men and Women’s team have both struggled to finish out games but both teams are talented and capable of competing with the leagues best. A little bit of history for you, did you know that Keilor previously were a member of the SEABL and had some very good teams back in the day. Mark Landells was the well known head coach of Keilor when they were at their best and the Thunder were a serious Championship contender. There were some familiar names like Ken Epperson, Dwayne Cross, Matt Bell, Andrew Simons, Ricky Nedd, Terrence Scruggs, Darryl Bayliss and Stuey Lewin to name a few. The Keilor stadium, which has recently been updated, was originally built for the St.Kilda Saints to play NBL games out of in the late 80’s . The stadium was nice but it was quickly decided shortly after that the Saints needed to move in to city and play at the glasshouse. The Keilor Thunder were born shortly after and adopted the Saints red, white and black colours. Back to tonight’s games though, The Hawks Women will go in hot favourites with Diggy, Marta and Marena all in great form and on a nice little winning streak while the men’s game will be a close contest but the Hawks addition of Emmett Naar will certainly help them tonight and for the rest of the season. Enjoy !!! Finally, you will see the orange socks on the players tonight, this is part of the NBL1 Mental Health Round. Mental Health is something we are all invested in so if you would like to donate just scan the QR Code.

Welcome to The Rings for round 8 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Keilor Thunder. The Thunder are 4-6 on the season and sit 13th on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 7 rounds. The Thunder come into this game having won three of their last five games and they will be looking to continue that winning form tonight against the Hawks.

The Thunder are led by stars Madeleine Garrick who is currently averaging 21.33 ppg, 5.22 rpg, 5.22 apg and 2.22 spg and Monique Andriuolo who is averaging 18 ppg, 7.30 rpg and 1.1 spg. The Hawks come into this game having won three in a row, including a tough double header heading into the long weekend. The first was a one-point win on the road against a very talented Bendigo Braves team (77-78). The Hawks were led by Marena Whittle who had 27 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks, Digna Strautmane who had 17 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a block and Marta Hermida who had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

The second win came at home against the Eltham Wildcats (96-69). In this game, the Hawks were led by Marta Hermida who had 24 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and a block, Marena Whittle who had 23 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block, Digna Strautmane who had 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks and Zoe Jenkins who had 11 points (3 3PM) and a block. This game also featured the debut of Kiahna Liddy, who had been injured since round 1 of the Victorian Youth Championship Women’s season. It was great to have Kiahna back and we look forward to her continuing to develop as the second half of the season begins. Tonight’s game will be a big one, thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy tonight’s action. GO HAWKS!

After a week’s break thanks to the Queens Birthday long weekend, we are back at it again tonight and we welcome the Keilor Thunder to the Rings. The Thunder are enjoying their first season in NBL1 and boast a very talented roster that has shown they are very capable of beating any team in the League. The team is led by two very good imports in Tyler Kidd and Jacob Lampkin who were teammates back in high school and certainly know where each other is on the court. NBL development player Zac Triplett give this team plenty of scoring punch as does the athletic Kian Dennis who also had NBL experience with the Brisbane Bullets. Keilor’s 2 wins and 8 losses so far is certainly no reflection on their abilities as the Thunder have battles injury issues so far this season. Before the break, the Hawks split their double header with a disappointing loss at Bendigo but showed some heart with a hard earned win over Eltham at the Rings on the Sunday. The recent addition of Emmett Naar has been excellent on and off the court with Emmett already a popular part of the team. Tim Guers, Kyle Daggett and Shaun Clarke continued their good form and the Hawks currently sit 5 wins and 5 losses to this point of the season. And special thanks to Damien Smith for taking the reins on short notice and getting his first win as an NBL1 head coach. The Hawks have been pretty good at home this season but must be at their best tonight with a Thunder team that is expected to be at their strongest. Lampkin must be kept off the boards by the Hawks and Kidd must be kept out of the paint or they will have some issues defensively. Guys like Lewis, Beasley and Cirkook Riak are capable of putting up big nights so also must be watched closely. The Players and staff of the Hawks would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers and Hawks junior players for you support of out 2022 NBL1 season. We hope you enjoy the game.

Don’t

*Before the Queens Birthday bye weekend, the Hawks men split their double header with a loss at Bendigo but a win at home over the Eltham Wildcats. Pleasingly for the Hawks was the impact of Emmett Naar who has slotted in to the team like a hand in a glove.

*It has been a great run for the Hawks women who are sitting in 2nd place and remain unbeaten at home. The Girls will be heading in to the second half of the season though without Paige Price who has headed to Queensland to follow her AFLW dream and also play for SW Metro Pirates in the NBL1 North. *Congrats to two NBL1 South players who have been selected to represent the Australian Boomers at the upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. Hobart’s Sam McDaniel and Geelong’s Jack White have made the 12 man team that features 8 players currently playing NBL1 somewhere in the Country. *The weekend off Basketball duties was a great opportunity for some of the Hawks players to get away for a few days. Diggy and Marta headed to Bali and loved every second of it while Kyle went fishing up in Cooktown and Cairns. Tim Guers on the other hand just relaxed on a Noosa beach with his girlfriend Hera. Not bad guys, well played!!

*Did you know the Hawks are hosting a 3 X 3 Hustle event coming up on the 26th June. Grab 3 friends and put a team in. You will have a blast. go to 3x3hustle,com to register a team. But do it asap as time is running out. *Finally, Hawks imports will be doing individual Coaching over the school holidays, email coach@ringwoodbasketball.com for more info.
