HISTORICAL LOGOS

Eastland Shopping Centre

175 Maroondah Hwy, Ringwood. 3134.

We’re back! After what seems like an age Ringwood Hawks NBL1 basketball is back! Both teams have a variety of new and old faces and will be looking to get their 2022 campaigns underway in style against Kilsyth. The Ringwood woman look destined for the playoffs in 2021 before Covid forced the season to shut down. They have managed to bring back some key players in the shape of Marena Whittle, Toni Farnworth and Dani Bone, and have replaced the talent they lost with the likes of Digna Strautmane and Bella Niven-Brown. The Cobras will once again be led by superstar Lauren Scherf and there’s no doubt she’ll be at the top of Coach Mottin’s scouting report. The Hawks men will be the youngest we’ve seen them in the long time with the likes of Kaide Fittolani, Matt Roberts, Angok Angok and Seb Lees all being registered players. However, the experienced core is back for another go around and will once again be joined by guard Jack Barry. Ken Harrington has also made some moves from outside the club, with Jack Roberts coming into the fold from Knox, Cairns Taipans development player Robbie Heath joining the team and import Kyle Daggett signing on. The Cobras are another team with a mixture of youth and experience. Veteran Tim Lang is back for another season and will be joined by former Kilsyth juniors such as Ben Ursich and Adi Tomada. It’s also worth keeping your eye on import Trey Moses who is expected to impress. It’s set to be an exciting (and hopefully long) season, so let’s hoop!

NBL1 basketball is back and what better way to kick off a new season than a local derby against the Kilsyth Cobras. In what has certainly been a long off-season (after NBL1 in 2021 was cancelled), players, coaches and fans alike are all looking forward to the season ahead.

In an off-season defined by player movement, the Hawks bring an exciting roster to The Nest where we will certainly be looking to start the season with a victory. Tonight, it is Norwood Secondary College that the Hawks will call home for round 1 of the 2022 NBL1 South season and what better way to demonstrate our wonderful partnership than by debuting the Norwood Nights jerseys. The splash of purple will add a certain flavour to the much-loved Black jerseys this year and we look forward to returning to Norwood later in the year also.

Looking ahead to the game and the matchups that await, your Hawks are pleased to welcome back Danni Allen (nee Bone), Toni Farnworth, Jacqui Trotto and Marena Whittle to the team for 2022. As mentioned, the new-looking Hawks outfit are going to be exciting combining the returning core with the new additions of Marta Hermida (Spain), Zoe Jenkins (Knox Raiders/Loyola Marymount University), Kiahna Liddy (Victorian Youth Championship Women), Bella Niven-Brown (Hawthorn Magic), Paige Price (Indiana University) and Digna Strautmane (Latvia). Your Hawks are also pleased to have the youthful quartet of Jenna Anderson, Rebecca Horvat, Erin Hynson and Tayah Kelly join us for the 2022 NBL1 South season. Whilst the team might be different, the goal remains the same.

Thank you to everyone for your support in the off-season and in the lead up to tonight’s action. We look forward to your continued support throughout the season and we hope you enjoy the ride. GO HAWKS!

Paige Price joins the Hawks after a season of D1 College ball at the University of Indiana. She is a former National junior team player and also was drafted by St.Kilda in to the AFLW. Marta Hermida is from Spain but has recently graduated for Boise State University. Marta is an excellent shooter and clever passer. Digna Strautmane is from Latvia but has played 5 years of College ball in the USA, 4 at Syracuse and one at Georgia Tech. She has represented Latvia and is able to play inside and outside. Zoe Jenkins has returned to Melbourne after playing D1 basketball at Loyola Marymount University. Zoe is an outstanding shooter and defender. Bella Niven-Brown is stepping up to NBL1 after playing last season at Hawthorn. She spend the WNBL season as a development player with the Melbourne Boomers and is expected to have an immediate impact. Kyle Daggett is from the Maryland, USA having just graduated from Shepherd University. Daggett had an outstanding season averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds per game. Robbie Heath has joined the Hawks from Cairns NBL and is simply one of the elite scorers in this years NBL1. Talented Jack Roberts is from Knox and Blackburn and when healthy will have a big impact as will this guy #5. Whats his name again???

Welcome to another season of NBL1 basketball and let’s hope it’s uninterrupted and we can put the disappointment of 2020 and 2021 well and truly behind us. To launch the NBL1 South season in a big way tonight’s we start with a local rival in the Kilsyth Cobras. The Cobras are again a team that will be right in Finals contention. They have welcomed back junior star and quality shooter Jamie Ahale (brother of Hawks Lachie) from College and also recruited a new import in big Trey Moses. Quick guards Adrian Tomada and Mitch Dielemans are back as is reliable Ben Ursich and Corey Jeffs. Brisbane Bullets star Deng Deng is also a big signee for the Cobras but may be unavailable due to NBL commitments. Veteran Coach Pete Godfrey will again lead the Cobras. You will see a new look Hawks team tonight but with a sprinkle of old faces as well. Shaun Clarke, Matt Snow, Matt Fennell and Trevor Latham will provide the veteran leadership but the team has a very much younger feel with the inclusion of 6 youth players. The addition of 4 new experienced players really gives the team some scoring punch with new import Kyle Daggett and Cairns Taipan Robbie Heath. Expected to have a big impact. Jack Roberts has joined the Club after a good season with Knox in 2021 but he has missed pre season as he recovers from an ankle injury. The final signing is another big one with the return of import Tim Guers. Tim was here in 2020 and quickly showed up his value but unfortunately was forced home due to covid. He also signed with us in 2021 but was unable to get in the Country. We are so happy that Tim keeps committing to the Club and we look forward to his all round game. On behalf of the players and Coaches, I would like to thanks all the sponsors and volunteers who have helped get our NBL1 teams on the court for 2022. I would like to welcome new sponsors Eastland and Realm Investments and of course Brett and everyone at Noel Jones . I hope you enjoy tonight’s game and I hope you follow us all season long on our new journey. Go Hawks.

In 1979 and 1980, the St.Kilda Saints Basketball Club won the NBL Championship. They were simply the powerhouse of Australian Basketball. In 1991, as Basketball grew in Australia at a staggering rate, the Saints merged with the Nunawading Spectres to become the Southeast Melbourne Magic and were forgotten. Not anymore, on the 7th May, the Saints will fly again as the Hawks will wear the famour red, white and black and pay homage to one of the greatest Basketball Clubs in Australian Basketball history. See you there.
