HISTORICAL LOGOS

We’re back again for more hoops, with Ringwood hosting Mt Gambier! The Hawks women face a big test, with the Pioneers one of just two teams in the conference that are still undefeated. Sherrie Calliea has been leading the way for the visitors, averaging 23.2 points, 5.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game. Cassandra Brown has been also been brilliant recording 22 points and 7.8 rebounds per outing. However, Ringwood is a legitimate chance of handing Mt Gambier its first loss for the season, having only dropped one game themselves. Marena Whittle (17.2ppg & 12.5rpg) has done it all to start the season, while Digna Strautmane (4.8bpg & 3spg) has been an incredible defensive pillar. Marta Hermida also caught fire last week.

Ringwood has a big task ahead of them in the second game as well, with the Mt Gambier men also undefeated. Michael Harris has been on another level for the Pioneers, averaging 28.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He has been well supported by the likes of Tom Kubank (18.8ppg @ 62.5%), Jordan Rawls (15.2ppg @ 72.2%) and the league’s assist leader, Kane de Wit (7apg). Despite the incredible start to the season from Mt Gambier, the Hawks will enter this game with belief after their stunning come from behind win against Nunawading. The Ringwood faithful finally got their first glimpse of Tim Guers and it was well worth it, with the import scoring 28 points including the game-winning basket. Robbie Heath (18.5ppg) has also made a strong start to the season, while the Hawks coaching staff will be

Welcome to The Rings for round 4 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Mt Gambier Pioneers. The Pioneers are 4-0 on the season and sit atop the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 3 rounds. The Pioneers come into this game having won twice last weekend, firstly against the undefeated Casey Cavaliers (86-88) and then against the Dandenong Rangers (77-92) and they will be looking to continue their winning streak tonight against the Hawks. The Pioneers are led by stars Sherrie Calleia who is currently averaging 23.25 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.75 apg and 2 spg and Cassandra Brown who is averaging 22 ppg, 7.75 rpg, 2 apg and 1.25 spg. Last week, the Hawks won a tough home game against the Nunawading Spectres. A 15-point lead after the first quarter (22-7) wound up being the final margin (74-59), yet the game was competitive until the end. After being down by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, the Spectres clawed away at the lead and a strong second quarter (13-23), cut the lead to 5 points at halftime. The Spectres took the lead in the third quarter but a late Hawks run gave the home side a 7-ppint lead at three-quarter time. A strong fourth quarter by the Hawks (20-12) ensured they would go on to victory in front of a packed-out Rings stadium. The Hawks were led by Marena Whittle who had 22 points, 19 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, Marta Hermida who had 23 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block and Digna Strautmane who had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 3 blocks. Tonight’s game will be a big one, thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy tonight’s action.

A big welcome to the Rings Stadium and to the visiting Mount Gambier Pioneers who are making their second trip to Melbourne in just 6 days. The Pioneers have had a red hot start to the new season winning all 4 of their games including 2 last week on the road over Casey and Dandenong. Their performance against the Cavaliers was exceptional scoring 117 points and shooting the ball at an incredible 60% from the field. There is plenty of talent led by Adelaide NBL players Nick Marshall and the aggressive and athletic Michael Harris. Both have been on fire but are getting plenty of support from Jordan Rawls, Tom Kubank and the reliable Kane DeWitt. Veteran Erik Burdon is still providing a lethal boost off the bench. Richard Hill is again at the reins of the Pioneers. Last week was an encouraging performance by the Hawks but there is certainly a lot of room for improvement. Tim Guers and Robbie Heath were both very good but are still settling in to the team as is Jack Roberts who was good in his Hawks debut. Kyle Daggett and Shaun Clarke have both had good starts to the season as well. Tonight’s game will hinge on the Hawks ability to be able to slow down the Pioneers in transition and their ability to nail the 3 ball off drives and kicks. If the Pioneers excel in this area it could be a difficult night for the Hawks at the defensive end. Both teams have the ability to score though so it should be a reasonably high scoring and exciting spectacle. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers and we hope you continue to support the Hawks all season.

Don’t

*It might be happening in NBL1 East, but how about the numbers Lauren Jackson is putting up. Clearly the East Women’s division is not as strong as the other NBL1 leagues but Jackson is showing no mercy and last week nailed 41 points, grabbed 13 rebound in just 24 minutes. How old is she you ask….41 years young. *The return of the St.Kilda Saints to Australian Basketball was a massive hit at the Rings last Saturday night with the Saints (Hawks) delivering a Saintly performance winning on a tough lay up by Tim Guers in the dying seconds. The Hawks are a surprise packet so far winning 3 or their 4 games. *Andrew Gaze’s return to the Melbourne Tigers as head coach has been solid with the Tigers winning two of their first 4 games but last week the Nunawading Spectres showed the Tigers they need to be switched on at all times. A 32 point demolishing on their home court sent that message nice and clear. *There is always a little more pep in the step of Ringwood Hawks Assistant Coach Damien Smith when the Hawks team faces the Mount Gambier Pioneers. Smith spent a few seasons at Mt.Gambier and helped the Pioneers win a national Championship.

Robbie Heath

Today our VYCW Ringwood Hawks face the Keilor Thunder here at The Rings, with Round 8 marking our half way point of the season playing our 11th game today. Our Hawks had a successful Round 7, taking one tough win on the road in Ballarat, while just falling in the final stages at home against Knox a week ago. The girls had an impressive first half in Ballarat, being up as much as 25 in the second quarter and playing with great energy. However the young Miner girls did not stop fighting, bringing the margin back to 11 points by games end. We walked away with a 5746 victory, making the bus ride home a little more enjoyable and giving us some good momentum heading into the second game of our double header. The front court paring of Zoe Servinis (15pts on 6/12 shooting, 11reb) and Erin Hynson (4pts, 14 reb, 3 blk which felt like 6) were huge throughout this match. Sunday saw us face a tough Knox squad that always find a way to push you, and that’s exactly what they did. After a strong start from our Hawks, the Raiders girls managed to slowly work themselves back into the game, taking the lead in the final quarter. After a late game defence stop, we were unable to convert the game winning shot which saw us fall 58-59. Paige Price (16pts, 16reb) had her presence felt throughout the game, while Colby Rough (10pt, 4reb) had her best game of the season with some incredible defence after stepping up in game due to injuries. We look forward to facing Keilor once again this weekend, who host one of the most well rounded sides in the competition. Our last matchup was very competitive, so we look forward to another close matchup today.

Welcome to round 8, another double-header, and already past the half-way point of the season for your Hawks (6-5). After being on the road at Casey yesterday afternoon to take on the Cavaliers, we are back home to welcome the Bulleen Boomers. The boys were in fine form last weekend, sweeping their double-header against the Waverley Falcons (90-76) and Dandenong Rangers (87-70). Both the Falcons and Rangers feature long line-ups, and was without a doubt, a battle of the bigs. Starting forward Bayley Rough had a massive weekend, boasting 18pts, 9rebs and 3blks at Waverley, backing it up with 31pts, 14rebs and 2blks in a Blue Carpet performance against the Rangers. Stepping up on the road was guard Ben Linkin (21pts, 10rebs) and Lachie Ahale (16pts, 8rebs, 5asts), whilst Angok Angok (15pts, 7rebs) and Sebastien Lees (12pts, 6rebs, 7asts) got it done in the W at home. It is exactly these broad contributions from the senior players, coupled with growing contributions from the younger guys that have enabled the current momentum to build. Bulleen (0-9) join us today after losing a close one against Casey last weekend (87-97). Young gun Joel Foxwell (25pts, 6rebs, 3stls) carried the brunt, well supported by Isaiah Harvey (19pts, 5rebs) and Lucas Soklevski (12pts, 6rebs). Also facing a double-header this weekend, the Boomers, like your Hawks, will no doubt have some weary bodies on the floor today. Look for both teams to got deep into bench rotations, bringing in fresh legs to spark a run. The difference today could well be someone unexpected having an impact. The VYCM would like to thank the referees, score bench officials, committee, and supporters for their contributions. Good luck to both teams and enjoy the game.
