HISTORICAL LOGOS

It’s Breast Cancer round and the Ringwood Hawks are back at home this weekend where they will host local rivals Nunawading. The women will get things underway in what is sure to be a thrilling contest. After a perfect opening weekend, the Hawks were brought back down to earth against Geelong, losing by nine points to the Sara Blicavs led team. They will be eager to get back on the winners’ list, with defensive powerhouse Digna Strautmane likely to set the tone in the paint. They face a Spectres team who have started the season 1-1, going down to the Rangers on the buzzer last week. They have talent across the board, including former Ringwood imports Megan Mullings and Cassidy Mihalko, who will no doubt be welcomed back with open arms!

It was a similar story for the men last week, who struggled across the board against a polished Geelong team. They will look to bounce back against the Spectres, who have managed to grind their way to 2-0 record thanks to two tight wins. It’s a very different looking Nunawading team to years prior, with no Simon Conn in the middle. However, there will be one face that is familiar to the Hawks faithful, with CJ Asuncion-Byrd lining up in the blue, red and white. Tonight we are also celebrating basketball history, with the Hawks wearing the iconic St Kilda Saints uniforms. The Saints were one of the great clubs in the early years of both the WNBL and NBL.

Let’s HOOP!

Welcome to The Rings for round 3 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Nunawading Spectres. The Spectres are 1-1 on the season and sit 9th on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 2 rounds. The Spectres come into this game having lost last time out against the Dandenong Rangers (73-70) and will be looking to bounce back tonight against the Hawks. The Spectres are led by stars Rachel Antoniadou who is currently averaging 15 ppg, 5 rpg, 3.50 apg, 1.50 spg and 1.50 bpg, Megan Mullings who is averaging 14 ppg, 6 rpg, 2 spg and 1.50 bpg and Rachel Brewster who is averaging 12 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.50 apg and 1.50 spg. Last week, the Hawks lost on the road against the Geelong Supercats. In what was a high scoring first quarter (29-25), things quickly changed after the quarter time break as the Hawks went on to score only 25 points for the rest of the game. The Supercats had a big second quarter (4-21) to pull away and the 13 point half time deficit remained similar for most of the second half as the Hawks fell 54-63. The Hawks were led by Marena Whittle who had 17 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, Marta Hermida who had 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals and Digna Strautmane who had 7 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks in a near 5x5 display. Tonight, marks a special occasion for a number of reasons. Firstly, our pink jerseys are a symbol of support for Pink Round as we raise awareness of breast cancer. Secondly, whilst on Pink Round, a special thank you to all the mothers in the crowd, we are grateful for your love and support and wish you a Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow. Finally, we would like to mention our NBL1 Men’s team as they pay homage to the St. Kilda Saints NBL club. Good luck tonight and make the Saints fans proud.

Welcome to Round 3 of NBL1 Basketball and a special event that we are very proud to be apart of. Tonight the Hawks will wear the iconic NBL uniform of the St.Kilda Basketball Club as we face the undefeated Nunawading Spectres. The Saints were an Aussie Basketball powerhouse when the NBL started in 1979 but merged with the Spectres in 1991 and have since been left in the past. Well, not anymore, tonight we bring the Club back to life and shine a light on the greatness that the Saints achieved in the formative years of the NBL. Please enjoy reading more on the Saints in tonight’s program. The Spectres will once again be a formidable opponent. Import Dain Switella is back and is a proven star of the league with his inside out game but it is the young talent that is what is impressive about the Spectres. Jack Gandolfo, Kingsley Box and big Callum Barker are all having fantastic seasons as is Jordan Geer who nailed an impressive 10 points to go with 5 rebound and 4 assists. Last week. Former Hawk CJ Asuncion-Byrd also makes his first trip back to the Rings after playing 12 NBL1 Games for the Hawks in 2020 and 2021. The Hawks performance last week was very disappointing but there was lessons to learn and I would expect a different focus from the team tonight. We will need the likes of Robbie Heath, Matt Fennell and Kyle Daggett to step up and keep the intensity level that is needed at this level of Basketball.

BRAZIL’S WORLD CLUB CHAMPS AND THE NBL…. It’s seems hard to believe now, but in 1981, the Saints decided to withdraw from the NBL finals after finishing on top and looking like certain Champions. What happened?

The Brian Kerle coached Saints received an invitation to represent Australia at the World Club Championships in Brazil and the tournament clashed with the NBL finals .The Saints asked the NBL to move the finals series to accommodate them but were turned down, so they withdrew and headed to Brazil. Launceston City Casino could not believe their luck and went on to claim the 1981 NBL Championship, a rare National success for Tasmania. In Brazil, the Saints were considered massive underdogs with big money Euro teams and a stacked Clemson Tigers the talk of the tournament. Most Basketball people outside of Australia had no idea that the sport was even played in Australia. The Saints quickly grab some admirers though with some great performances particularly against Maccabi who they beat by 3 points. The Saints nearly cause the boilover of the tournament against Clemson (who featured NBA legend Larry Nance) but fell in the final seconds by 4. The Saints finished 6th in the tournament and won plenty of respect but the tour came at a big cost. Super import Rocky Smith received a massive offer by a local Brazilian team and was lost to the Saints and Australia forever. To make matters worse, the Saints agreed to play in a super challenge tournament (against the likes of West Adelaide and Geelong) after returning to Australia and watched in horror as the great Danny Morseu tore his ACL in his knee and was soon lost to the Club.

Great Clubs are driven by great people and it was the work done by people like recruiting genius Bruce Johnstone, Secretary Eric Hingston, Ken Biddick, Brian Logan, long time team managers Kevin Logan and Ken Downer. In reality it takes a village to create a Club and make it special. The Saints life members list is as follows. “Pop” Ffelan, Billy Allars, Ian Brown, Ken Downer, L.Walker, Peter Harrington, Brian Logan, Ken Cole, W. Garraway, Robbie Johnstone, Bruce Johnstone, David Lindstrom, John Brodie, Rob McDonald, J.S. Down, Ian Farr, Kevin Logan, Bob Strachan, Daryl West, Brian Kerle, E.Johnstone, Social Life Members were Les Harrington, Julie Harrington, Doug Wilson and Bill Renwick. So many more people worked to make it special!, we wish we could name them all!!

Welcome to The Rings for our VYCW Ringwood Hawks Round 7 matchup against the Knox Raiders. We return home today after heading to Ballarat last night for a matchup against the Rush. Our Hawks have been busy since our last home game 2 weeks ago! Round 5 saw us take 2 tough losses to Kilsyth at home and Dandenong on the road. After a competitive first half against the Cobras, they were able to run over the top of our Hawks in the second half with their pure size good shooting. Although losing 45-72, we were able to take some positives from our performance, particularly in the first half. Zoe Servinis (11pts, 8reb, 4stl) was impressive. The second game of the round saw us heading to Dandenong, where our girls fought in a tough battle that came down to final seconds. Unfortunately, we were unable to take home the win, falling 51-53. We were solid on the defence end for large portions of the game, however our below average 3pt shooing and free throw percentage let the game go begging. Katrina Warton (8pts on 6-10 ft, 11reb, 4ast) had a strong performance, while Tayah Kelly (9pts, 6reb, 3ast, 3stl) played a vital role. Round 6 saw us travel to Nunawading to face a Spectres side that are one of the best in the competition. We were boosted by the addition of NBL1 player Paige Price, who gave us added versatility in the front court. Our girls fought extremely hard, playing with great energy and hustle but fell 46-69 after Nunawading ran away in the final term. Katrina Warton (15pts, 4reb) back up Round 5 with another strong performance, while Sophie Downes (8pts) was aggressive in her shot selection. We are excited to take the court again today to play a Raiders side that is always strong. We look forward to a competitive matchup!

It is great to be back home, in this second game of another double-header weekend. Your Hawks (4-5) were on the road at Waverley last night taking on the Falcons. This game was the first fixture clash with our NBL1 team, potentially giving some upand-comers the opportunity to demonstrate their improvement. In just our third home game of the season, we today welcome to The Rings the Dandenong Rangers for this round 7 matchup. Last weekend, the boys had a late Sunday road trip to Sandringham to take on the Sabres. Having seen what they are capable of during preseason, we knew the up-tempo offense and defence that could be expected, coupled with a long, athletic squad. The Sabres have the capacity to pour on the points, hitting triple digits against the Falcons the night before in a solid W. To the credit of the boys, they set a tone defensively, making it very difficult for the opposition, forcing 19TOs. Despite g iving up a few too many second chance points, and sending them frequently to the charity stripe, they did enough to come away with a 4-point win (78-74). An incredible six players ended up in double-figures, led by starting forward and NBL1 rostered player, Angok Angok (17pts, 9rebs, 3stls, 3blks). Joining the scoring spread were Harry Sealey (14pts, 4rebs), Ben Linkin (14pts), Bayley Rough (10pts, 7rebs, 3stls), Lachie Ahale (10pts, 6rebs), and Sebastien Lees (10pts). Dandenong (5-4) join us today coming off a split double-header last weekend. They overcame the Bulleen Boomers (90-71) on Saturday, before succumbing to the Nunawading Spectres on Sunday (80-86). For the Rangers, it has been a consistent spread of contributors this year. Jake Lynch (12.7pts, 3.2rebs), Elijah Duol (12.4pts, 5.0rebs), and veteran guard from Hawthorn, Knox and now returning to Dandenong, Lachlan Viney (11.9pts, 3.4rebs, 3.3asts, 3.3stls) have set the tone. With Knox having such a wide array of threats on the floor, your Hawks will once again attempt to set an accountable, defensive tone to minimise the impact of each individual. We will look to continue to grow in confidence offensively, getting deep into structures for high percentage looks.

In the only time the teams will meet this year, each side will be keen to get this one to remain on/improve to a winning record. Such pool crossovers are crucial to gain advantage on those vying for a top-four position come season end.
