HISTORICAL LOGOS

NBL1 returns to The Rings this Sunday with the Sandringham Sabres in town to play the Hawks. The Ringwood women continue to go from strength-to-strength, currently sitting 2nd on the ladder with a 13-3 record prior to this weekend. They will once again look to their star trio of Marta Hermida, Diggy Strautmane and Marena Whittle to carry the load, with the likes of Toni Farnworth and Zoe Jenkins also chipping in. It’s been a tougher season for the Sabres, who are 7-9 heading into the round and are desperate to get back to .500. Rachel Jarry is on the Sandringham roster and is obviously a star, meanwhile former Hawk Funda Nakkasoglu has been fitting in well at her new home, averaging 18.5 points per game. Ringwood will enter the game as favourites but will need to be perform well to walk away with the W. This matchup is a big one for the Hawks men, who enter the round with a 9-7 weekend. In a super tight mid-pack, wins against a team like Sandringham (10-6) who have a similar record are huge. The Hawks have been up and down throughout the season but now is the time to make a push. Emmett Naar and Tim Guers will obviously be key, meanwhile good minutes from the likes of Matt Fennell and Matt Roberts could be the difference. Sandringham will be a tough task though, because at full strength they have a tonne of NBL-level talent. Names like David Barlow, Shea Ili and David Okwera should be familiar to Aussie basketball fans and are all capable of turning in big performances. Joining me on todays call is Hawks great Sam Philp and his brand of special comments. Two massive games at The Rings and I can’t wait. Let’s hoop!

Welcome to The Rings for round 13 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play Dandenong Rangers. Dandenong are 3-13 on the season and sit 17th on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 12 rounds. The Rangers come into this game having a few close losses over their last five games and they will be looking to get a win tonight against the Hawks. The Rangers are led by stars Emilee Harmon who is currently averaging 24.30 ppg, 11.70 rpg, 2.80 apg and Gemma Potter who is averaging 15.15 ppg, 5.92 rpg, 3.07 apg, 1.61 spg. The Hawks come into this game having won four games in a row. Last week, the Hawks won an away game against Casey Cavaliers. It was a close game, the final margin was 3 points (74-77). The Hawks were led by Marena Whittle who had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, Marta Hermida who had 19 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal and Digna Strautmane who had 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. The second win came against the Launceston Tornadoes (92-59). In this game, the Hawks were led by Marta Hermida who had 20 points, 9 rebounds, 11 assists and 3 steals, Digna Strautmane who had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, Toni Farnworth who had 22 points, 8 rebounds 4 assists and a steal. Today’s game will be a big one, thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy the action.

Welcome to Round 13 of NBL1 Men’s Basketball. Today we welcome the Sandringham Sabres to the Rings for a game that is very important to both teams. With the playoffs just a few weeks away, there is still 12 or even 13 teams that can still mathematically make the top 8 so every game from here on out is basically a mini final. The Sabres had a slow start to the season but since their NBL contingent arrived they have been one of the form teams of the league. They currently sit in 6th spot on the ladder but did have a tough loss at Bendigo last week. Their standout player has been Shea Ili who had an outstanding NBL season and has carried that form in to the NBL1 season. He has had plenty of support though from NBL players Dion Prewster and Tohi Smith-Milner and new Aussie Boomer David Okwera. Nick Gabsch has been good all season and former Melbourne United and Boomers star David Barlow is player/coach, along with Rhys Carter, for this talented team. The Hawks have had an interesting few weeks with some Covid issues but with most players available last week, the boys had a great win at Casey. Tim Guers was outstanding and continued his impressive season while Shaun Clarke and Kyle Daggett both worked hard and helped insure a big road win. Matt Roberts, Jack Roberts and Emmett Naar also played well and the Hawks now sit in 9th spot. The Hawks are going to need to be at their best today. The Sabres are looking to secure themselves a play off spot and will be in no mood to mess around. Both teams are coming off a game last night (The Hawks played away at Dandenong and the Sabres hosted Casey) so their may be a few sore bodies out there but that wont stop these two teams going at it 100%. We would like to thank our great sponsors and volunteers for all you do to help put our NBL1 teams on the court. We hope you enjoy the game. PS.. Put this in your calendars please...Next Saturday night we will be honouring the Hawks 2012 Championship winning team. It has been 10 years since that memorable Championship and many of the those Champions will be at the game to receive a special presentation. The Hawks will also be facing the Frankston Blues so it will be a terrific night of entertainment.

Don’t

*Our very own Marena Whittle has had a pretty busy few weeks. After performing well at the Asian Cup 3x3, Whittle was selected in to the 3x3 Commonwealth Games team that starts next week. Keep an eye out for the TV coverage of the 3x3 team and cheer Marena on. *Geelong Supercats Forward Jack White, has signed a 2 way contract with the Denver Nuggets which means he will not be back with Melbourne United (NBL) or Geelong (NBL1) for the foreseeable future. *The Australian Boomers are currently in Indonesia participating in the Asian Cup. Todays opponents. the Sandringham Sabres have 2 players involved with David Okwera representing Australia and also Tohi Smith-Milner who is with the New Zealand Tall Blacks. Both players availability to play today will depend on the teams results in the Cup finals series. *Congratulations to the Ringwood Hawks women who with the win last week at Casey have secured a play off spot. The question now is how high can they finish with the aim being a home final.

It is finals time! Your Hawks have finished the regular season with a 14-8 record and 3rd placing in the Watson pool behind Casey and Kilsyth, missing 2nd on head-to-head. Tonight, we host the Diamond Valley Eagles (12-10), 4th placed in the Terrill pool, in this home elimination final. To finish the regular season, the boys came away with double-header wins against the Bulleen Boomers (92-83) and Waverley Falcons (79-73). We controlled the game at Bulleen all the way, but struggled to pull away, particularly due to some defensive slip ups, turnovers, and poor free throw shooting. At home against the Falcons, we saved it all for the final term. Down by 11 at the end of the third, a 27-10 final period saw us get over the line in spectacular fashion. Outstanding across the weekend were Bayley Rough (23pts, 16rebs, 4asts & 20pts, 11rebs, 3asts), Lachie Ahale (21pts, 9rebs, 3asts & 16pts, 7rebs), Sebastien Lees (10pts, 5rebs, 4asts & 13pts, 15rebs, 6asts, 3stls), and Harry Sealey (15pts & 22pts, 5rebs, 3asts). Massive off the bench against Bullen was Ben Linkin (12pts, 6rebs, 3asts), and against Waverley was Zac Warton (5rebs, 7asts, 3blks).

With the season coming to an end, I take the opportunity to acknowledge the following players in relation to their league stats. Sebastien Lees | 1st in assists (5.86apg) & 3rd in steals (2.23spg) Harry Sealey | 9th in scoring (17.29ppg) Bayley Rough | 5th in rebounding (9.45rpg) & 2nd in offensive rebounding (4.05orpg) Angok Angok | 2nd in blocks (1.55bpg) Ben Linkin | 1st in free throw percentage* (95%) *30 FT attempts or more Diamond Valley finished their regular season with a pair of heartbreaking losses to the Casey Cavaliers (83-82) and Knox Raiders (66-65). AJ Magbegor (14pts, 8rebs & 10pts, 11rebs) was the most consistent player across the weekend, but Ryan Phillippe, Nathan Poelsma, James Avgerinos, and Erik Kafritsas all had their moments. The only time we met the Eagles this year was on their home floor in Round 3 back at the start of April. It was an absolute thriller, but we succumbed by 5-points in the double-overtime affair (98-93). It is do-or-die for both teams and they will give it their all. Get ready for an absolute ripper. The VYCM would like to thank the referees, score bench officials, committee, and supporters for their contributions. Good luck to both teams and enjoy the game.
