HISTORICAL LOGOS
With Matt Hickey still enjoying himself scooting around the UK, its great to be back for some School holiday hoops with tonight’s game and also Friday’s game against Waverley at Norwood. The last home games the Hawks played was a great evening of NBL1 basketball which resulted in two wins for the Club. The Hawks women did all the work early against the Keilor Thunder and ran out 13 point winners while the guys went on a scoring rampage in the final quarter to win by 35. Last Saturday night the Hawks Women had a tough loss at Ballarat while the men caused a minor upset with a 10 point win over the third placed Miners.
Tonight promises to be a lot of fun with the visiting Melbourne Tigers. For those who have been watching the NBL for many years, when you think of the Tigers you think of Gaze, Copeland, Giddey, Bradtke, Simmons, Gordon, Purchase and the names go on and on. It is great to see two of these Legends now Coaching the Tigers NBL1 teams with Andrew Gaze guiding the Men and Wazza Giddey leading the Women. There is no luck of Basketball knowledge between those two gentleman. Don’t forget that we are back here in 2 nights for another huge test for the Hawks with the visiting Waverley Falcons. The Falcons women’s and men’s team are doing very well and both games will be highly entertaining so make sure you get here and bring some friends. It will also be Lucy’s Game, the Hawks will be raising money and awareness for a disease known as DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) which has effected one of the great families of the Club. The players will be wearing a splash of aqua on court as a tribute to Lucy so please spread the word and wear a splash of aqua to the game.
Welcome to Norwood for round 10 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Melbourne Tigers. Melbourne have had an up and down season and sit 17 th on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 9 rounds. They do come into this game in pretty encouraging form though and they will be looking to get another win tonight against the Hawks.
The Tigers are led by stars Tess Heal who is currently averaging 19.66 ppg, 7.33 rpg, 2.88 apg and 1 spg and Nikki Metcalfe who is averaging 10.75 ppg, 3.75 rpg, 1 apg and 1 bpg. The Tigers are a young team and are improving each week under the watchful eye of Tigers Legend Wazza Giddey. The Hawks also come into this game in some pretty solid form except for a hiccup on Saturday night at Ballarat. Over the last month we have had some good results against solid teams. Marena Whittle has been outstanding, averaging 20 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals per game, as has Digna Strautmane who is averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks per game and Marta Hermida who is averaging 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals per game. I also just wanted to encourage you to get to our game on Friday night (at Norwood against the Waverley Falcons)and support Lucy’s game. I’m sure you will see plenty of info about it across our social media this week. Tonight’s game will be a big one, thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy tonight’s action. GO HAWKS!

Welcome to beautiful Norwood College for some midweek, School holiday NBL1 hoops. Tonight we welcome the Melbourne Tigers. It has been an up and down season so far for the Tigers who have been very competitive in most games but have a record of just 2 wins from their 11 games so far. They have some good performances though with Young Mason Gaze stepping up and becoming a constant threat along with veteran big Simon Bradbury and Michael Wearne. Dogukan Elyazar is an explosive offensive player and Taj Chehhal has been a reliable contributor so far. The Tigers are of course Coached by the NBL’s newest Legend, Andrew Gaze. Speaking of being up and down, the Hawks fit in to this category as well. Saturday night at Ballarat was exceptional though with a great 10 point on the road. Looking back on the season so far, the boys have had some good wins but also a few performances that are better forgotten. The addition of Emmett Naar has been fantastic on and off the court for the team and has really helped the chemistry to build. Tim Guers, Kyle Daggett and Shaun Clarke have all been exceptional and have managed to keep the Hawks in the hunt for a finals spot but there is plenty of work to do. The impact of the bench is all important with Matt Roberts, Jack Roberts, Matt Snow and Trevor Latham all playing major roles in Hawks wins during the season. The Hawks will be well aware of the Tigers ability to score the ball with Gazey running some shuffle offence which is always creating scoring opportunities. If the Hawks are not switched on, the Tigers are more than capable of scoring big numbers and that will put added pressure on the Hawks who have been solid defensively for most of the year. Don’t forget that tonight is just the first game at Norwood this week as we will be back to face another quality team on Friday. The Hawks will be facing the Waverley Falcons but that can wait as the Tigers are all that matters tonight. Thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers and supporters. The coaches and players are very grateful for your support and we hope you enjoy the game.

*Gazey’s a Legend? “Turn it up” a massive congratulations to the Melbourne Tigers Men’s Head Coach and Aussie Basketball Royalty Andrew Gaze who has “officially” been elevated to a Legend in the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. Let’s be honest. It was just a matter of time. Congrats Drewey!!! The great man is just 1 of 6 people who are Legends., including Lindsay Gaze. *What about 41 year old Lauren Jackson being selected in the Opals training squad last week. Lauren has been playing for Albury Wodonga in the NBL1 East division and has some big games which has prompted the recall to the National squad. It makes we wonder if Hawks Assistant Coach Willie Weimer has been contemplating a comeback…..Has looked good in domestic games apparently. *Did you know that the NBL1 mental health round raised $52,000.00. A great result and hats off to Alison Cody and the team at NBL1. *Please make sure you grab your family and friends and head back to Norwood Stadium this Friday night for a massive NBL1 match up with the Hawks facing the Waverley Falcons. Apart from 2 incredible games the Club will be raising money and awareness for a hideous disease called DIPG that has impacted one of our own. Hopefully you have seen some social media posts about it over the last few days so the games will be known as Lucy’s Games. The Hawks players will be wearing splashed of aqua tonight which was Lucy’s favourite colour. You can check out more info at rundipg.org. You are also encouraged to wear a splash of Aqua to the game.
*Don’t forget for anyone wearing a Norwood Secondary College top (any top) will get in free to this Fridays game. Spread the word.
