The earthquake

The Earthquake Sazza T.D.

Page 1 Wednesday 25th, January 2053 East IndoAustralian Tectonic Plate border, Oil Rig 4:37 am The sky had been engulfed in darkness. The overseer of the rig stood at the edge and listened to the sound of the waves as an engineer ran to his side. “Sir, There’s a problem with the drill.” “Well, what is it? Speak up.” He urged. “It’s getting too close to the tectonic plate. It could cause an earthquake.” “Well then stop the dr…” A humungous noise erupted from the centre of the structure interrupting his sentence. The entire platform broke off into many pieces that collapsed into the water below. Seconds later, the rig burst into flames as it slowly crumbled to the sea floor. A low rumble could be heard coming from the bottom of the ocean… Wednesday 25th, January 2053 Australia, Queensland, The floating city of Santaris 7:18 am It was a new day and knowing I had finally completed my new invention, the Hawkeye Glasses™, I got out of bed with a smile. I slipped on my school uniform, grabbed the glasses and headed downstairs. I then picked up my bag and barged straight through the door into the morning air. I might not have dressed differently from other thirteen year olds, but what set me aside from the others was my exceptional IQ.

“Local news please,” I asked. It pulled up the latest news which stated that an oil rig had collapsed on the east indo – Australian tectonic plate and this shocked me. I took off the glasses, and as I arrived at the school, I was knocked to the ground by a tremor and my head hit the ground with a THUD. Everything went black.

While walking to school I put on my new glasses to see if they worked properly. The frame contained an Intel i7 Quad Core processor and state of the art voice recognition. It worked just like a wearable laptop.

I awoke to the sound of someone saying my name. “Yashimo! Wake up! We got to go!” My vision focused and I saw my friend Julius standing there with his girlfriend, Jenifer by his side.

Page 3 “Come on get up! The place is collapsing!” Jenifer screamed. I got up with a sudden jolt of energy and as I looked around, I saw that we didn’t have many options. The ground around us was collapsing, and running for the bridge that connected to the mainland would be suicide. I suddenly had an idea. I quickly reached for my glasses, put them on and said, “Send a distress signal to any nearby helicopters.” I heard a soft beep and saw the words Signal Sent. It was only a matter of time now, and luckily we received a transmission back. “Hello, this is Airforce helicopter 137 reporting, is anyone there?” A woman replied. “Yes, yes, we are stuck at the entrance to the Santaris State High School. Please come and pick us up!” “We’re on our way, stay put.” I nodded to my friends, all we had to do was wait. Horrific minutes passed as we waited for the helicopter to arrive and finally, it did. It stopped descending around fifteen metres from the ground, and I noticed it wasn’t able to descend any further since some of the pillars of the school where still standing. But in the wreckage of the school, I saw the forklift hybrid that was being used to repair the roof. I gathered my two friends and got them onto the forks, but when I got to the controls, I had no idea how to use it.

Page 4 I told my glasses to hack into the main controls and seconds later the engine roared to life. As my friends started to ascend to the helicopter, they screamed out my name, but it was no use. There was no way I would make it out with them. All I wanted to do was rest…
