A record number of small businesses across Australia were shut-down by snap lockdowns this month and last. With Sydney’s prolonged lockdown highlighting the ongoing struggle to contain COVID-19 outbreaks, we reflect on the physiological affects lockdowns have on small business owners, managers and employees.

The slow vaccine roll-out has created an environment of uncertainty, and businesses like the Alex Theatre in Melbourne are tired of having to reinvent themselves and struggle with cash-flow due to lockdowns.

M

elbourne’s fourth lockdown has bruised the confidence of Alex Theatre in St Kilda. The seven-day snap-lockdown, coupled with multiplying Covid-19 cases and exposure sites, is a major setback for small businesses that rely on live shows and performances for income.

Allan Rendell, Alex Theatre’s general manager says “this lockdown is having a greater psychological impact than the others”.

Alex Theatre’s current lockdown plan to reduce costs mirrors a typical small business strategy; increase debt, reduce overhead and let go of staff. “Though after thirteen months our options are limited,” says Rendell.

He understands the Victorian government is doing its best to manage Covid-19 outbreaks, but Rendell says “there [also] seems to be a lack of accountability”.

“There is no strategy we can put in place to mitigate the risk of operating a business in Melbourne at the moment with the constant fear of COVID lockdowns.”

The government’s $250 million support package granting small businesses made in operational by the lockdown $2,500 for their losses is welcomed, says Rendell, but it’s simply not enough.

“In reality, our losses are approximately $15,000 a week”.

The theatre has already cancelled four upcoming shows and restarted the painstaking refund and rebooking process.

After thirteen months, Alex Theatre had just managed to refund nearly every ticket from shows cancelled due to the three previous lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.

“May came upon us it was a relief to be able to start to generate an income once again through events, and then just as our corporate clients returned we closed the doors at the end of our first major event,” says Rendell.

Rendell says this lockdown will be particularly tough without the support of JobKeeper and growing fears of once again restarting from scratch.

“Through Jobkeeper we tried to retain our full-time and casual workforce but after twelve months we found most had moved interstate or lost motivation for our industry,” says Rendell.

In early 2021, Alex Theatre has just begun rebuilding its team, spending additional resources and time on recruiting and training new staff.

But with this new lockdown has shattered the business’s confidence about once again devising a reopening strategy. “We can no longer [use] our old model with the fear of an extended or additional lockdown in the future,” says Rendell.

He says lockdown number four is deluding the blind hope that in a better tomorrow a small business needs to operate even at the best of times.

After nearly a year of reinventing and pivoting their business model, making advancements in digitalising their products and services, the physiological and financial toll is draining.

Post-lockdown, “we will need to reinvent what we do while still operating within our business’s purpose, if we are to remain in business at all,” says Rendell.

While other small businesses are waiting anxiously, anticipating more government support, Alex Theatre isn’t holding its breath.

After thirteen months of applying to numerous government assistance programs and grants and receiving very little, Rendell acknowledges how “it’s highly unlikely we will receive any government support for being a theatre”.

He says the grants Alex Theatre is eligible for tend to favour larger entertainment companies or more niche art projects.

“We are assigned to not being the cool kids of the art world and normally that is okay, as we believe in working for a living.”

“But when you apply for assistance to restart a local economy, after all, that is what a theatre can do, and no one seems to [make that] connection to your business’s value…One starts to question; is the problem with us or the system we are communicating through?”

Should small businesses accept digital currency as payment?

In a single year, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated small business digitalisation and the evolution of the cashless economy. But as the world considers embracing digital currencies for a multitude of payment, trading and banking options, small business has been largely left out of the conversation.

SBC Media sat down with Andrew Barker, Chief Marketing Officer of Qoin, a digital currency designed specifically for small business. Barker answers how small businesses can engage with the emerging digital currency market, and if it’s a beneficial payment avenue for them, how they can integrate digital currencies into their business model.

How can digital currencies help reduce transaction fees for small businesses?

With the absence of third-party intervention, digital currencies provide small businesses with a value proposition that means fewer fees.

Digital currencies often have charges of less than one per cent, and in fact, Qoin has zero fees, placing it well ahead of credit cards, which invariably charge between two-four per cent per transactions. In short, fewer transaction fees means more profit for the business owner.

What advice would you give SMBs that are nervous about receiving digital currency?

I would say, it is absolutely fair enough to be nervous about adopting any new idea or payment method into your business. There are two keys in my opinion as to assessing “new idea risk”.

Firstly, do the research on all fronts. More importantly, review the actual merchants that are using the system and what the pro’s and con’s from their perspective are. Secondly, slow integration is always better than the “all in” method.

Take a small percentage of your current turnover in an alternative currency, and then, if the outcomes work, increase the amount you can take. A quick final note on this is cost vs. outcome. With Qoin, there is zero cost to become a merchant and zero transaction costs, therefore, making Qoin a viable option to trial in your business.

How would a small business go about becoming a Qoin merchant?

Provided a small business has an active ABN and is prepared to accept Qoin for goods and services, businesses can simply download the Qoin app from the Apple or Google stores. Follow the steps to register the small business as a merchant within the Qoin ecosystem, and then be prepared to take on additional customers who will be paying with Qoin.

What is the ideal per cent of sales a small business should receive in digital currency?

It’s all about “managing” any business tool, so there are a number of factors to consider.

How do you see digital currency and small business interacting within the next 10 years?

Research has suggested that in the space of ten years, cash has gone from being the most popular form of payment to only being used for about 25% of all transactions, a telling progression.

Why this Melbourne roaster wants his customers to sip-easy on ethically sourced coffee Do you know if your morning flat white is made from ethically sourced coffee beans? It’s a simple question that Mohamed Mumin, founder of Melbourne-based boutique coffee roaster Astur Coffee, wanted all his customers to sip-easy-on.

SBC Media sat down with coffee roaster and coffee cart owner, Mumin, to discover how growing up in the Horn of Africa, the birthplace of coffee, influenced building his business. He felt strongly early on about creating a coffee brand that respected farmers in developing countries while delivering high-quality coffee to his Aussie customers.

Mumin told SBC Media how he’s found sourcing ethically grown and traded products even easier and more fulfilling than he ever hoped. He’s now encouraging more small businesses, and customers, to be informed about Fair Trade products and says the additional costs of importing and selling are minimal when considering the difference, it makes.

How did growing up in Somalia motivate you to partner with ethically sourced coffee producers?

I moved to Australia when in 2000 with my family, but growing up in Somalia, I know first-hand the issues and challenges people go through in Africa.

In particular, farmers, who spend approximately three to five years growing and harvesting the coffee we drink every day are often underpaid by importers who take advantage of their vulnerability and desperation.

In most cases, what’s paid by importers is no way near enough to live on nor is it a fair reflection of the effort and hard work they put into producing the coffee you and I drink every day.

Early on in my coffee journey, I knew that this was not right and that I would not support or buy coffee from companies that exploit vulnerable farmers.

Why is it important for Aussie small businesses to support overseas small farmers or producers?

In the past, very few people questioned where their coffee came from. But these days, as a global community, we are much more aware of how our actions affect other people, including businesses overseas and the people who operate those businesses.

You can see this trend as many coffee beans are now certified ‘Fair Trade’ or ‘Rainforest Alliance’ so drinkers can ensure that farmers, wildlife, and the environment are looked after.

This trend is positive as it means small businesses, say like my own in Australia, can support small coffee farmers in Kenya or Guatemala. This system benefits us both as businesses and satisfies customers who also want to partake in international trade that benefits the global community.

What would you say to SMBs that are unsure about switching to Fair Trade products?

The challenge for any business looking to sell ethically sourced coffee or any other product is to understand how to best deliver or communicate with your customers. Because if you can manage to do this effectively, majority of customers will be in favour. And as a result, your business will have more of a meaning than just to make a profit.

What’s the first step businesses should take when sourcing ethically?

We simply start by having an honest and open conversation with all the suppliers we engage with on how and where their coffee is sourced. Generally, suppliers are happy to share this information and provide proof of any relevant certifications.

Why do you think the benefits outweigh the costs when it comes to your business using Fair Trade products?

It’s true, ethically sourced coffee is generally more expensive to import and sell. However, the benefits from both a business perspective and a customer’s point of view should definitely out ways any additional cost.

Buying Fair Trade coffee doesn’t only mean coffee is purchased from farmers at fair prices, but FairTrade organisations engage with initiatives that improve the quality of life of coffee farmers and their communities, such as building water wells, funding schools and teaching environmental farming

SMB Media sat down with the ACSC’s Director of SMEs, Craig Gillies, to understand current cybercrime trends targeting small business and see why small businesses are particularly vulnerable.

What are the biggest misconceptions small business owners having when it comes to cybercrime?

It’s not only big business under threat – small businesses are also big targets for cybercriminals.

Small businesses can be especially vulnerable to cybercrime as they often have limited resources and expertise compared to larger businesses and are not always aware of the latest cybersecurity advice.

Many cybercriminals view small businesses as softer targets compared to larger organisations and small business owners need to be alert and prepared.

Business owners might also have a false sense of security if their IT systems are managed by external professionals. Cybersecurity is not ‘set and forget’, it requires active management by all business owners, big and small.

SMBs are the target of 43% of all cybercrime in Australia - what makes them vulnerable compared to larger businesses?

Small businesses often lack dedicated cybersecurity resources and expertise and are primarily focused on their normal business operations. This makes them especially vulnerable to highly adaptable and cunning cybercriminals who look to exploit vulnerable SMBs. For example, this means that SMBs might be more likely to click on a malicious link in a fraudulent ‘phishing’ email or they might be more susceptible to fake IT ‘remote access’ scams.

To increase cybersecurity prowess, I’d suggest small businesses join the ACSC Partnership Program which draws on collective understanding, experience, skills and capability to lift cyber resilience across the Australian economy.

Is cybercrime an ‘opportunistic crime’ when it comes to small business?

Almost always. Businesses hat are alert to cybersecurity threats and implement good mitigations are less likely to fall victim to cybercrime than businesses that don’t. At the end of the day, cybercriminals’ resources and time is also limited, so don’t be the easy target.

How can SMBs ensure cyber-safe workplaces with remote working?

Be proactive with your cybersecurity and encourage all staff to do the same, particularly if they are working remotely. This includes ensuring that staff working from home are also keeping their personal devices and accounts secure. What are the real costs to small businesses that don’t take cybercrime seriously?

Businesses that don’t take cybersecurity seriously risk extended business downtimes, loss of customers’ trust, and could even face legal penalties if sensitive customer data is compromised or stolen.

Cyber incidents can cause serious financial, organisational and reputational costs for small businesses and some victims may never recover.

Business IT systems, such as those containing sensitive financial and customer data, or those responsible for driving normal operations, can be disrupted, degraded or held to ransom. Cyber incidents can also cause irreparable damage to businesses’ reputations, especially if highly sensitive data, such as from customers and clients, is stolen and leaked online by cybercriminals.

87% of SMBs believe they’re safe from cyberattacks if they just use antivirus software. Why is this notation incorrect?

There is no single defence from cyber-attacks and a multi-layered approach to cybersecurity is essential.

Antivirus software can reduce the chance of devices being compromised but this won’t help protect your email account from being hacked if you use a poor passphrase or don’t implement other security measures like multi-factor authentication.

Small businesses should implement a range of relatively simple cybersecurity mitigations to help protect the various devices, accounts and networks they rely on. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) provides the latest up to date advice, including step-by-step guides.
