WINTER/SPRING 2010

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Winter/Spring 2009 Dear Residents: Parks are for walking, talking, riding, jogging, football, baseball, basketball and a million other things. Above all, parks are for people. As much as we all enjoy the open space and freedom our parks provide, rules do exist. Here are some of the basic rules, which allow everyone to have a safe, healthy and enjoyable time in our parks. • Parks close at sunset. • No alcohol or controlled substances in the park. • Dogs and other pets must be leashed (except within the confines of the Dog Park at Odlum). • Please pick up after your dog or pet and dispose of waste properly. • Please do not feed the ducks or geese. • Organized groups need a permit use Park District facilities, parks and fields. • If you see something suspicious, call the Roselle Police Department, who act as the park police. Do keep your fingers crossed for nice freezing weather on consecutive days this winter! The Roselle Park District hopes to bring ice skating back to Turner Pond! Nothing makes longtime residents grow more nostalgic than asking them about the fun times had “back in the day” skating on Turner Pond. Plans are underway to turn our favorite fishing spot into a place for figure 8’s and double salchows... just as long as Mother Nature cooperates! Keep your New Year’s resolution by trying out a new fitness class or explore the equipment options in our newly renovated Fitness Center. Daddy Daughter Date Night is the next biggie on our social whirl coming in February. Last year’s event was sold out, so please make your reservations early. Spring Family Fun Fest returns to Turner Park in May, with vendors, food, fun and FREE activities. As a reminder, Club Kids before and after school programs are conveniently offered at two local public school locations: Waterbury and Spring Hill. The School Day Out trips are included as part of fun for the attendees and their friends can sign up to go along. too! Whatever you choose, we hope to see you enjoying the Roselle Park District! The Roselle Park District staff would like to thank our volunteer soccer coaches for their time and efforts this past fall season. Their names: Jerry Krokos, David Zielinski, Andres Basso, Andrea Newmes, Scott Boesen, Jon Oleksyk, Larry Ruth, and Charlie Matson.

Volunteer Coaches Needed! Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredient in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and effort, we would not be able to offer these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participation, teamwork, character, and sportsmanship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victories.” If you are a “first timer,” coach’s clinics will be held for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Please call Vic Orlandino at 630-894-4200 for details.

Spring Youth Soccer League (VO) Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start April 17th. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon securing enough volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. The number of teams competing this spring out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league officials on March 16th for scheduling purposes. Registering before or after this date does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum and maximum numbers needed to form a team. It is imperative to register early! Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Volunteer coaches are always needed for this program. Please indicate on registration form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will make note of this in our computer registration software. Falls? They Don’t Have to Happen To You (TL) Falls are the leading cause of injury death for Americans age 65 and older, and this year one in three people over that age will fall. Even those who are not injured may then develop a fear of falling which may cause them to limit their activities, reducing mobility and physical fitness, increasing the actual risk of falling. Learn the risk factors, causes and consequences of a fall; simple things you can do around the home and when out and about to reduce your risk of falling; what to do if you do fall; and what steps you can take to improve your balance. W.O.W. Women on Weights (TL) Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and we’ve discovered that the benefits of strength training extend far beyond the visual. Goose Lake Park Disc- Golf Course The concept of the game is easier to understand when the term ‘Frisbee® golf’ is used, but since Frisbee is a registered trademark, we call the game disc golf instead. The game is similar to traditional ball golf. Players use special Frisbees (golf discs) instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, ‘par’ or better, i.e., in the fewest number of throws. The combination of challenges to players, including distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery, water and terrain changes, offer plenty of action and excitement during the course of a game. The Professional Disc Golf Association website is http://www.pdga.com.

Disc Golf Course: Open May 1st – October 15th 10:00 am- Sunset For more information on the rules of the game please feel free to stop by the CRC for a copy of the rules.

ICE SKATING AT TURNER PARK/WALKING TRACK The Roselle Park District is now recycling

NEW ! Ice Skating at Turner Pond WELCOME BACK AND ENJOY! The Roselle Park District is happy to offer ice skating at Turner Park! Turner Pond will be available for ice skating as soon as weather conditions permit. During the winter, the parks department will regularly test the depth of the ice. They will also clean off the south section of the pond which will be designated for ice skating. (As a reminder, snow removal from the paths and parking lots is the District’s first priority during storm clean up, followed by ice skating at Turner Pond.) Skating on Turner Pond is allowed only when a GREEN FLAG is flying at the pond. If there is NO FLAG or a RED FLAG, NO SKATING is permitted. Hours for Ice Skating at Turner Pond (weather permitting) Monday-Friday 10 am - dusk Saturday and Sunday 10 am - dusk Call the seasonal weather hot line at (630) 671-9261 for current skating conditions. There is no charge to skate at Turner Pond. Please note that there are no warming facilities or lights at Turner for skating. We will have a porta-potty available on site. There is no attendant on duty. Skaters must provide their own ice skates.

We all play a part in recycling to really make an impact. According to the recent survey, 99% of respondents are willing, able and ready to recycle in the parks and teach their kids to do the same. Recycle similar materials at the facilities as you do at home. Below is breakdown of what you can recycle In any of our blue containers. • Newspaper (and all inserts) • Magazines, Catalogs, Phone Books • Junk Mail (construction paper, colored paper, etc) • Office Paper (letter, letterhead, fax paper) • Chipboard (cereal boxes, tissue boxes, paper towel & toilet paper rolls, etc)

Turner Park Splash Pad Open May through September. Take advantage of this great new feature at Turner Park. It consists of a

Before you head out to skate: (see additional rules on site) • Check for the GREEN FLAG that indicates the parks department staff has checked the ice thickness • Never skate on the pond by yourself • Report unsafe or dangerous conditions to the Park District (630) 894-2121 • Do not skate at night • No ice fishing is allowed • Sleds are prohibited on the pond • Be courteous to other skaters • HAVE FUN! Because ice skating may result in injury, and because the Park District’s skating area is unsupervised, guests who skate at Turner Pond skate at their own risk and assume full responsibility. The Park District urges skaters to exercise caution and obey all posted signs. We encourage everyone to participate in these activities in a safe manner and suggest that children be supervised by a responsible adult.

splash playground and two playgrounds, designed for children of all ages.

Walking Track Did you know that it is free to use our walking track? All you have to do is sign in each time at the front desk. One mile is equivalent to 14 times around the track. Roselle is the one of very few park districts that doesn’t charge to walk the track.

Program Room and Area Locations Program locations are subject to change. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

Registration will continue until classes are filled or cancelled due to low enrollment (at the discretion of the corresponding Recreation Supervisor).

Include Payment & Sign Waiver/Release Please note that you need to include full payment and a signed waiver and release for your form to be processed. Credit card payments require an additional signature to authorize payment. For these reasons, we are unable to accept phone-in registrations.

In Accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. Also, there can be no acceptance of any overage payments with transactions. The District can only receive a total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders.

In Case of an Oops! Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Nothing ruins a good program quicker… than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Residency

Non Resident Fees

Wait List Process

Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have first priority in the registration process each program period.

Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $15 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, CRC or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for nonresidents in addition to the stated resident fees.

A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out or transfers or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required..

Returned Check Policy We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If, for any reason, a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

Roselle Park District and the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

What about insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The park district, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.

Refund Policy The Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities. However, sometimes expectation levels or situations occur that do not meet the satisfaction of our customers and a refund request is made. All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the first class meeting or practice of program. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fill the spot. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the first class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Refund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received.

If for any reason you are requesting a refund, please contact the Park District at (630) 894-4200 or come by in person to submit a request.

Refunds with facility rental fees: • Cancellation request 30 or more calendar days prior to rental date = FULL REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 15-29 calendar days prior to rental date = 50% REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 5-14 calendar days prior to rental date = 25% REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 4 or less calendar days prior to rental date = NO REFUND. • Refund request due to inclement weather with outdoor facilities = no refund. • Other types refund inquiries = at the discretion of Facility Supervisor.

The Park District will not issue refunds for fitness center memberships or LPHS student CRC parking permits. Some classes, programs, and fees have specific refund policies that will be adhered to. The Park District reserves the right to judge refund requests on a case-by-case basis and partial or full refunds may or may not be approved at any time at the discretion of the district.
