From the time they take their first few steps and “toddle”, they are labeled as “toddlers”. This usually happens around age one till three years. To some parents, this can be their baby’s “cutest” stage after infancy and just before childhood when they begin to express themselves and put on the most adorable of antics. To others, this is more appropriately called the “terrible twos”, when they start to see themselves as separate from their parents and test the boundaries of that selfawareness and individualism. Whatever the case may be, this is an amazingly wonderful time full of milestones so it is worthy of dedicating at least one issue of Kidz Magazine to. Whatever happens to a toddler, whatever skill or stage that is mastered is so meaningful, it leads to the beginning of a new stage. Any parent of a toddler should know that toddlerhood is a magnificent time for discoveries. So many amazing “firsts” happen at this time and they just won’t run out of new delights. This is the stage when baby is on-the-move and ventures away from the safety of mum and dad’s arms to explore a bigger world. From babbling to cooing, this is also when they begin to string together their first few words. Everything is an adventure for them and they become funny in unexpected ways. Every instant with our children is to be treasured and it will not come around again. And so we recollect some of those magical toddler moments in We Say, They Say. Fellow parents also help parentreaders survive these “trying” times in Parenting 101 and In Focus. Some former and current ‘stars’ that began their showbiz careers at a toddler age are featured in Celebrity Corner.Have a good read and appreciate everything about toddlers that can make any parent smile.

As they grow into their own little persons and discover the world, we only realise how amazing they are and how blest we are to be parents. Postscript Our prayers, thoughts, tears and hearts go out to the family of Farisha Edreena Mohd Razwan, whose untimely passing last October, just less than one month short of her 17th birthday, had left all of us here at Kidz and Superkidz in bereavement. Farisha was Kidz’ chosen beneficiary in Wish Upon Kidz December 2005 and January 2006 issues when we got her to meet and be serenaded by Datuk Siti Nurhaliza. It was Farisha’s only wish to encounter her idol singer, after a lifelong battle with an inborn hole-inthe-heart condition that had permanently left her lungs damaged and which required a heart and lung transplant. We believe that our collective prayers have brought her to eternal bliss and that her loved ones have been consoled by the outpour of sympathy and compassion from all over. We also extend our deepest apologies to readers and visitors of www.kidzmag.com.my which was the recent victim of hacking which resulted in the insertion of inappropriate content in our website. If you had seen or read the rude photo and caption therein, we sincerely apologise for this uncouth incursion and the momentary disruption of our website. Books Galore!

Hello, I just received an email from an expatriate couple who read the article about the My Beautiful Myanmar book in your magazine (Wish Upon Kidz section, Jan-Feb 2009 issue)! They're school teachers. They were so moved that they want to offer their help! Wow, thanks so much for being a blessing to the kids. Belle, a volunteer teacher to Myanmar children/ asylum seekers in Malaysia

During Chinese New Year, we visited many relatives and saw many friends at their house parties. Seeing them all has reinforced our familial bonds and friendship. At such times, it is important to know how blessed and lucky we are and to remember to help the less fortunate among us.

Title: Rich Brother, Rich Sister Genre: Self fulfilment Author: Robert Kiyosaki Price: RM96.90 Available: January 2009 In 1962, the United States detonated a nuclear bomb ten miles off the coast of Christmas Island in the South Pacific. From that moment, two people, born of the same parents, and with the same childhood experiences, found themselves on different life journeys to find truth, happiness, purpose, and ultimately financial success. Robert became a worldfamous entrepreneur, author, and teacher of all things financial; and Emi, a highly devout Buddhist nun, author, and teacher of all things spiritual. Two lives that weave together, then apart, then together again, as two siblings discover

18 writers present a sweeping literary portrait of the city as seen through their eyes, and in ways unexpected and mesmerising, take on the challenge of capturing the exuberant madness and cultural diversity of the city and its enduring spirit - its constantly changing public spectacle, gossip, amusements, hardluck stories and tragedies.

I used to think that the secret to a good marriage is to always appear cheerful. So at times when I’m not happy, I’d just keep it bottled inside. But recently I got quite upset and blurted out things to my husband. After that, I realised that it’s much better to communicate with your partner, even if it’d lead to arguments. Now our marriage is healthier because we understand each other better. I read the article about the Myanmar children and I was very moved (Wish Upon Kidz section, Jan-Feb 2009 issue). I also bought the My Beautiful Myanmar book and was very sad to read the children’s stories. I think I’ll buy more and give to my friends, so they can understand how lucky we are to live in peaceful Malaysia. Madam Wong, godmother to two boys

Set against the landscape of Malaysia’s capital, the city of Kuala Lumpur is as much a character as any of the denizens, drifters and

dreamers portrayed in the stories. These are portraits of the capital seen through the prism of stories written by an array of new literary voices. Each writer’s experience of or passage through the city is unique; at some point in their lives, they have grown up in, stopped over in, moved into, or, lost and found themselves in the labyrinthine chaos of the city.

The other day, I saw a mother carrying her baby while smoking. What was more shocking was that her friend was doing the same thing (with her older child)! Second-hand smoke is harmful enough to grownups; can you imagine the damage these two irresponsible (or should I say ignorant) mothers are doing to their children? Anonymous

I think the article on adoption was quite informative (pointblank) section, Jan-Feb 2009 issue). It listed out a lot of info and compiled lots of details that are quite useful to know. Although I’m not interested in adopting, I know of friends who want to do so. Therefore, I think it will be helpful to a lot of other readers. Mdm Tan, KL

Title: Do You Wear Suspenders? Genre: English grammar/ humour Author: Lydia Teh Price: RM32.90 Available: March 2009 Eh Poh Nim, a punctilious wordsmith, enlightens readers on idioms, hyperboles, metaphors and other figures of speech with delightful humour and an insight into Malaysian life and its complexities and peculiarities. Do You Wear Suspenders? is a collection of anecdotes about the everyday life of this chatty woman who launches into explanations of words and phrases at a drop of a hat.

Anyone with even a passing interest in the English language will find this book appealing and amusing. Phrases like “bake a tit”, “Mrs. Malaprop’s nipples”, “pie in the sky”, “bananas and fruitcakes” and “satay mushrooms” may sound deliciously naughty or vulgar, but none of them are what they seem. The Kidz -Friendly Stamp of Approval – EC Swim

Each new student will be assessed to check their water confidence and swimming ability. This is to ensure that they are ready to learn and so that they are placed in the right learning level. Each level will consist of a minimum eight to maximum 36 lessons, depending on the student’s requirements. Beginners or novice learners will start at the EC Swim Foundation level where they are taught water movements so they feel safe and confident in the water. Before moving onto the next level, they will be tested to ascertain that they have mastered the necessary skills. While lessons are fun, these are structured and each student’s progress is noted. Hearing such good things about EC Swim, Kidz was evidently eager to review it. This time around, joining the Kidz review team are Superkidz Club members Dania Yasmine Hasbullah (4) and mum Ezna Ahmad Khalili, as well as Santhakumar (10) and Santhini (10) with mum Mrs Kalai Chelvan.

clothes. Being right next to the pool, it has spacious cubicles for changing, showering and for washrooms. There is also a spacious indoor waiting area for parents, but most prefer to sit by the pool and watch their kids. First in the water was Dania. Initially shy, she tried to cling to her mum when lowered into the pool. But the ‘allure’ of the water was too much; so with a little coaxing from Bernard, she started her lesson with a splash! He got Dania to ‘walk’ in the pool while stepping on a ledge to ease her anxiety and to ascertain her water confidence. Since she is quite young, Bernard turned the lesson into a series of fun games. The objective was to teach her how to breathe underwater. So they played games like fetching hoops tossed into the water. Once in awhile, Bernard would ask her to put her finger underneath her nose and breathe out. Poor Dania got confused and kept breathing in instead! She also kept trying to grab the hoops while straining to keep her head above water. Throughout the lesson though, Bernard was very patient and kept coming up with new ways to get her to do it right. When she got frustrated, he would ask her to walk around the pool again and repeat his instructions once more.

Everybody loves to play in the water. At EC Swim, children get to learn how to swim in a fun and safe environment. Situated in PJ and established two years ago, the swimming centre runs classes for those aged four years old and above. Its founder, Bernard Yong, is a skilled instructor with coaching and sports science qualifications. Together with another instructor, Abu Bakar Sidek, they have about 400 students at EC Swim. Safety of the children is a priority at EC Swim, both in the pool and on the premise, so the centre has a security guard. Kids are divided according to different age groups so that different learning needs can be attended to. Classes take 45 minutes, and with a maximum of five students per class, instructors are able to pay more attention to each child. The centre also offers lessons for adults, so parents can join in on the fun as well. There are also one-to-one lesson packages for those who would prefer to learn alone.

As Santhini and Santhakumar have had lessons before elsewhere, Abu Bakar asked them to do several short laps in different stroke styles. As their freestyle was a little ‘rusty’, he gave them a refresher course. Each was asked to swim by themselves and he would give comments and correct them. Once Abu Bakar was sure that they had understood it well enough, the lesson turned into a game session. Pebbles were thrown in and whoever could grab the most from the bottom of the pool would win. Santhini and Santhakumar were scrambling to see who could get the most and both were having a great time. Abu Bakar even tried to make it more challenging by preventing them from reaching the pebbles. It was a great way to end the lesson for the day! After changing into some dry clothes, all three children were quite exhausted from their lessons but nonetheless elated. The parents were quite pleased with the teaching techniques of the instructors. They found the staff of EC Swim to be friendly, courteous and ever-obliging – trademarks of a customer-oriented business! Ezra commented that Dania has broken out of her shyness and had enjoyed the lesson tremendously. She was impressed by how patient, approachable and friendly Bernard is. As for the two teenagers, they were simply happy because they had fun! All agreed that it is a good starting point for young children to learn swimming. In a nutshell, for more personalised lessons in a relaxed and friendly setting, EC Swim is the place to go. For that, the centre is worthy of the Kidz-Friendly Stamp of Approval!

Situated in a residential area, EC Swim can be quite easy to find, or not! As the centre was situated along a main road, Ezna suggested that a good idea would be to place another signboard before the entrance, so that families have sufficient time to slow down. Mrs. Kalai who was not familiar with the PJ area got a little lost on the way. But EC Swim was quick to assist. Giving her clear instructions over the phone, they were able to steer Mrs. Kalai in the right direction without her getting any more lost. Due to their efficiency and helpfulness, the family was able to arrive on time and smiling! After the preliminary introductions, the office manager Ms. Ng chatted with the parents to get to know the families better. After finding out about the children’s swimming experience, all three kids were ushered into the changing area for a quick change of 10

Belai Si Comel Bersama Friskies, the show airs from 21st March to 9th May, every Saturday at 12.30pm on TV3. Its aim is to find passionate cat lovers who have the desire and willingness to adopt a cat from the SPCA. Having identified these individuals at an on-site audition, camera crew will go to their houses for the second stage to see how well they can relate to their new pets, and how capable they are in providing a good home for the cat. Winners of the programme will walk away with pet care products as well as cash prizes. So if you’re thinking about adopting from SPCA but unsure if you could properly take care of animals, watch this show to see how others handle this.

Those

Precious Memories

Our youngest son was two and a half years old when we first brought him to the beach for a holiday. We had just awoken at the resort when we took him for a stroll along the beach shore while he was still in his pajamas. He was probably still half asleep but when he caught sight of the vast ocean and the rolling waves lapping up against the shore, he couldn’t resist but to jump right into the water! Yes, he was still in his pajamas and he was chuckling nonsensically and rolling on the sand in total abandon! I can’t find the words to describe how happy we were to see our boy so happy! - Jessica Teoh, Ampang

of our Toddlers

The moment may be brief but magical enough to last a lifetime. It is that defining instant when, in a flash, you are overwhelmed by the joy of being a parent and you just can’t stop being thankful for the blessing of your child. It is that life-changing second when you know that you must’ve done something right for having been blest with the gift of children. Every parent would know what I’m talking about. For many, this takes place when your child is at toddler age. For it is at this stage when their developmental “firsts” take place. This is the time when parents are most camera-happy, just clicking away to take photos and rolling the video cams to capture and immortalise all of baby’s first everything! From their first baby tooth, to their first baby haircut, first solid meal, first night to sleep alone in their toddler bed, first word, first song, even to their first diaper-less pee and toilet-trained poop, every milestone is celebrated. Parents recall, or share, their children’s great strides in physical, emotional and mental development. What’s your toddler’s most memorable delight and discovery? These are great stories of tender moments with toddlers. I wish all our readers the kind of happiness that is shared here. – Ed.

It may not be a milestone; it may simply be an unexpected and spontaneous moment when, out of the blue, your child makes you feel so loved! I had one such moment with my two-yearold daughter when, without warning, she just grabbed both my cheeks with her chubby little paws and kissed me on the lips! I never felt greater happiness! - Patrick Liew, Mont Kiara

As adults, we can ask our parents what their fondest memory of us as children are and they would most likely recollect the time when we were toddlers. That’s probably because even we, monster grownups now, were once upon a time cute back then. What toddler isn’t? What’s your unforgettable moment with your toddler?

We Say, They Say

My boy’s first day at play school. That was a great memory. He was looking so smart and academic in his school uniform, backpack and lunch bag. We dropped him off and gave him the longest, tightest hug goodbye and his eyes were swelling with tears but he tried his best to keep them from rolling down. As we drove the car away until we could no longer catch sight of him, he just stood at the school door, waving and waving and waving endlessly saying “Bye mummy, bye mummy!” My heart crashed into a thousand little pieces with the feeling that I’m abandoning my baby … but it had to be. “It’s just his first day in school,” I kept telling myself. My proudest moment was to find out from his teacher later how cool and composed and well-behaved he was in school, knowing deep down how clingy and needy he really wanted to be when we left him there. My little baby was a ‘big’ boy already. But in my heart he will always be my baby boy! - Geraldine Lee, TTDI Children! They are blessings from heaven! What else can they be when nothing else in the world can give more joy than they do. That’s what my 18-month old son does when he simply smells my

cheek and strokes my face just so he can fall asleep. Without this ‘ritual”, he can’t fall asleep! There is so much love and affection in that simple gesture but it fills me to overflowing happiness … it will forever be etched in my mind. - Michelle Ng, Cheras I remember those moments … and there are so many of them. I can’t recall just one but knowing that there are many makes me say how much I love being a parent more than anything I have ever been or have ever done in my life. There is no greater joy than when one becomes a parent. - S. Latha, Seremban There is a lullabye which I had sung for my children every night when they were babies up until they were about three years old. It was a song from the cartoon “Jungle Book” called “Be Brave Little One”. I had sung it to them too many times that I never really knew whether or not it meant anything to them. Until one night, when I was ill, both my boys came to the side of my bed and sung me that lullabye. They were still both toddlers and could barely manage the right lyrics but it was music to my ears! These are the moments that make life worth living. I was well way on the road to recovery after that! I have my children to live for! - Yvonne Yong, Taman Tar I’ve watched and observed my baby take her first few steps to how she can now run, climb, jump and even dance! What amazes me is her determination and how she keeps trying after every fall. She simply gets up, brushes herself off and tries it again. This is most memorable for me ‘cause it says a lot about what a fine adult she’ll grow up to be. - E. Rahim, Puchong My son is so funny in many unexpected ways. He has such a great disposition and he’s always cheerful and jolly about everything! Even the smallest things can be an adventure for him! Everyday is a cherished moment with him as I watch him come up with new antics. He’s just one happy baby overall! He just makes my day! - Ivan V., Sri Petaling

My baby began babbling and cooing at six months but by the time she turned one, she was already stringing words together! Whatever comes out of her mouth is pure joy to me! She can just be screaming or squealing but just hearing her voice and make effort to communicate makes me so proud! - Aishah, proud mum My husband claims our son, Justin’s first word was “Dada”, but I could’ve sworn it’s “Mama”. Then came the “Baabaa” (from Baa Baa Black Sheep), “Bye”, “Hi” and “Uh-Oh!” We recorded every single first word that came out of his mouth. These are priceless to us! - Farra S., Titiwangsa There is a special kind of love that goes on between a mother and her son. My son means the world to me but I realised that he, too, is very protective of me. I’ve just been recently separated and my boy, who’s only four, seems to understand what I’m going through. One night when I was probably evidently wallowing in my misery, my son just hugged me and said, “Mummy, I wish I were your husband!” - Christine, Puchong “A – La – Bu!” may mean nothing to everyone else but this is really “I love you!” in my baby’s language. How to Survive the Toddler Years Parents often refer to this time in their child’s life as “the terrible twos and threes”. Their mood swings like a pendulum and “NO”, “ME” and “MINE” seem to be their favourite words. They think they are the centre of everything and they will never share anything. And their inability to express themselves only makes them all the more frustrated. Don’t despair! Your child is only being a toddler! 19 March - April 2009

Parents share life lessons with other parents

They may be the smallest member of the family but when children reach the age of one to three years, they begin to take charge. They will never do what you tell them to do. They hit and say “No!” to everything you say. They will throw a fit and take control over you until things are done in exactly the way they want it done. At your wits’ end? Take it easy. A better understanding of what is going on with your children at this phase can make you see why they can be so demanding and defiant. Being a toddler can be very challenging. To be able to talk, walk, sleep alone, eat, pee and poop in a toilet all on their own is a tall order. With all these things they are supposed to master, we should see the toddler age more as the “terrific twos and threes”. Parents of tots give some tips on how you can regain your sanity and regain control over your home even when the little one seems to be acting like the big boss around the house.

Parents share life lessons with other parents

Moody Monsters Be patient with your toddler. It’s not that they are just “terrible” by nature. With my kids, I saw a lot of growth and change from the ages of one to four, where mood swings and negativity were almost always the order of the day. Because of the many physical and emotional developmental changes they are going through, they are unable to do certain skills that leave them frustrated. They may have the will to do it, but not yet the skill. This, then, ends up in frustration and that is why they misbehave. - S. Ridzuan, Sri Hartamas The mood shifts can be worse than any rapid change of weather. Just observe a toddler. Their emotions are very intense. They can also be easily upset. But don’t worry, this is usually short-lived. Remember that you’re the adult and your toddler is the child. So be very patient with them. - Kah Wei, patient Dad

Little Mr. & Ms. Independence It’s easy to tell when your child begins to discover himself. You know they are becoming aware of themselves as a little person distinct from their parents when they see and recognise their reflection in a mirror. I did this to my little girl when she was two. I got my lipstick and drew a heart on her cheek with it. When she reached for her face to erase the heart drawing, I knew that she had achieved that important milestone of self-recognition. - Shirley L., mum to two tweens & former toddlers

My baby began to imitate us and the behaviour of other adults with her simple pretend games. She would do what mummy does all the time by helping around the house. I knew then that this meant she had developed a strong sense of self. - G. Yap, proud mum

What are toddlers most concerned about? Themselves! They view themselves as the centre of the universe! At this age, my boy only cared about his own needs. He became very possessive and even toys that were not his were quickly grabbed and became “mine!” We just couldn’t get him to share. He would play beside other children but not with them. Most of the time, he just played by himself. Don’t be concerned about this solitary play. It is just a stage where fantasy play does not involve others. - Rosalind K., Damansara Never expect a toddler to share. They can’t help being very selfcentred and sharing is naturally very difficult. But while it may seem impossible to get them to understand the concept of sharing, it would still help if parents make the effort to keep them involved with others their age. Remember that this is a critical age in your child’s life and your support and patience will determine how they develop and grow. - Rachel Tan

Tots & Tantrums My son always throws a fit when he doesn’t get what he wants. So I usually find myself giving in to his demands. But now that I know he’s manipulating me, I don’t anymore give in to the tantrum. I realised that giving him what he wants only encourages him to have a tantrum the next time he demands something. - Sandra, mum-got-smarter

Model: Superkidz Club member Areeya Amali Ranatunga with mum Chamin

While they may appear to be more independent, they will still suffer from separation anxiety. They’d enjoy their new found freedom from taking their first few steps and having the ability to walk. But with that also comes a need to return to the safety and security of their parents. They will still ask for their parents. - Thomas Phillips, child psychologist

Me, Myself & I

Models: Superkidz Club member Muhammad Firman bin Hifzi & younger brother Ryan with mum Marfuza

When my son became self-aware, he began to express new emotions. Along with self- recognition came feelings of embarrassment, shame and pride. He also started to show feelings of jealousy. - Jasmine Chan, Melaka The minute they become a toddler, it’s like they start to develop amnesia. All of a sudden, they won’t remember rules. They’d like to do things independently and do things for themselves. It would seem useless to tell them how things should be because they would have their own idea of how things should happen. This is why they always assert themselves by saying “No!” all the time. - Mohan V., been-there Dad

Parenting 101

Let your child yell, cry and scream without an audience. Don’t give in to the tantrum by letting him have his way. When he calms down, speak to him clearly about how his behaviour cannot be tolerated. Warn him that next time he does that again; there will be a consequence, like taking away his favourite toy. And next time he does throw a tantrum, make sure you enforce what you had threatened. Take away that favourite toy as you had warned. - stern & firm Susan My little girl used to have manipulative tantrums just to get her way. I would let her lose it completely. Then, when the storm is over, I’d speak to her with a firm voice and demeanor about how unacceptable her behaviour was. - Cynthia, Sungei Long Believe it or not, even toddlers can have very long days. A child can be over-stimulated, tired and, yes, stressed. When this is the state he is in, any simple event like knocking over and breaking a toy could trigger a major tantrum. Fix the problem that triggered the fit. Calm him down by staying close to him but give him space if that would help, too. Move away but stay where he can see you. - Jennifer O., PJ

Sometimes our children’s tantrums are only due to how overwhelmed they may be by their own emotions. They don’t want to lose control. Sometimes they can’t help it. When they’re completely out of control, parents should let their presence be a calming influence. If you lose your cool, your child will only have even more intense emotions. So keep your composure and take deep breaths. Try breathing together, then hugging and stroking. It works for me. - Vivian, Primary School Head No matter how much your child wails and flails around, you must never let him get destructive … especially not to himself. Make it crystal clear that hurting himself, others and property is unacceptable no matter what. After the tantrum, give a form of punishment if you must. - Tough love mum Try to identify the feelings and circumstances that brought about his tantrum. If, let’s say, it was staying up beyond his bedtime, make sure that he never gets overtired again. Look out for the trigger and try to avoid it so that things don’t get out of hand next time. - Brian S.

Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning got her first break in acting at age five when she did a Tide commercial and then in the same year, in a Georgia State lottery commercial with musical legend Ray Charles. It was her appearance in the TV medical drama, “E.R.”, though that gave her the big break. From there, Dakota appeared in more TV shows and then branched out into films. Dakota said when we interviewed her, “I really appreciate the love of my family and friends. I am glad that I have that support group around me. My parents have taught me to stay true to myself and to never, never change. That has helped me stay grounded in this business.” Dakota has no regrets joining the business. She pointed out, “I think that when I started acting, it kind of turned upside down for the better. I think I got such an opportunity when I was six. ‘I Am Sam’ was my first movie and I think my life is probably a lot different now than it would have been if I had never been given the opportunity to be in that film. I just feel so blessed to have had my life go into a whole new orbit at such a young age.” Dakota just finished the action-thriller “Push” and the Julia Chong (left) with part of the TLC Team

“For everyone to reach their stars” That is the idea behind the Truly Loving Company (TLC), a company that is all about quality and all for charity.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Blythe Barrymore, for instance, was born into the showbiz world with both parents as actors and a famous grandfather actor, John Barrymore. Even before she was a year old, Drew already starred in television commercials and at age three, made her first movie, “Suddenly Love.” Thanks to her godfather, Steven Spielberg, Drew became a household name at age five when she appeared as Gertie in “E.T.” Now, Drew is a respected actress-producer-businesswoman in the Hollywood world. Drew recently did the voice of Chloe in “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and was seen in the blockbuster romantic comedy, “He’s Just Not That Into You.”

The Truly Loving Company is the first ‘socially responsible’ business in the country. TLC develops, manufactures and markets their own line of household and personal care products, such as body wash, dish wash and floor cleaner. Like most companies, their products are manufactured to a high quality level and competitively priced. But unlike most companies, TLC gives 100% of its dividends to worthy Malaysian charities. Sounds impossible, or even ludicrous? Not so, according to founder and CEO Julia Chong. “We are what you’d call a social enterprise,” explained Julia. “Although we support charities and NGOs, we are neither. We run a business just like any other big corporations. The only difference is that all of our dividends go to charities. Our aim is to drive sales and profit for philanthropy, so as to provide worthy organisations with a regular, sustainable and long term source of financial support.” As of now, TLC supports five ‘charity partners’, namely Rumah Aman, Hospis Malaysia, Shelter Home for Children, Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Association

Other than being qualified registered charities, these organisations were chosen based on their core values that are aligned with those of TLC’s – that they must be caring, transparent, accountable and have integrity. “We’ve also tried to support charities in different categories to cover a wide section of the community, such as those for children, for the elderly, the sick and handicapped,” added Julia. Growing up in a family of nine kids, Julia (being the seventh child) felt very fortunate that her father was someone who believed in education. “My dad believed that if you nurture a child, if you give the child the opportunity, he or she can be successful. He treated all of us (his children) equally, and it didn’t matter to him that I was a girl. For that, I’ll always be grateful,” reminisced Julia. Perhaps it is such paternal nurturing and guidance that has motivated her to help those less fortunate, to give them an equal opportunity in life as well.

RM22,018.00 - The mock receipt presentation by Mr Lee Hwee Chuin, Head of School of Social Science and Humanities, to the founder of TLC, Ms Julia Chong. TAR College students recently took TLC as their event management subject. Their campaign was to build awareness of TLC by having a three-day exhibition in TAR College in August 2008.

Before starting TLC, Julia was in charge of a group of companies in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indo-China as the Managing Director of a large multinational FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) company. She was at the top of her career; but as much as she enjoyed the work and felt very fortunate to be reaping the rewards, Julia believed that she could do more for those in need. She had been planning her ‘vision’ for many years, and in July 2006 she was able to put her plans into action by establishing TLC.

customer loyalty in the long run. “People always say they don’t have time or enough money to help those in need. Well now I tell them that they don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary to help. If you wash dishes (which I think everyone does!), then buy our dish wash. If you need to mop the floor, try our floor cleaner. So far we’ve developed 42 products, each as good as those of the leading brands, and we’re priced competitively. So the choice is not that hard to make”, enthused Julia.

Giving up a corporate career and venturing out on her own was not a hard decision to make for Julia. She sees it as a way of balancing her life, just like a phrase found on the company’s website – ‘We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.’ As Julia reasoned, “The expression was penned by one of our website designers, which I find is very true. For everyone, there is this daily grind of making a living. At the end your life though, it doesn’t matter how much money you’ve made, but what you’ve given back. You have to ask yourself - Have you made that difference? In life there must be balance. I’ve a good life and great kids, and so now I feel it is my time to give back.”

As the company grows, so will the list of charities. And in order for TLC to grow, they will need all the support they can get from the public. Remember, you don’t need to donate your money; as Julia puts it, “Just try our products and tell your friends about TLC. There’s nothing better than word of mouth!”

One might ask her – why not just donate money to charity, or join an NGO? Would she not be helping the needy as well? “Well, although that route may be a lot easier and less troublesome (than starting a company from scratch), there is only so much you can do with donations or helping an organisation,” Julia rationalised. “Establishing TLC is a much tougher route to take, but in my opinion, so much more rewarding and fulfilling. We just have to ‘slog’ through it for a few years and when TLC becomes successful, that’s when we’d feel the satisfaction (of a job well done)!” Julia also believes that by establishing TLC, she will be able to leave a viable legacy that can continue to flourish even after she is no longer running it. The business need not be run by her children who, although supportive of their mother’s business, have their own chosen careers. “Most people don’t understand that charities need money for their day-to-day running. A lot are willing to donate food or supplies, but few are willing to give money for fear of being conned. That’s understandable, but people have to realise that bills still need to be paid. I’ve visited a Home where one room was piled full with rice bags! They can’t live on rice alone. That is why I believe that making TLC successful is an important goal.” In order to make TLC profitable, a lot of effort has been put into ensuring that all their products are made to high standards. Julia understands the importance of quality and how it will generate 26

The Beginnings Of Reading The magic of reading starts long before children recognise words and sentences, and the most important message that parents and teachers can convey to young children is that reading is all about understanding. This is the key that can unlock the mystery of reading and eventually motivate children to read for pleasure.

The development of reading skills begins the minute a child picks up a book or a parent begins to share books with the child to tell stories. Books for very young children often have no print at all and rely on pictures to tell the story. Parents can ‘read’ these books with young children by first looking at the front cover and talking about the picture and the title. As parents tell the story, children will learn to listen and to make sense of the pictures and the sequence of events. Even at this stage, children should be encouraged to take part and talk about the pictures, to ask and answer questions such as ‘why’ or ‘how’ an event is taking place, or even to guess what is going to happen next in the story. This interaction with the story and the encouragement of prediction skills will make the book come alive for the children as well as ensure that they understand what the story is all about. To encourage children’s interest in books, parents should take advantage of their growing awareness and curiosity about the world around them and use this to develop all their skills in a positive manner. Making books is a wonderful way to do this. When making books with your children, always start with their interests and experiences. For example, you could take them to the zoo, and take photographs of them with different animals, or even buy some animal postcards. You could use these to make a simple book of four to eight pages, sticking a different picture on each page.

There are several important points to remember when making such books for your children to read: • Keep it simple. Four to eight pages is sufficient. Any longer and young children will probably lose interest. • Stick to one caption or a simple sentence per page. Make the caption repetitive so that children come across key words again and again. • Write the caption in large, clear print (not cursive writing) with a thick black pen. Alternatively, you can type it on the computer. Use clear, large fonts, such as comic sans (font size 36). • Involve children in the process. Draw on their thoughts and ideas. Let them stick in the pictures or add some colour to the book. By doing this, the book will have real meaning for them. • Encourage children to share the book with family and friends. This can become a much-loved book that will be read many times. If you can convey the joy of reading to your children from an early age and can show them that people read to find out, to discover and to enjoy, then you will be giving them one of the most useful and satisfying skills they can acquire in life. Article contributed by Lorna Whiston Study Centres.

Talk to your children about each of the photographs and see what they have to say and recall. Then, using their ideas, write a simple, repetitive sentence on each page of the book.

Coping in Crisis

– Reducing Debt

Getting out of debt – You know you have to do it, you want to do it but you just don’t know where to start. It is so easy to get into debt these days with banks offering credit cards with high spending limits and cash advances on your credit cards. However, not everyone realises that this is a costly form of borrowing as the interest rates are very high. And if you do not pay off the outstanding balance, the rollover effect will make your debt balance shoot into the stratosphere. Here are some steps you can take but you must stick to the plan, otherwise, it will all be in vain.

• Cut it up

Cut up all your credit cards now, except for, perhaps, one card that you might want to keep for emergencies. However, this card should not be kept in your wallet or purse as the temptation to use it may be too great to resist.

• Pay the minimum

You must pay more than the minimum amount on your credit card bill each month in order to reduce the debt substantially. With interest rates running at up to 17.5% per annum, it could take more than ten years to pay off your debt if you only met the minimum repayment.

• Know the charges & fees

Similarly, when your child learns to separate the first sound from a word, that first sound doesn’t make sense either. It’s just a sound. While phonemes are meaningless sound utterances, your child needs to attend to the initial phonemes of words (first sounds) by being able to not only identify them, but to manipulate them by subtracting or adding first sounds to words. Take word bear. Help your child get PM the I Canthe Read 25.6.08.ai 25/6/08 4:11:52 first sound /b/ and elongate the diphthong

ear. Have your child access the /b/ and the /ear/ and ask, “What word remains if you take the /b/ from bear?” The answer is air (a new word). Using this approach, children are challenged to attend to the initial phonemes of words even as they come to realise that the presence or absence of the initial phoneme can result in two different words. As your child gains an understanding of what happens when the first sound is removed from the word, gradually work up from the easier initial consonants to more difficult ones. Here are some examples for you: beat (eat), bend (end), band (and), boil (oil), bone (own), bus (us), care (air), case (ace), cold (old), cow (ow), game (aim), lake (ache), part (art), pat (at), pit (it), pitch (itch), poke (oak), tall (all), and towel (owl).

Testimonials from parents of E.nopi MATH students Parent’s Name: Josephine Loo Student’s Name: Chong Yi En E.nopi MATH Centre: Jusco Tebrau City, Johor Bahru our amazement, he has done extremely well in his schoolwork. After his mid-term result, his pre-school principal even upgraded my son to another advanced class. The teacher informed us that he was always the first to finish his work before the others, especially the mathematics subject. He knows how to do the sum, which his peers in the class might still not understand. At five years old, he can even manage to do basic addition, which is something we did not learn to do until we were seven years old. Without any hesitation, I can proudly say that it was the special techniques and programmes of E.nopi MATH that has sharpened both his analytical and critical thinking skills. Thank you E.nopi MATH; we will highly recommend this programme to all our friends who would like their children to acquire some extra enrichment courses.” “Frankly speaking, we enrolled my son in an enrichment programme that was known for being one of the best in town. I was influenced by a lot of my friends who said it is good and will help my son a lot in his school curriculum. I personally went to check it out and to my disappointment, it was not up to my expectation - particularly the learning environment.

Are you too busy to hug your child? When was the last time you hugged your children? Was it an affectionate hug, where you wrapped both arms around them and held them close to your heart? Or was it just a quick hug where you let go in a second, and then quickly turned your head back to your work? Hugging is not just healthy for our bodies but is healthy for our soul as well. Researchers from the University of North Carolina found that hugs increase the ‘bonding hormone’ called oxytocin and decreases the risk of heart disease. Hugs can also reduce high blood pressure and reduce stress. If you are living a very stressful life, start hugging your loved ones! Hugs help us develop good feelings. So when we feel good all the time, we are attracting positive energy and that will eventually lead us to great happiness – at least this is my personal experience! Other than a form of bonding, when you hug your children affectionately, they will feel accepted and appreciated - how much mummy or daddy cares and loves them! This sense of acceptance is very important as it will affect their overall growth and development. This is because self-esteem and confidence are increased, which are a result of feeling good about themselves and their environment. On the other hand, those that lack a sense of acceptance will feel lonely or unloved, and this negative feeling does not motivate them to learn. Some of these children may deviate and create a lot of social problems when they grow up. Hugging our children is not a common custom in most families in our society. Or, when they start schooling, we tend to stop hugging them. As parents, we tend to be reserved and do not outwardly show our affection for our children. Perhaps we are afraid that by doing so, we will look 'weak' in front of our children. Some believe that hugging children will spoil them. All these are just the old-fashion way of thinking! We are now living in the 21st century, so we should change our mentality and perception. Hugging can do wonders in a parent-child or even a teacher-child relationship. Human touch heals and boosts self-esteem as well as brings a sense of security to both the giver and the receiver.

Then I came to know about E.nopi MATH through my cousin. She told me that E.nopi’s working materials have a lot of colourful icons and images that help make mathematics more fun and interesting to young children, and can easily attract their attention. After a purposeful discussion and lots of consideration, my husband and I decided to enrol our only son in the E.nopi MATH programme. Initially, we were quite worried that our son might not be able to cope with his schoolwork and this extra curriculum. To Parent’s Name: Chua Beng Hui Student’s Name: Lau Jing Wei E.nopi MATH Centre: Puchong Jaya “Mum, help me! I’ve a big problem with my maths!” There she goes again, shouting for help every minute, leaving me with not even a second to rest! My youngest daughter was always having problems with maths. No matter how hard she squeezed her brain juice for hours and tried to solve the problems, the pages of her math exercise book remained blank all the time! “How much more headache will I suffer?” I asked myself, feeling hopeless. Until one day, I found out there’s an excellent math centre called E.nopi MATH. Without letting a minute fly by, I quickly sent my daughter there, hoping that she would improve her math skills.

After a few months, her math results were getting better than ever. Even a lazy girl like her would enjoy doing all the math exercises, isn’t that a miracle? She couldn’t resist the fun of figuring out every problem on her own without needing to ask for my help. But, the most unbelievable thing was that a girl as greedy as her didn’t even touch the cookie tin that was in front of her. Instead, she would continue her work and would finish her E.nopi MATH homework as quickly as possible. I was really shocked, and at the same time, I felt really proud that my daughter has finally found her love for math. Now, it’s a new math world for her, and a new peaceful and quiet world for me! Thanks to E.nopi MATH for producing a ‘Math Maniac’ in my family and now I don’t have to take headache pills everyday!”

Toddler Concerns The time between the ages of one and four is a time of great learning and discovery for them. It is also a time of great concern for parents who may be at a loss as to what to expect in their toddler.

Toddlers’ Appetite Toddlers may eat less, but they tend to eat frequently throughout the day. They get better at feeding themselves, although spills should still be expected. Let your toddler sit with you at mealtime to watch how you eat and pick up the routine. The following are some healthy and easy toddler food: • •

Toddlerhood is the time they go from “baby” to “kid” and it is characterised by much growth and change, mood swings and negativity. Nevertheless, it is still an amazingly wonderful time for your toddler to develop confidence and courage as he sets out to master the challenges before him.

• • • • •

Here is a simple rundown to help parents understand what their child is going through at this stage.

• •

Speech Development • • • • • • •

Toilet training may start as early as 17 months. But for others, they may only be ready at the age of three. Your child is ready for toilet training when he or she: • • •

Understands the concept of using the toilet Has control over excreting waste; knows when he or she has to go to the toilet Moves his bowel at regular times everyday

Toilet training should start when: • • •

Parents can spend a lot of time with the child The child is eager to please the parents There are no major distractions or traumatic events in the child’s life such as a new sibling, divorce, moving or having a new caretaker.

Parents should never punish the child for failing at using the potty.

Toddlers don’t need as much sleep as infants but they still need a lot of sleep. Tantrums and bad behaviour are usually due to sleepy toddlers. The recommended sleep for toddlers is 14 hours per day. You’ll know your toddler is ready to move to his own toddler bed when he or she: • • •

March - April 2009

Is able to climb out of the crib on his or her own Is 36 inches tall Enjoys his or her newfound freedom

How Toddlers Play

Eager to Explore Toddlers begin to walk at this stage and their newfound freedom makes them burst with energy and ideas. They develop a need to explore their environment and an increased interest in their surroundings. They also like to touch everything. You need to make sure that they can explore in an environment that is safe for them.

How to childproof your home/safety devices you must have to prevent possible injuries: • • • • • • • • •

32

Baby carrots (microwaved with a half cup of water for two to three minutes until tender, not mushy) Frozen or fresh peas cooked the same way as the carrots then drained Bananas sliced thin Potatoes (microwaved until tender, cooled then peeled and cut into bite size pieces) Halved grapes Graham crackers Animal crackers (avoid “hard” brands that may be a choking hazard) Dry cereal Small pieces of bread or bagel

Sleep

Toddlers increase their vocabularies from about two or three words to about 250 words. At six to eight months, they add consonant sounds to vowel sounds. At one year, they can attach “Mama” or “Dada” to the right person. At 15 months, they can string vowel and consonant sounds together and say as many as ten different words. At 18 months, they can say nouns like “ball” or “milk”, names of special people and a few phrases. At two years, they can combine words and form simple sentences. At three years, they can understand most sentences and compose four to five word sentences.

Toddlers usually play alone but parents should not be so concerned about this. They are mastering the art of playing and the way they play has a lot to do with their age. • • •

Practice play (birth to 15 months) – they repeat an action to master a skill or gain control over something (e.g. dropping an object to see if mum or dad will pick it up) Onlooker play (15 months to two years) – they observe others at play rather than participate. This is how they learn to relate to others. Parallel play (two to three years) – they play in the same room with other children without actually interacting with them. This is also an opportunity for them to be a copycat and imitate the actions of others (e.g., imitating mum’s housework, pouring tea)

Nothing is more heart-warming than to see children doing their part to help other less fortunate children. On 6th December 2008, 40 aspiring musicians from ages four to 16 got together to perform in the Children for Children Charity Concert held at the Ballroom of Equatorial Hotel. After months of rehearsal, they entertained parents and friends with their performances on piano, violin and drums, as well as choral renditions of some well known tunes. The highlight of the day was when 12 children from the school performed Rasa Sayang and Jingling Nona.

A total of RM20,000 was raised for the CADS Enhancement Centre, which caters to the special educational needs of children with learning disabilities. The centre was developed to allow children who are born with learning disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Dyslexia and slow learners, to be educated even though they cannot attend mainstream schools. The event featured three leading practitioners

‘Right to Play’ Futsal clinic Organised by volunteers, the “Right to Play” Futsal Clinic was held in December 2008 where 23 Somali children were treated to a futsal session that gave them the opportunity to train with volunteer coaches. It was aimed at providing the children with a day of fun where they could interact and simply play football. The Clinic was made possible with the support and generosity of Sports Planet, Revive and Adidas. Adverse conditions in Somalia have forced many Somalis to flee their native home to seek refuge in countries such

as Malaysia. Without the opportunity to work, many struggle to make end’s meet. Without access to formal education and extracurricular activities, refugee children are deprived of learning via social activities. In response to this, some concerned citizens have volunteered their time to raise funds for the children so they can attend lessons at a makeshift school. They have set up a Somali Kids Education Fund and have started a group page to raise awareness on the plight of Somali refugees and refugees in general. The Last Say

Parents & kids have the last word!

The name ‘Einstein’ has been taken to mean ‘genius’. Albert Einstein was born on 14th March 1879 and died at the age of 76. Apart from being a brilliant scientist who gave us E = mc2, he was also named “Person of the Century” by Time magazine in 1999.

Other than a man of science, he was also very thoughtful and has churned out quite a few contemplative quotes. Just like his scientific theories, Einstein’s inspiring (and sometimes funny!) quotes are quite relevant, that everyone can relate to.

“Only a life lived for others is a life worth living.” “There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle.” “We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” “If you cannot explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” “The reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” “The tragedy of life is what dies inside a man while he lives.”

“Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy.” “Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted.”

“The only rational way of educating is to be an example – if one can’t help it, a warning example.” “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” “Anyone who doesn’t take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either.”

“Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.”
