Dear Readers, Is it May already? They say time flies when you are having fun and we have certainly been doing that. In this issue, you can see what the Superkidz editorial team has been up to. Mid-April saw us spending three full days at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in KL where we participated in the Smart Kids 2011 event. Thousands of parents and children visited our booth to collect free magazines, gifts and to participate in our lucky draw. Some of our readers dropped by to say hello to the team as well. We had a great time meeting all of you who came by and appreciate all the positive comments that we received about our magazine! Our publisher, Kit, who also co-founded Kidz Smart Academy, was invited by Ireka Corporation Berhad to run a short financial literacy class for the children of the Lighthouse Children Welfare Home. The children had a great time learning about saving money and playing games. Kidz Smart Academy is also organising P.E.A+.K. programmes for kids during the school holidays, such as financial literacy, effective goal setting, writing creatively and public speaking (page 19). Some events that you may be interested in – ever considered hypnotherapy for children? It is a simple yet effective way to help children get over challenges. In May, Kidz Smart Academy, together with Billy Kueek International will be organising hypnosis sessions for children (page 19). For parents who want to know how to coach their children, there will be a parenting workshop to do just that (page 17). We would like to take this opportunity to wish all the parents, Happy Mother's Day and Happy Father's Day! And pssst kids, do cut out the coupons on page 21 for some extra special gifts for your parents.
Happy School Holidays!

After a long day at
work, all I want is to have a stress-free commute and go home. However, since I take the monorail, that is not possible most of the time. Polite people can suddenly become so rude and uncivilised during peo rush hour – it’s a mad house at the train station! Even when the train is already fully packed, people will still barge their way in. Som Sometimes it is so bad that I’m literally crushed in the middle of crowd and I cannot even stand properly! People do not have the cr to worry about pickpockets, but they need to worry about suffocating!
As a working mum, sometimes it can be quite hard to balance work and home responsibilities. So I am very grateful to my husband for being supportive and encouraging me to pursue my career. I’m also very thankful that my children are good kids and quite obedient, meaning I have less headache at home, haha! No doubt it will always be hard to juggle between these two ‘worlds’, but I believe that if you strive for the best, you will be the best! Alysha, sent via email
The other day I told my best friend that I have a crush on one of our colleagues and she told everyone in our department! I was so embarrassed that I didn’t dare to look at my guy colleague after that! The bright side of this ‘tragedy’ is that I discovered the guy actually likes me too! I know Valentine’s Day has long passed but I would like to wish all single people - good luck in finding your true love!

I saw a father publicly punish and humiliate his son in front of everyone at a hypermarket recently. The boy was simply running around when suddenly the father grabbed simp so and slapped him! Then he was shouting and scolding the son the boy for being naughty. He made such a big commotion that everyone stopped and turned around to stare at the boy. You could see he was really humiliated because his face was bright red and he kept looking down. Parents should understand that punishing their kids as a way to make them behave will not necessarily work all of the time. Concerned citizen, sent via email

Very often, the skin is exposed to irritating ingredients in cosmetics or detergents, high stress levels, air-conditioning and extreme climates like the hot sun and cold, windy days. UNLEASH YOUR IMAGINATION! Improving Children’s Creative Writing Skills “You write interestingly only about things that genuinely interest you.” Hughes, poet Ted ~ “You need a quick beginning. Get right into the story otherwise people won’t go on reading.” ~ Roald Dahl, children’s author
Helpful Hints • Encourage children and teens to read a broad range of narrative tales. Guide them in analysing how writers create their effects. Children can be inspired to imitate ideas from their reading materials. • Focus on finding an initial opening for the story that acts as an invitation to read more. A story can start in a dramatic manner, as an interesting introduction to the main characters or as an exclamation which will draw the readers straight into the action. • Investigate endings. We all know how it feels like if we miss the ending of a story. An ending can be in the form of a moral point, an indication of what has been learned and gained through the story or a hint of what might happen in the future.
Many more helpful hints on ways to tap into students’ creativity were shared among teachers of English who took part in the Lorna Whiston’s International Young Learners TESOL Conference in Kuala Lumpur on 2nd April 2011. Themed 'Language Alive: Creative Approaches to Language Teaching', the one-day conference saw international educators and industry experts sharing ways to tap into students’ creativity as a means of motivating students and helping them become more effective communicators. Teachers left the conference armed with renewed energy for language teaching, plus a toolkit of ideas for making their language lessons come alive.
• Consider carefully the characters in the story. Develop their personalities through vivid descriptions, dialogue, the names they are given as well as their actions and behaviour. • Work on sentence structure. Think of different ways to make a boring sentence more interesting. Try including adverbs, adjectives, lively vocabulary and alternative verbs. Children and teens can note down ‘effective’ words in a writing journal or vocabulary book. • Use a story planner to work out the plot. Think of the following key questions: √ √ √ √ √ √ 16
Who – are the characters? Where – does the story take place? Why – are the characters there? When – does it happen? Time, weather, etc… What – happens to start the story going? How – will it be written? “I” or “She / He”; present or past tense? May – June 2011

Coaching children for success How many of us had grand plans when we were younger - wanting to run a major corporation, be the best tennis player in the world, become President and yet, how many of us actually see our plans turn into reality? What stopped us from achieving them? And more importantly, can we do anything about it? There are also those who do achieve their goals and are very successful and still have this feeling of emptiness within themselves, that there is something missing. If you feel that there is something holding you back from becoming the person you were meant to be, then you should speak to a coach who will help you discover what is truly important to you, what is the purpose you so desperately seek yet did not know it was missing and help you live a rich and full life. Coaching is a form of personal development where the coach and the client work closely together to help the client achieve their goals. Coaching is applied in many areas of life, from sports to business to personal, depending on the client’s needs. The coaching relationship is a special one. In order for it to work, you must first be prepared to work on whatever problems may arise. Secondly, you must be open to sharing as it is by being open that the coach is able to discover the root of the problem and therefore address the issue. The coach has been professionally trained and is the best person to help you so let him do his job. There have been times when we see clients telling coaches what they think the problem is and how the coach should help them.
Different types of coaching Life coaching – the coach facilitates the client’s growth in work and also in personal life. Executive coaching – usually client is senior management or higher and the coach works on business related issues as well as on client’s personal development with the focus on achieving better business performance and results. Parent coaching – to help the client improve their parenting skills and help their children lead happy, balanced lives. Sports coaching – coaching the client to improve and develop their sports skills. The coach is not necessarily a sports trainer, but rather one who focuses on the client’s mindset, to think like a winner. Depending on the client’s specific needs, there are many more forms of coaching that are available. Billy Kueek International certifies Impact System© coaches who use a combination of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Time Line Therapy™, Hypnotherapy and Emotional Intelligence to help their clients in a variety of areas. To find a qualified coach or for more information on how to become a certified Impact System© coach, call Kit on 012-434 9500 or email kit@billykueek.com Kidz Smart Academy in collaboration with Billy Kueek International will be organising a coaching workshop for parents (see below).

Parents play a significant role in their children’s lives, not just in providing them with a home, education and food but also to support and guide them through life’s journey. As manager or business owners, they regularly coach their staff to achieve the company’s goals and objectives.
Using NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Hypnotherapy and EQ (Emotional Intelligence) techniques, parents will learn how to be more effective in influencing your children, helping them be more positive and how to gain their trust.
Yet, when they are back in the home environment, parents seem to forget that they already have the skills to coach. They just need to know how to adapt those skills for the family. In the workshop, our Master Coaches will share with you effective coaching strategies and principles which you can

A jolly good time at Smart Kids 2011! The country’s biggest and longest running kids’ education fair celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and the Superkidz team was there! Held at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from 15th to 17th April, Smart Kids 2011 promised fun playing and learning for all, and that was exactly what hundreds of thousands of families and kids got when they visited!
Luckily the situation turned around when a group of students came to the booth. When they heard that the magazines were free, they quickly grabbed a copy of all the different issues as though they were candies! After seeing that, everyone else followed suit and the rest, as they say, is history. By 2pm on the last day, over 14,000 copies of the magazine had been successfully given away - amazing!
The event was a great opportunity for fans of Superkidz magazine to meet the Superkidz team and to join the Superkidz Club. Best of all, every visitor who came by the booth was offered copies of past magazine issues as well as free goodies from generous sponsors such as Billy Kueek International and Sri KDU. Children were also invited to join a simple contest to win even more goodies on the spot.
Though it was tiring, the Superkidz team had a great time as the atmosphere at Smart Kids 2011 was really fun and lively. There was never a dull moment as the entire place was filled with bright colours, music, balloons and sounds of excitement from children. Clowns and a variety of ‘brand’ mascots also made their appearances throughout the event, much to the delight of kids who stopped to take photos and to shake hands with the mascots. There were many other interesting activities as well such as sushi-making lessons, rock climbing, treasure hunts and free sampling of food and drinks.
As awesome as that sounded, people were reluctant to take the magazines at first because they thought it was for sale. Even when the Superkidz team assured them that it was free for their reading pleasure, some of them still refused. They just could not believe anyone can be so generous!

Money savvy children at Lighthouse! The Lighthouse Children Welfare Home is a safe home that focuses on creating a loving, family-oriented environment where vulnerable children from underprivileged and difficult backgrounds can start anew. Founded by husband-and-wife team Steven and Jacinta, it is not a typical charitable organisation as the children actually live together with the couple and their family. What initially started as a temporary safe base turned into a permanent foster home when an alcoholic couple could no longer take care of their two sons. Several months later they took in another two boys whose parents were drug addicts. Then, three sisters arrived - children from a single mother who was forced to lock them in a room while she was at work. By that time the Stevens’ family home had become too small and a new location was found. Now located in Bangsar at a big house with a big garden, more than 30 children call the Lighthouse their home. Much importance is placed on education, and so all of them are in school. In light of this, Kit - the publisher of Superkidz Magazine who is also the co-founder of Kidz Smart Academy (KSA) - was recently invited to run a short financial literacy class for the children of Lighthouse. Kit was invited by Ireka Corporation Berhad, a company that has adopted Lighthouse as part of their CSR (corporate social responsibility) activity since 2010. Building on its expertise as a contractor, developer and IT expert, the company provided maintenance, refurbishment as well as IT support to the home under its IREKA CARES initiative. So in its effort to provide a fun learning experience for the children, Ireka invited Kit to spend a morning at Lighthouse and she was more than happy to do so. Upon arriving, she divided the children into two groups by age. The younger ones were given DIY coinboxes that they painted and assembled with the help of Ireka staff. Sponsored by KSA’s learning partner, Billy Kueek International, the coinboxes provided hours of fun for the kids. On the other hand, the older children were given a short introduction course on financial literacy. They learned how to be financially responsible in managing and saving their money. Kit made the session personable by giving real-life examples that the children could relate to. She covered topics like what is money, where does it come from, ideas on how the kids could budget as well as how to develop good financial management habits. After the session, the older children were able to better appreciate the importance and value of money. Funding for the Lighthouse is vital for the children who regard it as their home. Enabling them to stay in this conducive, stable environment under the loving care of the Steven’s family gives them the chance to grow up to become happy, healthy,
educated and responsible individuals. To learn mor more about the Lighthouse Children Welfare Home me and find out how ho you can help, visit www.lighthousewelfare.org e.org

My new classmates are not very nice. They are mean and make fun of me because they say I’m fat and ugly. I try to exercise, but whenever they tease me I just want to go home and eat more chocolate ice cream. I feel very sad. I hate everything and everyone. I hate being fat but I don’t know what to do. -- Anonymous, 13 years old
Dr Billy Kueek: Hello Anonymous, Moving and starting new chapters in life is a constant, as we are all faced with challenges whenever things or situations change. I do not have enough information about you, such as whether you are a boy or a girl, how is your family like, what is your height and weight so I cannot ascertain your BMI. Hence I will answer based on the information you provided.
The next time something happens, take note of your thoughts and feelings and then, what you do about it. Write them down as soon as possible. Then, when you are more calm and collected, look at your thoughts, feelings and actions again and then ask yourself, "What can I do to think/feel/act differently?" FUN FACTS • New characters add to the fun of the allnew story of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”: Blackbeard (IAN MCSHANE), the ultimate pirate villain; Angelica (PENÉLOPE CRUZ), a con-artist from Jack Sparrow’s past; Syrena (ASTRID BERGÈSFRISBEY), the mystical mermaid; and Philip (SAM CLAFLIN), the young mysterious missionary. • The fully functional Queen Anne’s Revenge is the first historical ship to be represented in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise.
• The Fountain of Youth, a legendary spring whose water was rumoured to return youth to anyone who drank it, was the object of an intense, but futile, search by Spanish explorer Ponce de León in the 1500s. • It was reported in mid-January 2011 that a team of archaeologists discovered fragments of Blackbeard’s sword while excavating his flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, off the coast of North Carolina (where it ran aground in the 18th century). The real Sword of Triton, perhaps?

Although Hal is a gifted test pilot, the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. Fortunately Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle. Along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had - humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (BLAKE LIVELY), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, not only will he prove to be the key to defeating Parallax… he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.
