Dear Readers, The festive season is upon us again and on behalf of the team at Superkidz, we would like to wish all our Muslim friends Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir
dan Batin!
As we seek forgiveness from relatives and friends, we should also realise that it is more important to be forgiving of others. Therefore, if there has been any time when the Superkidz team has upset or offended anyone, we too seek your forgiveness and thank you for your continued support. In this issue, we look at being safe on the internet, the DOs and DON’Ts guide for parents as well as children. We also learn about harnessing the power of hypnosis for a more positive state with Billy Kueek International. Find out about improving writing skills from Lorna Whiston in the second part of the series. Dr Billy Kueek addresses yet another parent’s question in his regular column, Dear Kidz. Parents, do send us more questions for Dr Billy to answer as he advises on some of the challenges faced by modern day parents. Hey mums, take some time out and treat yourself to a movie with the latest Julia Roberts film, Eat, Pray, Love. This adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel of the same name looks at the soul-searching journey of self-discovery taken by the author from Italy to India and finally to Bali. Definitely one for a girls’ night out! And for the kids, there is LEGEND OF THE
GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE
which is a full-length animation feature from the people behind ‘Happy Feet’. With this, we hope that you have a wonderful and happy Raya spent with your nearest and dearest!

I like to watch cartoons, eat junk food (occasionally!) and play Hide & Seek with my children. These things make me feel young again, and that’s something I’ll always look for ward to! Suhaidah, married with three kids
My mum tells me to be respectful of elders and my teachers, and to be courteous to everyone. She says having manners is something all ‘real men’ should have. But when I’m nice to people or my teachers, my friends tease me because they say I’m being a ‘goodie t wo shoes’. I get embarrassed but I will continue to be nice and polite because I hope to grow up to be a real man like my dad. Hisham (10), sent via email
Once I have finished kindergarten, I’m going to find a husband! Then he will work and get money so I can go shopping everyday… just like mummy!
I love my mummy and daddy very much because they take care of me. I love my mummy because she cooks for me and buys me prett y headbands. I love my daddy because he works very hard and he is handsome. Katie (5), sent in by mum Katherine

My dad says if I keep watching TV while I study, I will only end up learning about the TV shows. So I tell him if he keeps on checking emails when he talks to me, he will only end up talking to his emails, haha! Cheeky rebel, sent via email
I don’t like parents who push their kids into the limelight. They force their kids to join fashion and modeling contests, then boast about the kids’ achievements or popularit y. Then when the children don’t win, the parents will scold them in front of everyone. Why put such unnecessary pressure and attention on the poor kids? This is bad parenting skills. Use music to transform your lives! Change your life today with the Well Being Subliminal Series of three CDs. Specially produced by Dr Billy Kueek, the audio CDs use the latest technology and delivery techniques, together with Dr Billy’s specially written hypnotherapy scripts, to ensure that listeners will achieve the desired results from the programmes. Subliminal CDs work by sending messages to the Unconscious Mind so that you are better able to manage your attitude and behaviour. When the CD is played, listeners will only hear music and not the voice recording as it can only be picked up by the Unconscious Mind. Each CD addresses a different issue: • Emotional Mastery - Rid yourself of negative and unwarranted emotions. You no longer need to be held back by feelings of anger, abandonment or depression. Let the healing begin and remove any discomfort, anxiety or pain that may be troubling you. • Mental Mastery - What has been holding you back from achieving success? Having problems concentrating or managing stress? Improve concentration and be more creative. Manage stress better and attract the success you deserve. • Weight Management - Control your weight forever. Look better, feel better, gain confidence and self-esteem as your Unconscious Mind helps you achieve the results you want.
I’ve always had problems sleeping, most of the time because my mind is always too active. Amazingly, after I listened to the Emotional Mastery CD every evening after dinner, I found that I was calmer and am now able to fall asleep easily at night. Monique, mother of 2 active kids After using the Mental Mastery CD on a daily basis, I found that I could recall things better and am more alert compared to before. My husband has even noticed that I don’t get worked up so much when the children are running around the house. I’ve definitely found a way to manage my mental state better. Josephine, housewife and mother of twin boys When my sister gave me the CDs for my birthday, I was rather skeptical. How can you lose weight just by listening to them? But, with her encouragement, I decided to give it a try. Imagine my surprise when I started to eat healthier and cut down on fatty foods without even thinking about it! I am happy to say that I have lost 2kg and my dear husband is even surprised with the results! Kate Lim, slimmer and happier wife
Hypnotherapy should only be used as a supplement with, and not as a replacement for, any medical treatment. The normal retail price for the set of three CDs is RM180. However readers of Superkidz magazine can purchase it at the discounted price of RM100 only (excluding postage). Learn English the fun & natural way Language learning has never been easier with the new English range from Berlitz Kids. While an earlier range of products are more focused on bi-languages (European/ Asian), the new range focuses on the English language. Using cute, colourful illustrations and easy-to-learn basic words, young children are guaranteed to be intrigued by how effortless and enjoyable it is to learn a language. In My First 1000 Words (for ages one to five), every two-page spread is built around a theme with individual illustrations of selected words shown on the side. This allows children to explore the scene in the big picture. Instead of illustrations, My First Flash Cards (for ages three to six) are revamped with eye-catching and colourful photos. For My First Picture Dictionary (for ages four and above), all the headwords are in colour and are printed in a larger size for easier reading. Other forms of the word are provided as well, such as the plural forms of nouns and the different tenses of verbs. The new Berlitz Kids English range is available at MPH and Kinokuniya, and retails at RM39.90, RM16.90 and RM49.90 respectively. For more info, visit www.berlitzpublishing.com

Dear Kidz
You ask, we gather the answers!
I’m 47 years old and I’m a working mother of two teenage girls. I have a good job that pays very well, and I have a very supportive husband as well. But lately I don’t why; I don’t feel as motivated at work or energetic at home. It’s not that I’m ungrateful or unappreciative. I just feel very aimless and keep asking myself if there is more to life than a high-paying job and a harmonious family. Am I having a mid-life crisis, or am I simply asking for too much?
Tearing your hair out in response to your kids’ behaviour? Fret not! In our Q & A column with acclaimed trainer, bestselling author and master motivational speaker, psychologist and counselor, Dr. Billy Kueek doles out answers to your parenting questions from his wealth of workshops, newsletters, journals and audiobooks, but most of all, from the standpoint of ordinary parents.
Drifting Aimlessly
Dr Billy Kueek: Hello Drifting Aimlessly, Let me begin by congratulating you for your success in your career and family life. Many people struggle to achieve that balance and harmony. From your description, I am assuming that you are holding a high-paying job and hence, you either have tremendous capability or are highly educated. Therefore, my answers will be direct as well as complicated. I will attempt to make it easy to digest and understand and I welcome further contact, to be initiated by you, for more in-depth discussions. All motivation comes from within, deep inside us and is operated by the unconscious mind (also known as the subconscious mind). The motivators are called Values. You need to identify your values - the driving forces that drive you both at work and at home. To do this, get a piece of paper and write down at least 15 answers to the question, “What is important to me in my Career?” After you have compiled at least 15 answers, rank them in accordance to importance. The objective is to discover the driving forces within you. After you have your top 5 values, ask yourself if these values are aligned with what you are currently doing at work. If not, then you need to ask yourself, “What do I need to do about it?” Again, draw on your resources and come out with a list of options and actions you can take to renew your motivation. Once completed, do the same for ‘Family or Life’.
If you find that your top 5 values are aligned with what you are currently doing, both at home and at work, then we recommend that you seek out a Life Coach to help you further identify your patterns of motivation. You may call our office for an appointment to meet with a coach to help you further. This is because the process that we will take you through cannot be simply described in words here, as there are multiple skills required. For the time being, elicit your top 5 values and examine them. Realign your thinking and develop empowering answers to propel yourself forward. Just so you know - you are not alone. A successful real estate agency manager joined our recent NLP Practitioner Certification. A millionaire at the young age of 30, he is considered the best in his field. He is dating a lovely young lady and in terms of materialistic pleasure, the sky is the limit. Life is good for him. However, lately he felt the same way as you. Since he has achieved what he set out to do, he was losing his motivation. We helped him to identify and rank his top values and went a step further to discover his pattern of motivation for each of those driving forces. Predictably, each of his value was driven by more ‘Away From’ motivation than ‘Toward’ motivation, also known as the Pain-Pleasure Principle. ‘Away From’ motivation is being motivated by pain while ‘Toward’ motivation is driven by pleasure. When your values are driven by ‘Away From’ motivation, once you have achieved the goals you set out to accomplish , then there is no more impulse to move forward since there is a lack of ‘Toward’ motivation. Since he was motivated by ’Away From’ motivation, the next step we took was to remove all the negativities, baggages and limiting beliefs that exist deep within him and changed the motivation to ‘Toward’ motivation. The processes used are multi-prong, ranging from NLP Submodalities Belief Change to Time Line Therapy ™ Limiting Decisions. We also worked on removing all unnecessary and unwarranted Negative Emotions as well as Chaining Anchors to remove procrastination for motivation.

87% of Malaysian Kids Encountered Negative Online Experiences Among the statistics found in the report: Internet safety should be implemented in every household as more and more kids are becoming open targets to inappropriate content, giving out personal information and are meeting strangers they met online in real life. While parents are generally aware of what their children are doing online, they are still not too concerned about the amount of time the young ones spend online, underestimating the dangers that could arise. The Norton Online Family Report* findings showed that a massive 87% of Malaysian kids have at one time or another had a negative online experience. While most parents want to give their kids the freedom and trust when surfing the Internet, it is extremely important that parents are always in the know of what their kids are doing online. This should not be seen as an invasion of privacy, but rather a preventive measure to ensure that kids are constantly protected from cybercriminals and malicious activities. Not only that, it also fosters good relationship between parent and child through constant communication and mutual understanding. In fact, every child wants to be safe every time they are online. A huge number of kids in Malaysia have fallen victim to negative experiences online that leave them feeling angry, annoyed, upset, shocked, disgusted and afraid.

• DO talk to your parents or a trusted adult if you feel you are being harassed or bullied online. They can help in ways you may not have thought of. • DO teach your parents what they don’t know. While you’ve grown up online, mum and dad didn’t. This is your chance to show them a thing or two! • DO give your parents a break. Remember, all they’re trying to do is protect you and they may sometimes overreact. Let them cool off and talk when they (and you) are less emotional.

Education
Enopi MATH has achieved much success in Malaysia since it was first introduced in year 2004. Since its inception in Korea by Daekyo, the world’s largest open-school has 4.2 million students worldwide and has now been adopted in over 15 countries. In fact E.nopi MATH was recognised as the top brand in education for seven consecutive years in Korea.
Currently in Malaysia, Daekyo has 70 centres operating in the Klang Valley, Selangor, Johor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, Sabah and Ipoh. This effective E.nopi MATH programme has given children the extra boost of confidence they needed in their mathematics studies.
Each student is given the opportunity to learn according to his or her own pace and ability. It is not unusual for a child to start at a lower level than that in school as this will give him the chance to grasp the fundamental basics that he may not have fully understood. Students are allowed to self-correct their mistakes and work independently until there is mastery of skills.
At E.nopi MATH, students’ weaknesses are identified and worked on extensively. The instructors are always there to guide and help them through each step.
Once they have acquired the habit of self-study, they will experience a sense of achievement that will ultimately improve and surpass their usual performance in school.
Instructors are well-trained to stimulate and guide the young minds to join the ranks of a critical problem-solver.
Students are given booklets to work on and teaching tools during classes to help them learn in a concrete manner. They are required to attend classes twice or once a week, with each session lasting 30 to 45 minutes.
They also teach in a fun and exciting way that makes learning mathematics easy to understand, and so helps inculcate interest in the subject among children.
Together with the teaching tools, the visually and mentally stimulating curriculum lead children to develop their thinking ability and areas of critical thinking such as reasoning, logical thinking, memory, creativity, imagination, practical skills application and much more.
E.nopi MATH does not believe in giving children too much homework.
Children with motivation and challenged minds are those who are curious and excited to learn more, and who will eventually excel both in school and society. Let’s help them achieve that!

Foundation for Writing (Part 2) In this article, Mrs Lorna Whiston discusses ways to encourage children to express themselves through the written word.
E
arly writers know what they want to write but struggle to put it down on paper. When they are concentrating on one thing, such as content, they often overlook another area, such as neatness. At this stage, they would not have fully mastered the consistent use of basic punctuation yet, but they will make attempts at full stops, capital letters and question marks. Early writers will often use the same word or phrase to start sentences again and again, such as 'Then…', 'Then…', 'Then…'. They should also be able to provide some simple, basic description and details in writing. For children for whom English is a second language, they have the added burden of having to grapple with sentence structure and an unfamiliar language. It is little wonder then that many children find writing a challenge that they do not particularly enjoy. From an early age, direct your children’s attention to writing so that they understand that it is part of everyday life. Share the menu in a restaurant, show how you write down telephone messages or get them to help write a birthday card to grandma. When a child receives a birthday card, point out that the sender has written his name and a message on it. Involve children in helping to write shopping lists and bring them along to use the lists. Let them help you make a cake from a recipe and show how labels on packets help you choose particular foods. Children learn by imitation. If they see you writing, they will want to write too. Establishing writing as an important and enjoyable process that takes place frequently in your home is the first step to nurturing a creative writer. Try to write with your six to 10-year-old at least twice a week. Lists are a great way for children to begin writing. They can consist of one or two word ideas and usually have an immediate usefulness to the writer. Signs are another great way to encourage
written communication as they can be very simple and personal to the children. Help them to make and decorate room signs or labels for their belongings. Make it a family tradition to send each other notes and messages. Again these can start off very simply, such as ‘Have a great day at school’, or ‘Thank you for helping clean your room’. Have fun writing riddles and secret messages to each other. Very soon, your children will begin reciprocating these notes and you will have set the written communication wheel in motion. You could also try to start a family diary of ‘memorable events’ to record special days in a scrapbook, together with photographs and other mementos. When a child writes, he has a great many things to consider. He needs to decide who is he writing for and what sort of form it will take (such as a letter, a list, or a report). After deciding what he is going to write, he needs to find the appropriate words and phrases. He also needs to make decisions about spelling, punctuation and how to get the message across in an accurate, eloquent way. Whether your children are just starting to write independently or are already quite a proficient writers, they will need lots of praise and encouragement. Do not criticise their efforts. You can do more harm by working negatively with your children than not working with them at all. The last and most important message therefore is: Be positive with your child.

Self Development
W
ish to empower your child to be better in life and to achieve the success he or she deserves? Want to help your child overcome exam stress or boost his or her self confidence even more? Does your child lack communication skills or the confidence to speak in public? Kidz Smart Academy, in collaboration with Billy Kueek International, has recently launched the P.E.A+.K. (Personal Effectiveness for A+ Kids) programme which offers a series of fortnightly workshops for children between the ages of nine to 16. Recognising the growing demand for life skills programmes, International Speaker and Master Trainer Dr Billy Kueek has developed the programmes which will offer a range of skills that are not taught in schools. Drawing on NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), EQ (Emotional Intelligence) and incorporating Hypnotherapy, the workshops will be run by Certified NLP Practitioners and Professional Hypnotherapists, all personally trained by Billy himself.
Whilst the fundamentals taught in schools are important, Kidz Smart Academy believes that there is more to education than the 3Rs of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. With the motto ‘Empowering Minds and Unlocking Potential’, Kidz Smart Academy hopes to provide children with essential life skills to adapt to and deal with the challenges of life and be the best that they can be.

nosis – Public Hy p y H ar H f o pn o ness the Power t ypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context. It is a serious therapeutic technique that has amazing transformational power, yet is a pleasant and calming experience. Both the American and British Medical Associations have approved the medical use of hypnosis. Nowadays, many people are benefitting from hypnotherapy which helps in accelerating positive changes. This begins with the creation of an altered state of consciousness which stimulates the relaxation response that in turn enables the mind to be more open to suggestions.
Hypnotherapy allows you to tap on the power of the unconscious mind to release yourself from phobias and self-limiting beliefs. It will also help create positive changes so that you can finally overcome obstacles that may have been holding you back all this while and allow you to break through life’s challenges. Personal enhancement and development are now within your grasp. Billy Kueek International will be organising a series of workshops which will address the above issues. Held at the Centre for Personal Empowerment in Plaza Kelana Jaya, the workshops will be run by Professional Hypnotherapists. The one-hour workshops are open to members of the public who wish to experience the power of hypnotherapy at a special introductory rate. For those who may prefer personal sessions, these can also be arranged with the therapists. For more information on these workshops, please contact kit@billykueek.com or call 019-328 5733. 22

Poolside Etiquette The Dos & Donts of Swimming When it is hot and sunny outside, nothing beats a cool refreshing dip in the swimming pool. However, unless you own a private pool, chances are you will be sharing it with your condo neighbours or others at the public swimming pool. Here are a few proper etiquette and common sense tips that everyone should practise to ensure a splashing fun time for all. • Appropriate attire That means swimwear, not t-shirts, sport pants and definitely not underwear! Yes, there are those who believe it is okay to let children swim in their underwear or worse still – their diapers! Parents should absolutely refrain from doing so. Overtly revealing swimwear should be avoided as well. Regardless of the style of swimwear, modesty is key. • Look after the children & be aware of your conduct It’s great to have fun, but children should not disturb the general peace of the pool area. Pools are not known to be quiet places. However there is no need to disturb other users with excessive noise, rowdy activities, talking loudly on the mobile, screaming or laughing hysterically while playing water games. •
Silly behaviour is just that - silly Examples of such behaviour include pushing and shoving on the poolside, squirting water, splashing people or faking a drowning. All of these can be very dangerous and those who continuously engage in such behaviour may be asked to leave the pool, or they may not be welcome there anymore.
• No eating inside the pool How some can find pleasure in eating while paddling around the pool is beyond comprehension. It would be alright to have a poolside barbeque party, but it is another thing to jump in the pool with a hotdog in your hands! Not only is it inappropriate, it is highly unhygienic to all who use the swimming pool. • No drinking, smoking or gambling There is a time and place for everything. Unless it is a private pool party, adults should refrain from such vices at public swimming pools. • Shower or bathe before swimming Although this may sound like common sense, there are those who might think – I’m getting into the pool anyway, why should I clean up first? Well, the reality is, you will be sharing the pool with others; and while you are okay with the fact that your sweat or dirt will be floating around the pool, others might not be so accepting.
Although chlorine may kill some germs, it will not get rid of any nasty body odour that you may have. Swimming dirty will also contribute to additional bacteria being in the pool.

While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd (voice of RYAN KWANTEN), scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling.
