It is hard to talk to my parents when they are not home much. Even when they are, they will usually be busy doing work or reading stuffs. The only time they pay attention to me is when I get bad grades at school. Then they will scold and punish me. I wish they will pay attention to me too when I’m good. Sigh...

Recently my girl kept pestering me to buy her a goldfish. In the end I agreed and got it for her. Then a few weeks later she said we need to get another goldfish so that ‘Goldie’ doesn’t get lonely. I didn’t want to spoil her too much, so I said no. Then she said something that makes me smile to this day. She said, “But mummy, Goldie is like daddy – he needs a wife too!”

- Anonymous, sent via email It is tough and very hard to be a working parent. Not only do I have to worry about work and satisfying my clients, I also have to worry about how to help my son study better and help my daughter solve peer pressure problems. Yes, it can be quite difficult, but when I get home and see their happy faces, it makes it all worthwhile. Life can be beautiful when you are positive!

- Alice, sent via email

My parents have too high expectations! Even when I get 85 marks for my test, my dad will ask why I didn’t score higher. Last year I even got 1st prize in my class colouring contest, but my mum wasn’t excited like me. She said I should have concentrated more on my studies and not on colouring or painting. My parents are driving me crazy!

The other day I noticed a little girl eating with her parents. She looked about seven years old and was very cheerful and chatty. The whole time during lunch she was talking to her parents and they were laughing and having a good time as a family.

Then I looked at my eight-year-old son and he was busy playing with his handphone and sms-ing friends – totally ignoring me. I think most parents are spoiling their kids too much, including me. We need to try harder to really connect with them and be a part of their lives.

- Sad parent, sent via email

- Going crazy, sent via email Girls like flowers, so I gave some to the girl I like, but she was not happy. She said the flowers will die and that will make her sad. So next time she told me to get her a cactus or chocolate instead. Girls are weird!

Sing You Home

Safe Haven

Author : Jodi Picoult Price : RM59.90

Author : Nicholas Sparks Price : RM32.90 When a mysterious young woman appears in the small town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet modest, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties. That is until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships one with the kind-hearted, widowed store owner Alex, and another with her neighbour Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community.

Every life has a soundtrack. All you have to do is listen. For better or for worse, music is the language of memory. It is also the language of love. In the aftermath of a series of personal tragedies, Zoe Baxter throws herself into her career as a music therapist. When an unexpected friendship slowly blossoms into love, she makes plans for a new life, but to her shock, some people – even those she loves and trusts most – do not want that to happen. Sing You Home is about identity, love, marriage, and parenthood. It is about people wanting to do the right thing for the greater good, even as they work to fulfill their own personal desires and dreams. More importantly, it is about what happens when the outside world brutally calls into question the very thing closest to our hearts - family.

Even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realises that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards… and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

In his new book, bestselling author Robert Kiyosaki takes a new and hard-hitting look at the factors that impact people from all walks of life. He highlights his messages and challenges people to change their context and act in a new way. Readers are advised to stop blindly accepting that they are ‘disadvantaged’ people with limited options and question the preconception that they will struggle financially all of their lives. Robert's fresh approach to his time-tested messages includes clear, actionable steps that anyone can take, starting with education. Education becomes applied knowledge, a powerful tactic with measurable results. In true ‘Rich Dad’ style, readers will be challenged to understand two points of view, and experience how financial knowledge is their unfair advantage.

Dear Kidz

You ask, we gather the answers!

Tearing your hair out in response to your kids’behaviour? Fret not! In our Q & A column with acclaimed trainer, bestselling author and master motivational speaker, psychologist and counselor, Dr. Billy Kueek doles out answers to your parenting questions from his wealth of workshops, newsletters, journals and audiobooks, but most of all, from the standpoint of ordinary parents.

Hi Suzanne, According to a survey of 46 countries by international research company TNS last year, Malaysians have the most number of friends on social networking sites (an average of 233 friends on Facebook) and spend nine hours on social networking sites weekly. Indeed, social networking sites can be an addiction. More so if work and studies are affected. Thank you for sharing that you have tried different approaches so we can exclude them. As with most issues, you will require continuous coaching as you attempt our recommended approaches so we welcome you to make an appointment to come to the office or write to us with updates. Obsessions or addictions are usually cover-ups for something else that is missing in their lives. Instead of punishing, scolding or bribing, find the opportunity to have a heart-to-heart talk. Begin by expressing your love and concern for them, and then tell them your concern about this issue. Only do one issue at a time. After which, allow them to express themselves so you can better understand what vacuum are they each trying to fill. Only with an accurate diagnosis can you provide the right measure. Once you have discovered and understood their problems, then you will be able to deal with it accordingly. As mentioned, we can only assist up to this stage so we look forward to hearing from you again. To know more about Dr. Billy Kueek, visit www.billykueek.com/billy_kueek.html For answers to your parenting queries, email us at submit@kidz.my (Subject: Dear Kidz). 16

So much to discover, experience & learn at

Smart Kids 2011 Don’t miss this for the world! The country’s biggest and longest running kids’ education fair will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year and has lined up an interactive, fun and educational experience for all of its visitors! The Tropicana Smart Kids Twister Challenge is a chance for kids to work up a sweat via the fun game of Twister. They will get to turn, twist and contort their bodies in order to place their hands and legs into specific coloured circles. Smart Kids even holds the Malaysian Book of Records award for the largest group simultaneously playing Twister in Malaysia – what an outstanding feat!

Festival Fiesta: Celebrating The World – the theme for this year’s event - will present a mini global village where visitors can learn about the different festivals, cultures and customs around the world. From special outfits worn to how these special festivals are celebrated, Smart Kids 2011 is sure to leave kids with a greater appreciation for the cultures of the world. The Smart Kids philosophy has always been about bringing the best of education to both kids and parents. In line with that, tons of activities have been organised that will ensure that children are kept occupied. The games and events will be sure to challenge their intellect, stimulate their learning ability as well as develop their physical growth and agility. Make sure to join in the fun with the Smart Kids Talent Quest, Tropicana Smart Kids Twister Challenge, MELTA Smart Kids Way With Words and Super Smart Kids Children’s Fashion Contest! The renowned Smart Kids Talent Quest is one of the country’s major talent shows for kindergarten and primary school children. Groups work together under the instruction of their teachers to script and choreograph performances to wow and delight the audiences. These shows are testimony to the power of teamwork and putting in effort to achieve results – essential elements that children need to learn in order to pursue their passion and succeed.

As a way to encourage the use and understanding of English, MELTA Smart Kids Way With Words puts a spin on popular Spelling Bee competitions. Taking it one step further, not only do contestants need to correctly spell a word, they will also have to demonstrate their understanding of the word by making a sentence with it. Now that’s a fun challenge! The theme for the Super Smart Kids Children’s Fashion Contest is ‘World Festivals’. This will see kids transforming their imagination and favourite cultural costumes into wearable fashion designs and sharing their design idea with the crowd. The aim of the contest is to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and creative skills, so let’s see how imaginative kids can be! While the young ones have fun playing and learning, Smart Kids 2011 is the perfect way for parents to discover and decide on their children’s educational needs by speaking to schools, learning about different programmes and finding out which educational activities are suitable. The Education Enrollment Pool is one of the trademarks of this year’s event. This new, dedicated area is specially designed with conducive conversation and interaction in mind and is situated in a low-noise hall. Catering specifically to parents, they will be able to thoroughly research and discover the perfect kindergarten, childcare centre or pre-school that will suit all of their children’s learning needs.

Smart Kids 2011 will be held at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur on 15th – 17th April (Friday – Sunday). Entrance is FREE for children 16 years old and below. For more info, visit www.smartkids.com.my July-August 2010

Billy : Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapeutic technique. Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a symptom or issue and works on adults and children. Not all conditions require medication and more often than not, it is preferable to use hypnotherapy than pills.

Billy : Where your child is suffering from worries, phobias, anxiety or even exam stress, these can be readily addressed using hypnosis. With the pressures of growing up in the 21st century, we have seen more and more children struggling with such disorders. Hypnotherapy offers a great solution where you know that your child will not be reliant on medication, drugs or pills.

SK : At what age can you start hypnotherapy? Billy : It has been found that hypnosis works well with children starting from the age of seven, though there is no age limit. With babies, playing classical music has been found to have a calming effect, and this is a form of hypnosis.

SK : So hypnotherapy is for everybody? Billy : I would say that hypnotherapy can be used to help those with non-medical conditions. However, I would like to stress that ethically, the client must give permission, and that extends to children. I would seek the permission of the child before I work with him or her.

Other issues such as bedwetting, thumb-sucking, poor eating habits and low self-esteem are easily addressed using hypnosis. Hypnotherapy has also had great success for addicts.

SK : How do I find a good hypnotherapist? Billy : The first thing you should find out is what qualification the hypnotherapist has. There are a number of established and recognised associations which you can check on the internet. Verify their credentials and certifications to ensure that the hypnotherapist is properly certified. What astounds me is when clients tell me that some ‘hypnotherapists’ they have met would not tell them who certified them or which association they are affiliated with! We have a pool of hypnotherapists available around Malaysia and Singapore whom we can refer clients to. They are all certified by the American Board of Hypnotherapy, one of the world’s largest certifying bodies.

Billy Kueek International will be organising a Well Being Hypnotherapy session for children on Sunday, 29th May 2011. Limited seats available. For more information kindly call 012-434 9500 or email kit@BillyKueek.com 18

Stammering – Can NLP or Hypnotherapy help? Do you get annoyed when someone who is talking to you stammers and stutters and you have problems understanding what he or she is trying to say? Imagine how much more frustrating it must be for that person who has to face this problem every day of his or her life - the frustration of not being able to say what you want, quickly and easily. What could be worse than knowing what you want to say and not able to say it in order to express yourself? Yet stammering is not the fault of the person. The fact is, modern science still has not understood what causes some people to stammer. Stammering can take different forms. There are those who need to repeat a syllable or word a few times before they can complete the sentence. Others only have problems with selected words, letters or sounds. Then there are those who have problems starting their statements such that when they want to speak, their minds suddenly go blank. Even more intriguing is the fact that different people develop stammering or stuttering at different points in their lives. Some stammer from the moment they learn to talk, while others only start doing so when they reach adulthood. Yet others may stammer while they are young and then suddenly, without reason, they stop stammering altogether. Luckily, help is available. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnotherapy have been known to help people stop stammering. Although we do not know the exact cause of the problem, it usually involves negative emotions such as nervousness and fear of speaking. Using NLP techniques, we are able to find the root cause of the problem and address it. NLP can also be used to help people to stop over-analysing words and to simply speak without over-thinking what they are going to say. Isn’t it strange that even stammerers do not stammer when they are singing? With the help of hypnosis, stammerers would be more relaxed and less anxious before they speak, hence they would be less likely to stammer or stutter. When combined with voice training and breathing exercises, it is possible to achieve high levels of success, even where traditional speech therapy may have failed previously.

Coaching for Children The age-old question of nature or nurture has been debated ad infinitum with no real conclusion. Is it the environment that determines our success or is it hereditary? Are some of us born brilliant while others are destined to a life of mediocrity? Children are amazing. They are intuitive and instinctive, creative and full of imagination. They are innocent, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are able to learn quickly and mimic others and they are full of fun, laughter and love. It is our job to help them reach their full potential and create magic. Every child has the potential to excel yet only some will do so. This is most likely due to the environment the child has been brought up in, the support and encouragement the child receives and the child’s own beliefs in his ability to excel. Help them deal with issues such as managing emotions (including anger), overcoming negative issues, changing and managing their behaviour and be able to articulate their emotions better. Children will develop a deeper sense of personal empowerment as they learn to trust their intuition and become more positive as well as more motivated. If you are looking for ways to reach out to your child and support him on his journey of transformation and selfdiscovery, then talk to a Coach who is trained to work with children. Many children suffer from low self-esteem as they are surrounded by negativity. As a result of this, often they don’t even bother to try to excel as they feel they will not be able to succeed. A Coach can help them see things from a new perspective and have a different view of themselves, thereby increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence. There are very few jobs more rewarding than working with children and seeing them achieve results, and guiding them as they embark on their journey in life. Get in touch with a Coach and help your kids realise their full potential.

“My son just won’t listen to me. I have tried to talk to him but he is so rebellious and starts answering back and then we end up in an argument!” “That girl of mine thinks she is old enough to make her own choices. She is only 11 years old. I only want to advise her. I am not the enemy.” Sounds familiar? One of the biggest problems faced by parents is how to communicate with their children. The art of communication is exactly that – an art. First of all, parents need to understand that communication is a two-way process. If you want to communicate with your children, you need to also listen to what they have to say. Respect their opinions. Communication is not just telling them what you have to say and then ignoring their opinions. Listening is a skill, especially listening effectively. Remember that your child is expressing himself when he is talking to you, so listen to the words he uses. For example, when he says, “I hate doing homework!”, the usual response for most parents would be to tell him off or scold and punish him. However, note that he did not say that he would not do his homework, but merely expressed his emotion – that he hated doing it. When you hear such a statement, build empathy with your child by saying something like, “I know. When I was about your age, I hated doing homework too. It was so annoying because I wanted to go outside to play instead of doing boring homework.” In this way, you are acknowledging your child’s feelings and supporting him. Then after that you can further elaborate on the importance of homework and why it is necessary to do it. This way, you do not appear judgmental or critical towards your child and are actually telling him that it is alright to feel that way. Next step is to build rapport with your child. Step into his world and build a sense of trust with him. He has to be comfortable with you and open to what you have to say so that he is more likely to accept your comments and be in agreement. When talking to your child, use similar tones and even match their gestures and facial expressions. Also, be at the same level as your child - meaning if your child is sitting, you should also be sitting so that you are at the same eye-level. Remember how you hated to be lectured by your parents when you were a child? Then avoid lecturing your children. They want guidance rather than be told what to do. They want advice, not instructions. So as parents, do you want to instruct and order your children around, or do you want to truly communicate with them? The choice is yours.

Developing Self-Esteem in Children Self-esteem is a feeling of self worth or ‘good feeling’ about oneself. Children often judge this by how they are accepted and praised by peers and adults who are important to them. Developing a healthy sense of self-esteem in children is one of the biggest challenges parents face.

P

Developing a sense of self-esteem One of the most effective ways to foster positive self-esteem is to help children develop an ‘I can’ mentality. Parents can do this in a number of ways: ► Encourage children to be independent as well as work co-operatively with others ► Provide activities where children can achieve success ► Provide opportunities that are challenging yet not too complex ► Provide opportunities for children to practise skills that they enjoy or are good at ► Offer children the chance to express their ideas and feelings ► Offer real challenges where children feel they have really

achieved something

► Praise effort as well as accomplishments Children need to feel that they are respected in order to feel positive about themselves. Parents can do this by allowing children to make certain decisions and also explaining the reasons behind adult decisions or rules. Children should also be included in conversations and have their views taken seriously. Reading and sharing books together, discussing what is happening at school in a positive manner and inquiring about how kids are feeling are all key ways that parents can reinforce their children’s sense of self worth. Parents can help to build self-esteem by reassuring kids that their support is still there and will not waver. They should help children cope with failure rather than merely emphasising their successes and achievements. Children need to be aware that life has both showers and sunshine so that they can cope with crises. A parent making a positive statement in the morning can make the difference between a great day and a bad day for a child. However do be careful not to overdo it, as children will become dismissive of excessive flattery. For example, be specific with praise by saying ‘Well done for writing all your letters so beautifully’ or ‘You knew so many of the words in that book’ rather than the less meaningful ‘Good job’. Similarly negative statements such as, ‘Your work is so untidy’ or ‘You got such low marks’ are of no value and should be avoided. 22

ositive self-esteem enables children to face challenges, work co-operatively and successfully reach their goals. Children who have a positive sense of self worth tend to focus on the good things in life and not failure or problems.

Critical comments should show understanding of a child’s effort and offer constructive ideas for future success. For example a statement such as ‘I think you tried really hard with that test, maybe if you read a little more you might do even better next time’ shows children that you are aware of the effort they have made and that you believe in them. Parents play a crucial role in laying a solid foundation for a child’s sense of self worth. It is important to think about the impact that your words can have on an impressionable child. Acknowledge and focus on what your children can do rather than what they cannot and make them feel good about themselves. Swimming Lessons

& Safety

What is a good age for kids to learn how to swim? Most children enjoy the water and playing in it, especially when accompanied by their parents. While children can learn how to swim at any age, some feel that it is best to start at an early age so that swimming becomes second nature to them. Infants and toddlers will certainly enjoy a dip in the pool as they normally show no fear of the water. For formal swimming lessons, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation is for children to start taking classes at four years old. This is the age that kids are thought to be 'developmentally ready' for swim lessons. If kids start at a later age, some of them may initially feel a bit uneasy. However with gentle persuasion and positive encouragement, they can usually learn to enjoy swimming and playing in the water.

Swimming safety Children are naturally inquisitive and may simply leap into the water before they know how to swim well.

So although swimming is a great way for kids to exercise while having fun, parents need to ensure safety when introducing them to the water. Do keep in mind that swimming lessons do not ‘drown proof’ children. Statistically, most drownings in younger children occur in the child's home pool, and most of them were left unsupervised for less than five minutes. Therefore adult supervision should be enforced at all times and children should never swim alone, regardless of whether or not the children know how to swim. Kids must also learn about pool rules and these should be strictly enforced.

A budding actress on the rise! Apart from being a student of Ramli Ibrahim's classical Indian dance since she was seven, Siti Hara Rashid loves being under the sea so much that she became a qualified diver at 10 years old. More notably, Hara is also a figure skater who represented Malaysia in numerous competitions and won medals. As a result of one of her more recent adventures, this active youth can now add ‘actress’ to her list of achievements! Waktu Rehat is a school sitcom featuring an ensemble of ten Malaysian lower secondary school kids who talk about their lives while hanging out in the hallway during breaks. Each five-minute episode is filled with comedy derived from the friendships between the characters in the midst of normal school life situations. Broadcast in Bahasa Malaysia with English subtitles, Waktu Rehat is based on a Disney Channel short-form series in Italy entitled Quelli dell’Intervallo (As the Bell Rings). Set in a school corridor of fictional school Sekolah Menengah Jalan Mas, it is seen through a window as students chat and meet friends during their break times at school. Since the launch of the first season on Merdeka Day last year, the show has reached more than two million Astro viewers! It seems that the kids in Malaysia just cannot get enough of this show. Many have also watched episodes online on the Disney Channel Asia YouTube Channel (http:// www.youtube.com/user/disneychannelasia). In fact, kids viewed them so often during that period that the ten most watched videos were all Waktu Rehat episodes! Due to this unparalleled response online, more webisodes, behind-the-scenes footage and exciting activities of the sitcom were produced, all of which can be found at www.wakturehat.com. Another online initiative that received overwhelming response was the nationwide Waktu Rehat…Aksi! contest organised last year. To take part, kids between seven to 15 years old were asked to send in a twominute video of themselves acting as one of the stars in the sitcom. Over 600 video entries were submitted by the closing date of 10th October 2010, and that is how 12-year-old Siti Hara Rashid from Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Mary bested 15 finalists for a cameo role in a Waktu Rehat episode this new season! Hara, as she is affectionately known, loves her mother’s cooking (“especially sambal petai!”), Oreo milkshakes and the colours of the rainbows. Her favourite cartoon character is Kick Buttowski (on Disney Channel) because “he is funny and awesome… and Kick reminds me of my little brother!” “My little brother (Reyaz Rashid) was the one who got me interested in the contest”, explained Hara. “He was always talking about his girlfriend named Amirah. The whole family thought it was a girl from school until one day, he got me to watch Waktu Rehat and showed me his ‘girlfriend’ on screen. I couldn’t help laughing! Then he asked me to participate in the contest and a few days after that, my teacher told me about the contest and asked me to join.

“So, because of my little brother and the teacher’s encouragement, I finally decided to participate but didn't tell my parents about it. I went for the audition, and thought that the other students were much better than I was, so I didn't put high hopes on qualifying. However I did qualify and it was the most surprising news ever! I was so happy and shocked at the same time!” After informing her parents about the great news, they encouraged Hara to continue competing and she has not regretted it since. Although Hara has done a lot of auditions in school (such as for Malay classical dances, theatre and singing), she has never learned acting before. “My parents always ask me to try something new, and so I auditioned because I wanted to have fun and to spend time with my friends. I did not even think of winning because some of my friends have some basic acting skills and they are very good. So, the competition was quite tense!” Nevertheless, she persevered, had a great time and did her best during the audition. “It was the best experience ever! I've never dreamed of being in front of cameras or being on TV. So being a part of the Waktu Rehat audition was an absolute thumbs-up! I didn't have any interest in acting before but after this competition, I discovered that I love it! I'm planning to make it my profession.” Hara goes on to explain, “As soon as the director says ‘Action!’ the first thing that comes to my mind is my family and friends; I try to do my best and make them proud. I watch TV and movies to observe how others act and I try to do the same but make it my own (natural) way. Everybody supports me - my family and my friends. They always tell me: ‘Do what you want. Nobody and nothing is standing in your way.’ They support me in every single way.” For children to excel, it is important that parents not only nurture them but support all their endevaours as well. Plus, it is important to understand that triumphs as well as failures can stimulate youths to work harder, just as Hara has realised. When asked to offer some words of encouragement to other young aspiring actors and performers, Hara had this to say, “Do what you want to do. Don’t do something just because you are asked to do it. Have fun with everything that you are doing and try your best!” Catch Hara’s special guest appearance in Waktu Rehat Season 2, premiering on Disney Channel (ASTRO Channel 615) in March 2011! The series will air every Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon.
