“I don’t much care where…” said Alice. “Well then it doesn’t really matter which way you walk,” said the Cat. “…so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added. “Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.” (From Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll) We are all going somewhere but often times we may not be sure where we are heading or if we are even going in the right direction. Do we even know where we want to go? Of course, if we walk long enough, we will get somewhere, but that somewhere really is nowhere if it is not where we wanted to get to. At this stage of your life, for the work and effort that you have put in, with the knowledge you have acquired and the experiences you have gained, are you somewhere? Have you achieved the results you wanted? For some of us the answer is probably not. Why? Because we did not know what was the result we wanted in the first place. Since this is the beginning of a new year, take some time, find yourself a quiet corner with pen and paper. Think about what you would like to achieve this year and how you plan to get there. Putting your feelings and plans down on ink will solidify your thoughts and secure those goals in your mind. Do write in the positive in order to attract your wishes rather than repel them. (For example, jot down that you will eat more healthily and exercise more, rather than how you will not get fat in 2011.) Just as important are the details. The more specific they are, the more concrete they will be in your mind, and the more resourceful you will be in attaining those goals. So write down all your thoughts, vocalise those affirmations and repeat them to yourself everyday!

Speak Up

Don't suppress it, express it!

Sometimes I am disheartened by the things I see around me and the news I read. It seems that there is too much gloom and doom in the world. Then the festive season will come around and I see a whole different side to people. Everyone is so much more forgiving, thankful and kind. Then I realise that everyone is capable of being cruel as much as they are capable of being compassionate. The choice is ours to make, and I hope that in 2011, every one of us will choose wisely.

Very soon (in about one month) I will welcome another member to my family. My baby girl will brings lots of joy to my husband who really wants another princess to pamper and love to bits. To my darling Anthony, your wish is fulfilled!

I recently became a firsttime dad and I’m very excited! Helping to deliver a new life into this world is such a magical feeling. I have never been so super happy before, and I’m always full of energy. I feel that nothing in this world can even dampen my mood or make me upset. When I look at my son, all my stress melts away. I am glad to join the ‘parent club’ and to all guys out there – it’s not so bad to be married, it can actually be fantastic!

Happy New Year and Happy Chinese New Year to all my friends, family and relatives. Don’t forget my ang pows everyone! Nathan, 8 years old

As I grow one year older in 2011, I will wish for peace on Earth, happiness for everyone and an awesome 18th birthday party for myself!

For the new year, I wish that all parents will love their kids even more and cherish the little precious ones. There are too many cases of parents dumping their kids or neglecting them. No matter how naughty they are or how angry parents get, calm down and be thankful that your family is healthy and everyone is happy together. Remember what is important to you.

Manhood for Amateurs

Hetty Feather

Author : Michael Chabon Price : RM44.90

Author : Jacqueline Wilson Price : RM29.90 Reading level : 8 – 12 years old

Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and The Yiddish Policemen's Union, offers his first major work of non-fiction, an autobiographical narrative as inventive, beautiful and powerful as his novels. Manhood for Amateurs is the first sustained work of personal writing from Michael Chabon. In these insightful, provocative, slyly interlinked essays, one of our most brilliant and humane writers presents his autobiography and vision of life in the way so many of us experience our own: as a series of reflections, regrets and re-examinations, each sparked by an encounter, in the present, that holds some legacy of the past. What does it mean to be a man today? Chabon invokes, interprets and struggles to reinvent for us the personal and family history that haunts him even as it goes on being written every day. As a son, a husband, and above all as a father of four young children, Chabon's memories of childhood, of his parents' marriage and divorce, of moments of painful adolescent comedy and giddy encounters of his own youth, are like a theme played by the mad quartet of which he now finds himself coconductor. Dazzling, hilarious and moving, Manhood for Amateurs is destined to become a classic.

Set in Victorian times and featuring a brand new feisty heroine, Hetty Feather, this is a Tracy Beaker-esque tale that will thrill young readers. London, 1876 and Hetty Feather is just a tiny baby when her mother leaves her at the Foundling Hospital. The Hospital cares for abandoned children – but Hetty must first live with a foster family until she is big enough to go to school. Life in the countryside is hard but with her ‘brothers’ Jem and Gideon, she helps in the fields and plays imaginary games. Together they sneak off to visit the travelling circus and Hetty is mesmerised by the show, especially Madame Adeline and her performing horses. Hetty’s happiness is threatened once more when she is returned to the Foundling Hospital. The new life of awful uniforms and terrible food is a struggle for her, but now she has the chance to find her real mother. Could she really be the wonderful Madame Adeline? Or will Hetty find the truth is even more surprising?

For the Love of a Son One Afghan Woman’s Quest for Her Stolen Child Author : Jean Sasson Price : RM36.90 Set against a landscape littered with tragic tales of horrific suffering, Jean Sasson, author of Princess, chronicles the story of one resolute but tormented woman determined to achieve freedom and equality with men. From the time she was a little girl, Maryam rebelled against the terrible second-class existence that was her destiny as an Afghan woman. She had witnessed the miserable fate of her grandmother and three aunts, and wished she had been born a boy. As a feisty teenager in Kabul, she was outraged when the Russians invaded her country. After she made a public show of defiance, she had to flee the country for her life. A new life of freedom seemed within her grasp, but her father arranged a traditional marriage to a fellow Afghan, who turned out to be a violent man. Beaten, raped and abused, Maryam found joy in the birth of a baby son. But then her brutal husband stole him away far beyond his mother’s reach. For many long years she searched for her lost son, while civil war and Taliban oppression raged back home in Afghanistan.

Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart Baby from Zero to Five Author : John Medina Price : RM99.90 What's the single most important thing you can do during pregnancy? What's the best way to handle temper tantrums? In his New York Times bestseller Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina showed us how our brains really work - and why we ought to redesign our workplaces and schools. Now, in Brain Rules for Baby, he shares what the latest science says about how to raise smart and happy children. Just one of the surprises: The best way to get your children into the college of their choice? Teach them impulse control. Through fascinating and funny stories, Medina (who is a developmental molecular biologist and a dad) unravels how a child's brain develops and what parents can do to optimise it. You will view your children - and how to raise them - in a whole new light. Learn about: • Where nature ends and nurture begins. • Why men should do more household chores. • What you do when emotions run hot affects how your child turns out. • TV is harmful for children under two years old. • Your child's ability to relate to others predicts her future math performance. • Smart and happy are inseparable. Pursuing your child's intellectual success at the expense of his happiness achieves neither. • Praising effort is better than praising intelligence. • The best predictor of academic performance is not IQ. It is self control. What you do right now - before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and through the first five years - will affect your children for the rest of their lives. Brain Rules for Baby is an indispensable guide.

You ask, we gather the answers!

Dear Kidz

Tearing your hair out in response to your kids’ behaviour? Fret not! In our Q & A column with acclaimed trainer, bestselling author and master motivational speaker, psychologist and counselor, Dr. Billy Kueek doles out answers to your parenting questions from his wealth of workshops, newsletters, journals and audiobooks, but most of all, from the standpoint of ordinary parents. I don’t understand my fiancé. We have been dating for three years and recently he proposed so we got engaged. I think we are really meant for each other. He is very open and honest with me. We always share our hopes and dreams. But now that we are getting married soon, I discover that he is not so open or ‘revealing’ about certain things. If I ask him when will we have kids or how many he wants, and his dreams about our future, he will just shrug and say “we will see”. Or if I ask him what sort of wedding he wants or what he wants to do on that special day, he doesn’t want to discuss it. When I pressure him, he tells me that it is not a must that we share everything with each other. I was shocked! I know he loves me a lot and I know he is not hiding any ‘bad secrets’ from me. But I don’t understand his behaviour. I thought being a couple means you share and experience everything together. Why does he suddenly feel this need for privacy? I feel like he doesn’t really want me 100% in his life? Does this mean that we’re not meant to be? Am I being paranoid? -- Anonymous

Did You Know?

Clean Toothbrush, Clean Teeth! The toothbrush plays an important role in maintaining our oral hygiene by removing plaque and bacteria, keeping our pearly-whites clean and sparkling as we brush our teeth every day.

7 Tips to Keep Your Toothbrush Clean Sometimes it is easy to overlook the hygiene and care of the toothbrush itself. Invisible germs and bacteria – including those that cause infections like gum diseases and gingivitis – thrive in high-humidity areas like the bathroom. So if we are not careful with how we use them, we risk turning our toothbrushes from a cleaning tool into a contaminated host where germs grow. To keep your toothbrush clean, follow these 7 simple tips: 1) Never share your toothbrushes. Sharing toothbrushes increases the risk of infections, as body fluids and germs can easily transfer from one family member to another. This is especially important for people with infectious diseases or reduced immunity (e.g. the young or the sick). 2) Avoid toothbrush-toothbrush contact. Many families store their toothbrushes together (for example in a cup, on the basin or huddled together in a cabinet). This can cause bacterial cross-contamination, as the germs from one family member passes onto another via the toothbrush. 3) Keep toothbrushes away from the toilet. Close the toilet lid before flushing. While flushing, droplets of contaminated water floats into the surrounding areas, and may land on counter-tops and sinks. Dentists recommend a minimum of six feet distance between a toothbrush and the toilet. An even better solution is to close the toilet lid before flushing. 4) Store your toothbrushes in an upright position. Keeping your toothbrushes upright in a well-ventilated area makes it easier for excess water droplets to drain off, so that the toothbrush can stay dry and clean.

16

January – February 2011

5) Rinse thoroughly after every brush. Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after brushing to ensure that toothpaste, bacteria and small food particles are washed off. However, there is no need to soak the toothbrushes in mouthwash or disinfecting solutions. In fact, this may even increase cross-contamination if the same disinfectant is used multiple times. 6) Use a toothbrush cover. Howard Glazer, spokesman for Academy for General Dentistry, recommends the use of a toothbrush cover as it effectively protects the toothbrush from various elements - splattering water, skin contact and contact with other toothbrushes. 7) Replace your toothbrushes regularly. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months (or when the bristles appear worn) to ensure maximum effectiveness in cleaning. Children’s toothbrushes should be changed more often as they wear out quicker. Remember to wash your new toothbrushes before use! Take care of your toothbrush, and your toothbrush will take care of you! Reference: American Dental Association (ADA) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention British Dental Association (BDA)

A Coaching Program That Will Help You Break Out Break Through Break Free Without Passion, Life is only Motion! The above abo phrase is one of many coined by Dr Billy Kueek, International Motivational Speaker, Master Trainer and Founder of Impact System© Coaching. This revolutionary programme is the product of his many years of experience in coaching, speaking, training as well as mentoring groups and individuals in over 40 countries. Just like how he has helped hundreds and thousands of people achieve breakthroughs to unleash potential and fully live their dreams, Dr Billy’s coaching programme will move you from their po success to significance.

Why Coaching? What is it you are not doing that you yo want to do? What is it you are not having that you y want to have? Who is it you are not being that you want to be? What is it you are not achieving that you want to achieve? If you are seeking the answer to any of the above questions, then like other successful individuals out there, you should consider coaching. Many top athletes like Andre Agassi and Tiger Woods have coaches, as do legendary singers such as Michael Jackson and Celine Dion. Even U.S. Presidents and prominent business leaders engage coaches. If coaching helped them achieve the success they did, shouldn’t you consider it too? Coaching is the key to help you break out from the mediocrity that many are prepared to accept rather than attain the excellence that they were destined to reach. Breakthrough that hidden barrier to discover the person you are meant to be, to do the things you really want to do and to have the things you really want to have.

Timothy was a happy, active ten-year-old boy. He loved playing with his younger brother, Joe, and both of them spent many happy hours running around the house. Timothy was also an avid reader, he loved books and read everything he could get his hands on. However, this led to an overactive imagination, to the extent where Timothy imagined that there were sea monsters and other creatures in the bathroom, coming out of the plughole.

The issues Bath times were a challenge as Timothy refused to get into the bath. Instead, he would stand outside the tub and bathe with the extended shower hose. His fear of water creatures also meant that swimming was a no-go. He imagined that there would be something in the pool and therefore, only ventured into the children’s wading pool.

Apart from the overactive imagination, his mother also discovered that Timothy had an anger management issue, flaring into a rage whenever he got frustrated with his classmates or even in the midst of playing computer games.

Seeking the help of an Impact System© Coach His parents realised that this was not a healthy situation for their son and sought the help of a coach. The Impact System© Coach met up with Timothy and his parents to understand the extent of the problem. After the initial meeting, the coach arranged for a follow-up session. Using hypnosis, she was able to help Timothy overcome his fear of monsters and other imaginative creations. She also coached him to resolve his anger that was usually unwarranted. Of course, he would still get angry if the situation warranted it, just that he would not become enraged at the slightest provocation.

Six months later Six months on, Timothy is a much happier child who goes swimming every week with his parents. In fact, is one of the best swimmers in his group! As for bath time, he now looks forward to getting into the shower.

What is Hypnosis or Trance? Hypnosis is a method of communication that induces a trance or a trance-like state. Trance is a naturally occurring state in which one's attention is narrowly focused and relatively free of distractions. The attention may be focused either internally (on thoughts - internal selftalk or images, or both) or externally (for example on a task, book, or movie). The focus of attention is so narrow that other stimuli in the environment are ignored or blocked out of conscious awareness for a time. Examples of trance states are daydreaming or when you are completely engrossed while watching a movie. Hypnotic suggestions can influence behaviour when the client: 1) is relaxed, receptive and open to the suggestions. 2) experiences visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic representations of the suggestions. 3) anticipates and envisions that these suggestions will result in future outcomes. These three criteria are facilitated through the use of hypnotic language patterns. Hypnotic language patterns include: guided visualisation, stories, guided memories, analogies, ambiguous words or phrases, repetition, and statements about association, meaning, and cause-effect. Myths & Misconceptions about Hypnosis Hypnosis is not mind control or brainwashing. People change their minds and actions throughout their lives. When such changes occur as a result of exposure to specific information, it is because this information has been presented through persuasion and influence. A hypnotherapist uses communicative methods of persuasion and influence; as do people who advertise and market goods or services, and so do teachers, politicians, lawyers, entertainers, parents, and just about anyone you can think of. During trance, you are not immobilised. You know exactly where you are the entire time. You can adjust your position, scratch, sneeze, and even cough. You can open your eyes and bring yourself out of trance at any time you wish to do so. During trance, you can still hear sounds around you, like a phone ringing. You can alert yourself and respond

to any situation that needs your immediate attention. You remain oriented as to person, place, and time. You can even hold a conversation in trance. You are in total control of yourself. Trance is not sleep, although there are those who get so relaxed during trance that they fall asleep. This is not a problem because some part of the mind continues to listen to the voice of the hypnotherapist. In trance, sleeping subjects can still follow instructions such as moving a finger, taking a deep breath, or awakening themselves when they are told to do so. There is no ‘right’ way to experience trance. One person may experience it as a deep, restful feeling, while another may experience it as a light, floating sensation. Some people hear every word spoken by the therapist, while others allow their minds to drift to other thoughts. Some experience vivid imagery, while others do not. Some people remember the suggestions they hear, and some are unable to recall. Every person's experience of hypnosis is unique. Hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do something against their will or that contradicts with their values. First, a hypnotherapist is ethically required to make only those suggestions that support agreed-upon outcomes. Secondly, clients are not receptive to suggestions that go against their morals or values - because receptivity is one of the ingredients of success in hypnosis. Remember - hypnosis alone cannot solve every problem. Even with hypnosis, it may still be necessary for you to do some conscientious planning and research about the types of changes you want to achieve. You must still take action to get results. Hypnosis is not a cure-all. Hypnosis can be effective in many cases, yet there are no guarantees that hypnosis will work for you. Risks & Precautions Hypnosis carries very little risks. Hypnosis may be contraindicated for individuals with certain medical problems, for those who are actively abusing drugs or alcohol, or who are delusional or hallucinatory. Hypnosis should not be used for physical problems (such as pain), unless the client has first consulted a physician to determine underlying physical causes. Applications of Hypnotherapy Hypnosis has many applications in therapeutic settings, including: • Building Confidence • Stress Management • Academic Performance • Athletic Performance • Blocks to Motivation and Creativity • Weight Loss & Weight Management • Habit Control • Treating Phobias, Fears and Anxiety • Psychosomatic Complaints • Interpersonal Problems • Relaxation • Sleep Disorders Article contributed by Stephanie Lai.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) NLP is an innovative approach to understanding and appreciating human experience, communication and behaviour. It is known to help many people achieve breakthroughs in themselves, relationships, education, coaching, business and therapy. NLP is a great tool as it enables you to communicate effectively and persuasively, enhances your personal performance, gets rid of phobias as well as increases your sensitivity to self and others.

Time Line Therapy™ (TLT) Negative emotions – anger, sadness, fear, guilt – are a result of our past experiences. In order to rid past burdens and lead a more positive life, it is vital to know where did such emotions come from. TLT – an extremely powerful technique - helps you to do so, while letting you understand when did they start manifesting, and then rid these negative emotions from your life. With TLT you will also learn how to eliminate ‘baggage’ of the past and eradicate any limiting decisions. It is an excellent tool to enhance your probability of achieving your desired outcome as well.

Professional Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique based on the power of hypnosis, with amazing transformational power. Learning with Lorna Whiston

Learning Vocabulary (Part 2)

W

ords are powerful language tools. They can make or break relationships, and even start wars or settle disputes. Since thought is essentially inner speech (and speech is made up of words), words also determine the way children think, which in turn influences how they act. Hence the power of words, and the importance of having a wide vocabulary, is not to be under-valued.

It is through words that we convey information, impressions, images and expectations. Someone who describes their friend as ‘bossy’ is conveying a rather negative impression. If the same friend is described as ‘having leadership qualities’, the connotation is a more positive one (although the character trait is the same as being ‘bossy’). Having a wide vocabulary gives children the power to choose their words carefully, to convey ideas, thoughts and information accurately, and to create the impression they intend to give correctly. During their first five years, children are involved in acquiring a vocabulary that helps them make sense of the world around them. During this time, we teach children the meanings of words as we talk to them, play with them, and expose them to everyday experiences. Children of this age range have a strong desire as well as a real need to communicate. If a toddler wants some juice from the fridge, it is in her interest to learn and use the word ‘juice’ so that she will get what she wants. Early vocabulary development can be supported not just through talking and interacting with children, but also by reading to them. Books are full of words, and these words tend to be presented in lively and interesting contexts along with supporting pictures. What better way to broaden a child’s vocabulary? Whilst children begin developing a vocabulary for speaking and listening during their first five years, most acquire a vocabulary for reading and writing around the ages of five to six years old. Vocabulary plays an important part in learning to read. Children use words in their oral vocabulary to make sense of the words they see in print. Vocabulary is also important for reading comprehension. It is impossible for children to understand a text unless they understand what most of the words mean. Vocabulary instruction is an essential part of any good language programme. If a child has a wide vocabulary, she is much more likely to develop strong reading skills and enjoy academic success. The more conversation and reading experiences are a part of children’s learning, the more their vocabulary, and their interest in words, will grow.

Fun Swimming Pool To make Games for Kids swimming more

interesting for children, let’s find out about some cool games they can play in the water. Make exercise time a fun time!

What’s your favourite colour?

All players gather on one side of the pool. They then choose someone to become the ‘catcher’ who will swim to one side of the pool with his/ her back facing the other players. Each player has to think of a colour they like. Once done, the catcher will call out, “My favourite colour is ____.” The player(s) who chose that colour must swim across to the other side of the pool as quietly as possible. If the catcher hears anyone swimming, he has to turn around and catch the player(s) before they reach the other side.

Doughnut float race

Best played in long swimming pools, each player must have a doughnut float or a tube to sit in. Resembling a race, at the sound of a whistle or someone saying, “Ready, set, go!” kids will start swimming or pedalling across the length of the pool. The first one to reach will win the race!

Underwater treasure hunt

Great for large groups, kids are divided into two teams. Items such as coins, marbles and small toys (that will sink) are scattered across the bottom of the pool. A simple version of the game would be to see which team can dive down and grab the most items in a set time (two to five minutes). One way to make this game more interesting is to use different items in different quantities. Then an adult will shout out an item and how many of it they want collected (eg. “Bring me three coins!”). The first group to collect the object in the right quantity wins.

*Note: Choose items with no sharp or pointed edges.

Find the bottle

This is a sure-fire game to keep boredom at bay! Only one item is needed – a clear 1.5litre bottle with a cap that is white or the same colour as the swimming pool tiles. After removing any wrapper or stickers on the bottle, fill it with water. Kids are divided into two teams, with one on each end of the pool. With them facing away from the pool, an adult throws the bottle into the water. Then on the count of three, the teams turn around, jump into the pool and try to get the bottle first before the other team. Although it may sound simple, the game is very interesting because the bottle ‘blends in’ with the water and the pool and is actually quite difficult to locate. Try it yourself! Note: While having fun playing games, always remember to be safe and look out for each other. Adult supervision is recommended.
