On Writing & Procrastination Hiya! Welcome once again to another issue of Superkidz magazine. It was both an honour and a surprise when I was invited to be Guest Editor again. It’s a little hard to believe so much time has passed since the last time I was one (in the May-June 2008 issue). Time is a funny thing. Two years is a long time, enough for someone to change quite a bit. You might shoot up, or your voice might crack. Your interests may start to shift to different things. Sometimes, you look back and wonder, “Was that really me?” In the same way, Superkidz has changed too. In the past two years, this magazine has offered me many of the opportunities I had hoped for. I’ve had the chance to do a Kidz-Friendly review, some reporting, and be Guest Editor not once, but twice! It’s been a truly fun ride. Admittedly, though I enjoyed the writing aspect of it all, the freebies and perks were pretty awesome on their own! Hmm… writing. Two years ago, I gave readers advice to read a lot and I think it still applies. Writing takes practice, just like everything else. It’s good to take constructive criticism from other people when you’re unsure of something you just wrote. Sometimes you may want to give up because you’re not as good as the rest, but giving up does nothing for you. If you become unsure of what to write once you get started, find something that will bring you inspiration, be it music or even the works of others. At the end of the day, pick what works best for you. Don’t get out of your comfort zone until you’re ready. I believe that there are many of you out there who have the talent for writing but are afraid of sending in your work. Do not be afraid to send in what you have written. Trust me, I was once like many of you but I decided to brave it and take the challenge and it has been gratifying to see my writing in print. It was a task at first for me to pen something for this note, and I had taken quite some time to get down to business and find something to write about. Because of this I have decided to address the issue of procrastination. What is procrastination? Putting off or delaying an action to a later time. It is bad. It’s also more serious than it sounds. It starts off as you not knowing what to do, so you put it off. The more you put it off, the harder it is to write. So you put it off more and the cycle continues. Then other things start piling up on you and you’re just stuck.
In short: Stop procrastinating if you are in the habit of doing it and get on the job immediately. The faster you do something, the faster it’s over with! Phew. I hope that’s enough advice to last you guys a long time.

Speak Up
Don't suppress it, express it! No one is perfect, and no two persons are the same. So how come my mum keeps comparing me to our neighbour’s daughter? Why does she always try to make me feel inferior? That’s why I would rather talk to my dad sometimes.
Children don’t really need presents. What they need is to feel their parents’ presence in their lives. So remember that the next time they ask you to play with them.
Anonymous, sent via email
Annoyed, sent via email I love the fact that your magazine gets kids involved! My son loves to draw robots and dinosaurs, while my girl likes to write short stories about her make-believe ‘princess world’. ‘Parenting’ is not like the old days anymore. My parents believed in the old Chinese saying of ‘hit your children to show you love them’. I had my fair share of being whipped with the rotan! Although I don’t subject my kids to the same sort of punishment, I believe in tough love. So while their friends are spoiled with all the latest gadgets, my kids have to be obedient and show good behaviour in order for me to justify pampering them. I’m happy to say that they’ve turned out quite well! So I guess my advice to other parents is - don’t be afraid to be stern when your kids misbehave, and provide them with structure via setting some ground rules for them.
Mr Tang, father of two boys & one girl
So it’s great to know I can contribute their works of art to your magazine! Keep up the good work!
Cassandra, mum of Daniel (6) & Danielle (7)
My friends asked me to go on an island trip with them. When I asked my parents, they said no because they told me, “you cannot go skinny-dipping and binge drinking!” How did they even come up with that idea is beyond me! Give me a break man!

Since 2001, nations from different parts of the world celebrate World Milk Day together on the every year on 1st June. Each country has their own unique way of celebrating this special day but they all have one common goal, which is to create awareness about the importance and benefits of drinking milk.
lth ea
In 2008, Malaysia’s first ever World Milk Day celebration was led by Dutch Lady Malaysia. This year, Dutch Lady organised a twoday celebration on a grand scale and more than 250,000 packets of milk were given away! Held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 30th May, the most exciting part of the celebration was an attempt to set a Malaysia Book of Records for 'Most People Drinking Milk at the Same Time' with a target of 2,500 people. Studies have shown that the consumption of milk in Malaysia is very low. On average, Malaysians only drink milk once a week, which totals approximately 30 litres a year. Malaysians drink a staggering 70% less milk than those living in Western countries!
It is highly recommended to drink two glasses of milk each day. The many benefits of milk include: √ Source of energy - People who drink milk are likely to have a balanced and nutritious diet because milk contains an ideal mix of vital nutrients such as calcium, protein, carbohydrate, and Vitamin B2. Many people do not know that Vitamin B2 releases energy from protein, fats and carbohydrate. √ Good night’s sleep – Drinking milk can help one to feel more relaxed and also sleep better at night because it contains essential amino acids.
•
Milk comes in many different flavours such as chocolate, strawberry, banana, grape, vanilla and orange, so why not try a different flavour for each day of the week.
•
You can make your own milkshake at home by putting milk and your favourite ingredients into a blender and mixing them together.
Staying healthy has never been so easy and enjoyable. So get some milk and share its goodness with your friends and family today!
√ Beautiful skin – It is not widely known that by drinking milk, one is able to have beauty from within because of the ideal mix of essential nutrients contained in milk, especially protein and Vitamin A which helps maintain healthy skin.
√ Rich in calcium – Instead of drinking soft drinks, drink more milk. Why? Because milk provides a rich source of calcium which is good for our body. Besides that, calcium is an important source of nutrient that strengthens our bones and teeth.
Not only is drinking milk good for health, it can also be enjoyed in so many ways. Here are some tips to how you can enjoy milk: •
Pour cold milk into a bowl of cereal of your choice. Healthy as well as tasty!
•
Dip Oreo or any chocolate chip cookie into a glass of milk before popping it into your mouth!

Pasteurised shell eggs The most common cause of food poisoning from eating eggs is related to the improper handling of eggs. Normal eggs may contain the harmful bacteria Salmonella and the virus Avian Influenza that cause sickness such as fever, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Therefore, it is not advisable to eat soft-boiled eggs or fried eggs with runny yolks. The food processing company Safe Food Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (SCFM) has come up with a brilliant solution of introducing pasteurised shell eggs in Malaysia. Aptly named Safegg, the eggs are treated using the latest technology from Korea. The pasteurisation process involves the proper timing and regulation of temperature, without the use of chemicals, to eliminate harmful bacteria while retaining the taste, freshness and quality of eggs. During the process, the eggs are also coated with a protective layer of food-grade mineral oil to prevent cross-contamination and to keep the eggs fresher for longer. This results in eggs that are 99.99% bacteria free, extra clean and hygienic with a less ‘fishy’ smell, longer shelf life, and is safe to be consumed raw, runny and anyway you like it! The young and the elderly, pregnant mothers and those with weak immune systems can enjoy Safegg with peace of mind. Safegg is available at leading hypermarkets such as Jaya Jusco, Cold Storage, Mercato, Village Grocer and Jaya Grocer. It retails at RM5.99 (pack of 6) / RM7.99 (pack of 10). Give children a voice There are more than 50,000 children in Malaysia that have no form of documentation, and so are deprived of basic necessities such as healthcare and education. As a result, they are at a higher risk of being abused, kidnapped, trafficked or exploited. In an effort to eradicate this, the advocacy group Voice of the Children (VoC) was founded in 2008. Their mission is to campaign for and promote law and policy reform to ensure all children in Malaysia are protected and no longer at risk of violation. Their immediate goal is to help tackle the issue of stateless children. To raise funds for their mission, VoC recently launched two beautifully illustrated children’s story books that portray the harsh and horrid conditions that neglected, stateless/ un-documented children have to endure on a daily basis. The Dancing Bear tells the story of a bear who dances in the streets to earn money for his ‘bear master’, while Cats in the Rubbish is about a little cat called Nick. Nick is an orphan cat that lives in the rubbish dump with other stray cats. Funds raised will be utilised to help rollout VoC’s programmes, such as an initiative to reach out to affected children and conducting workshops for lawyers and/ or advocacy groups to create awareness on issues concerning children rights. The Dancing Bear and Cats in the Rubbish are both priced at RM35, and are available at Kinokuniya (KLCC). For more info on VoC, visit www.voc.org.my or email vocpublishing@gmail.com

"What kind of person do I want my child to be?" In spite of the overwhelming amount of information available on parenting advice, there is very little research-based advice on how to raise children to be well-rounded, achieve their full potential, help them learn to take on life's challenges, communicate well and remain committed to learning. These are the ‘essential life skills’ that Ellen Galinsky has spent her career pursuing, through her own studies and through talking with more than a hundred of the most outstanding researchers in child development and neuroscience. In Mind in the Making, Ellen Galinsky has grouped her research into seven critical areas that children need most: focus and self control; perspective taking; communicating; making connections; critical thinking; taking on challenges; and self-directed, engaged learning. Galinsky shows parents what the studies have proven and provides concrete methods that do not cost money to foster essential life skills in their children. Already acclaimed by such thought leaders as T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., David A. Hamburg, M.D., Adele Faber, and Judy Woodruff, Mind in the Making is destined to become a classic in the literature of parenting.

Grown Ups is a comedy about five best friends and former teammates who reunite 30 years later to honour the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. Picking up where they left off, they discover why growing older does not necessarily mean growing up! Lenny Feder (ADAM SANDLER) was once the ringleader-of-sorts among the kids. He was the one who could convince the others to do the silly things kids do. Now he’s grown up to be a wheeling, dealing Hollywood agent. His wife Roxanne (SALMA HAYEK), a glamorous fashion designer, is in for a culture shock when they arrive at the lake house! Lenny’s friend Eric Lamonsoff (KEVIN JAMES) is a nice guy who just wants to pretend he’s a little bit better than he is, but knows he can be himself around his buddies. Another pal Marcus Higgins (DAVID SPADE) is still a bachelor who loves to flirt with girls. However he soon realises that what was cool at 20 years old is not so cool anymore now that they are 40. So Marcus is jealous of his friends for the family that they have. While Kurt McKenzie (CHRIS ROCK) stays at home with his kids, his wife Deanne (MAYA RUDOLPH) is the breadwinner of the family. So Kurt has to take care of the household, which also includes Deanne’s mother, and that creates some tension in the family. The fifth friend, Rob Hilliard (ROB SCHNEIDER) is obsessed with certain things to avoid emotional issues in his life. Rob likes to give advice but hardly applies them to his own life.

Despicable Me is the story of one of the world’s greatest super-villains who meets his biggest challenge when three children enter his life. In a happy suburban neighbourhood sits an out-of-place black house with a dead lawn. What the neighbours do not know is that hidden deep beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by an army of mischievous little minions, Gru (STEVE CARELL) is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. Gru is on track to become the greatest villain of all time by committing the crime of the century. He is going to steal… the moon! Gru delights in all things evil and finds great pleasure in doing deliciously wicked things to other people. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. That is, until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
Good vs. Evil - Who’s Who in Gru’s World? While it is initially a bit uncertain who is naughty and who is nice in the movie, all will be revealed as the story unfolds. Below is a guide to some of the characters in Gru’s world: • Gru’s nemesis is the nerdy-yet-cocky Vector (JASON SEGEL) whose favourite weapon is a gun that fires live piranhas. Unfortunately for him, Vector has a hard time keeping the carnivores inside the gun’s barrel – ouch! • The eldest orphan Margo (MIRANDA COSGROVE) is naturally protective of her sisters and distrusts most people. Raised without a family, Margo is not afraid to challenge Gru as he tries to parent the girls. He has finally met his match. • The kid who tests all limits is Edith (DANA GAIER). Eager to test out Gru’s dangerous weaponry, she is seen as a bit of a scoundrel. • The youngest of the orphans is Agnes (ELSIE FISHER) who lives to hug, is obsessed with unicorns and says random, sweet things. She longs for nothing more than parents to make her family complete.
• Small, mischievous yellow creatures, the minions (PIERRE COFFIN, CHRIS RENAUD and JEMAINE CLEMENT) form Gru’s not-so-bright pit crew. Hardworking and devoted, the minions are content to serve as his crash test dummies. When they meet Gru’s adopted children, they find three little girls who are just as much fun as they are! • Miss Hattie (KRISTEN WIIG) runs the local orphanage where Margo, Edith and Agnes live before they are sent to live with Gru. A seemingly kind and concerned caretaker, Miss Hattie is actually quite stern and believes in tough love. • A cross between a bulldog and a piranha with the attitude to match, Kyle is Gru’s guard dog. The recipient of many unwelcome hugs by Agnes, Kyle isn’t sure whether he wants to swallow the little girls whole, or just cuddle up next to them!

Did You Know?
The Wonder of Eggs Eggs are enjoyed by people all over the world. That is because they are available everywhere and can be prepared in so many ways. For instance, there’s soft and hard boiled eggs, sunny side up, scrambled, omelette, and steamed eggs. It is easy to cook, delicious, affordable, rich in nutrients, and goes well with almost anything. It is also an important ingredient in many recipes for cakes, cookies, pancakes, pasta, sandwiches, ice-cream and waffles. Recent statistics recently show that an average Malaysian consumes about 305 eggs yearly. On a daily basis, Malaysians consume a total of 22 million eggs! That is a big amount compared to other countries. So there’s no denying that we really love eggs, but how much do we really know about this wonderful food?
Here are some fun and nutritional facts about eggs: ● Mexicans have the highest egg consumption – 345 eggs per person a year. ● The longest throw of a fresh egg without breaking it was 98.51 metres achieved in Texas, USA in 1978. ● Eggs contain one of the highest quality food proteins known. It is second only to mother’s milk for human nutrition. ● The average hen will lay an average of 300 to 325 eggs a year, taking 24 to 26 hours to produce a single egg. ● The older the hen, the larger the egg. ● To see if an egg is raw or boiled, spin it. A raw egg will wobble and a cooked egg will spin freely. ● Egg yolk is one of the few foods that contain Vitamin D. ● It is estimated that there are 4.93 billion egg-laying hens in the world. China is the world’s largest egg producer with approximately 20.25 million tonnes.
unmarried woman who is looking for clues to her future husband’s profession. A ship means marriage to a sailor, a shoe means she’ll wed a cobbler, and so on. ● Eggs can protect your eyesight. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two antioxidants found in eggs that may help to prevent macular degeneration, a leading cause of age-related blindness. ● Eggs give you energy. Just one egg contains enough Riboflavin to produce energy in all the cells of the body, Pantothenic Acid to break down food and assist body cells to produce energy and Phosphorus for healthy bones, teeth, cell membranes and energy production. It is important to know that eggs have a high risk of being contaminated by Salmonella, a bacterium that causes food poisoning with symptoms like fever, abdominal cramp, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and headache after consumption. Because of that, consuming raw or soft (half) boiled eggs is not recommended especially for infants, pregnant women, elderly people, and those with weak immune systems because an uncooked yolk might contain Salmonella. Also remember that eggs must be refrigerated at all times.
● Eggs will age more in one day at room temperature than they would do in a week if refrigerated. So keep them refrigerated! ● A fresh egg will sink in water while an older egg will float. ● All across Europe, eggs are used to tell fortunes. The most popular method is to carefully pierce the shell and catch drops of the egg white in a glass of water. The shapes that form in the water are examined and interpreted by an

Play with Confidence! Do your children always cling to you screaming every time you bring them to the pool? Are they unreasonably afraid of getting into the water for some aquatic fun time? Even if your children do not aspire to become Olympic gold medal swimmers, it is best that they learn about water safety and how to overcome their fear. Let’s look at how parents can help them develop the skill. • Don’t sweat it Children should not feel pressured to get into the pool if they are not yet ready to. Parents who force them to do so will only increase their anxiety level of learning to swim. Do not try to trick them into getting in either – this will only make children hate the water even more. Don’t feel frustrated if initially they are not willing to get in the pool. Not all kids will take to water naturally, so be patient when introducing them to swimming. Give them lots of praises and encouragement when they show signs of progress, no matter how minute. • Make it a regular activity Even if your children are not yet ready to get in the pool, it is a good idea to take them there often. This will get them familiarised with the place, the environment at the pool, its sounds and the idea of going swimming. For example, get them used to putting on a swimsuit, wearing goggles or playing with water toys. Sooner or later they will understand that water is ‘normal’ and safe, and thus gain the courage to get in to swim and play. • Identify the fear Younger children may be unable to properly express what it is that they are afraid of. Parents should observe them and try to deduce the reason(s) behind their fear of swimming. Are they afraid of the water, or are they intimidated by the huge, unfamiliar pool? Do they cling to you more when others approach them or when there are a lot of people around? By identifying the cause of the fear, parents will be able to find a more suitable solution. For example, if it’s a matter of the children being shy around large crowds, try to take them swimming when there are not many people around. Who knows? They might be more willing to jump in and splash around! Or if they refuse to submerge their heads in the water, perhaps your children simply don’t like water getting into their eyes. By getting a pair of goggles, you will help them get one step closer to loving to swim! • Lead by example If you are afraid of water yourself, perhaps the children are picking up on your reluctance of getting in the pool. So set a good example; enrol for swimming classes so you can show your kids there is nothing to it. Better yet, sign up as a family and learn swimming together. Double the people, double the fun!

Education
Eye-Level Starting Point
All parents want to give their children an edge in life. More often than not, this means providing the kids with a complete education to better equip them for life. In addition to the standard education provided by schools, many parents have also opted to send their children for tuition classes and extracurricular activities. One of the subjects that parents want their children to excel in is mathematics, which is important both in school and in life.
Mathematics is undoubtedly an academic subject that requires a thorough comprehension of the formulas and their applications. In school, children are expected to keep pace with the teachers and their classmates. Those who lag behind struggle to catch up with the lessons, and this slowly widens the children’s learning gap in terms of skills and knowledge. This can make them despondent and lose motivation to continue learning math. Sometimes when parents enrol their children for the first time at E.nopi MATH centres, they are shocked by what appears to be a rather low starting point or entry level for their children. Parents make comments such as “my child should be able to do this”, “he’s much better than that; he can solve much harder math problems than that”, or “… but the work he’s doing at school is much more complicated than this”. These statements are not wrong; they are simply not a true indication of a child’s ability when he or she joins E.nopi MATH. Our Eye-Level Starting Point is designed to ensure that each child’s initial study with E.nopi MATH is easy and smooth. They have time to develop confidence and self-esteem and, most importantly, the regular habit of consistent studying. Most children who start lessons, regardless of their cultural or academic backgrounds, are unaccustomed to the daily regime of work that is required at E.nopi MATH. It is quite impossible to develop a positive approach if the lesson is too difficult, too long or too challenging. Another reason for this easy starting point is to give children ‘momentum’ in the programme. It is a bit like riding a bicycle down a hill. If you start at
the top of the hill you can free-wheel all the way. If you start at the bottom of the hill, you have to start pedalling immediately to go up. We want to ensure our E.nopi MATH students can build up their momentum and freewheel for as long as possible. The effectiveness of E.nopi MATH programmes is not only observed by parents and teachers who notice marked improvement in children’s math abilities. New York State University conducted a 12-month research study on E.nopi MATH students. Not only did the results show a noticeable improvement in their math skills and logical reasoning ability over that time, they also recorded an increased interest in maths on the part of the students. As educational professionals have stated time and time again, students do best in a subject that they have a genuine interest in learning. Not only that, E.nopi MATH is also recognised by NCTM, the world’s largest maths organisation dedicated to improving mathematics teaching and learning. Another way that E.nopi MATH captures students’ imagination is through its colourful and engaging learning materials. It looks at learning from a child’s point of view, so concept comics, a thinker’s corner, puzzles, mirrors and other innovative, attractive learning tools are used to make each maths session fun for the students. By allowing children to progress at their own pace, E.nopi MATH instructors help the students build up their self-confidence, which in turn inspires them to tackle even more challenging maths problems on their own. The sense of pride and excitement children feel when they reach that next level of knowledge is priceless and will stay with them forever.

Learning with Lorna Whiston
In Focus
Foundation for Writing (Part 1) In this article, Mrs Lorna Whiston discusses ways in which to encourage children to express themselves through the written word.
T
here are many ways in which parents can encourage the development of writing skills. As with storytelling and reading, the approach should always be positive and approached as shared family experiences. These ideas can be followed in any language but if you want to encourage writing in English, your children must be able to speak English first. Writing skills can then be introduced alongside other aspects of the English language, namely reading, speaking and listening, at around the age of six. With a very young child (about four years old), give plenty of opportunity to use paints and crayons to draw. Although it may look messy, always ask what it represents, then write his name with a thick marker pen and label the picture according to his instructions, for example ‘a ship on the sea’ and so on. Put it on the wall and practise ‘reading’ it with him. Sometimes he might want to label his own work - this is the first understanding of written symbols, even if the writing is just a scribble. Later, as he learns that the words used must be specific, write the words for him but always write what he dictates. Keep it simple, with large printed letters and let him write over your writing. Give lots of praise or even special stickers. Activities that encourage hand-eye coordination and that help with early writing include cutting, sticking, colouring, playing with dough, threading beads and building blocks. Children at this stage of development enjoy these activities which at the same time stimulate imagination and creativity. While they may appear to have no connection with writing, these activities are actually helping to lay the foundation for successful creative writing in later years. There is a very strong correlation between children who read well and children who write well. If, from an early age, you share books and stories with children, you are not only fostering an interest in reading, but also extending vocabulary and improving sequencing of ideas which is very important as children begin to write.
As hand control improves, get your child to tell you what to write, and he can copy a sentence or phrase underneath your writing. He will soon progress to writing single words, such as ‘house’ and later advance to ‘This is a house’. When he is writing, keep the sessions short, make it fun and show him how to sit at a table and hold the pencil correctly. A fat stubby pen or pencil is most suitable in the beginning. He can continue to illustrate and this could be anything from a simple sketch to an elaborate picture. Encourage talk about what is depicted in the picture. Then as your child progresses, encourage him to write in full sentences. Once he has developed the ability to write a full sentence (at around six or seven years), you will observe that he will want to squeeze in more and more information. If he does this, you can suggest using two or three separate sentences, rather than stringing ideas together with ‘and’. Writing should be for an audience too. Let him write his story for you or for his siblings. Once he is beginning to write more than a few words, he will need ideas to stimulate his imagination. Start with your child’s own experiences and encourage him to write about things and people that are personally significant, such as family trips, visits to the zoo, or his family. The advantage of focusing on personal experiences is that younger children are most interested in the immediate world around them. They will have more knowledge and a greater emotional attachment to events and people that affect their own lives and therefore their ideas will flow better. Always try to pay attention to content first and to the message the child is trying to convey, rather than focusing on his mistakes, as this will put him off writing altogether. Of course, there is a place for accuracy and for editing work, but the key is to ensure that children remain confident and enjoy writing. With proper and positive guidance, the rest will follow as your children mature. Article contributed by Lorna Whiston Study Centres.

Coaching Your Child Ask any parent what they want for their children and, chances are, the answer will be “for them to be happy”. No matter what else we want for them, happiness is the ultimate aim. Help children get a head start in life – help them learn how to make choices, have a positive attitude to life and to develop powerful habits instead of ineffective ones. Children who are able to recognise and manage their emotions, to enjoy life and to interact assertively with others will lead productive and fulfilling lives. With the right coach, your child will be able to take control and responsibility for his or her own happiness and reach the full potential. They will learn how to set their goals, how to handle feelings, as well as understand the art of communication and positive thinking so that they develop self-confidence, persistence, determination and success. Where necessary, the coach can work on a variety of areas including relaxation, managing exam nerves and stress, improving memory, better self-esteem, improved concentration and focus, positive thinking and self-motivation. Hypnosis Myths De-Bunked For centuries, there has been mixed views on the practise of hypnotism and hypnotherapy. Some see it as good while others see it as evil. Modern hypnotherapy emphasises on relaxing the mind and instilling positive thoughts, though there are those who are still against the idea of being hypnotised due to various reasons. There are some myths about hypnotism but how much of it is true? Let’s take a look at the myths and facts: Myths

Once hypnotised, the person is forced to do things against their will.
•
Nobody can be hypnotised to do something against their will.
•
Hypnotism can instantly solve problems and give answers.
•
The hypnotist can only provide suggestions; the final decision still lies with the subject.
•
There is a possibility of getting stuck in a hypnotic state.
•
There are no cases of people getting stuck in a hypnotic state. The worst that could happen is that the subject falls asleep.
•
Hypnotism is (closely) related to demonic activities.
•
Hypnotism is merely a trance state similar to sleep. It is a form of relaxation.
It is up to the individual to decide whether he or she believes in what hypnotherapy can do as it may conflict with their personal beliefs and value systems. However, for those who are open to hypnotherapy, they can either seek to consult a hypnotherapist or alternatively, may wish to learn the skills and techniques themselves.

In Focus
A Penny for Your Thoughts We are living in a time where the price of almost everything from food, petrol and electricity is increasing but paycheques remain the same or are less than adequate. Many families are affected by the economy and have had to make major changes in their lifestyles just to make ends meet. Many parents believe that their children are too young to learn about saving money and being prudent. In fact, saving money is a habit that should be instilled in every child at a young age. It not only helps parents to save money, but also teaches children to learn the value of money and how to be wise when making purchases.
Having the knowledge of financial literacy is essential to everyone,
parents and children alike, because it benefits the whole family in the long run. Kids tend to spend their pocket money excessively on junk food, sweets and toys, and they will ask their parents to buy them the things they can’t afford. Through financial literacy programmes, children are taught to manage their money well and learn how to apply their mathematical skills in real-life situations. It is important for kids to know the benefits of saving, getting the right amount of change back when they buy something and be able to differentiate between needs and wants. This will ensure that they develop good spending habits which will help them a lot as they grow older.
them to save a little each day until they reach a certain amount and then the parents will top up the balance. That way, kids will appreciate the items even more because they had saved and worked hard for it. They will also realise that ‘earning money' is not simple and that it takes time and effort. Financial literacy is not about how good children are at mathematics. By knowing the value of money and the importance of saving, children learn the importance of being financially stable. In summary, they are learning an essential life skill that will enable them to lead a more rewarding and fulfilling life..
There are many ways that parents and children can save money. For example, unplugging all electrical items that are not in use to save on electricity bills. Avoid switching on the lights during the day, and switching on the air-conditioning only when necessary. Another way is to keep a record of the amount of money spent everyday so that it is easy to identify what items are less important and that the family can do without. As parents, do not immediately buy the things children ask for. Instead, give them the opportunity to earn some pocket money by asking them to do house chores or by requiring them to study hard and get good results in school. An even better idea would be to ask

A Day to Remember Sharing from Thailand By Germaine (19) and Joyan Tan (16)
*minimal corrections have been made to article to preserve its originality
During their recent school holidays, Germaine and Joyan went to Thailand to do some volunteer work. They wrote about their many different experiences and how the trip changed the way they view certain things. As their aunt Tan Lay Keng commented, “Guess we need to send more kids to poorer places to see the other side of the world in order to appreciate what they have back home. Treasure what we have because we really are so much better off than many others out there. Before you complain that life is bad for you, think of those who are suffering and you'll realise that in actual fact, you're quite fortunate and lucky! Be content, be appreciative and we'll definitely feel much happier and enjoy each day with gratitude.” Below is Germaine and Joyan’s story about their inspiring volunteering experience. Let’s hope you guys will get motivated after reading their moving story and start helping others and doing something worthwhile too! 21st June 2010:
down on the children. The little children, some not even able to articulate themselves yet, stood upright under the scorching sun waiting for our arrival.
They were dressed in tattered clothes, some without shoes, and all without hats or any material at all to protect them from the burning heat. We, on the other hand, arrived decked in comfortable clothes, with shoes to protect our feet, and almost all of us were wearing hats and had sun-block on. And still, we were complaining about the heat. The title of this story – ‘A Day to Remember’ - reminds me of those compositions we would write in Primary School. In those days, we would write a piece narrating what had happened on that particular day and why it was remembered. I used to hate writing such compositions. But right now, saying that today is a day that I want to remember for the rest of my life, is truly heartfelt.
Today was the first time I cried while seeing little children stand in the sun. Being a Saturday, we did not go to Da Tong Secondary School to teach but instead, visited different schools in Thailand to give them teaching materials. We received an extremely warm welcome from the students of the first school. They stood in tidy rows, came up in neat lines to accessorise us with colorful paper garlands, and dutifully sang a few songs for us. It doesn’t sound like much, I know. Yet whilst all these were taking place, the sun shone unmercifully
The children were very obedient. As their teacher shouted the commands, they did what was expected dutifully without any complaint at all. They even sang quite a few Chinese songs for us, all still standing under the hot sun. My heart ached for them; that we are all equal and yet they have to live in such trying conditions; that the heat was so unbearable and yet they had to stand there and welcome (as heartily as possible) strangers like us; that they are so young and yet they have to endure such hardships that we have never even gone near to suffering before. Later, a little girl even vomited because of the heat. All so often, back at home, everybody tells us that we are ‘the future of the country’. We are the next generation and thus the future leaders of society. We are pampered, fed with good food every day, and educated as best as possible. Just the environment we grow up in is so comfortable for us. Maybe because of such constant flattery and comfort, we become complacent.

We forget that in other corners of the world, there are the less fortunate. We forget that there are people who don’t even get their three meals a day.
We forget that there are other children who are ‘the future’ of their countries, and yet they live in constant poverty and hardships. We don’t even fully understand the notion of ‘poverty’.
The children welcoming the volunteers with songs and all dressed up and ready to dance
And today when we went to all four different schools in Thailand, each smaller than the former, I was truly shocked at the state in which some children live in. We saw little children standing on burning sand without any shoes on at all. We saw little children dressed in long sleeves and long pants under the hot sun just so that they could perform for us – their visitors.
Group picture with students from a school in the mountains in Thailand
We saw a sumptuous feast being served to us during lunch and yet it just caused me to wonder – how much was all this costing these poor villagers? Everything that I saw and experienced today opened up a whole new perspective to things. I know it sounds cliché, but it truly made me appreciate what I have back at home. When I’m under the hot sun here in Thailand, I comfort myself with the thought that when I get back to Singapore, I will be able to enjoy the cooling air-conditioning. When I’m tired after a day’s work here in Thailand, I tell myself that when I get back, I can rest all I want. When I am unable to take the unpalatable food here in Thailand, I remind myself of the delicious and sumptuous food I have back in Singapore.

But the children and people living in Thailand don’t have all these to look forward to. To put it in not so nice terms: even if they don’t like their lives here, they don’t have any other choice. Today caused me to think a lot, to question the life that I live every day. It was incredibly memorable, and I hope that I will never forget the lessons and experiences I have had today.

Say NO to Plastic Bags Kids can make a difference!
In 2009, a group of six passionate, brave kids established Kids For Earth (KFE) to make a change. What started off as a simple presentation of an inspiring environmental story called ‘Billy the Plastic Bag’ eventually grew into a major public movement against the use of plastic bags. On 19th June, in conjunction with Climate Change Week, YTL hosted the Kids For Earth Children’s Workshop in its effort to inspire and educate other children on how they can make a difference to our environment, starting from their own homes and schools. Our very own Superkidz Club member, Valentina (14), joined the workshop along with her friend Sherine (14). Valentina jotted down her thoughts on the whole experience, and below is her story! On the 19th of June, I, along with my friend, Sherine, went for the Kids For Earth Children’s Workshop. The workshop was held at Teeq Brasserie in Lot 10. It was truly a workshop for kids, by kids. A basic summary of Kids For Earth is that it was created by Gabriel (15) and his sister, Raphaelle Tseng (11). From there, they recruited the other members of the team through family, friends, and by word of mouth. Kids For Earth recently turned a year old, and their first and current campaign is to discourage the use of plastic bags. After registering and changing into the T-shirts that we were required to wear during the workshop, we met Gabriel and Raphaelle, who explained a little bit of what Kids For Earth is really about. The workshop started off with a brief welcome speech before we gathered into groups and picked team names. Sherine and I teamed up with two students from the Alice Smith school, but we didn’t know them. It was an awkward start, and we ended up picking a lame team name (for anyone who’s curious, it was Name)! After that we had an icebreaker game where we formed a circle going in order of birth month and day and introduced ourselves. We were also shown a presentation of Billy the Plastic Bag, which was about a day in the life of a plastic bag that was carelessly thrown away. The presentation also explained a little more about the team and the publicity they’ve gotten so far. Afterwards we rotated between three stations where we discussed ideas and play games. My group’s first station was one that really tried to make us think. With a blank flipchart in front of us, we were asked for ideas to put Kids For Earth in our schools. Basically, we were trying to find ways to make our schools more environmentally-friendly. We were presented with ideas from Gabriel, but it took a while for our brains to start churning out ideas. Soon the page was covered with ideas, for example turning off air-conditioners when classrooms are not in use and to buy second-hand school books.

Read all about it from the Superkids themselves! Next we moved to station two, where we did an eco quiz. It was fairly easy, with some tricky questions thrown in. Since we finished earlier than the others, we got to take a short break. Then we moved on to the final station, the biodegradation game. We were given a few items, some cards and a list and were told to label items by how long it took them to biodegrade, along with some other characteristics such as whether they could be turned into fertiliser or not.
you’re passionate about. It doesn’t have to be big; in fact, it’s always great to start small. Small steps become big ones and from there you can go anywhere!
When everyone was done with the three stations, a poster competition was held where teams drew and coloured their posters. After that there was a great buffet-style lunch. When we had all eaten, it was time for the winner of the poster competition to be announced. There was also a speech by Ms. Ruth Yeoh, the Director of Investments of YTL Corporations Bhd. After they announced the winners of the poster competition (if you were one of the winners and are reading this, congratulations!), they also announced winners for the game and quiz. Surprise, surprise, it was… my team! I’d like to think we were all surprised, especially because I don’t think any of us knew we’d get a prize for that. All the winners got a signed copy of a Billy the Plastic Bag book. I was a little disappointed knowing the workshop had come to an end, but all good things eventually must. Though at times the workshop seemed a bit disorganised, it was also their first time running something like this. Plus I found the workshop educational, and I think it gave me a better respect for the environment than I had before. Something I really admire about the team is their dedication to their cause and the fact that instead of just sitting around, they actually got the courage to contribute to it. How many kids can say that? That’s why, readers, I encourage you to follow their footsteps and do something

The Smart Prince By Ainthini Selvaraj (9 years old) *minimal corrections have been made to article to preserve its originality.
Once upon a time, there lived a king that ruled the kingdom of Evergreen. The king had a beautiful daughter. She was named Princess Ellie. One day, the king decided to get his daughter married. The king wanted his daughter to get married to a suitable prince. After a few hours thinking, he soon got a wonderful idea.
The next day, an announcement was made. “Any prince who is able to tell a never-ending story will get to marry the princess.” Many princes from all over the world gathered to take the test. However, they all failed. Then, a prince volunteered to take the test. He started, “Once upon a time, there lived a man that did a good deed to a colony of ants. When the man was punished for a certain offence, he was warned to gather an enormous pile of grain. The colony of ants took turns to take a grain. The first ant took the first grain. The second ant took a second grain…” The prince went on and on until finally, the king agreed that he had passed the test. The next day, the prince and the princess got married. They lived happily ever after.

as families or as couples. In fact, we are delighted to announce that we have ‘saved’ several marriages during our certification training. Now, back to your issues. I can understand how frustrating it must feel when something like that happened to you. You are not alone, but there are surely a few things you can do to make the situation better. First off, let’s start with something within your control – yourself. You see, every time your wife ‘interrogates’ you, you can choose to respond by feeling frustrated, or look at it from the positive angle. Could it be that she only had your wellbeing in mind? Sometimes it just takes a ‘stepping in the other person’s shoe' for us to look at the scenario in a different light. Seek to understand; then to be understood. You see, sometimes by changing the lenses in which we see the world, we perceive things differently, and that alone can make many situations much, much better.
Dr Billy Kueek: Hello Anonymous! I like how you ended your query (for obvious reasons!). What I would like to point out to you is that, many men feel the same way, so you need not be anonymous. Let me begin by highlighting that I have to make some extrapolations of your letter, because I would love to interact and find out more, rather than just the brief description you have provided. For example, I would like to know the following and more: • When you said she was lovely, what exactly did she do that made you feel that way? • When you said ‘interrogating’, did that come through her words, tone, body language or the way that she looked at you? How did she look at you to make you feel she was interrogating? •
Did it occur to you that she may be interested, a sign of love, since many women love to share?
•
When you were dating, were there times when she showed such intense interest by asking lots of questions?
•
Have you ever asked lots of questions because you were concerned and interested in her day?
Haha… alright alright! I shall not intimidate you even more. It seems to me that like many men, you are not a detailed person and this is probably the reason for your frustration over the detailed questioning. Increasingly, I discovered an interesting trend when we run Saturday seminars as we have more and more participants coming to the seminars
When she SMS-ed or called you earlier that day, could your recall if your response to her was positive? Think not of how you have communicated to her, but of how she would perceive it. In NLP, we teach that the meaning of your communication is the response that you get. If her response is something you do not want, you may need to change your approach. A change of tone, a lowering of voice, the slowing down of your pace – all these are vocal elements that can soften the atmosphere in which we interact with each other. Also, understand that no matter how old we are, we have psychological needs to fulfill. For example, we constantly need the 3As Acceptance, Acknowledgement and Assurance. From your letter, it sounds like your wife desires these As and so, in an auditory way, she needs communication, she needs to hear it.Take these questions as her voicing her need for you to renew your ‘love vows’and start thinking of ideas for little romantic surprises. Once her needs are fulfilled, it is then easier for you to request what you need – your personal time and space. If your way of having personal time and space means getting into a hobby, perhaps you may want to get her involved and interested too? Just as you need personal time, she needs couple time. The actions you take to manage yourself can influence the outcome of how you both manage the relationship. Start with yourself, then work with her.
