When I first started Kidz magazine six years ago, the intention was to provide parents in Malaysia with a source of free information – in order to empower them so that they can then make informed decisions for themselves and for their family. From there, we created SUPERKIDZ magazine and the Superkidz Club to provide our younger readers with a platform to develop their creativity and growth. Though our intentions were noble and we were able to reach out to many, we realised that it was only on the surface and we wanted to do more. Having started Kidz Smart Academy with its Financial Literacy Program (FLiP) and having personally learnt NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), I wanted to do more to help others. There was also the realisation that with a printed magazine, we would continue to use paper and deplete the earth’s resources. (see note below) Therefore, as they say “All good things must come to an end.” It was a decision that took some time - not one that was made lightly - as we did not want to disappoint our readers, our friends who have supported us all these years. It was like losing part of your family. So though we will no longer be in print, the SUPERKIDZ team will be posting all our articles, competitions and information online, on our website, www.kidz.my So instead of receiving a hard copy of the magazine issues, Superkidz Club members will still enjoy their privileges online, such as special promotions, events and discounts, movie passes and contests. They will still enjoy all the benefits of the magazine without wasting paper - how cool is that! In the meantime, my focus will be on developing more programmes for children and also running NLP programmes to help more people deal with the challenges in life. (see article on page 18 for more info) To all our friends, readers, subscribers, contributors, advertisers, suppliers and especially to my team, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support, and your friendship. This is definitely not goodbye – only Au Revoir.

Note:

• 1 copy of SUPERKIDZ magazine = approximately 22 sheets of paper (44 printed pages, double-sided per issue) • 5,000 copies of magazine printed per issue = 110,000 sheets of paper • 1 tree makes approximately 8,333.33 sheets of copy paper (Source: conservatree.com).

This is saving 13.2 trees per issue or 79.2 trees per year (13.2 times 6). As 1 common matured tree planted in the tropics typically offsets 50 pounds of carbon a year, and over its lifetime will offset about 1 tonne, we estimate that our decision to go online will result in a carbon emission reduction of 3,960 pounds or 1.76 tonnes of carbon per annum. It may not seem much, but we want to do our part for the environment. In fact, when we worked out how many issues we have produced in the past since we started, including Kidz magazine, the number becomes quite astounding. Every little bit helps to stop global warming, so let’s do our bit for Mother Nature!

Speak Up

Don't suppress it, express it!

I would like to share my parenting experience with everyone. My 16-year-old son is loud, rude and disrespectful to me. Since he turned 12, I could never have a normal conversation with him because it would always turned into an argument. Tired of all the fights and scolding him all the time, one day I sat down beside him and started talking to him in a calm voice instead of ‘joining’ him when he shouted. Slowly he calmed down and became less defensive – I was pleasantly surprised! The lesson I’ve learned is that every parent can have a good relationship with their children if they try hard enough to make it work. So fellow parents – instead of punishing or scolding our kids, let’s try reasoning with them for a change. - Anonymous, sent via email

Children are really getting smarter and smarter! Recently my 10-year-old boy broke some house rules, so we punished him by confiscating his handphone. When we asked for it from him, he ‘surrendered’ it willingly – we were so surprised! So we thought that maybe he has really learned his lessons and were repenting. Then, we found out a week later that he actually took out his SIM card, so he was still able to use. How? He borrowed a handphone from his friend! So parents beware – learn to be smarter than your kids! - Phoenix Lee (mother of 2), sent via email

I love those days when I wake up to blue skies, white fluffy clouds and the sun shining. I also love rainy afternoons, because I will let my little boys splash and play in puddles during rainy days. Then they take a nice hot bath together afterwards, and we all have a relaxing afternoon nap - heaven! - Kim Mee, sent via email

I feel really bad that our parents have ruined the beautiful Earth with their wasteful attitude. When I suggest that we recycle, they also refuse to listen to me and are unwilling to try new ideas on how we can sort out our rubbish. So everthing is still thrown into the bin and nothing gets recycled at my house… It’s like now we (children) have to deal with the pollution problems that they have left for us to inherit. Angry teen, sent via email

I absolutely love your well-targeted magazine! It is a really helpful tool to so many of us young parents who are striving to make the best decisions for our children in this increasingly competitive world. Great job! - Kim Mee, sent via email

The Groovy Guide to Parenting Gen Y and Z

Dear Tua Ee

Author : Jamilah Samian Price : RM39.90

Author : Chiang Siew Lee Price : RM33.90

From their favourite TV shows and the way they speak to how they work, Gen Y and Z have habits that can be quite different from other generations. Parents (or adults) may not even understand what they are saying or doing, causing a generation gap. Ready or not, you need to deal with the Gen Y and Z in your midst – they are your nieces, nephews, cousins, kids, students, staff or even bosses! Understanding Gen Y and Z gives you the power to communicate effectively with them, paving the way to a smarter, happier and more successful you.

The book is a hilarious guide on how to survive the serious business of babyhood and parental naiveté. It is written by a first-time mother juggling motherhood, from the perspective of a newborn. In a series of letters to his aunt in Brazil, Baby Eng Seng pokes fun at the anxiety, joy, confusion and the pride experienced by his bumbling parents, Papa and Mama. Dear Tua Ee brings humour and wit to subjects of growing up that every parent can identify with. Its lessons give all firsttime parents hope – that babies do eventually turn out fine, in spite of the parental trials (and errors) in their early years.

The Roar of the Tiger Cubs Author : Estèphe and Perrine Corlin with Rosalind Corlin Price : RM44.30 In November 2010, 10-year-old twins Estèphe and Perrine Corlin sat for the Cambridge University International General Certificate Secondary Exam (IGCSE) – that is meant for 16 year olds - and scored A’s. Their success earned them global attention and suddenly they were mentioned in journals, magazines, websites and blogs. Soon after, they were inundated with requests from the media and public who were fascinated by their story and wanted to find out about their secret ‘formula’. What is their motivation? How do they challenge themselves? Why do they do it? How do they do it? The answers are given in this book. Most of the content of the book are personal extracts from their diaries. Written together with their mother Rosalind, this book is their story, their way to inspire children and parents to recognise that everyone can achieve excellence.

Family Ties Author : Danielle Steel Price : RM32.90 Annie Ferguson was one of Manhattan's brightest young architects. Then overnight, she became a mother to her sister's three orphaned children. Now, the children are young adults and are confronting major challenges of their own. At 42 years old, Annie is navigating a parent's difficult passage between lending them a hand and letting them go. With a satisfying career and a fulfilling family life, she has also reconciled herself to being single. Then, an accident leads Annie to a man who will tempt her to reconsider her belief that actually, it is not too late to fall in love after all...

Eight Treasures of the Dragon

Nine Little People Who Lived in A Chest

Author : Tutu Dutta-Yean Price : RM24.90 Reading level : 9 – 13 years old

Author : Wee Su May Price : RM29.90 Reading level : 9 – 13 years old

This book is a collection of folk tales and legends about dragons or naga from Asia. The treasures in this collection include: the Chinese story of a dragon king and queen whose fates are intertwined with that of the city of Yanjing (ancient Beijing); an intriguing tale from India about a queen’s machinations to conceal the identity of her naga child; from Indonesia, the legend of the Dragon Queen of the South Seas; an ancient and haunting Japanese love story between the lord of the hills and the princess of the sea; from Malaysia, an Orang Asli tale of the origins of Tasik Chini; and from Singapore, a reinterpretation of the famous story of Sang Nila Utama.

Sylvia is given an ugly wooden chest and one night, the carvings on the chest come alive. She befriends Tuktu and his little family and is told that they have a condition that can only be cured by another little family that lives in another chest. Sylvia goes through many adventures to find the other chest and eventually succeeds. There is an emotional reunion between the two little families who are related and used to belong to one chest. Then the search for the materials needed for the antidote begins. Can they race against time to make the antidote and save the lives of Tuktu and his family?

Self Development with Billy Kueek International

What do you want to do with your life? Article contributed by Kit Lim (Certified NLP Trainer)

I give talks to students and the usual answer to this question of mine is – I don’t know. Shocking? Not really. When I think back to my younger days, I too wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, except to have fun doing it and, hopefully, make money along the way. How many of us truly know what we want to do, and then how many of us get to do what we want to? Are we living our lives by design or by default? Early 2009, I had the chance to meet with International Speaker and Master Trainer, Dr Billy Kueek and little did I know then that the meeting would be a turning point in my life. The original meeting was to explore if Billy could help me develop programmes for children as part of the Kidz Smart Academy. He then invited me to attend one of his evening workshops which I did and at that workshop, I had a ‘light-bulb moment’. The workshop was about NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and it was then that I realised that there was much for me to learn about myself and how to become a better person. Not that I thought I was not a good person or that I was not doing well, but I knew I could do better and do more to help others. I joined the NLP Practitioner programme in July 2009. After that, I kept in touch with Billy, assisted in his other NLP programmes that he conducted and saw how empowering it was. When you see someone who has suicidal tendencies change to become a positive person, or a person suffering from substance abuse give up their addiction, or

someone who suffers from depression smiling constantly, all in a matter of days, I knew that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my lift. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you have made a difference to someone’s life, that you have helped them change their life forever or perhaps provided them with the nudge they needed to get back on their feet. It is something that money cannot buy. It made me decide to take my learning further so I took the Master Practitioner certification in November 2010 and got myself certified as an NLP Trainer by the end of 2010. With the skills and knowledge that I have, I can now coach others to help them get rid of any baggage that may be hampering their growth, perhaps remove their limiting beliefs or help them in setting and achieving their goals. My clients range from 10 to 82 years of age. And when I ran my NLP training programme, it was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life. Being able to help others learn the skills, techniques and knowledge that I had, empowering them so that they can empower others. Someone asked me recently why I was so passionate about NLP. When you learn it, and know that you have control over your life, that you can help others do the same, that you can live your best life, how could you not be passionate? What do I want to do with my life? I am doing it right now!

The Beginnings of Reading: Making Meaningful Books The magical world of reading starts long before children recognise words and sentences. Hence the most important message that parents and teachers can convey to young children is that reading is all about understanding. This is the key to unlocking the mystery of reading that will motivate children to read for pleasure.

T

he development of reading skills begins the minute a child picks up a book or when parents begin to share books and stories with their children. Books meant for very young children often rely on pictures to tell the story and often have no print at all. Even at this stage children should be encouraged to participate in a discussion about the pictures, to ask and answer questions such as why or how an event is taking place, or what is going to happen before the next page is turned.

This interaction with the story and the encouragement will make the book come alive for the children and will also ensure that they understand what the story is all about. To encourage children’s interest in books, parents should take advantage of their growing awareness and curiosity about the world around them and use this to develop their skills in a positive manner. Making books is a wonderful way to do this. When making books with your children, always start with their own interests and experiences. For example, you could take your child to the zoo and take photographs of her with different animals, or even buy some animal postcards from the souvenir shop. You could use these photos to make a simple book of a few pages, sticking a different picture on each page. Talk to your child about each photograph and then, using her ideas, write a simple, repetitive sentence on each page of the book. There are several important points to note when making such books for young children to read:

1) Keep it simple. Four to eight pages are sufficient. Any longer and young children will probably lose interest. 2) Stick to one caption or a simple sentence per page. Make the caption repetitive so that the child encounters the same key words again and again. 3) Write the caption in large, clear print (not cursive writing) with a thick pen. Alternatively, captions can be printed from a computer (comic sans size 36 pt would be suitable). 4) Involve your child in making the book. Draw on her thoughts and ideas. Let her stick in the pictures or add some colour to the book. By doing this, the book will have real meaning for her. 5) Encourage your child to share the book with family and friends. This can become a much-loved book that will be read many times. At three years of age, a child will not be able to decode the words. However she will slowly get the idea that print delivers a message and the book you have made together will be very personal and something to treasure. Similar books could be made on the themes such as your family, favourite toys, your holiday or going shopping‌ the list is endless.
