Insights on Life from a Tween’s Perspective
As a child, I had always excelled in studies, especially in writing. Teachers from Lorna Whiston encouraged me to read more, as I had only been reading factual books. And so, I have started reading story books like Harry Potter, The Inkheart Trilogy, The Alex Rider Series, The Twilight Saga and Young Bond Series. I love reading so much that I often neglect other things. My mother often complains that I read a book too many times. I have read Harry Potter three times and I’m now reading all seven books again before the sixth show comes to the cinemas. Believe it or not, I have read the Twilight Saga at least ten times each! Mrs. Corbett, my Lorna Whiston teacher for two years straight now, told my mother that I'm a true book worm - one that appreciates books and really wants to understand their content. Lately, my teacher has been praising me for my writing even though I never really did put any effort in it. As I approach my teens, I now find myself doing things I’m only interested in. Now I believe I have gained more interest than ever in Maths with our mid-year exams coming. I'm confident that I could be the only one to score a 100% in the exam! I also recently attended a memory mastery and leadership course at Achievers Platform in Shah Alam. Other than the many memory tips they gave, I've learnt to remember main points in subjects for exams. I've learnt what leadership is and what is life; what is team work and what is sacrifice. As a tween, it won’t be long until I become an adult. I've learnt that our ambition or goals have to be strong this next four to five years, or I won't succeed in life. I've learnt that we have to be responsible for those working under us next time. I've learnt that we have to appreciate friends and family before it's too late. I've learnt that we have to live like there's no tomorrow. I feel thankful that my essay is appreciated and that many will be able to read it. I have to say that it was inspired by the sixth book of the Alex Rider Series, Ark Angel by Anthony Horowitz. I believe that most of it is written in my own sentences but with the same storyline. I appreciate that Superkidz Magazine has a place for talented people to show their talents to the outside world.

They will not rest until they are in power and the human race has been destroyed. Nicholas Flamel knows he must protect Josh and Sophie and the pages from the “Dark Elders”. For this, he must rely on Clarent - the sister sword to Excalibur - and the sword's evil power makes it nearly impossible to use without darkness seeping into the soul of whoever wields it. Record-Holding Swimmer is also a
Young Philanthropist! She once made the Malaysia Book of Records for her feat in swimming as a toddler. Now aged nine, Kam Su-Sze is raising funds for those in need, proving that no one is ever too young to be charitable. Su-Sze had her first taste of fame at the tender age of 2½ years. After swimming 50 metres non-stop and unassisted, her accomplishment was acknowledged by the Malaysia Book of Record (MBR) in the ‘Longest Distance Swimming by a Toddler’ category in 2003. The award and recognition came as quite a surprise to her family. “When Su-Sze was 17 months old we enrolled her for swimming lessons so she’d feel more comfortable around water. It didn’t occur to us that she’d be such a natural swimmer; we were only concerned for her safety as we had a pool at home,” explained Su-Sze’s mum, Kim.
“However with practise Su-Sze picked up the sports quickly. Her swimming instructor at that time suggested that we try for the MBR. He helped us with the application and we simply followed his lead, not expecting all the ensuing publicity. We are very proud that our daughter is listed in the MBR,” she added. When asked about her own personal experience, Su-Sze had this to say: “I loved swimming ever since my mum put me in the pool for the first time when I was six months old. I can remember the first time I jumped into the pool was when my cousins pushed me in when I was about one and half years old. It felt like I was flying! I am most proud of my achievement; only a few of my friends know about it and they simply say ‘cool’!” Being so young, Kim’s main concern about her daughter is that she grows up just like any other girl her age. “We are very careful that Su-Sze doesn’t get too big headed,” conveyed Kim. “After MBR, my husband and I felt that she was getting too much publicity. So we decided that she’ll be a very ordinary girl growing up with no ‘pushing’ on our part. She is allowed to do whatever she is happy to do, with no expectations from us. The only thing I constantly remind her is to have compassion and to be helpful. Fundraising activity is the only thing I encourage her to do.”
Su-Sze during her MBR attempt in 2003
Su-Sze with her parents 12
July-August 2009
Fundraising has been a big part of Su-Sze’s life since 2005. Her family had an eventful experience the year before when she was four while in Phuket during the tsunami disaster. “We didn’t know about the tsunami as we were at a presentation and only realised it when it was over,” recounted Kim. “Staff kept asking everyone to evacuate and to go to the city (away from the beach). We just followed them blindly. Only much later when we returned to the hotel did we find out what happened on CNN news. When we got home, Su-Sze watched a lot of news on TV and kept saying that she wanted to share her food from our fridge and her toys with those children whose parents died.”
Superkid
Exemplary. Outstanding. Courageous. Are you a Superkid? “When I finally understood what she was trying to say, we discussed what she can do to help those victims. I’ve been jotting down the stories she tells since she started talking and have also kept drawings she drew. So we got them printed into postcards and sold them to raise funds for United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The whole experience instilled a deeper sense of helpfulness and willingness to contribute to society in SuSze which is invaluable to our family,” she recalled. Titled ‘One Story After Another’, Su-Sze’s postcard sets were sold at events and various retail outlets.
Su-Sze with her friends
At the end of their fundraising efforts, the mother-daughter team sold 300 sets of the postcards and raised RM33,000 for UNICEF – not a small feat by any measure. “I feel happy because I know that their lives (those who benefited from the funds) have changed and I hope that they will live a normal life like us,” reflected Su-Sze. Late last year, Su-Sze approached yet another organisation, World Vision Malaysia, and offered to help out. “For World Vision Malaysia’s ‘Food for Life’ project in North Korea, we made gift wrappers from my drawings and poems. My ultimate goal is to raise RM60,000. We are more than halfway there, so my mum and I will keep working hard at it”, declared the big-hearted young girl. When asked how one should teach their children to be charitable, Kim replied, “I don’t think I am in a position to advise, but I believe that kind-heartedness and compassion should be practiced daily at home, even in small ways. We can teach children to respect all living things, including an ant. Instead of insecticides, use repellents. I grew up in a very poor family where pocket money was unheard of; we didn’t have luxuries like TV. So I guess I’ve just taught Su-Sze to be grateful and to appreciate how lucky she is.” In a world where social empathy is fast disappearing, it is heart-warming to see that at least one young girl is still trying to make a difference in the world she lives in. For being an MBR record holder, an active fundraiser and, above all, for showing others that philanthropy can start at any age, Su-Sze is surely a Superkid!

In HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE™, Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates! And then there’s Hermione, simmering with jealousy but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

A Voyage through the Solar System Outer Planets & Gas Giants
A gas giant is a large planet that is not primarily made up of rock or other solid substance. In our solar system, we have four gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These are also referred to as the outer planets. Over the centuries, we have learned a great deal about the planets. We have explored all the planets of the solar system, except for poor old Pluto. It was designated as a ‘Dwarf Planet’ recently and was kicked out of the solar system! Let’s explore the planets of the solar system, from the most distant to the one nearest to the sun.
■ Pluto
3 6
Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system.
Smaller than the moon in size, Pluto orbits the sun at an average distance of about six billion (6,000,000,000) kilometres. There are also three known moons that orbit Pluto called Charon, Nix and Hydra. Due to its small size, strange orbit and its incredible distance from the sun, Pluto is no longer officially classified as a planet. In fact, it is better related to a mysterious cloud of smaller objects that orbit far from the sun in what is known as the Kuiper belt (pronounced Koy-per). Kuiper belt has many Pluto-like objects and more are being discovered on a regular basis.
Pluto was discovered by a young American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. We know very little about Pluto because it is so far away. In 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft will zoom past Pluto, giving us our first detailed look at this lonely and distant place. What we do know is that Pluto is made up of rock and frozen ices, such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide, and that it has a very thin atmosphere that changes according to its highly elliptical (egg-shaped) orbit that, on occasions, bring it closer to the sun than Neptune.

■ Neptune
Neptune is a strange blue gas giant, discovered in 1846 by Frenchman Le Verrier and Englishman Couch Adams. Neptune consists mostly of gases, such as hydrogen and helium. It gets its beautiful blue colour from small quantities of methane and ammonia that make up part of its atmosphere. It is nearly four times the size of Earth and has 13 known moons, the largest called Triton. Neptune has been visited only once by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989. Scientists discovered that it has a highly active weather system, giant storms like Jupiter and even clouds called scooters that race around the planet at supersonic speeds. They even discovered a faint ring system.
The beautiful ringed planet Saturn is the second biggest planet in the solar system and possibly the most famous. In 1610 Galileo was the first person to observe Saturn using a telescope. In 1655, with a more refined and powerful telescope, Dutchman Christiaan Huygens was able to identify that Saturn had a ring system. The ring system is actually made up of thousands of individual ringlets consisting of water ice, dust and particles up to the size of an automobile – wow! Saturn also has many moons. There are seven larger moons and about 54 smaller moons that orbit the planet. The largest of its moons, Titan, is very unique because it is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere. Recently, the spacecraft Huygens that was attached to the Cassini satellite landed on Titan. Scientists saw a bizarre world of hydrocarbon seas, rivers and lakes nestled between the mountains and hills. Of late, the Cassini satellite photographed massive fountains of water from cryo volcanoes (ice volcanoes) being ejected into space from the surface of Saturn’s moon Enceladus.
■ Jupiter
■ Uranus
Uranus was discovered by the great astronomer William Herschel using a self-made telescope in 1781 - the first planet to be discovered this way. The Voyager 2 spacecraft is the only mission ever to have visited Uranus in 1986. Uranus is almost the same size as Neptune roughly four times the size of earth. Its atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen, helium and trace quantities of methane, giving it a beautiful blue green colour. Uranus has some very odd characteristics that make it different from other planets. Firstly, its axis of rotation is tilted at nearly 97 degrees. So its pole is pointing towards the sun, causing some very odd things to happen to the planet’s surface. Also, Uranus has a complex ring system and 27 known moons, the largest being Titania with a radius of just 788 km - about half the size of the moon
■ Saturn
Jupiter is a giant! It has the biggest magnetic field, the biggest storm, the most turbulent atmosphere and the largest mass of all the planets. In fact, you could fit 1,317 Earths into the volume of Jupiter! On a clear night, the planet can be seen as a bright white point of light that is brighter than all the other stars in the sky. The most spectacular feature of Jupiter’s surface is the storms and turbulent atmosphere that is constantly on the move. The biggest feature (storm) is called the Great Red Spot, a monster hurricane-like storm that has been visible on the surface of the planet since the 17th century. It could swallow the Earth whole nearly twice over. Jupiter has many moons but there are four major moons called the Galilean Moons Io, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Io is in a monumental gravity tug of war with Jupiter that results in many active volcanoes that cover the surface of Io and is considered the most volcanic body in the solar system. Scientists believe that there may be liquid oceans underneath the thick sheet of ice that covers the entire moon Europa. It is considered a strong possibility that those oceans may support life. That concludes our ‘exploration’ of the outer planets. Next time, we will continue our journey through the Asteroid Belt to the inner planets Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury. Make sure you check the upcoming issues!

The famous constellation Orion the Hunter Many of the constellations in the night sky, such as Orion, are associated with mythical characters and events that came mainly from Greek mythology. Greek mythology is filled with tales of gods and strange beasts that existed in ancient times. The myth of Orion the Hunter is a bizarre tale about a great hunter who was maybe not as well behaved as he could have been. The Son of Poseidon and the gorgon Euryale, Orion was a great hunter who used a club made of bronze. He fell desperately in love with Merope, whose father rejected him.
Next time, we will talk about the constellation of Scorpio which is now quite easy to spot. On a clear night, it is visible above the east horizon from about 9pm onwards. Look for the bright reddish star Antares that makes up the body of Scorpio. You should be able to see something that looks like the picture below. Happy star hunting!
Orion then tried to abduct her but was blinded and put to sleep by the god Dionysus. His sight was only restored after having been told by an oracle that he must travel East and let the first rays of the sun fall on his eyes. With his sight restored, Orion settled on Crete where he fell in love with Aurora. For this, he was killed by the jealous Artemis and then turned into a star constellation. Artemis made a scorpion rise from earth that stung Orion to death. The same Scorpion can be seen in the constellation of Scorpio. Orion had also mistreated the Pleiades, and they turned into doves to escape him. When he kept following them, they turned into stars, making the constellation with the same name. If you look up in the sky, the constellation of Pleiades can be seen quite near that of Orion.
AskAAZ What is life? How can you tell if something is alive or not? As silly as it may seem, the question is very important and actually not that easy to answer. What differentiates a rock from a tree? How can you tell if the tree is alive and the rock is not? We know that rocks aren’t alive, but how do you actually prove this scientifically? It is a question of great importance to scientists who explore other planets. When designing the Viking spacecraft that landed on Mars in 1975, they fitted it with special experiments to test whether life might exist on the planet. So what makes something alive? Must it have a heart? A brain? Does it wriggle and squirm, walk and talk? It could be any of these, and then some. Here is a general list of what we look for to define a living organism:
24
•
Motion - does it seem to move under its own power? Does it move with some apparent purpose (e.g., towards food, away from heat)?
•
Reproduction - does it have some way of making more of itself, either through sexual reproduction or by budding or separating in some way?
July-August 2009
•
Consumption - does it eat or drink? Does it take in nutrients in order to survive, grow, and eventually multiply?
•
Growth - does it, over time, increase in complexity, until it reaches a mature stage?
•
Stimulus response – does it respond to external stimuli, or has some sort of a nervous system to detect external conditions?
When you look at life in the case of extraterrestrial life such as aliens, we must remember that what we understand as indicators of life (like those above) may be totally different when it comes to alien life. So when searching for life on planets like Mars, we have to have an open mind and be ready for any possible variations.

Cool Experiments - Explained!

Materials used: •1x small water bottle •1x satay stick •Short length of cotton thread about 15cm •1x paper clip •A packet of salt •A pair of scissors •Hot water
Salt Crystals If you set up the salt crystal experiment properly you would have, by now, a thick growth of salt crystals on the string in the jar. There maybe also be salt crystals growing at the bottom of the jar or around the edge where your crystal solution touches the wall of the jar.

Using a magnifying glass or a microscope, you will see that salt crystals have a special shape. Each crystal will basically be the same shape as all the others. Why does this happen? Almost all chemical compounds, like salt and elements, form crystals. Even metals such as steel will form crystals if they are allowed to cool naturally from their molten state. Basically, crystallisation happens because the atoms in a solution (like the salt solution you made) only want to combine or join up with each other in a special way. There is only one way the atoms can link up, and when this process is repeated billions of times, you get the formation of geometric crystal shapes. The amazing part is that every different solution will form a different shape crystal. During a recent class at Aerospace, kids grew sugar crystals and copper sulphate crystals. The sugar crystals were long, rectangular shapes while the salt crystals were square shapes. The copper sulphate crystals were beautiful blue, rhomboid shapes.

Tension Building By Ho Yen Nee, 14 years old (Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Bintang Selatan) The acrid smell of smoke seeped in. Willing himself not to panic, Alex took a look at his surroundings. A single wooden chair was in a corner. He had checked all the walls and floors, hoping for an opening. There were none. Alex had started to panic when he noticed that the ceiling was cracked. He positioned and tested the chair before jumping. "ARGH!!" he shouted. He had managed to catch hold of a piece of ceiling. A rat scurried by as he struggled not to make sudden movements. He reached the end of a corridor. The smoke was starting to suffocate him. He ran down a flight of stairs nearby. WOOSH! A sudden scorching wind blew into him. He whimpered and turned back when he saw the fire on the ground floor. "Wait!" shouted a ruffled looking man. Alex assumed he was the gang leader as he was wearing a white combat jacket. The gang leader seemed to be torn from the instinct to escape from a burning building and the desire to kill Alex. "Fool! What criminal would set fire to a building from the bottom and stay to kill the victim himself?" shouted Alex as he flew up the stairs. The whole building was filled with suffocating smoke. Fire chased after Alex as he scrambled up floor after floor. Soon, the fire overtook him. He stumbled out and ran to an emergency staircase. A shriek could be heard behind Alex as the fire scorched the gang leader's skin. Alex had no choice but to escape to the roof. It was only after closing the door and jamming it that he realised he was trapped. Alex remembered seeing all the windows and doors shut. The pressure would soon make the building explode. Sweat pouring into his eyes, he forced himself to think. BANG! BANG! BANG! The door didn't give way under the gang leader's fists. By then, Alex had already decided what he had to do to survive. Tightrope walking. He grabbed a pipe and tied loose bricks at both ends. He stood on the edge of the building. Before him was a thick cord suspended between two buildings. "Tightrope walking has a trick to it," his uncle, Ian once taught him. "Weights at the ends of a pole strengthen the centre of gravity. It would be as easy as walking on a flat surface."
30
July-August 2009
Alex took a deep breath and placed a foot onto the cord. It swayed slightly. Not daring to breathe, he took another step. He exhaled in relief when he was sure he wasn't going to fall. 60 feet in the air, Alex heard fire engines and ambulances racing the burning building. He looked down. It was a big mistake. Alex panicked and his head started spinning. Vehicles and people looked tiny from where he was. Without realising it, he started running. He drew in quick breaths and started gasping. He was only half way across. An explosion sounded behind him. Letting out a startled cry, he threw his balancing pole away. Falling back, he gripped the thick cord. The cord snapped and he was flying into the opposite building. He closed his eyes, waiting for the impact. CRASH! He slammed into the wall. His hands were sweating and it burnt in response to friction as he slipped inch by inch down the cord. Fear overcame him. His arms began to numb. Black spots started to fill his vision. "I'm going to die..." was his last thought as the cord slipped through his fingers.

The
Dog Who
Loves Chocolate By Koh Jo Vin, years old Ice Cream (SRJK (C)10Chee Wen) One day, my father bought me a dog who loved chocolate icecream. The dog had brown fur, it was as brown as chocolate. Every morning, I would bring that dog for a run at the park. On the way home, I would buy him chocolate ice-cream. One night when I was having a drink in the kitchen, I heard a loud “CRASH” sound. After seeing that nobody was around, I ran upstairs to inform mum and dad. Dad hurried down to see what the noise was all about. When he switched on the light, we saw the dog that loves to eat chocolate ice-cream. Then mum scolded me like this “Why didn’t you leash that dog?”- I answered stammering: I didn’t k…..now he got loose.” Because of that dog, I was grounded! I couldn’t go out to play and I couldn’t bring that dog out for a whole week! What bad luck! One hot afternoon,6/30/09 I was allowed 3:22:01 to PM go out for two hours so I had to spend it wisely. I bought us both chocolate ice-cream, and then went for a quick run. After that, we went home.

That night, we had chocolate ice-cream for dessert, but chocolate dog ate biscuits instead. He was sad, so I secretly saved some chocolate ice-cream for him. Then one dark night, two men broke into our house. When chocolate dog saw them, he started barking and barking. I quickly informed mum and dad about chocolate dog’s barking. Dad wanted to check it out, but mum said “Don’t bother with that chocolate dog, he’s probably just barking for nothing.” But dad insisted on checking it out. When we went downstairs, I saw two black figures hitting chocolate dog. Dad told me to call the police. When the policemen arrived, they managed to catch the thieves but poor chocolate dog was bleeding badly. We had to send chocolate dog to the veterinarian hospital. Luckily, he survived with only a few stitches. When chocolate dog was allowed home, mum rewarded him with a big chocolate ice-cream. Now, isn’t he happy?

An Unforgettable
Adventure By Toon Kok Hoong, 11 years old (SK Pusat Bandar Puchong) Last summer, Justin, Kylie and Kayla went for a holiday at a wide, rocky beach. They were so happy when their parents gave them permission. On that afternoon, the children went exploring along the clean beach. They were puzzled when they did not meet anyone around and the tide was out. It was a perfect day. Suddenly, they found a cave. The entrance only allowed little light into it. “We should go in there and find out what or who is in there!” suggested Justin. “But it can be dangerous. We have no idea what’s in there!” said Kayla, who was afraid of almost everything. “Alright, then you don’t go in! Kylie and I will tell you what’s inside later, right Kylie?” Justin teased Kayla. “Yeah! Maybe Justin’s right. But we can’t leave you here alone now, can we?” Kylie was worried. Finally, they decided to go in together. It was really dark and damp inside the cave. They were lucky that there was some light flittering in. They started exploring around the cave together. In the middle of the cave, Kayla saw a shiny object. She called the rest and got the shock of their lives. There was an old, dusty, ancient chest. “Okay, we found a strange, ancient chest in the middle of nowhere so what are we gonna do?” asked Kylie. Kayla tried to stop Justin from opening the chest. It was too late. There was a sudden flash of light as bright as the sun that forced them to close their eyes tightly. “U-u-uh! W-what did y-you d-d-do?” Kayla and Kylie mumbled in fear. “Oh, c’mon! Don’t tell me you’re afraid of this old chest?” challenged Justin. They saw three crystals glittering and brightening up the cave. Each of them represents an element - fire, wind and water. They were curious to know more about the crystals and got hold of it. Suddenly, they heard a ZAP! After the shock, they felt stronger and wiser.
“Uh-oh! The tide is coming in. This place is gonna sink. We have to go!” shrieked Kayla. Kylie was scared and she hoped the water would go away. It came true! The cave began to dry up. Oh my God! I think we can control the elements after that little, ummm, shock!” Kayla exclaimed. First it was Kayla. She just stood there and the waves moved. Then, Kylie, using wind power, hovered through the air lightly. Justin then calmly released a boost and sent himself flying in the air. “This is fun! I’ve never even imagined this could happen,” Kylie said, in the deafening wind. The sun was almost set completely. It was getting a little late. They knew they had to go home before dark. “We’re definitely going to keep this crystal no matter what happens!” said Justin, Kayla and Kylie with enthusiasm. They kept the crystals and the whole incident a tight secret that not even both their parents knew a tiny single thing about their adventure at the beach. From that very day, their knew their lives would change forever.
