HEY KIDS!!

THIS MAG IS OURS TO CONQUER!!! Wow! What an amazing honour to be chosen as the guest editor of this month’s issue of SUPERKIDZ magazine!! Superkidz is an exciting magazine and I feel very lucky to be a member of this fantabulous club! Superkidz is a fun, exciting and amazing magazine. In this magazine, kids get to be creative and publish their OWN ORIGINAL ideas. It’s indeed BY kids and FOR kids only ….

Kids, we do get to express our creativity in this ‘private’ mag. We can get wacky and wild …….show our talents and skills by writing, sharing and learning. Why settle for a two-in-one or a three-in-one when we have a superb all-in-one? Go for the BEST of the BEST! Who knows?? Maybe someone who gets their work published in Superkidz mag would be famous someday!!!!! Writing, art, photography and many other talents and hobbies can help us kids get rid of stress, like how I get to shake the stress away when I listen to music or play my guitar. I know the Year 6 students, who will be sitting for their UPSR examination soon, are getting really stressed up…by the pressure put on them by their parents and teachers, expecting them to score 5 A’s or more. Although it is our responsibility to do well in this exam, do not forget that education is a lifelong process. You should continue to persevere in secondary school. I believe a balance must also be achieved. Study as hard as you wish but remember to give yourselves ample rest and time to do some wacky stuff as well! All the best to you guys and gals out there. I hope you will pass the exam with flying colours. As Superkidz, we should live up to our name. Though we’re young, we, too, can do our part in saving Mother Nature. We can help remind our friends and families not to litter and to not waste water and electricity. YES!! All these little things can help prevent global warming and reduce pollution. If we do not play our active parts, then the beauty of nature would no longer be there for us to behold in the next few years to come. The earth would probably end up as a big planet full of water or choked up in smog. The best way to start is simply by… READING! Read as much as you can to learn more about the world today. Or should I say…Congrats! You are indeed doing your part by reading the Superkidz mag! Superkidz magazine has helped us a lot. For me, it has helped build my confidence, with the many experiences from being a catwalk fashion model to an editor! Not forgetting the editorial staff at KIDZ magazine who has published a few of my articles in their previous issues. Plus, it also provides loads of tips for us….. the younger generation to be safe and alert to the dangers of this world. The opportunities are endless… so just GRAB THEM, KIDS!! Well, that’s all for now. DO enjoy this month’s issue. Have fun reading and watch out for the many contests and freebies. You may be a lucky winner!!! Below is a dedication to all the superkids out there. Especially to the tweens who are turning into teens!!! From the cot to a tot From a kid to a tween From a tween to a soon-to-be teen What an adventure it has been!! Treasure Childhood while it lasts You can’t rewind to the past Cherish each moment, don’t forward it fast We’re the cast, so make life a BLAST!! Signing off now…

Francine Yeap, the wacky tween who loves life and Superkidz… (12 years old, Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor)

Q: What are the three types of waves? A: Big waves, small waves and microwaves! Q: Why do bananas have to wear sunscreen? , A: Because if they don t and they play in the hot sun, they might peel! Contributed by Samuel (7) and sister Sammie (6)

I want to complain. I love my baby brother very much. So I don't mind sharing my toys and food with him. , But I don t like it when he drools over everything! Mum says babies , naturally drool a lot, but I think it s his “tactic” to take ownership of my toys! Suspicious brother Ivan (8)

I have a good idea for recycling to share with others. I read a lot of comic books and do a lot of activity books. So for my activity books, once I have completed all the activities inside I will bring them for recycling. For my comic books, I will keep some that I really like, and some I will exchange or give to my friends. So I can recycle and save money - two for the price of one! Kah Whei (7)

Sometimes kids just want to be heard and feel cared for. Read about , one Superkidz Club member s thoughts on parents and life at home. It may not be a happy read, but it tells of how some kids truly feel. Parents Do they understand children? Do they remember how most of their childhood was? No!! Most try to forget. This is what most children feel like now. Parents remember their happy moments but not the unhappy side (some). Children now are trying to forget the unhappy sides and remember the happy moments, which they hope would last for a long time. Hours and hours of jail. Huh!! Home and freedom is what most wish for. But anyway, we have to study to get smart. Back to home… “Honey, have you done your homework?” “Honey, I just received a complain from your teacher about your work.” Long winded and worried mother asking questions. Some children cry at night, alone. They have problems! Do they want to tell their parents? Some may not because who would want their parent to get worried. I would not tell my parents too, they will get worried. Advice: Parents, try spending more time with your kids, some might need you NOW!!! Care about them more often and your children will feel better. P.S - I am writing the truth. How I feel, how I spend time crying at night… secretly. Sophia Wong Sce Yeen, 10 years old

From the hugely popular action-adventure series BEN 10, Cartoon Network is presenting BEN 10: Race Against Time, a live-action made-for-TV CGI movie! So who is Ben? Well, Graham Phillips (of Evan Almighty fame) plays Ben Tennyson, a boy who with the flick of a powerful alien wristwatch (The Omnitrix), can turn into ten different aliens with amazing superpowers. With the help of Gwen (played by Haley Ramm of X-Men: The Last Stand), his level-headed cousin, and Grandpa Max (played by TV legend Lee Majors of The Six Million Dollar Man), he spent his whole summer in hero form like the powerful Heatblast or the beastly Wildmutt. After their summer adventures, when Ben is back to being a normal kid in his quiet hometown, together with Gwen, they slowly settle back into the routine of everyday life with family and friends. However, things don’t exactly seem the same, especially when Eon (played by Christien Anholt) Ben’s nemesis from another galaxy, shows up to claim the Omnitrix and plans to destroy Earth. Eon was the first alien ever captured by Grandpa Max’s secret organisation, The Plumbers. Now he has escaped and is trying to locate the doomsday device that was taken and hidden when he was captured. The device can open a gateway to Earth, which could mean the start of an alien invasion that would mark the end of humankind. Now Ben, Gwen and Grandpa Max, with some help from The Omnitrix, are on a mission to stop Eon and save the world from total destruction!

77 Hours is a 13-part reality series that transports Malaysian kids to different cultures and surroundings so they can experience different lifestyles firsthand. The stars of the reality show 77 Hours are local children. For three days, each of them will join a new family, participate in its livelihood and immerse in their customs and rituals. Being deprived of the comforts they might have taken for granted, the series chronicles their sometimes physically and emotionally challenging journeys of adventure and self-discovery. Experiencing a different 77 hours from their own, the show chronicles how each kid slowly reevaluates his or her own limitations and potential. Each episode is both entertaining and educational because you get to see how a short-term visit can foster long-term appreciation for another way of life. What’s more interesting is that the kids are exposed to lifestyles that they have never experienced before the show – urban kids immersed into rural life and vice versa. So what sort of activities do the reality show stars get to do? Well, they get to try their hands at things like helping at the paddy fields, preparing salted dried fish, living with an Australian family and even joining a politician on his trip! The new surroundings and daily routines can be the total opposite of what they are used to, but that’s the best part about it. They get to see life in a whole different light! 77 Hours does not just sound interesting, it is interesting! So set your remote control to ntv7 every Sunday, from 9pm to 9.30pm. Exemplary. Outstanding. Courageous. Are you a Superkid?

Exemplary. Outstanding. Are you a Superkid?

As a sign of their dedication to this project, the students even gave up their evenings, weekends and free time to rehearse. So through the tutors’ dedication and the drama team’s determination, they gained immense confidence in their English-speaking skills and subsequently became less shy. “The students also learned to be disciplined during practices, to work together harmoniously and through it all, they became more confident and outspoken,” added Mdm. Kor. “They have also gained an interest in reading English storybooks. Their enthusiasm soon rubbed off on their schoolmates who, subsequently, are also now speaking more English in school.

The DiGi Fu-Yoh! RAP (Read.Action.Play) 2008 competition saw 75 schools from four regions participating – an encouraging improvement from its humble beginnings two years ago where only 12 schools participated.

and Kwan Jia Ni. For their play, the team roped in the help of their headmaster, Mr Lim Geok Eong, who acted as the producer. Along with the assistance of their Drama Coach, Mr. Jason Ong Han Yee, Head of English Panel, Mdm Kor Hooi Yen and other tutors, they were able to get the right guidance and advice needed.

One measure of their success can be seen in this year’s winner - the team of SJK (C) Kwang Hwa, Butterworth who won with their play based on the folk-tale “The Waters of Olive Lake.” Curious as to how students from a Chinese school managed the great achievement of winning an English-based contest? Then read on and find out!

Actually, it was Mr. Lim and Mdm. Kor who grabbed the opportunity to take part in the competition as a way of exposing students to drama while creating an interest in the English language at their school. Using the Chinese folk-tale “The Waters of Olive Lake” helped as well, as the students were able to relate to it more easily. The drama team then started rehearsing and throwing ideas around for their stage play and Mdm. Kor helped to write the script.

DiGi RAP is a community development programme with a goal to develop the love for reading and for English among children, and to encourage more children to speak English. So as DiGi’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme for kids, it has done tremendously well. So, who were the people behind the winning entry for DiGi’s contest? While many played a part in its success, the core drama team of SJK (C) Kwang Hwa were made up of Lim Yi Fei, Lim Zhu Hen, Lee Phei Wen, Lim Khai Kim, Tan Xue Heng, Yoon Yit Sam, Ng Xian Zhu, Teh Jhia Jiat, Cheah Kai Jian, Lee Shone Kin, Lim Kai Jie

This took about a week, with the students injecting humour and some funny acts into the script as they went along. “We had a group of really talented students,” commented Mdm. Kor, “so acting was not a problem. However, the toughest challenge for the students was speaking English fluently. Most seldom speak English at home, let alone in school, so they got very tongue tied in the beginning of rehearsal. This (in general) is a major problem in Chinese schools, as most students prefer to speak in Mandarin.” As a solution, the tutors went through the script with each student word by word and then slowly taught them to sound more natural.

Raj Dev Kaur! Winners of K Studio Little PrinL SOGO Starz ce Pageant 2008

Hello my friends, my name is Raj Dev Kaur Sekhon, I am five years old. On the 10th of August 2008 (Sunday) Starz Studio organised "The Little Princess Pageant 2008" at SOGO KL. There were 16 finalists and I was one of the lucky ones, hehehe! I was there at 10.00am and Ms Carol Lee (from Starz Studio) helped us rehearse our routines for later that day. She is just so lovely, kind and caring. She taught us how to walk on the stage like a princess. After the rehearsal I went to try on my fittings for the casual and princess wear, which were provided by Starz Studio. Later on, I did my hair at D'cuts Sogo which was one of the sponsors. Oh, by the way, the main sponsor was Vitagen … they provided a lot of healthy refreshments. Before the pageant began, I played some games at the Vitagen booth which were very interesting. At 3pm the pageant started, and when it was my turn, I walked like a model with my casual wear and also introduced myself. There were five judges and some celebrities were among the judges. I know I have seen some of them on TV but I could only recognise uncle Harith Iskandar. Next was the talent performance. I danced to a Hindi song. All my 16 friends had their gifted talents and they all did very well.

Raj Dev Kaur with Ms Carol Lee of KL SOGO Starz Studio

The last event was the princess costume wear. I tried to walk slowly like a princess, hehehe. Before the announcement of winners, there were more games, clowns and a magic show. At the end, I was so excited and HAPPY because I was crowned MISS CROWNING GLORY 2008. My mum put the crown on me. I came back home with the princess crown, Trophy, a teddy bear, some goodie bags, a boxed gift and a RM500 voucher from Starz Studio. I had a great day. My special thanks goes to Ms Carol Lee from Starz Studio; she really looked like a real princess that day in her princess outfit, hehehe.

We are showcasing art creations from Superkidz Club members! In the May-June issue, we printed animal sketches by Superkidz Artwork Contributor, Diviyah A/P Suresh Kumar. We then asked members to colour in the cute chicken and adorable sea creatures. Here are some of the artistic works sent in. So to all other members, if you’d like us to showcase your beautiful colourings or drawings, don’t wait any longer! Send in your artwork soon and you may just see it here next time!

Let’s start making pretty flowers!

Step 1

Step 2

Twist one end of a chenille stem around the pencil several times. This will becomethe stigma (middle part) of the flower.

Step 3

Fold paper napkins in half, then another half and flatten them, so that you get a small triangular shape.

Step 4

Cut the folded paper napkins into a semi circle (as shown in the picture).

Wong Yuan Yu

Step 5 Open up the paper napkins, and you will get round paper napkins. Cut as many as you want to create the petals.

Edric Tan C h

en Ping

Cut a small hole in the centre of the circle (petals), and then insert the chenille stem through it.

Jovita Ann e

Once completed, if you want to create the ‘soft’ look, slightly crease or scrunch the paper napkins (petals) and reopen them. Now you can make as many as you like and create a bouquet of colourful flowers! Perfect as a gift for your parents, teachers or for that someone special (wink! wink!). 20

For fans of Barbie™, enjoy a sneak peek at the new movie Barbie™ & The Diamond Castle!

We begin far away, in a land of music and magic. There is a charming picture perfect cottage in the woods that is home to two best friends, Liana and Alexa. They share anything and everything, especially their love for singing. One day, they found two unusual heart-shaped stones. Feeling lucky, they wished on the stones… “Best friends today, tomorrow and always!” Unseen by the girls, the two Guardian Stones glimmer magically when the girls utter their pledge of friendship.

One day, deep in the forest, the girls give their lunch to an old woman. The old woman thanks them by giving the girls a tarnished hand mirror. Liana and Alexa clean the mirror and sing while they work. Suddenly, a third voice adds harmony to the song, coming from the mirror! There they see a beautiful young girl smiling back at them from within the mirror. She is mysterious and shy, then she tells them her name is Melody and teaches them a song. Melody reveals that she is an apprentice muse and the only one who has the key to the hidden Diamond Castle!

Melody explains to Liana and Alexa how there were once three muses who resided in the Diamond Castle, the home of all music. One of the muses, Lydia, decided she should be the only muse! Dori and Phaedra, the two good muses, used their musical instruments to hide the Diamond Castle from Lydia and gave the key to Melody. Angered, Lydia used her dark music’s evil power to turn Dori and Phaedra into stones! Melody hid in the old woman’s mirror with the key but did not know how to get back out. Now Lydia and her winged serpent, Slyder are searching for the muse apprentice in order to find the Diamond Castle.

Liana and Alexa agree to help Melody and go in search of the hidden Diamond Castle. The three friends begin their journey by heading west to the Valley of the Flowers where Liana and Alexa find two adorable puppies! Liana befriends the cuddly Cocker Spaniel and names her Sparkles! Alexa names the Westie puppy Lily.

Slyder and Lydia find the fellowship of friends. Lydia uses her sinister flute to put Liana and Alexa in a trance but the Guardian Stones around the girls’ necks are protecting them. For the first time, Lydia’s spell doesn’t work and everyone escapes! After that, many things happened along the way, and Liana and Alexa are separated from the others. They stop to rest at an enchanted manor. Alexa wants to stay forever but Liana wants to complete their journey, so they have their first huge fight. Liana leaves with the muse in the mirror. Alexa throws her necklace down to the floor and without her Guardian Stone, she is captured by Lydia.

Liana returns in time to break the evil enchantment on Alexa. Lydia then begins to use her dark music against the two girls who join in song with Melody. Their Guardian Stones glow magically. Lydia’s evil spell is no match for the power of friendship. She and Slyder are defeated! Music swells as the Diamond Castle rises from the ground. The key was the song of friendship.

The muses are no longer stone and they return to the Diamond Castle on magnificent winged horses. Melody is rewarded with a golden flute and is now a true muse. She will join Dori and Phaedra in the Diamond Castle. In gratitude, the muses crown Liana and Alexa as Princesses of Music. Their gowns magically transform into gem-encrusted gowns. Their Guardian Stones become pink and violet jewels, the even the puppies become sparkly!

Then the three muses present Liana and Alexa with fantastical diamond carriages pulled by glittering horses to return them to their magically restored cottage in the woods. And they remain best friends always!

Aerospace

Adventure Zone (AAZ)

Hi kids and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section will be dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Let’s start this first segment with a tour of the planets and our solar system. TRIVIA Bet you didn’t know these cool facts! Mars has frozen ice just a few centimetres under the soil’s surface. Did you know that the Phoenix Mission Lander that landed on Mars three months ago was fitted with a special scoop? When scientists started scooping a few weeks ago, they discovered frozen water under the Martian soil. Not only can Martians enjoy a cold drink (if they really exist!), but it means that in the future, if humans were to go to Mars, we’d have a source for drinking water. Plus, the water can also be turned into rocket fuel for the looooong trip back to earth. For more info on this mission, go to http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/ Just recently, the Cassini Satellite orbiting the planet Saturn discovered that one of Saturn’s largest moons called Enceladus is ejecting water (from under its icy surface) into space - like a giant fountain. This provides evidence as to how Saturn’s rings were formed and also suggests that there are huge oceans of liquid water locked under the surface of this strange moon. Why is that so important you ask? Well it’s possible that where there is water, there is life, and chances are, perhaps some sort of life has developed in the oceans under Enceladus’ icy surface. Saturn has 60 moons of different sizes. One of them, Titan, has a thick atmosphere like earth’s. Titan is the only moon in the solar system with an atmosphere, but it consists mainly of a gas called methane. The Huygens probe that recently landed on the surface of Titan photographed huge rivers and lakes of hydrocarbons (similar to gasoline used for cars). So smoking or barbecues on Titan are totally banned, or else there’d be a huge explosion! For more info on this mission, go to http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.cfm 26

We are protected from the sun’s harmful radiation by the magnetic field of Earth (the coolest planet in the solar system!). If Earth did not have a magnetic field, most life on Earth would cease to exist. All living things would be fried to a crisp - except maybe the weird stuff living at the bottom of the ocean! Mars does not have a magnetic field, so in future if humans go there, special efforts will have to be made to protect us from solar radiation. Next issue, we will be discussing that big glowing ball in the sky called the sun. Here are some questions for you to try. Answers will be revealed in the next issue of Superkidz magazine! What is the sun made of? How far is Earth from the Sun? How long does it take light to get from the Sun to Earth? How many Earths can you fit into the Sun? How long will the sun continue to shine?

Plastic and Aluminium Trivia

Bet you didn’t know these! So how much do you know about recycling? Let’s get the facts rolling! Fact 1 - Did you know what those little numbers (with arrows around them) found at the bottom of your plastic containers mean?

1 PETE

2 HDPE

3 V

4 LDPE

5 PP

6 PS

7 OTHER

PETE – Polyethylene Terephthalate The easiest of plastics to recycle. Often used for soda bottles, water bottles. it is recycled into bottles and polyester fibers.

HDPE - High density Polyethylene Readily recyclable. Mostly used for packaging detergents, bleach, milk containers, hair care products and motor oil. It is recycled into more bottles or bags.

PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride You can spot this everywhere - pipes, toys, furniture - you name it. Difficult to recycle and so PVC is a major environmental and health threat.

LDPE – Low-density Polyethylene Used for many different kinds of wrapping, grocery bags and sandwich bags and can be recycled into more of the same.

PP - Polypropylene Some clothing and bottles are made from this. It can be recycled into fibres.

PS - Polystyrene Polystyrene are major used in party cups and foam food trays. Polystyrene is a headache for its bulkiness yet very lightweight and isn't really worth recycling.

Others This could be a mixture of any and all of the above. It could also be plastics that are not readily recyclable such as polyurethane.

Fact 2 - Did you know that recycling one aluminium can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours? Fact 3 - 350,000 aluminium cans are produced every minute! Fact 4 - Did you know that during the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 12-ounce aluminium cans are being made? Fact 5 - An aluminium can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now. Fact 6 - Did you know that at one time, aluminium was more valuable than gold! Fact 7 - Did you know that each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water? This represents 64% in energy savings, 58% in water savings, and 60 pounds less air pollution! Fact 8 - Did you know that every month; we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper? All of these jars are recyclable! Fact 9 - Did you know that a modern glass bottle would take 4,000 years or more to decompose and even longer if it's in the landfill? 30

GET GET TO TO KNOW KNOW THE THE WACKY WACKY OLD OLD ME!!!!!!! ME!!!!!!! By Francine Yeap (12 years old, Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor) Hey there!! I’m sure you would like to know me! My name is Francine Yeap and I’m 12 years old. I go to the school where anything is possible to achieve….. Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor. I will be sitting for my UPSR examination this year. I have two younger sisters. Yes, I know… all girls. We fight a lot but we always forgive each other for the mistakes that we did causing the quarrel. I think that every kid should have this kind of attitude towards their older or younger sibling. It helps and develops a healthier and more loving relationship. I would like to be a journalist when I am older. Music plays a crucial part in my life. I love listening to music but most of all…. I love to play music!! I recently took up guitar lessons because I had an interest to learn music. Instead of only listening to music, I will also get to learn to write my own music and play it. Studies show that kids who can play music learn better in school. Besides that, I LOVE reading. Books that are fiction and non-fiction are both my favourites. I get to learn to write more creatively by reading fictional books and I gain knowledge by reading non-fictional books. Exercise is very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I like to jog, be active in sports activities in school and outdoor games as well. Exercise helps us keep ourselves fit and our minds get to think clearly. This helps us to focus when we are studying or just doing things which require brain power. My activities in school don’t just stop at sports. I like to take part in other activities as well. I joined choral speaking in Std 4 and 5. Choral speaking helps us learn to be disciplined and how to work as a team. I also like to take part in music competitions like singing and playing musical instruments. I also like dancing. I joined the ‘MY SCHOOL ROCKS’ competition last year with a few friends. We managed to get 6th in Selangor and 4th in the whole Malaysia. I guess you could say we were rocking the house down!!!! My parents are the best in the world! They are like superheroes. Trouble ahead??? Have no fear when mighty mum and dyno dad are near. They help us when we have trouble with our school work and things that we are unsure of. Later when they have explained things to us, we get to understand easier and we feel happier that we know the meaning. That’s all for now. If I were to tell you my life story, it would probably take hours and a lot more pages. Keep smiling and be happy all the time. As the saying goes….. DON’T WORRY, JUST BE HAPPY!!!!!!!!

Danny’s Wish By Chuan Xin Vee (12 years old)

What will you do if you are given one wish? Our minds will surely run wild with wishes of all kinds. To be a billionaire, having the ability to fly, getting a present we desire that we do not dare ask for or just have all the fun we want. Ahh - What a nice feeling. A greedy person like me would wish for endless wishes.

“What?” Danny couldn’t believe his ears. “8100791152, hi. I’m 88667700.” “Emm…Can you please tell me where I am? “ “Certainly!” The happy face replied. “Never!” angrily, another face replied. “*sob*” She continued sobbing. “519,” said that expressionless face. Danny was amused by them. Well, who are you people?” “Happie Man.” “Angry,” he seems to be angry for nothing. “Sobbee” “88667700” “I’m Danny, I would like to know where am I?” “Hogwarts….but much different from Hary Potter, you know,“ Happy Man smiled. “01101001100101, appointment, appointment…” 88667700 seems to be annoyed. “Oh, we got to go, some sort of person named err…Da…Darr…Dannee is waiting for us. Bye!” And off they ran up and down the hill until they were out of sight. “Weird. Another Danny.” Danny thought. “How I wish I am now sitting cosily in a big sofa, enjoying the sweets and the warmth of the room. “ Oops! He just pronounced the word ‘and.’ The spell is broken! What is he supposed to do? Danny was very sad. He cried bitterly under an old oak tree. Out of the blue, and really unexpectedly, on the grass formed a ‘D.’ D? Danny looked around but saw nothing and no one but trees and hills. An ‘O’, ‘W’ and ‘N’ joined in. ‘T’ and ‘H’ appeared too. Followed by ‘E’ and ‘S’. Another ‘T’, an ‘A’, ‘I’, ‘R’ and ‘S’ appeared.

A boy named Danny leads a happy life in his double-story house. One night, while he was asleep, a loud crack of the window woke him up from his slumber. He couldn’t believe that he is looking at ………an elf! The elf broke the silence first. “Greeeetin, ya very good boy,” he said in his funny accent,” I shal’ grant ya a wish. What d’ya want?” The very first thing that flashed in this sweet-tooth Danny is: Loads and loads of sweets and chocolates! After he told the elf his wish, the elf added, “Ya shal’ not say “And” or you won’t have any wish to be granted. Don’t be greedy.” And he climbed out of the window silently. “Hmm… where should I start? My, I’m going to enjoy myself! Wish for a lot of sweets, everything sweet!” He reminded himself not to utter “and.” And so, before he could blink his eyes again, Danny’s bedroom was filled with sweets, chocolates, snacks and ice-cream! He stuffed his mouth with chocolates first. “Delicious! Marvellous! Superb! Never like this before! I wish I am in fairyland, ha ha!” It was just a joke, but the wish had to be granted. Before Danny could finish his last bar of chocolate, he was thrown into a hole with blinding lights all around him and was teleported to somewhere he had never been before. Soon, he was surrounded by fairies. “I wish I was somewhere else!” Danny shouted, without thinking why. This time, he was sent away from the startled fairies to goodness knows where. He landed hard on the ground. A man of four faces appeared out of nowhere. “Greetings. A very good day to you,” said the first face. “Hey! What are you doin’ on my land! Shoo!” This time, an angry face said, “I don’t know, but I couldn’t stop my tears. I’m not crying. *sob* nice to *sob* see you…” Her voice was so sad that it almost made Danny cry. The next face was expressionless and said nothing but,” 8100791152, good day.”

Danny sat there and watched. DOWN THE STAIRS? Down the stairs! But what stairs? A smile touched his lips. He saw a flight of stairs leading underground. Danny leapt with joy. He ran down

down

down the stairs, only to find that it is endless. He looked at how far he had been. It would be impossible to get out again. “Hey, mate! Where are you heading to?” A voice came from the silence. Danny saw the most unusual person he had ever seen in his life. He had an oval-shaped head with a scarf tied around his neck. He was wearing a necktie, a tangerine and apple green shirt, a pair of shorts and a pair of pink boots. Danny tried hard not to laugh lest offend this stranger. “I’m trying to get out,” The oval-headed man looked at him for a while then said, “Are you Danny? The boy with wishes to grant? Why don’t you just wish you are out of here?” Danny told him the story from A to Z. He is getting comfortable with this odd little guy. “Oh….you have 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 stairs to finish. It takes about 10 years if you are patient enough. I have a shortcut .Slide down my tunnel and you will reach there within minutes.” He gave Danny a heart-shaped pillow to sit on and asked him to hold on tight. He gave him a push and Danny shot down the tunnel like a rocket. “Thanks a loooooooooooooot…”was Danny’s final words to the Egg Head. Danny was in an amazing speed. He shut his eyes and prayed quietly for his safety. Still holding onto the pillow, Danny fell on something soft. He was back in his room again! Surprisingly, dawn is still a long time to go. Hugging the pillow tightly in his arms, he fell into a deep sleep to get some rest he deserved. -The End-

Domino’s Pizza From dough to dough, Superkidz Club members and their parents got more than just a taste of what it takes to be a master pizzaiolo and baker extraordinaire. The second Kidz’ Day Out satisfied their hunger to learn first-hand the fine art of pizza and bread making and the science behind it.

A bus-full of hungry and excited kids, mums and dads made their first stop at the home of the classic hand-tossed pizza that started it all. The staff at Domino’s Pizza in Puchong graciously opened their kitchen for us to take a stab at hand-engineering crusts the Domino’s way. Hygiene was of utmost importance so hands were thoroughly washed and hair nets donned. We, pizza amateurs, patiently waited for our turn to “get messy” and knead the dough. Lucky for us, we didn’t have to toss the pizza dough into the air which would’ve most likely landed on the floor!

While some tried their hand at making twisty bread sticks, others had a blast kneading the dough and using their hands with all their might to fold dough balls in half over and over. We were taught to dust our working surface with a thin layer of flour, grab a dough ball and smash it out evenly with our palms (some using one on top of the other with their full body weight behind them!). It took a lot to smash the ball and flatten it into a round shape. Forming the dough into a flat circle wasn’t easy as it had to be about the same size as the size of the pan.

When the dough was stretched to its desired diameter, it was time to throw in the toppings – everything from pepperoni to Italian sausage, black olives, fresh green peppers, mushrooms, onions, pineapple, beef, ham and, of course, layers and layers of cheese – there was no stopping our little chefs from making a topping overload and a mountain of mouth-watering medley of ingredients. As soon as our creation was cooked fresh from the oven, we cut our pizzas, sprinkled some Parmesan & seasoning on it for a hearty, tasty feast! We even brought back some with us on the bus to nibble on!

High 5 Bread Town Kidz’ Day Out “If only all field trips were like these!” may as well have been the unified roar of our Superkidz Club families who gathered for a rare treat to taste and learn the secrets of the trade in making pizza and bread. Our pizza amateurs and baker wanna-be’s had more than their fill of knowledge, experience and bites at our Kidz’ Day Out!

With tummies full and taste buds satisfied, there was no stopping us from making our next stop at the world’s First Bread Museum as awarded by the Malaysia Book of Records. High 5 Bread Town wasn’t just another bread factory; it was a truly unique attraction and an architectural showcase of its RM100 million cutting-edge plant in Shah Alam. The floor size of the factory was enormous. This six-hectare masterpiece offered a fascinating and interesting interactive tour which not only displayed the latest state-of-the-art technology in bread production; it also showcased a walkthrough on the history of bread. First, we were shown a multimedia presentation on the history of bread making. Then, we went through the Machine Museum of bakery production. To enter, we had to say the magic words, “High Five!” And what was opened up to us was a fascinating world of bread-making that spans more than 5,000 years. The history of bread is told in colourful murals and interactive displays to give us a lively, hands-on experience. The delicious aroma of oven-fresh bread added an authentic touch that made our visit to High 5 Bread Town an even more unforgettable experience. We saw how bread was made and evolved from yesteryears - from the ancient Egypt through to the Iron Age, the Roman and Viking periods, right through the Industrial Revolution to the present day. We discovered how every era offers its own improvements in terms of grain quality, the milling and baking process, and the shape and texture of bread. We also browsed around an olden day bread shop and took note of the different types of bread from around the world. From there, we took a leisurely elevated 880-foot Skywalk Factory Tour which gave us an expansive overview of the largest stand-alone bakery plant in Southeast Asia in the present day. We strolled leisurely while we were shown the finer points of bread-making using state-of-the-art technology. After that, we were mesmerised by larger-than-life bread-making equipment like mixers and ovens. The tour was capped with the usual photography session with kids, mums and dads lining up and souvenir hunting at the retail outlet. All in all, it was a time of fun, excitement, learning and lots of eating for our whole families (And we even had a bite at Mcdonald’s at the end of it all!)! No wonder our Superkidz Club members are already signing up for their slots at the next Kidz’ Day Out to come! It has definitely become a “must experience” for the entire family!

Also recently, our Superkidz Club members got to enjoy the rib-tickling love story between two robots – one, an abandoned planet-cleaning, solar-powered machine and the other, an extra-terrestrial, laser gun-toting robot. The exclusive treat to our community of parents and kids told of how robots can teach humans how to be human again. Our visibly entertained audiences broke out in sporadic laughter amidst scenes from this animation from Academy Award® - winning writer-director, Andrew Stanton who had previously been involved in movies such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and Ratatouille. Wall.E was Superkidz Club’s third exclusive screening for its members following Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix and Ratatouille last year. Keep tuned in for the next one Superkidz! 36
