Learning from Toddlers Aloha! WOW! I am here, as this issue’s Guest Editor!! I am really, really honoured, delighted and thrilled to be selected. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the news that I am part of the Junior Editorial Staff. Superkidz is a platform for kids, tweens or teenagers to discover their talents in art, story writing, photography or just being imaginative and let their creative juices flow in coming up with interesting and fun games, puzzles and activities. Plus, Superkidz members like me get to enjoy rewards and enter contests. And that, is cool and fun. So to those who are not yet a Superkidz member, what exactly are you waiting for? “Goo-Chuck!” Oh, that is my little cousin, Jia Jun playing with my brother and sister. I must say, that one phase of life is totally stress-free and all-play-no-work is, of course being a toddler. According to the dictionary, 'toddler' is a common term for a young child who is learning how to walk. The toddling stage is generally considered to be the stage of development between infancy and childhood. And this stage is when you are your cutest and innocent self. Toddlers also seem to be a magnet of attention. Every time Jia Jun, my little cousin enters a house full of visitors or guests, it is not surprising to see him surrounded by people pinching his chubby little cheeks or talking to him in the “baby language”. I guess he must be wondering why everyone made a big fuss over him and why he is always the centre of attention. He really is one cute boy. A toddler’s first word most often occurs around 12 months, but this is only an average. Around the age of 18 months, Jia Jun had steadily expanded his vocabulary as he learnt many words everyday. He then begun to incorporate two-word phrases into his dictionary, he became very proficient at conveying their wants and needs to others in a verbal fashion. At one visit, he surprised me by making longer sentences. I am sure you adore and have a soft spot for toddlers just as much as I do. Love them, and you may realise that they can be your teachers, too! One important lesson that I have learnt from them is to be optimistic and show enthusiasm towards life. They can find joy in every little thing they do. You can love like you have never been hurt, sing and dance like you do when nobody’s watching, and work like you don’t need the money or reward. So, remember to see the brighter side of life and to also smile to the world!

Speak Up Let kids be heard!

National Service will usually illicit one of two extreme reactions. Its either you are thrilled OR you are horrified. Upon receiving confirmation that I was among those selected - I was horrified. I was convinced that brainwashing, torture and endless torments of untold proportions awaited me. How was I going to live without television, comic books, mall trips, my stuffed animals, the washing machine, my hand-phone and countless other essential things I required to survive? I had never lived away from home, apart from my creature comforts, my entire life. To say I was shocked was an understatement, really.

But you know what? I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything. Don’t misunderstand me though; my experience was not picture perfect. There were plenty of things I found fault with while I was part of National Service. However, to give credit where credit is due – it was not a complete and utter waste of time. During my three months in NS, I gained more selfconfidence and felt as though I was contributing in a small way by taking part in community service. I made friends from various states in the country and learned that I was able to live without the ‘necessities’ of life as I previously thought. However, I faced many issues which made it difficult for me to reflect upon my time at NS in a completely positive light. National Service officially has several main objectives which were • Develop a young generation who are patriotic and with love for their country • Enhance unity among the multi-racial communities in the country • Instil a spirit of caring and volunteerism among society • Produce an active, intelligent and confident generation • Develop positive characteristics among the younger generation through good values • Develop a generation that will always obey the current government

Sadly, I felt that most of the objectives were not met since the syllabus did not have any way to ensure the objectives were met. 8

MAR-APR 2009

Spouting that we must all be patriotic does not make us so. Simply throwing several hundred teenagers together and hoping they will befriend one another regardless of race and background was unrealistic. I was among the few who mingled with every ‘group’ while most merely stuck to their ‘gangs’ usually made up of those from the same race. It was disappointing to see so clearly the lines which divided my generation despite constant assurance that we have never been as united as countrymen.

Speak Up

Let kids be heard!

Making us pick up rubbish and spend time with the elderly for a few days doesn’t ensure that we are kind. Having us spend days marching, trekking through woods and listening to lectures does not guarantee intelligence. Good values read from the textbook they gave us does not develop positive characteristics nor does telling us that our government does things with our best interests at heart. That does not make certain that we will always obey them. I felt the objectives expected (and still expect) too much from a short three-month stint. Honestly, I believe I would have gotten more out of such an experience had it been for a longer period, such as six months or even one year. Three months is hardly enough time to come away as a well rounded, intelligent, confident teenager when there are so many more things to consider. Teenagers, 16 and 17 years old, are not clean slates. They have experiences and those will affect how they grow within the time frame of National Service. While at that age, they may still be impressionable and can be moulded. But there are forces that may work against the NS objectives. Peer pressure, for example. Being part of the group and being accepted is important to many teenagers. If they believe being a ‘good’ girl or boy in NS will make them unpopular, then they won’t be as cooperative. Furthermore, treatment of these teenagers sometimes left something to be desired. The trainers wanted our cooperation instantaneously for anything they decided but, a lot of times, there was little motivation. We were separated from our families and friends in a foreign environment, many for the first time in their lives, yet some trainers were not always sympathetic and understanding. The food was at times difficult to eat as our taste buds were not accustomed to the local fare or food which was prepared. I know there were many who lost quite a bit of weight during their time in NS, as they could not force themselves to eat the food. Not only that, medical treatment while I took part in NS was lacking. I fell extremely ill for a week before my trainer grew concerned as the medicine given by the medical staff on hand did nothing to ease my symptoms. There was no proper doctor on hand to treat me and I was forced to wait for the trainers to decide I was ill enough to be brought to the hospital where they weren’t sure if I had dengue or not. My mother eventually had to come herself and fought with the trainers to have me treated by my own doctor when she found out how much weight I had lost

and that I had not been able to eat anything while I was ill. Another thing that concerned me was how I knew boys had faked being ill so that they could get medicine to get buzzed on. I do not regret taking part in National Service. I only know that it could have and should have been made better and needs to be coupled with better facilities, syllabus and competent trainers. Also, if the government honestly wants to mould the generations to be well-rounded good people, then each and everyone needs to be enrolled for the program each year. Not just one out of five. That said, I have come away with lovely memories and experiences. I shall always fondly recall how my platoon won the marching competition held, the woods which were glorious with their untouched beauty as we trekked through them, instances where my non-Malay friends would translate the conversation taking place so I wouldn’t feel left out, the times when my friends and I went through the training obstacles and laughed when we failed to overcome them, the moments when I felt as though I was flying on the flying fox and everything seemed to fall silent. National Service was not, and in my opinion, still not nearly up to par. Regardless of that fact, it is not difficult to consider it as a sort of rite of passage. We knew we were no longer children, that we had skills to care for ourselves, that we were capable and strong, and most of all – being there, we knew without a doubt that we were all Malaysians.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series Jane Walker

Price: RM49.90 each Reading level: 8 – 12 years old

Boys don’t keep diaries - or do they? The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series will surely dispel this ‘myth.’ It is a new school year and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with taller, meaner kids who are already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready to do so are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary. In book one, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Greg is happy to have his sidekick Rowley with him. However, when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage. This kicks off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion. The second book, Rodrick Rules, chronicles Greg’s attempts to navigate the hazards of middle school, impress the girls, steer clear of the school talent show, and most importantly, keep his secret safe. What secret you ask? Well, all will be revealed in the book. In the latest book, The Last Straw, it is obvious Greg will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and so enlists Greg in organised sports and other “manly” activities. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. When Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy though, Greg realises he has to shape up, or get shipped out – yikes!

Twilight Saga series Stephenie Meyer

Price range: RM35.50 - RM49.90 each Reading level: 10 – 13 years old

Twilight is a series of vampire-based fiction following the adventures of Isabella Swan. A teenager who moves to Forks, Washington, Isabella finds her life turned upside down when she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. In the second book New Moon, the story of the ‘star-crossed’ lovers continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles. These include a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire, and a deliciously sinister encounter with the Volturi, Italy’s reigning royal family of vampires. In Eclipse, Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a vampire continues her quest for revenge. Once again, Bella finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob, her werewolf friend - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampires and werewolves. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death… But which is which? Breaking Dawn, the fourth and last novel, is divided into three parts. Part 1 and 3 are told from the perspective of Bella Swan, while Part 2 is from the perspective of Jacob. Bella’s choice to either join the dark world of vampires or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hang.

Tennis Star on the rise Hailing from Sabah, a young lad is etching a name for himself in the tennis arena. Mohd. Fazree bin Said first started playing tennis at nine years old, but it was not a ‘voluntary’ decision. “At first, my dad (Said bin Norbinsha) had to force me to play. Then, slowly I became more interested in tennis and grew to love the game after a few months of playing. I have not stopped loving it till today,” remarked Fazree. Now at 19 years old, Fazree is not only playing the game but making a name for himself in the arena as well. Today, Fazree is ranked 1st in the National Junior category and 6th in the National Senior category. Last year alone, he won the SportExcel Milo Under-18 National in Kuala Lumpur (Singles and Doubles categories), Open Championship Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan (Mixed Doubles) and the 37th Borneo Regional Tennis Championship (Singles and Group categories). “I’ve good memories of all the tournaments I’ve competed in, but for me the most memorable is the Port Dickson Open where I played with Jawariah Noordin and won,” commented Fazree. The turning point for Fazree came in 2001, when he was offered a place at the Sekolah Sukan Bandar Penawar in Johor. As he was still quite young then, his parents were a little concerned about sending him there alone. Fazree, however, stood firm in his decision to go, and so, in the end, they relented. It turned out to be the right decision, as he was able to learn and hone his skills there. “I wasn’t worried about being alone,” stated Fazree. “In fact I’m glad I enrolled in the school to improve my tennis, or else I wouldn’t be what or who I am today.” After joining the school and winning a range of different tournaments, Fazree proved his aptitude, and in 2004, was subsequently qualified to be moved to the Bukit Jalil Sports Academy in Kuala Lumpur. In fact, since he started playing competitively in 2001, Fazree has won almost all of the tournaments (in respective categories) he played in, consecutively winning no less than three every year. Not only that, so far he has also thrice represented Malaysia at the Junior Davis Cup Championship. Furthermore, he now joins an elite group of tennis players as a member of Malaysia’s national backup squad. That is quite an accomplishment for a young lad! “Everyone loves to win. The way I see it, winning gives me the confidence (in my abilities) and playing gives me the satisfaction,” stated Fazree.

What is more amazing is that both of Fazree’s younger brothers are also etching a name for themselves in the local tennis scene. At 14 years old, Faeez is ranked 1st in the Junior category (Sabah) and is the champion in both Sandakan Men’s Singles and Doubles categories. Their youngest sibling, Faezzam, on the other hand, is already ranked 1st in the Junior Under-12 category (Sabah) at only 11 years old. It seems tennis is all the craze in the family! “Of course, me being the eldest,

In fact during the earlier years, Mr. Said played the role of mentor, coach and sparring partner to his three sons. The sacrifice and dedication these parents have shown for their children is evident in their sons’ accomplishments. Fazree added, “Our parents always help us with our time management, like preparing our schedules between school and training. My dad motivates us a lot as well. He always says: (if you play well then) good reward, good return.” “To succeed or achieve something, I think it’s all about hard work and putting in the effort in what you do. That, and a little bit of talent,” remarked the humble teen. “Tennis is something I’d like to pursue as a career after my studies. I haven’t really decided yet, but I think I’d like to become a coach. That way I’d be able to share my talent and experience with young players, and encourage them to get (more) involved in tennis.” Ambitious yet humble. Talented yet hard working. Young yet passionate. These are the traits of Fazree, a star in the making and a Superkid!

I think I’m the better player, haha!” Fazree jokingly said. “Seriously though, I enjoy playing with my brothers, but not in a competitive way. We really enjoy practicing together.” To excel in anything, one must be dedicated. Apart from the dedication shown by the three siblings, their parents Said bin Norbinsha and Rosni Syukur also played a major role in honing their talents. For years now, their father Said bin Norbinsha would get up early every morning and drive them to their tennis sessions. The devoted and committed father strongly believes that through hard work, one will succeed.

CONFESSIONS OF A

SHOPAHOLIC Based on the best-selling “Shopaholic” novels by Sophie Kinsella, Confessions of A Shopaholic follows the hilarious adventures of a confirmed shopping addict who tries to hide her weakness for shopping. In the fabulously glamorous world of New York City, 25-year-old Rebecca Bloomwood (ISLA FISHER) lives with her best friend Suze (KRYSTEN RITTER) in a fashionable part of town. Rebecca is a fun-loving girl who is really good at shopping. Actually, a little too good at it!

Trivia:

• • • • • •

Sophie Kinsella’s “Shopaholic” series has sold more than 15 million books worldwide. Sophie Kinsella is a pseudonym; her real name is Madeleine Wickham. Although Madeleine had previously published other books under her real name, her Kinsella books were much more popular, and hence she has stuck with the pseudonym. Isla Fisher’s first name is pronounced ‘Eye-Lah’, and her red hair is her trademark. Despite being born in Oman (an Arab country), both of Isla’s parents are Scottish. Besides acting, Krysten Ritter is an avid writer and musician. Krysten plays the guitar, writes songs and sings in the New York City band ‘Ex Vivian’.

She dreams of working for her favourite fashion magazine, but cannot quite get her foot in the door. In a funny twist, Rebecca gets a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine, published by the same company of the fashion magazine. As her dreams are finally coming true, she goes to ever more hilarious and extreme efforts to keep her past (and ever-growing shopping debt) from ruining her future.

It is a place devoid of natural light and is powered solely by electricity – “a star in the darkness”. Built as a refuge for humanity, the City is powered by a massive generator and will only sustain them for 200 years. Based on the book by Kate DiCamillo, The Tale of Despereaux tells of Tiny Despereaux Tilling (voice over by MATTHEW BRODERICK) who was born too brave for the timid place. From the moment he came into this world, with his eyes wide open and his big ears perked up for a story, he saw more and heard more than anyone else. He couldn’t help but hunger for adventure and couldn’t imagine a life without it. One day, our little brave mouse snuck into the royal library. There, he learned to read and revelled in stories of knights he wanted to join, dragons he wished to battle and fair maidens he dreamed of rescuing. While in the castle, he befriended a Princess named Pea (voice over by EMMA WATSON), who longed to escape the doldrums that settled over her listless world since her mother died. Pea’s father and the entire kingdom were stuck in mourning. Once his actions were discovered by his fellow mice, Despereaux was banished from the safety of Mouseworld to the vicious Ratworld, a place where light never penetrated. There, he was rescued by another outcast, the rat Roscuro (voice over by DUSTIN HOFFMAN), who is also a connoisseur of fine food and global travels. However in a twist of events, Roscuro plotted with the serving girl Miggery Sow (voice over by TRACEY ULLMAN) and kidnapped Pea. Despereaux discovered he, alone, could rescue her, and along the way discover that even the tiniest mouse could find the courage of a knight in shining armour. International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009)

● Galileo Galilei 400 years ago, a guy called Galileo who lived in Italy did something very special. He pointed his newly-finished telescope towards the night sky for the first time, and boy, was he in for a surprise!

Galileo was one of the great scientists of his time. He actually invented all sorts of things, even some of the science we use today in our school books. Probably the thing he was most famous for was the telescope. But hang on - did he really invent the telescope? Well, not exactly. The first person, as far as we know, was a German named Hans Lipperhey. In 1608, he applied for a patent for his new invention that he claimed to be “a certain device by means of which all things at a very great distance can be seen as if they were nearby, by looking through glasses (old word for lens).” He was never given his patent, because, at the same time, others also claimed that they invented the telescope. All we know is that Lipperhey was the first person to apply for a patent. Galileo was very interested in the design of the telescope, but thought he could do better. He built his own telescope with many improvements in the optical quality of the lenses. In 1609, he first used his telescope to observe the night sky. It was a great moment in science because it was the first time a human had ever used a scientific instrument to see more clearly what was beyond Earth. In the years that followed, Galileo made even more powerful telescopes and discovered many amazing things that made him wonder. He saw that the moon wasn’t as smooth as it looks, but rather covered with mountains and craters. He observed sunspots moving over the face of the sun, strange points of light moving in regular paths around the planet Jupiter and, perhaps most importantly, observed that the planet Venus had phases just like the moon.

Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system. At that time most people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe and everything including the sun moved around it. It might seem a little silly in this day and age, but people long ago really thought it was true. However, Galileo knew that if Venus had phases like the moon, then Earth could not be at the centre of the Universe. He wrote about his idea saying that the sun was, in fact, at the centre, not the Earth. Many very important people including church leaders were very angry with Galileo for suggesting this. In fact, they got so mad with him that they locked him in his house for most of his life. The only way they would had let him free was if he gave up his idea of the sun-centred universe. However, Galileo knew it was true so he could not back down. The church leaders never really admitted they were wrong for hundreds of years even after Galileo’s death. This year, 400 years after Galileo pointed his telescope toward the sky; the International Astronomical Union has decided to hold a worldwide celebration of astronomy. The Aerospace Education Services will be conducting a special series of activities to help celebrate this special event. In the coming issues, we will also be taking an in-depth look at some famous astronomers and the amazing things they discovered. We will also be taking you on a voyage to the most unbelievable places the universe has to offer. It will blow your mind, so stay tuned!

Some cool facts •

The Earth is spinning around its axis. At the equator, the Earth's surface moves 40,000 kilometres in 24 hours. That is a speed of about 1,040 miles per hour (1,670 km per hour or 0.5 km per second). This is calculated by dividing the circumference of the Earth at the equator (about 24,900 miles or 40,070 km) by the number of hours in a day (24). As you move toward either pole, this speed decreases to almost zero as the circumference of the spinning circle at the extreme latitudes approaches zero.

On average, the Earth orbits 93 million miles (149,600,000 km) from the sun, taking one year to complete an orbit. This distance is defined as one Astronomical Unit (AU). The Earth revolves around the sun at a speed of about 18.5 miles per second (30 km/ sec) or 108,000km per hour.

The sun is about 26,000 light-years from the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is about 80,000 to 120,000 light-years across (and less than 7,000 light-years thick). We are located on one of its spiral arms, out towards the edge. It takes the sun (and our solar system) roughly 200-250 million years to orbit once around the Milky Way. In this orbit, we (and the rest of the Solar System) are travelling at a velocity of about 155 miles per second (250 km/sec) or nearly a 100,000,000km per hour. That’s really fast!

Cool Experiments – Try it!

Crystal Magic

Here is an awesome experiment for you to try! But you will need your parents’ help during preparation, as you will need to use hot water. Step 1. First, cut off the top of the water bottle near the neck of the bottle. Step 2. Take the paper clip and tie the cotton thread to the paper clip. Step 3. Now take the satay stick and tie the other end of the cotton thread to the middle of the satay stick. Make sure that the length between the satay stick and the paper clip is such that when the satay stick is placed on the top of your bottle, the paper clip hangs about 1 cm clear of the bottom of the bottle.

You will need the following materials. •1x small water bottle •1x satay stick •Short length of cotton thread about 15cm •1x paper clip •A packet of salt •A pair of scissors •Hot water

+

Step 4. Now, you need to make your crystal solution. Pour some boiling water into a glass or clear plastic container. *Get mum or dad to help you here. Step 5. Carefully add regular salt to the solution and stir until dissolved. Keep adding salt and stirring. You will need to add quite a bit of salt to the solution. Eventually, you will notice that the salt you are adding no longer dissolves. You now have what is called a super saturated solution of salt and water.

Small Water Bottle

+ +

Step 6. Carefully pour your super saturated solution into the bottle you prepared previously. You only need to fill the bottle about half way. Step 7. Once done, place the satay stick across the top of the bottle so the paper clip and some of the cotton thread is immersed in the salt solution. Now you have to put the experiment somewhere safe, such as on a book shelf or in a corner where it will not be disturbed. After a few days, you should see something begin to happen in your solution. Be careful not to disturb the solution because this will slow down the crystal growth. In two weeks’ time you should be able to see clusters of salt crystal growing on the cotton thread and also at the bottom of the bottle. Can you explain what is happening? Or how you can grow bigger crystals? Watch out for future issues for the answers!

how to help your parents save Hey kids, you have probably heard your parents talking about the global financial crisis or seen it on the news. Did you know that you can also play your part to help your parents save money?

Here are some tips on what you can do: • Less waste: Remember to switch off the lights, fan or air-conditioner when you leave the room to save electricity. Always turn off the tap when you have finished, and if you see a dripping tap or leak, make sure you tell your mum or dad. Not only will you be saving on the electricity and water bills but you also consume less of the resources and help the environment. • Less talk: Use the telephone only when you have to. Did you have to make that call to your friend to talk about the latest movie or computer game? Phone calls can be expensive so spend less time chatting on the phone. • Less extras: Think before you spend your pocket money on the little extras – sweets, snacks, comic books, toys. • Plan your spending: Sit down with your mum or dad and plan your weekly spending. List down how much you need to spend each day and how much you can save. • Open a savings account: If you don’t already have a savings account, ask your parents to open an account for you, and each week, you can take your savings to the bank and watch your money grow.

32

MAR-APR 2009

• Needs and wants: Before you buy anything, think about whether you need it or you want it. If you cannot live without it, then buy it. But if it is something that would be nice to have, then maybe you could buy it at another time or buy something else which may be cheaper. • Bargain hunting: If you must buy, consider if there is a cheaper alternative. Perhaps you don’t need to get that particular brand of shoes or clothes and a less expensive brand will be just as good. • Recycle: You can play your part to save the environment and also earn some extra pocket money by collecting cans, paper, cardboard and bottles to be recycled. • Get crafty: Make birthday cards and gifts for friends.

Contest

Experience The School Holiday With Disney On Ice!

Armed with the magic that makes everyone feel like a kid again, families in Malaysia have been treated to live entertainment experiences that thrill, dazzle, delight and keep them coming back for more! Since its first performance in 1999, Disney on Ice has masterfully recreated and brought to life classic Disney stories and the new generation Disney/Pixar stories in its productions of 100 Years of Disney Magic, Beauty & The Beast, Princess Classics, The Magical World of Disney on Ice, Finding Nemo and the recent Mickey & Minnie’s Amazing Journey. Now celebrating ten magical years of Disney on Ice in Malaysia, Tinker Bell is going to whisk audiences away on breathtaking stories of seven Disney Princesses and heir inspiring wishes. Aptly named Princess Wishes, the production recreates the defining moments when the wishes of seven Disney princesses are fulfilled. With Tinker Bell as their guide,

guests will see the inspiring stories of Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Mulan, Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and witness their wishes being granted, their dreams coming true.

Ariel’s dreams are unlocked from under the sea and, in one magical moment, she finds happiness in an exploration above the waves. Mulan will teach the audience about inner strength, while Jasmine discovers a whole new world. Snow White will also find her one true love. Through artistic skating and graceful acrobatics, this beautiful performance will also reveal the deepest wishes of Cinderella, Belle and Sleeping Beauty. Focusing on the moments where the princesses’ dreams come true, the show uses high-energy music, dazzling sets and dramatic choreography to make it a truly breathtaking experience.

The search, organised by Kidz and Superkidz magazines and sponsored by Barbie®, involved the selection of the cutest little Barbie princesses from photos of kindergarteners and pre-schoolers. Grand prizes worth RM800, RM500 and RM300 were awarded to the first, second and third placers respectively while consolation prizes worth RM100 of Barbie® products were also given out to the following:

2nd Place – Angelene (Taska Desa Petaling)

Consolation Prize winners and Clarissa Choa Lind-sey (Musikhaus Enrichment Centre)

3rd Place - Harleen Dev Kaur Sekhon (Smart Reader Kids USJ 21)

Special thanks go to Smart Reader Kids USJ 21 and its Principal, Susan Lim, for rallying their students to take part in the contest which saw most of the winners coming from that centre. Man-goes-teen By Superkidz Club member Chuan Xin Vee (13 years old, SMK USJ 12 school) Xi in nV us o ee ( c right) with her

I

picked up a mangosteen and stared at it. I cradled the purple, aged-looking fruit in my fingers. Hmm….Why call it ‘Mangosteen’? There must be a story behind it. I went up to ask my elf mother one day how this fruit got its name. She seemed pleased at my curiosity as she loves telling stories, especially those that are not commonly heard of. Ah, I am always ready to hear stories from a great storyteller like my mum. I grabbed a stool covered in bright, pink spots and sat while sucking a lollipop that had the cute design of a goblin sticking out his tongue. Mother cleared her throat and began her story. “It was said that long, long time ago, even before you were born,” Mother said while adjusting her hair, “A witch got a brainwave and invented a purplish potion that could make any living men in the world younger!” My eyes sparkled at that thought. Younger? How cool is that to be able to replay your teenagehood?? “….and as soon as the potion was up for grabs, men from far and near bought it and it was later called ‘Amipolania’ which means ‘young at all ages’ in the elf language,” She continued, “News about Amipolania spread like wildfire by word of mouth…” “Wow, mum! Did you give it a try?” I wondered aloud, before I can stop myself from interrupting. “No, Amipolania is only for men! Plus, Amipolania only makes an individual FEEL younger. They were still the same as before!” I was trying to picture people from all over the world feeling and acting younger. How the streets were filled with both ‘natural teenagers’ and ‘Amipolania-made teenagers’. And Mother finished the story of Amipolania. She said that a man named Rhazally bought dozens of them. He followed the instructions on the label of the bottle. First, he stirred the potion seven times. Then, he did like he was told by the instruction: Concentrate hard on the wish of getting younger and stir three times again for better results. Amipolania was a darker purple when he was done. He finished it in a few gulps. He felt an electric wave sweep through him from his head to the tips of his toes. And the next thing he knew, he was grinning form ear to ear as he looked at himself in the mirror. Feeling younger, younger, YOUNGER! 38

MAR-APR 2009

He was elated! “A young, strong prince is born to conquer the world! Muahahahahaha…” Rhazally was feeling on top of the world as he danced about the house in graceful steps. His hand hit a green bean that fell into the Amipolania! The potion was shaking violently until everything on the table fell hard onto the ground. Rhazally’s smile faded almost instantly. He was stunned and stood there, numb, his jaw fell open. Glasses, flower vases, plates, coffee cups, saucers, papers were a big mess on the carpeted floor. Rhazally could feel himself shaking. All of a sudden, a tree was growing rapidly out from the container! Rhazally was shocked beyond words. Never in his life had he witnessed such weird and unexplainable thing happen. Finally after what seemed like ages to Rhazally, the shaking stopped. Nothing else was moving. He had forgotten how to breathe. A tree bearing fruits was there before his eyes. Mother said that nobody is certain how this fruit got here, or what Rhazally did next. If I were to be him, I would have passed out and I wouldn’t know anything! I chuckled at myself. Someone then changed Amipolania into mangosteen, (‘Man-goesteen’). It really looked like an aged man trying to be young by doing things like dying his hair into a young colour, green. So this is how it got its name. “Mum?” I asked. “Yes, dear?” “I have a question, has dad consumed Amipolania?” Mother avoided my eyes, “Dad?Ami-? Don’t ask this sort of question, you better get going now that dinner’s ready.” She finished in a rush. Until now I am still pondering, is dad…… has dad attempted to feel younger with Amipolania?

The End.

The Mummy’s Curse

By James Kyle Rodriguez Medina (11 years old; Primary 5, Sayfol International School)

Once upon a time, in a land called Agaland, there was a horrible curse going on, a mummy’s curse that made all its residents live in great fear. This was a big problem for everyone in Agaland. Every day and night, women and children would hide in their homes, while the mummy terrorised the land. Nobody was brave enough to fight against the dreaded mummy, except for one brave man called Jonathan Statrek. Each and every day, Jonathan would hunt for the mummy, but it was not to be defeated. One day, all the children in Agaland disappeared! They had all been captured by the mummy. Nobody else knew what to do. It was then that Jonathan realised that it was up to him to save Agaland and the children! So now Jonathan Statrek prepared all his weapons - lots of them - to defeat the mummy. So he left everyone and searched for the hideous mummy out into the dark, creepy woods. In a moment or two, Jonathan heard a mysterious sound. Suddenly, strange monster-like creatures appeared out of nowhere. They seemed to be the mummy’s evil minions. So then, Jonathan took out his two weapons, his gun and his sword. He fought them off and they were no match for him. Not one bit. Soon, they were all finally defeated. Jonathan finally found the children and the evil mummy. When he had seen that the mummy wasn’t watching, he quietly untied the poor, frightened children and set them free. Just right after he saved them all, the mummy caught Jonathan! “Hey! What are you doing here, trespasser?” exclaimed the mummy. “You’re stealing my witnesses!” “It was you who stole them all from our land!” yelled Jonathan. “Well, I live in this land, too, so I can invade it,” argued the mummy. “Well, you can’t invade it any longer, because you have lost! So goodbye and good riddance!” Jonathan insisted. “Ha! Ha! Ha! I haven’t lost yet!” replied the mummy. “I still need a fight!” “You can’t just leave without challenging me. If you win, good luck for you, but if you lose, I will continue invading Agaland! Good luck, hero.” “Alright then, let’s do it,” dared Jonathan. So then the mummy and Jonathan started fighting each other. The mummy kept on hitting and hitting poor Jonathan. By now, Jonathan was really, badly hurt. But Jonathan just suddenly stood up again. Then he took out his long gun and shot the mummy right in the face. He quickly ran to the mummy, took out his knife, stabbed the mummy in the chest, and then in the heart. Then, he took out his long and mighty sword, chopped off the mummy’s head, and finally killed the dreaded mummy! Its curse no longer had power over Agaland. Jonathan returned home happily. When he got home, he had already seen that all the children were back with their families, and everyone was so glad. He told everyone the news about how he defeated the mummy. Everyone cheered out loud for Jonathan and Jonathan was really glad too. From then on, nobody in Agaland was ever again afraid to come out of their homes because of their hero, Jonathan Statrek. Peace finally prevailed in Agaland. And they all lived happily, ever after.

THE END.
