Bei ng a Bo okworm Pays Off I am feeling at the top of the world, having been chosen as the guest editor for Superkidz Magazine. For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to read. From the tender age of two, I was enchanted by the magical world of books, as if I am actually there with the characters. When I read Roald Dahl's BFG, it felt as if I was with Sophie and the BFG, blowing dreams into the Queen's window. It is the same with Nancy Drew, feeling the icy grip of fear on my heart as she finds the door locked, with no hope of escape. My parents thoroughly encouraged my love to read all through the years. When I was younger, my mother would read to me every night, instilling my love for reading. As I got older, much of my addiction to books has been satisfie d by my dad who, as the sole breadwinner of the family, spends most of his time travelin g overseas. Despite his busy schedule, he never fails to return home with a few of the latest books from England or the United States. Whenever that happens, it means little sleep for me till I finish at least one of the many books while my mother nags me to sleep. Despite it being late into the night, I find it so difficult to put the book down. My dad also tolerated my constant nagging during the weeken ds, when I would ask him to bring me to some bookstores. I remember our most recent adventure when I asked him for the latest book by Stephenie Meyer, visiting one bookst ore to another yet leaving disappointed to find them all sold out. We searched almost every bookstore in KL and when we failed; my dad got a copy for me from a bookstore in Singapore two days later when he happened to go there for business. My dad certainly has gone the extra mile, and now as the guest Editor for Superkidz, I get to fulfill a lifelong dream to be an author and have my very own story published. I invite you to read my story entitled “No Place Like Home”. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I feel privileged for this opportunity to be the guest editor, an honour which would never have come true if not for my wonderful parents and teachers.

Speak Up Let kids be heard!

I know that we’re supposed to recycle and love the Earth and all that. But then… My mum is really into it and she keeps everything to be recycled or reused at home – water bottles, newspapers, tin cans… everything! Problem is, she doesn’t get rid of these stuff regularly, so the house looks like a dumpsite! It looks ugly and a family of rats even made a home among the piles of recyclables – yuck! So to those who want to do their part – be sure you are diligent in actually recycling, not just collecting!

I wish school days were more like school holidays. During school time, I just sit there, listen to the teachers and do boring homework. During the school holidays, I get to go fishing with my dad, join a self-discovery camp in the jungle, learn how to bake with my mum and many many maaaaanny more things. It’s like I get to learn more things when I’m not in school – how ironic!

Bored with school (9)

My friend said she didn’t want to be my best friend anymore because I don’t share my toys with her. I felt very sad and wanted to cry, but mummy says I’m a big girl so I cannot cry all the time. So I told my friend I will share some of my toys with her and she said okay, so now I am happy again.

You know, my parents keep telling me I’m a failure at everything I do. If I get 95 marks in my test, my mum’ll ask why I didn’t get full marks. When I won the silver medal for the 100m dash during my school sports day, my dad asked why I didn’t win the gold medal. When I grow up, I’m going to show them that I can be successful at everything I do, because it’s their problem if they have ridiculously high expectations of me.

Chess Whiz Today , Astronaut Tomorrow 11-year-old Natasha Kavina Sundra Rajoo is the youngest in her family. While her hobbies vary from reading and drawing to sports, Natasha’s ambition is to become an astronaut. For the moment though, she is just happy exploring her world, eating sushi and watching her favourite cartoon ‘Spongebob Squarepants’. “I am the youngest in the family of three, all girls. My two sisters are Nisha, aged 21 years and Marisha who is 19; both are studying law,” explained Natasha. “My mother, Thana, has a law degree and my father is a lawyer and arbitrator. So I guess I am the only one in the family who is not going to have a law background because I want to be an astronaut!” Natasha also had the opportunity to talk to Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar at the International Space Station (ISS) in October 2007 when she represented her school for the event. “Math and Science are my favourite subjects in school, and I aspire to study Aeronautical Engineering or anything to do with space technology in an American University. My favourite past time is reading, especially books on space fiction. My favourite book is ‘George’s Secret Key to the Universe’ by Lucy and Stephen Hawking.” Natasha also expressed her ambition in an essay published in her school magazine ‘Mercu’ in 2007. Other than her dreams of exploring the universe, Natasha is also a very active student. She represents her school, S.K. Bukit Damansara, in various co-curricular activities, such as science, swimming and gymnastic competitions. While doing all this, she still managed to stay at the top of her class since Year 1. One of Natasha’s recent achievements was representing her school in both individual and team events at the Zone and State levels, as well as Kuala Lumpur in U-12 Girls (Individual) Category at the MSSM National Chess Championships in Klang (2009). At the MSSM Bangsar Zone Level, she was crowned the Champion in both the U-12 Girls Individual and Team Categories. “I play chess because I enjoy playing it. It entertains me. It also helps me to concentrate and focus, and this helps me a lot in my studies,” enthused Natasha. “I was introduced to chess at the age of three. I started learning the moves after that and started playing competitive chess since eight years old. My chess idol is Bobby Fischer because he is a genius in the game. He once said ‘I don’t believe in psychology but I believe in good moves.’”

“My mum sent me for group chess lessons at the Royal Lake Club. She was the one who first taught me the game. She taught me the names of the chess pieces and the moves. I started becoming more interested in the game when she ‘allowed’ me to win. That motivated me more!” “I then started playing competitive chess at school level and then moved to advance level lessons at the Club. It was only about a year ago that I had an individual coach. The first four months I had a coach who was just too strict and my mum had to stop him because I felt very intimidated by him,” remembered the young lass. “After that, I had another coach, Mr. Lim Tze Pin (who is still my coach today) and he has taught me a lot in the techniques of chess moves.”

in this world, my children will appreciate what I have done for them. I have sacrificed a lot of my time and career development for the sake of all my children. And the best part is I have enjoyed doing all that I have done for them.” “I am a believer of an all-rounder child. I feel the child should be exposed to different activities so we can identify their interests and talents that they possess. We should then develop and nurture the child’s potentials. For me, I discovered Natasha’s talents not only by her interests but also her ability to sustain those interests.” It seems that to have a full and diversified school life, one simply needs a combination of hard work, determination and talent, along with the loving dedication of one’s parents. “But I think I need to brush up on the hard work part!” joked Natasha. “I hope to improve my playing skills and perhaps represent the country at international competitions before the end my school life.” Here’s to achieving her goals and having fun along the way.

Although Natasha may have a hectic daily schedule, she is able to manage her time properly by observing strict discipline and by prioritising. Her parents also try to ensure that she has a balanced lifestyle. “Yes it is tough juggling school work and other activities; but I can say that I have coped quite well so far (this year being toughest) with the help of my mum. She makes sure that I discipline myself, so now I do a lot of things on my own without being supervised,” said the hardworking girl. It is no wonder then that Natasha attributes her achievements to her mum’s guidance. As she explained, “A big part of the credit goes to my mum; she introduced me to the game. She takes leave from work just to be with me during competitions and I feel very happy because I know she is always there for me. She always tells me that it doesn’t matter even if I lose a game because I learn from my mistakes. In fact, she tells me that each game is a learning process, and so not to worry about losing.”

Natasha celebrating her 11th birthday with mum and sisters Marisha (left) & Nisha (second right)

So how should parents encourage their children to excel in whatever they do? “(I do so) by telling Natasha never to underestimate the capability of her brain and mind. I tell her that she has a lot of potential and encourage her to go for it. I believe a child can be an all-rounder if given the support and opportunity,” opined Thana. “When Natasha needs encouragement, I will tell her: ‘If someone else can do what you want or aspire to do, you can do it just as well or even better. So, go all out for it.” Although she is working, the hands-on mum is prepared to sacrifice her time and sleep in order to help out Natasha. As Thana put it, “I have no regrets with that at all. I know in the end, when I’m no more

Finally, here is what fans have been waiting for – Hannah Montana on the big screen! Hannah Montana The Movie is filmed entirely on location in and around Nashville, Tennessee, and Los Angeles, California. Miley Stewart (MILEY CYRUS) struggles to juggle school, friends and Hannah Montana - her secret pop star persona. In the movie, Miley sings, dances and performs 13 songs and musical numbers, many as Hannah Montana, some as Miley Stewart. As the film opens, Miley Stewart’s life is out of balance. Taken under the wing of a gung-ho and glamorous publicist, Vita (VANESSA WILLIAMS), Miley is letting Hannah begin to dominate her life. She keeps choosing Hannah over her commitments to family members, such as choosing Hannah to say goodbye to Jackson as he leaves for college and to attend Lilly’s long-anticipated sweet-16 party. It is clear that Miley’s beginning to forget why the Hannah Montana secret was created in the first place.

16

May-June 2009

When Hannah Montana ends up in a paparazzi-captured fight with Tyra Banks over a pair of designer shoes, Miley’s father, Robby Ray Stewart (BILLY RAY CYRUS), quietly takes control. Having attempted to reason with her to no avail, Robby Ray tricks Miley into thinking she’s going to New York as Hannah to perform. Actually, though, he’s really taking her from Los Angeles back home to Crowley Corners, Tennessee, for a dose of reality. This kicks off an adventure filled with the kind of fun, laughter and romance that even Hannah Montana couldn’t have imagined! Miley’s double life becomes even more complicated when she returns to Crowley Corners. She discovers that a reporter Oswald (PETER GUNN) has somehow managed to track Hannah Montana to her hometown and is asking the locals lots of questions. She also meets up with an old childhood friend, Travis Brody (LUCAS TILL), and soon finds herself in her first serious romance. She tries to impress Travis by telling him about her friend Hannah Montana, and suddenly finds her alter ego enlisted in a concert fundraiser to help save her hometown’s pristine Crowley Meadows from developers. Once again, having taken on more than she can handle, Miley has to call on her best friend, Lilly (EMILY OSMENT), and asks her for help. When Lilly finally arrives in Crowley Corners pretending to be Hannah Montana, events really spin out of control! Through her ordeals and (mis)adventures, Miley realises that she’s not just returning to Tennessee after a long absence. She’s also rediscovering how much her family, friends and home mean to her after her emerging success as a pop star. As Miley Stewart realises in the course of the movie, one can always go home again.

MOVIE TRIVIA • Filming in Tennessee returned the Cyruses to their own home near Nashville. • Extras were hired to play paparazzi during one scene in which Hannah Montana is making a music video in Santa Monica. Meanwhile, off screen real paparazzi were trying to capture the moment! • Hannah Montana’s concert, which opens the film, was shot at the Forum in Inglewood, California - the former home of the Los Angeles Lakers and L.A. Kings as well as the location of hundreds of concerts. During the concert, Miley Cyrus performed a couple of her revamped biggest hits for the 1,000 extras on hand. • The shoe fight sequence between Hannah Montana and Tyra Banks was filmed in two

locations. The exterior was filmed on the very posh Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, while the interior was shot in a department store in Tennessee. • At a fundraiser in the film, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) gets up on stage and teaches the audience the dance steps to the show-stopping “Hoedown Throwdown”, a hip-hop country fusion number in which the song’s lyrics are the dance instructions. The filmmakers nicknamed the number “Miley’s Macarena”. • Miley/ Hannah performs classic crowd favourites such as “Rockstar” and “Best of Both Worlds” in addition to unveiling ten brand new songs including “The Climb”, “Hoedown Throwdown”, “Let’s Get Crazy”, “Butterfly Fly Away” and “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home”. Also performing in the film are hit musical acts Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts.

Aerospace Adventure Zone

(AAZ)

Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system. Let’s continue from last issue with the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009). First off, we are going to plunge into the dark depths of history and talk a bit more on the beginnings of astronomy.

What is astronomy? Astronomy is the scientific study of the universe and the objects in it, including stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies. It is probably one the oldest sciences of them all. Even before medicine was practised or before we started to use the wheel, our ancestors studied the sky for thousands of years and began to see certain things that were happening constantly and on a very regular basis. They noticed how the sun appeared to move differently according to the season. They saw how the moon went through phases during a specific period of time, and how the different patterns of stars in the sky changed constantly and in time with the seasons. Even more mysterious were the wandering stars that were, in fact, planets that seemed to follow their own special paths through the sky, different from all the other points of light that remained fixed and never seemed to move. Early astronomers built special places where they could monitor the movements of the sun, stars and planets. Of particular concern to them during early times were things like when to plant and harvest crops. They noticed that at certain times of the year, the sun appeared to remain fixed in relationship to the horizon either at sunrise or sunset. At all other times, the sun seemed to rise and set either more to the north or south of this fixed position. These were marked as special days for our ancestor astronomers because they knew at these times the seasons would soon begin to change. 26

Summer & winter solstice As an example, the longest day and the warmest part of the year (the 21st of June) for people living in the northern hemisphere is what we now call midsummer. In astronomical terms it is called the summer solstice. It is the period of time when the sun shines directly on the northern hemisphere of Earth because of its tilted axis. See diagram. At the same time, for people living in the southern hemisphere, the astronomers there would experience the shortest day of the year which is now called the winter solstice. For the people in the south, it meant that the long hard days of winter would soon be coming to an end and they could begin to look forward to warmer weather and the prospect of preparing fields for crops for the coming spring. For people in the north, this period indicated to them that it was time to harvest the crops they had grown because they knew that the cold season (autumn and winter) would soon be arriving.

North-season

South-season

But wait a second. What about the poor people living near the South Pole at the same time? What will be happening there? OK, if you are near the South Pole in the middle of winter (around 21st June), then you will notice that the sun never comes up! For four whole months it is dark… can you imagine a night that lasts that long

Stars in the night sky Before ending this article on early astronomy, here’s something that is pretty cool. Have you ever looked up to the sky at night and saw patterns of stars? Some star patterns might look kind of weird, like a giant saucepan or a cross. Astronomers call these patterns Asterisms, but you probably know them better as constellations. In ancient times, people believed that these patterns (constellations) had special meanings. Often they associated them with gods, animals or special objects. Each different culture made up mythical stories to explain the constellations of star light they could see in the sky. As the year progressed, the constellations of stars appeared to move across the night sky. In a sense, they chased each other according to the seasons. One very famous constellation is Orion the Hunter. Orion can actually be seen right now if you go outside on a clear night after sunset. If you look toward the west where the sun has set and then tilt your head back until you are almost looking straight up, you can see a pattern of stars that look like a cooking pot with a handle. On one side of the pot you will see a star that looks a bit orange and on the other side you will see a star that looks whitish blue in colour. If you can see this, then you are looking at the constellation of Orion. Cool, right? In the next issue we will tell you the story of Orion the Hunter. So do make sure you come back to the Aerospace zone and check out the continuing story on constellations. Happy stargazing!

A day with no night & vice versa As you may know, Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5° from vertical. As the Earth travels around the sun during the year, this tilt causes the northern and southern hemispheres to be more or less directly exposed to the sun’s heat, light and energy (solar radiation). In the extreme latitudes near the north and south poles, the sun does some very strange things. For example, if it is summer in the northern hemisphere, and if you are standing near the North Pole, you will notice that the sun would never actually go down. It will appear to dip toward the horizon but it never goes below it. Can you imagine… a day that has no night! May-June 2009

AskAAZ Is there life in the Universe? Well, of course there is! Oh, you mean like is there life in other parts of the universe, like aliens, UFOs or slimy blobs of gunk slithering around the surfaces of distant worlds? To be honest, at this time the answer to the question is that we don’t actually know if life has evolved on other planets. Despite this disappointing fact, we have, in fact, begun to seriously search for signs of life in our solar system and even in star systems far from our home Earth. Scientists and astronomers have made some very exciting discoveries recently that build a very strong case for the possibility of life. To begin, we know that life tends to evolve wherever water is found. It is an essential fuel for almost all living things. We now know that the Planet Mars was once covered in water. Some of that water is still visible today in the polar ice caps of Mars. Is it possible that life once began on Mars when it was wet like Earth? Does Mars still support primitive life forms like bacteria and algae? Future missions to Mars may help to solve this question one day.

space for about 100 years. Basically, every radio and television signal that is generated on Earth ends up travelling out into space too. After 100 years, those radio waves have travelled one hundred light years away from Earth. That means that if there are aliens with radio technology on planets within 100 light years from Earth, they would be able to listen to our signals! This is why we now have special radio telescopes listening for any signals coming from alien civilizations in space. Who knows, one day we may begin to receive signals from planets far far away from Earth. As for UFOs, each year, many people report seeing strange objects flying in the sky. Some even claim they have spoken with aliens or were abducted by them for experiments and research. Most UFO sightings can be explained by things that occur naturally, but there are more than a handful of very strange encounters with UFOs and aliens that nobody has been able to fully explain. Many so-called UFO video footages can be found online, but remember though that not all of what you see is real.

One other interesting fact is that astronomers keep discovering planets orbiting stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. In fact, so far, we have discovered nearly three hundred planets orbiting stars. With better telescopes and scientific instruments we are getting better and better at finding smaller Earth-like planets that may be able to support life. In time, with powerful telescopes, we may even be able to see if planets have Earth-like environments and atmospheres. We have also been listening for signs of life out in the universe. Humans have been transmitting signals into

Fun Facts

Kingdom of the Blue Whale After a year-long pregnancy, females usually give birth to a single calf that weighs around 2,700 kilograms and reaches about eight metres, nearly as large as an adult hippo – wow! It is believed that there are now approximately 10,000 to 25,000 blue whales on the planet. Other than that, a blue whale… • is the largest animal to have ever inhabited the earth. It is larger than any of the great dinosaurs and nearly twice the size of some of the better-known whales. • can weigh up to 200 tons. It is heavier than 25 fully grown Asian elephants combined. • can grow up to 100 feet - that’s longer than an NBA basketball court. • consumes an average of four tons of tiny, shrimp-like animals in one day. That’s like eating 64,000 hamburgers! • has a heart the size of a Mini Cooper that can weigh close to 450 kilograms. A human could actually crawl through its major arteries. • is one of the loudest creatures on the planet, and can produce sounds louder than a jet engine. • might be able to communicate with other whales up to 1,600 kilometres away. • spends almost all of their lives underwater and surfaces for only seconds at a time to fill their closet-sized lungs. • cruises the oceans at about ten kilometres an hour, but can accelerate to more than 32 kilometres per hour if alarmed, and can travel 160 kilometres in one day. • releases a spray from its blowhole taller than a two-storey building (about ten metres!). • is born with dorsal patterns, or distinct markings on their back like a fingerprint that never changes.

Heart to Heart

From exclusive screenings of teenage flicks to outreach missions and charities, Superkidz Club members go from adoring heartthrobs to having big hearts.

Jonas Brothers - The 3D Experience The Jonas Brothers, live! Well, almost. For our Superkidz Club members, experiencing the teenage idols in 3D was almost as good. Kids trooped with their friends and families to GSC Mid Valley recently to have a feel of the “rockumentary”, produced by Walt Disney Pictures. A close to full cinema saw fans standing up on their seats to rock it out with Kevin, Joe and Nick, singing and dancing along to the songs in their “Burning Up” tour. One would think it was an actual concert as Superkidz Club members waved their hands in surrender and in adulation of their idols.

Giving Love to the Disabled & the Underprivileged True to our underlying mission to spread love and joy to the less fortunate, the Kidz team recently visited the Pusat Penjagaan Kanak Kanak Cacat Taman Megah ("PPKKCTM"), a home for underprivileged children and with disabilities (see full story in Kidz May-June 2009 issue). Kidz was joined by ardent supporters, Susan Lim, her daughter Francine and their church friends. A bit of chaos ensued when we entered the Home as we were met with the warm exuberance of the children who were all eager to shake everybody’s hands. The Home’s host, Mr. Baskin gave a hearty introduction on the Home and its 110 beneficiaries, who either came from broken homes or are suffering from Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, global development delay, muscular dystrophy, are speech, audio and vision impaired, afflicted with dwarfism, apeth syndrome, Noonan's syndrome, are slow learners, hyper active, physically challenged or intellectually disabled.

Francine and her friends played party hosts for the day as they got the children to dance along to nursery rhymes. The girls did a CD tutorial crash course in making animal sculptures with balloons a week earlier just to entertain the kids during the visit. Their efforts paid off as the children evidently took great pleasure from the activity. The dancealong and balloon-making soon turned into a sing-along, as Francine and friends played tunes with a guitar and the children sang their hearts out with them.

Touched by the simple joy of the PPKKCTM children, the young philanthropists share their insights here from the experience: “Together, together, together everyone! Together, together, come on let’s have some fun!” Indeed, this was what the kids at PPKKCTM showed when we arrived at the home. With all the enthusiasm displayed, there was no way we could not smile. The kids at PPKKCTM are full of never-ending joy, laughter and smiles. Even in their condition, they still make the best of what they have, not showing any signs of moroseness. Working together and helping each other, OH that just makes you feel so guilty…. Even having everything or more than enough, at times you don’t want to give but just want to receive. I was really shocked as the response there was really not what I had expected. The kids were up and about, running all over. When we arrived at the home, we were greeted by warm, happy, smiling faces. The kids were certainly excited to have us there. The home manager, Mr Baskin, explained to us about the home, the children’s condition and what they do at the home. The sounds of laughter filled the air as songs were played on the radio and guitar. Dancing was everywhere. The kids marveled as we did balloon sculptures and gave it to them. It was a great feeling to be appreciated so wholeheartedly and without being judged! We danced and sang with the kids until we were all tired out. We loved having the kids around us and see them having fun. It brought me so much joy to see that we made them happy just by being there. When it was time to bid bye-bye, we were reluctant to leave. We packed all our things and thanked the home manager, Mr Baskin, for having us there. I hope to visit the home again soon. I’m sure the kids will be very happy to have visitors at the home. I will also surely share with other friends about this enriching experience. - Francine Yeap, 13; SMK USJ 4 I felt sorry for them and I hope that more people will come and visit them more often as they are so happy playing with us when we visited them. May God be with them always. - Aaron, 19 This trip was really different from what I had expected. When I first entered the special home, honestly, I was quite freaked out. However, it was plain to see that the children there seemed extremely happy 34

to have us. Most came to us to welcome and greet us. They were all very warm and friendly. A majority of them looked and behaved quite normally. It was the infants who were facing more serious situations. It was really unfortunate that they cannot mix around like other normal kids but, instead, they have to lie down and have tubes attached to them in order to survive. The other children are quite active, capable of dancing, singing, playing and even responded to us pretty well. Overall, it was a very good and memorable experience for me. In the future, I would still want to spend some time to visit them as well as other special homes. - Kimberly Tey, 14; SMK USJ 12

I feel very sad for them. I hope they can lead a happy life and I hope that more people will give them a helping hand by donating more food and medical equipment for them. I won't leave my children at the orphanage home even though they're abnormal. They deserve to stay with their parents to provide them with lots of love. - Carmen, 15

I was scared and felt 'weird' because I've never seen disabled or deformed people before. - Andrew, 9 I feel sorry for them and hope more people will donate money and food for them. - Alson, 14 We went into the house and….boy, I was not at all prepared for the sight that welcomed me ‘cause there were a lot of handicapped kids there. Woah… it was an entire new experience for me! I really felt grateful that I am not facing any problems as serious as they are. The kids were definitely excited to have us there as they were practically chasing us all over the place. The kids got really excited when the balloons came out. We had to hide the balloons in our pockets as the kids were looking into the bag in which we kept the balloons. We also had games and songs. The kids were happily dancing away to the ‘Chicken Dance’ song. We were also dragged into dancing with the kids but we did not regret as we really enjoyed ourselves. - Irwin Lim, 13; SMK USJ 4

The three-day education fair held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in April paved the way for the magazines’ readers, subscribers and members to put a face to the Kidz editorial team who were on hand to personally hand out goodies, share updates or just have a casual tête-à-tête with the mums, dads and kids who zealously swarmed to the Kidz and Superkidz booths. New recruits for Superkidz Club were likewise welcomed as well as new subscribers who jumped at the chance to be part of the big Kidz and Superkidz family. A highlight of the fair was the search for the Superkidz Magazine cover models where 14 hopefuls, aged four to 13, took to the catwalk to strut their stuff and strike a pose showcasing their model best. The runway parade served as a platform for children, aged three to 15, to showcase their individuality through the magazine as cover models, if not as contributors to share their flair for writing and other unique gifts through the magazine. No Place Like Home Melissa Lee Ai Zhen (12 years old, student of Lorna Whiston Study Centre)

There once was a flock of sparrows that lived in Central Park, Manhattan, a noisy, bustling place. The sparrows had to raise their chirps to be heard over the endless noise and activity. Among this flock of birds, there was a sparrow named Ronnie, who, unlike the others, hated the city life. As far as he remembered, he had always wished for some peace and quiet. Even a quiet day spent perched on a branch would be interrupted by the many hot-dog and ice-cream vendors advertising their wares.

Ronnie slept for many hours, awakened by the bright rays of the sun. He looked around and spied a sparrow sipping water from the same stream he had drunk from the day before. He settled near the sparrow aiming to befriend him, hoping the sparrow would accept him into the sparrow's flock.

Ronnie had always loved watching other birds fly into the distance. His heart leapt each time he saw a flock of birds soar into the deep blue sky. 'I wish I could go far away, to a place where I would have peace for once,' he thought. He wanted to leave, but he didn't dare. Then, one day, he thought,' Well, why don't I? I don't like my life here. I'll just follow the next flock of birds that pass by and see if they'll accept me into their flock.'

“Yes? May I help you?” responded the sparrow.

Excited by the notion of escape, Ronnie pecked a few crumbs of bread up, flapped his wings, and flew away. Ronnie was ecstatic. He flew all day, following a flock of birds flying ahead; unaware that Ronnie was shadowing them. For the first time in his life, Ronnie saw golden ears of corn swaying gently, lime-green cabbages and ruby-red tomatoes. Unaccustomed to flying so far and so fast, Ronnie soon began to tire and descended to a nearby stream to drink some cool, fresh water. Then suddenly, he remembered the flock of birds he had been following. Ronnie looked up, but they were nowhere to be seen. They had gone, carrying Ronnie's dreams of a better life with them. Ronnie hopped around frantically, chirping in distress until he was exhausted and famished. 'I'll find some breadcrumbs to eat before tackling the problem.' Ronnie thought. Unable to locate any, Ronnie thought,'Where are the breadcrumbs?' Then he realised the chilling truth - there were no bird-lovers around to offer him breadcrumbs and seeds. He perched on a branch and fell asleep, hoping he would have better luck the next morning. 36

“Excuse me?” asked Ronnie hesitantly.

Hi, I'm Ronnie and I was wondering ... Could I join your flock?”asked Ronnie. “I'm sorry, but we have enough members.” said the sparrow apologetically after a brief conversation with his leader. Ronnie felt his face turn hot with embarrassment. “Oh. Well, I'm sorry to have bothered you then.” mumbled Ronnie. He slowly turned to leave. “Wait!” cried the sparrow. Ronnie turned back, a tiny glimmer of hope beginning to glow. “I happen to know that the owls have a space open in their flock. They might accept you.” said the sparrow.

“I thought owls were solitary birds.” said Ronnie, puzzled. “Well, I think they are forming a flock. Probably for hunting purposes to gather food.” “Ugh!” yelled Ronnie with disgust. “Ronnie, I'm sure you could work something out.” replied the sparrow, “I'm Jay, by the way.” “Well, thanks, Jay. I'll try talking to the owls.” said Ronnie gratefully. His tummy rumbling, Ronnie foraged around for some food. He finally found some berries and nuts. He had a snack before visiting the owls. Comfortably full, Ronnie flew to a large hollow tree where he was certain the owls were living. He almost bumped into an owl who stood guard at the opening. “Hello, sir. My name is Ronnie and I hear you have an empty slot in your flock. Could I join?” said Ronnie shyly. “Ah. I see. Well, we are fine with you joining, Ronnie. But what benefit would it have for either of us?” asked the owl. “Well, sir, you all have young ones in your flock, don't you? I could look after them while you go hunting.” explained Ronnie. “Ah, but you sleep at night, which is the time that we owls go hunting. How could you look after our little ones when you're fast asleep?” asked the owl. “I'm a very light sleeper, sir. Even the slightest sound would wake me up.” The owl weighed that into consideration and accepted Ronnie into the flock.

demanding Ronnie to stay up the whole night. They didn't allow him to doze off, even for a few minutes now and then. He didn't think it would be so difficult to stay up at night but the nights were dark and he had no friends to chat with; except for the baby owls he had promised to take care of. He began to miss his friends in Manhattan. Besides, he was uncomfortable with the owls' eating habits. He realised he was in the wrong flock and it was no fun sleeping during the day and staying up at night. He resigned himself to the fact that this adventure he had dreamt so much of was not turning out well. As much as it pained him, he decided the best thing to do was to leave this flock of owls and head for home. He ate a few nuts and berries, then flew off in the direction he had come from. The longing for home intensified in Ronnie's heart as hours went by. When he finally reached Central Park, he saw the trees below and couldn't contain his excitement that he was home again. The familiar noises he had hated so much in the past, filled his ears once more as he saw his old friend, Zak, for the first time after five long days. Zak was perched on a branch in the park, busily munching on a breadcrumb and occasionally looking up to the sky wondering what had become of Ronnie. Suddenly, he noticed a small bird coming closer and closer to him. He soon had the shock of his life when he recognised Ronnie, himself. Zak dropped the breadcrumb and flew forward to meet his friend. “Oh my god, Ronnie! It's really you, you're really back!” They soon realized how much they had missed each other. Ronnie spent the rest of the day telling Zak about the place he had visited. There is no place like home.

Three days later, Ronnie was unhappy. The owlets were always Melissa with her family

A Trip to

China By Edric Tan Chen Ping

During the last school holidays (12th to 19th March), I went to Fujian Province, China, with my grandparents, my father and other relatives. There were 25 of us, including four children. We flew to Xiamen City by Malaysia Airlines and I enjoyed the flight very much. The purpose of this trip was to visit our relatives in Anxi, my great grandfather’s hometown.

Qingshui Temple, Genting Highlands which is the Qingshui Rock in Anxi.

I saw lots of temples, bridges and mountains in China. The sceneries were breathtaking. We visited Gulang Yu, a famous island in Xiamen City as well as the Piano Museum and Riguang Yan on the island. Riguang Yan is the highest mountain on the island. We also visited Nanputuo Temple, Huandaolu (the longest marathon track in the world) and Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Centre.

Another new experience for me was sitting on a bamboo raft and traveling along Taoxian River which is approximately seven kilometres long. The journey took about 1.5 hours and each raft could carry six people. This is one of the famous activities in Hill Rocky Ox Scenic Area, Fujian Province.

Besides Xiamen City, we also went to the Nanshaolin Temple and the History Museum in Quanzhou City. The weather was cold at night and windy in the day time. After a two-day visit to Xiamen City and Quanzhou City, we finally reached our relative’s house in Anxi where we stayed for three nights. There, we visited the origin of

I also played with my cousin and realised how life in a small town in China is very much different from ours in Malaysia. My cousin found such simple joy in showing me how he caught the earthworm and played with it.

I also liked the food in China. I was using spoon and chopsticks for the whole trip because I couldn’t get a fork in the places I visited. Overall, the trip to China was fun. The only thing is that I missed very much was my mum and my siblings because they could not come with us. I hope that I can travel again in the coming school holidays.

MY AMAZING

THUNDER By Diviyah Suresh Kumar 13 years old; SMK USJ 12

I have no idea how but I was somehow lost in this wet forest. It was bright as day! The trees were so long that it bent and covered the sky and the sun completely. I could say it was bright because the sun’s rays shone through the little gaps between the trees. To my great relief, my cat Thunder happened to be there with me. I carried Thunder and gave her a warm hug. She meowed loudly and rubbed her head softly against my chin. I said “Thunder, we are lost! We are lost! We have to find our way out quickly!” Thunder hopped down gracefully and looked around and started sniffing. She knew her path and I followed her. As we went along, the path became narrow because of huge trees in the forest. Suddenly, Thunder’s claws grew long and sharp just like a saw. With ease she cut down those trees blocking our path. Along our journey we then reached a waterfall. Looking at the beautiful site we decided to take some rest. I sat down by the cold icy water and Thunder was on my tired lap. I stroked Thunder’s soft fur. After a good rest, we freshened ourselves up and decided to continue our journey. Unfortunately, I found out to my dismay

that the only way out was through the deep, icy cold waterfall! All of a sudden, Thunder jumped into the water. I shouted aloud, Thunderrrr! Slowly, something was coming out from the water and it was a dolphin. But it wasn’t any dolphin! It was Thunder, transformed into a dolphin with a thunder-like scar on her back and with beautiful blue shiny eyes. Immediately, I jumped on her. She sped off like a motorboat instead of swimming like an ordinary dolphin. As I held her, I looked at my hands and I couldn’t believe my eyes! My hands and body were covered by a special black waterproof suit. My head was covered with a transparent headgear. Suddenly, a school of swordfish was about to attack us with their sharp muzzles. In a split second, Thunder transformed into a large black eagle and we flew away. We then finally landed, and, out of exhaustion, we dozed off! I woke up and saw myself on my messy bed and Thunder facing me. I realised it was just a dream and Thunder was just an ordinary cute little thing. As I stroked Thunder, I saw the thunder-like scar on her back. Then I wondered if it was all only a dream ……
