Teenage: The time of our lives! A teenager's life can be said to be similar to a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs. As a teenager myself, I have gone through extremely joyful moments, and have also cried to life's adversities. Another thing about teenagers is that we're often misunderstood by parents and teachers! Then again, without the guidance and patience of our parents and teachers, we would not be able to do many things for ourselves. I wouldn't have been able to write this article, for instance. During this teenage period, we, teenagers, tend to start maturing and learning new things. With this maturity, we have to make the right decisions. One of the very few things I enjoy is going to school. Why? Simple...my friends! They seem to be the people I can relate to, probably because we're all still going through the teenage phase. Teenagers these days are very different compared to the time when my parents were teenagers. My parents tell me stories of how they enjoyed the kampong life in Kedah as teenagers. Sometimes I envy them, but I’m also thankful of the time I live in.
During my preschool years, I used to say that females were superfluous in my life, but only now do I realise that the teenage world is one where boys try to impress girls with their skills in sports and brilliance to cope with studies and social life, while girls try to impress boys with their kindness, generosity and branded clothing. Teenage life can be said to be the time of everyone's lives. While many dream of growing older and living on their own, I personally prefer to be living under my parents’ roof, without worries of paying a rent, enjoying my mother's cooking and being given pocket money. Most of you would say that if that is what I want, I should be a child forever, but they are only partially right. Another part of being a teenager is that we get respected and looked at as a young adult, and no longer as the boy who plays with his food and plays with miniature toys. Instead of waiting to grow up and get out of their parents’ houses, teenagers should cherish the moments we have now because, soon, we will be real adults, leaving our childhood behind completely without a reference from it, except a vivid memory of it.
These days, teenagers indulge themselves in computer games, music, sports and many other activities. I don't play computer games a lot, but I spoil myself with my PS3 often. Games such as Guitar Hero, FIFA 09 and Need For Speed are just examples of the many addictive games we teenagers find ourselves spending hours playing.
Teenagers complain that parents don't understand them. This can be said to be true. However, I think my parents really do understand me. They claim to have watched my sister and cousins transform from kids into adults, and that the process I was going through was perfectly normal. This is probably one of the advantages of being the youngest in the family. Also, my mum once quoted, ‘With teenagers, it's not about watching them grow up; it's about growing up with them.’
Music, on the other hand, comes in numerous genres. There are many bands idolised by the teenage generation of today. A few girls from my school adore Jonas Brothers and the guys usually soothe their souls with the head banging rock of Slipknot, the catchy beats of Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy, and also the slow Indie music of Bob Marley, Tegan and Sara, and many more.
Since I was a child, I have had many dreams and desires. I had wanted to be a pilot at one point in time, until I found out about the Bermuda Triangle and immediately changed my mind. Then, I dreamed of one day playing for Arsenal FC, and, honestly, that dream is still in me. However now, I dream to be a writer or a lawyer and have my parents as my idols.
People often say that girls mature faster then boys, and that girls tend to make much more rational decisions than boys. I completely disagree. I think that although boys and girls are very different, both genders are quite capable of making the right choices when needed to.

After my exams, I’m going to do nothing but watch TV and play video games! I’m working hard to score in my exams, so it’s only fair that I get to relax and become a couch potato after that, and my dad can’t stop me, ha ha! Patricia (13)
I bet the person who came up with the phrase “As easy as taking a candy from a baby” didn’t actually have a baby sister. I tried… she nearly screamed her head off! I got a scolding from my parents. So my advice is – don’t try it!
I feel really lonely at home. I don’t live with my mum because my parents divorced, and my dad has a new girlfriend… yuck! She’s nice to him but totally ignores me. And my dad is too busy to notice me. I have no one to talk to at home, so my only friend is the computer.

A self-confessed ‘indoor person’, Greg is living out his ultimate summer fantasy: no responsibilities and no rules! But Greg’s mum has a different vision for an ideal summer . . . one packed with outdoor activities and ‘family togetherness’. Whose vision will win out? Or will a new addition to the Heffley family change everything? So many possibilities!
Eight Fortunes of Qilin & Eight Jewels of the Phoenix Retold by: Tutu Dutta-Yean Illustrated by: Tutu Dutta-Yean Price: RM 18.90 each Reading level: 9 - 12 years old
Each collection of stories brings together eight legends and folk tales from countries around the AsiaPacific Rim. Each story in both collections is rooted in the culture of its people. It is also a window to the past as some of these cultures may no longer exist or are undergoing rapid transformation. As the fabled Qilin represents compassion, wisdom and respect for nature and life, these qualities are echoed in Eight Fortunes of the Qilin. Nature - whether in the form of a mighty river, a little cricket or snail - plays a prominent role in these enthralling tales. It is also the thread that binds all these elements together. Humans, spirits and deities cross paths, and unseen worlds collide. Eight Jewels of the Phoenix will be a journey of discovery for those unfamiliar with the cultures. Readers will find universal themes: the reversal of fortune, quest for love - possible and impossible, sacrifice for the greater good and even the charming story of a Malay Cinderella. Accompanying the rich tales are black-and-white illustrations by the author to bring a fresh perspective to the stories. These are timeless tales that will appeal to both young and old alike.
Septimus Heap #5: Syren Author: Angie Sage Price: RM 29.90 Reading level: 9 - 12 years old

Along with Jenna and Beetle, he is stranded there with his badly injured dragon, Spit Fyre. There are some strange things about the island, including a Magykal girl named Syrah, a catshaped lighthouse that has lost its Light, and an eerie presence that sings to Septimus - can he escape the persistent call? Trouble is also brewing for Lucy and Wolf Boy, who have become entangled with some nefarious sailors at sea, and for Milo Banda, Jenna's father, who is harbouring a mysterious treasure chest in his ship’s hold. Severn Cullis-Suzuki
“If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.” Born on 30th November 1979 in Vancouver, Canada, Severn’s passion was the environment, undoubtedly influenced by her father, geneticist and environmental activist David Suzuki. Severn was an outspoken child even during her kindergarten years. When she was only nine years old, Severn started the Environmental Children’s Organization (ECO) with a group of friends who were just as committed as she is about learning about environmental issues and teaching other kids about it. As a group, they raised money to buy a water filter for natives living in the Malaysian rainforest when their water supply was threatened by pollution and over logging. Not content with merely doing that, in 1992, when Severn was 12 years old, they raised the money needed to travel to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, five thousand miles away from her home! Along with her group members, Michelle Quigg, Vanessa Suttie, and Morgan Geisler, she talked about environmental issues from the point of view of a youth, urging delegates to define their values and take individual responsibility. Yes, Severn is known for being ‘The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes’!
Below is an excerpt from her speech: “I am only a child. Yet I know that if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this would be. In school you teach us not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share, not be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do? You grownups say you love us, but I challenge you, please, to make your actions reflect your words.” Her speech touched a nerve with the adult delegates present, hitting home the essence of what is important to everyone in the simplest, most fundamental way. Her heartfelt words so deeply moved and affected everyone that, by the end of it, Severn received a standing ovation from all present - not a simple feat for a youngster in an international arena! In 1993, Severn was honoured in the Global 500 Roll of Honor of the United Nations Environment Program. Not slowing down one bit, she also published her book that same year on environmental steps for the family called Tell the World. During her senior year in college, she helped launched the discussion group-cumthink tank website called The Skyfish Project. Then after graduating from Yale University, Severn spent two years travelling and co-hosting the children’s TV series Suzuki’s Nature Quest on the Discovery Channel. To this day, Severn still remains as one of the world’s most remarkable youth activists, speaking to kids, corporations and politicians around the world.
Talia Leman
“If we want a better world, we need to know that the world does belong to us, and that we have the power to make it better.” 12
November - December 2009
Superkid
Exemplary. Outstanding. Courageous. Are you a Superkid? In 2008, 13-year-old Talia Leman of Waukee, Iowa was named one the top ten youth volunteers of America and received a national Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Selected from nearly 20,000 applicants across the country, this was in honour of her outstanding volunteer community service. Not only that, Talia was also honoured by the World of Children organisation and received a sort of ‘Children’s Nobel Prize’ award. Talia is actually the CEO and founder of a non-profit organisation called RandomKid that aims to educate, motivate and unite young people around the world to work on issues that needed their help. Her first project was to encourage kids in her neighbourhood to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Kartina. So instead of candies, she asked them to trick-or-treat for coins. News spread about her cause and kids all around the country participated. Talia’s initial goal was to raise US$1 million. In the end, it was reported that they collectively raised about US$10 million for the hurricane relief efforts. What a phenomenal feat! Through her website www.randomkids.org, Talia solicits support from other young people everywhere for projects that address global children’s issues. Other than downloading forms, brainstorming ideas and networking with kids nationwide, Talia also gives out interest-free ‘loans’ to youths in order to help them jumpstart philanthropic projects. The ultimate goal is to help youths become innovative and successful global problem-solvers to ensure a better fate for the world and the future.
What is terrific about RandomKid is that it was started with the goal of helping children help others. All programmes and projects are initiated by kids. For example, if you have an idea on how to help someone or a cause, you can voice it out and RandomKid will try to help you make it possible. So, in essence, it is not about you joining them, but rather them joining you in your cause – how great is that! Even kids who don’t know how or where to start would now have the guidance of those that will help make their goals a possibility. Having been appointed as the first known National Youth Ambassador of UNICEF, Talia has worked with youths in many countries and have reported nearly US$10.5 million in funds raised from RandomKid-guided initiatives. One of the recent and biggest project encouraged students to sell their own bottled water products to help fund clean-water technologies in areas around the world in need of such facilities, such as in Africa where there was a need for water pumps. Another project was to help build a school in Cambodia so that 300 kids can go to school. Talia never thought that the organisation she founded would one day become as successful as it is now. Here’s a great quote from Talia on the website: “I have learned that anyone is someone. I allow myself to think big, and then I take all the small steps to get there, one after the other, never stopping. When I hit an obstacle, I see it as a wrong-way sign and head a new way.”
Janine Licare
“The rainforest is an amazing place and we vow to do anything and everything we can to save it.”
Rainforests form an integral part of the Earth and are very important to our survival. Without it, we won’t get to see all the amazing animals and flora that exist in the world. Without trees, there won’t be any oxygen for us to breathe! With that in mind, Janine Licare set out with a mission to save the Costa Rican rainforest, where she’s from.
Back in 1999, when Janine was merely nine years old, she found out that the native rainforest in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica was in danger of being destroyed and torn down for development. It is home to a national park with a huge population of animals like 109 species of mammals and 184 types of birds. So, together with her friend, they decided to set up the non-profit organisation Kids Saving The Rainforest (KSTR) to try to stop that from happening. Janine’s goals for setting up KSTR were primarily to educate children about the rainforest, preserve and protect it via reforestation programme, care for abandoned or injured baby animals and ensure the survival of the critically endangered Titi monkeys. That remains true to this day, even though her friend has long since moved away. However, Janine’s not alone in her fight. Now she’s got others helping – her mum, Dr. Jennifer Rice and over 200 volunteers and students! The headquarters of KSTR is located in the heart of the rainforest. This is great as it lets children see directly the results of their work while learning about the rainforest, the destruction that threatens it and how they can help save it. Some of the things Janine have done or are doing in order to complete her goals include hosting international summer camps yearly (where she is a junior counsellor), creating a reforestation programme where tens of thousands of trees were planted, as well as doing public relations work.
By working closely with the community and the national park where the only surviving Titi monkeys are found, KSTR has also accomplished great strides in preserving the 1,200 monkeys that are left. They erected nearly 40 monkey bridges across busy roads so that the monkeys won’t get hit by cars or electrocuted by live wires.
On top of that, Janine also maintains an educational, informative website called www.kidssavingtherainforest.org that she created. It is loaded with lots of useful information, ideas on how kids around the world can organise community activities, and even an activity section. There is an online catalogue for their successful gift shop as well, where 100% of the profits are channelled into the KSTR initiative. It’s really cool – go check it out! Here is a message Janine posted on the KSTR website:
“Ever since we were little, we acknowledged the fact that it is home to many kinds of animals as well as other living organisms such as trees, plants and insects... It is very important that we preserve the environment because by saving it, we make sure that our future is protected and available for the next generations. If it disappears, then so does our planet.” For her tireless efforts and achievements, Janine and KSTR have been featured in numerous magazines, including Teen People where she was the Person of the Month (June/ July 2002 issue), National Geographic Explorer (November/ December 2002 issue) and Wild Magazine where Janine was on their February 2003 cover – the first time ever that the magazine featured a human rather than an animal on their cover! Not only is she a champion of the rainforest, Janine is also a high-achiever in school and excelled in all of her classes, ranking number one countless times. Janine shows that kids can have fun, do well in school and save Mother Nature all at the same time!

Exemplary. Outstanding. Courageous. Are you a Superkid?
Nicol Ann David Whoever has followed the sports careers of national athletes would have heard of Nicol Ann David in one way or another. The Malaysian professional squash player is a trueblue Malaysian who has done her country and family proud. Even though she is now an adult (at 26 years old), her determination, sheer drive and accomplishments to date is truly an inspiration to all. So how did Nicol begin her ‘love affair’ with squash? Born in Penang in 1983, she has two sisters who are also successful squash players on the national level. Nicol was first introduced to the sports when she was five years old. At that time, she was so small that she couldn’t even properly lift the racquet because it was too big and heavy! However, that did not stop her from playing. By the time she was eight years old, Nicol started taking squash seriously. While training, she was spotted by Ms Ee Phoeh Hoon of the Squash Rackets Association of Penang who later led Nicol to represent her home state with her sisters. 1992 marked the beginning of her squash career when she won silver for the Penang State Junior Championship in the Under 14 category. That same year also saw her winning her first national level tournament in the Milo-Dunlop National Junior Interstate Championship where she won silver in the Under 16 category. Nicol got the opportunity to represent her state in the 1994 SUKMA Games. Although she was terribly ill that day, she persevered and, in the end, helped Penang to win the gold medal in the team event. That same year, she also won her first international title – the Scottish Junior Open Under 12 title. That marked the start of Nicol’s winning streak that has only kept on growing bigger and longer! During the next two years (1995 1996), she went on to win four more titles. Then in 1999, Nicol was recognised as the youngest woman to become a world junior champion when she won the Women’s World Junior Squash Championships in Antwerp, Belgium at the tender age of 15. In the process, she even managed to beat three players ranked in the world’s top 20 spot.
Not only that, she became one of only two players in the history of the sports to have ever won the championship twice when she defended the title in Penang (2001). If you thought that was her greatest feat, you can’t be any more wrong. What could possibly top that, you ask? Well, the fact that Nicol has won the Asian Squash Championships six times, the World Open title four times, and is the only women’s squash player to have won all age categories in the British Junior Open. Plus, during the period of March 2006 to April 2007, Nicol held a 13-month long winning streak where she secured 51 victories – a mind-boggling achievement! Currently ranked the World No. 1 in women’s squash, she is also the first Asian woman to do so in the sport. Yes, Nicol is definitely someone who has achieved a lot of firsts in her life! Locally, Nicol was honoured with the Order of Merit in conjunction with the birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on 7th June 2008. Established in June 1975, this award is limited to ten recipients who have made significant contributions in arts, science and humanity; Nicol is its first recipient. Then on 12th July 2208, she was yet again honoured in conjunction with the 70th birthday of the Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas. She was one of the 28 people who received the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) which carries the title ‘Datuk’, making her the youngest person ever to be conferred the Datukship in Malaysia. What Nicol has achieved since she first held the squash racquet as a young child are too numerous, expansive and non-exhaustive to be listed down in its entirety here. However, another of her noble efforts must be mentioned - the setting up of the news, blog and entertainment portal about women squash players called Squash Stars. Manned by volunteers, its purpose is to spread the joys of squash and to let everyone get to know these players. Squash Stars is represented by a Star Ambassador from each country, and they are all No. 1 players in their respective countries. As squash has still not gained Olympic status (as in it is not a featured sport), Squash Stars hopes to raise more awareness about this amazing sport of theirs. By inspiring others to be just as fanatical and passionate as they are about squash, they hope that the sport will get the recognition it should. This is succinctly summed up by Nicol on the site: “We started Squash Stars with the intention of helping the sport that we love develop into something that everyone in the world will love. This is the first step to a long journey. And we can’t wait to see what awaits us.”
So kids, remember – no matter what, keep on dreaming those big goals and don’t forget to chase after them! Resources: www.amazing-kids.org www.clovetwo.com www.collagefoundation.org www.halloweenhelpers.blogspot.com www.kidssavingtherainforest.org/main.html www.myhero.com

Release Date: Genre: Director: Produced by: Voice Cast:
The movie features Disney’s newest princess and is the Studio’s first fairy tale to be set in America. Everyone knows the story in which a princess finds true love by kissing a frog that magically turns into her handsome prince. In the animated comedy The Princess and The Frog, that provides a modern twist on a classic tale.
The prince now has to hop around and look for a way to return to his true self. Naveen wants to try the old fairy tale solution of a kiss and asks Tiana to help. However, this only results in Tiana being transformed too! Now the amphibious duo finds themselves cast adrift and pursued by frog hunters. Their only hope lies in seeking the help of a mysterious 197-year-old priestess named Mama Odie (voice of JENIFER LEWIS). In the end, love triumphs, and the differences that seemed so very important before seem to disappear.
In this story, the girl still kisses a frog, but the result is quite different and only one of dozens of surprises that will be revealed in this mix of wacky humour, thrills, melody and emotion. Love eventually finds a way, but it’s clear that the most important details lie well beneath the skin. Tiana (voice of ANIKA NONI ROSE) is an attractive, independent, hardworking young woman. She has no time for romance or dreams, loves cooking and plans to be a successful restaurateur. In spite of her hard work and diligence though, obstacles keep Tiana’s goals out of her reach.

19th November 2009 Animation / Fantasy Robert Zemeckis Roland Emmerich & Harald Kloser Robert Zemeckis, Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes, Fionnula Flanagan, Leslie Manville, Leslie Zemeckis
Movie Trivia
• Except for Colin Firth, Fionnula Flanagan, Leslie Manville and Leslie Zemeckis, everyone else played multiple roles in the movie. A Christmas Carol captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale. Ebenezer Scrooge (JIM CARREY) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, which is to snap at his faithful clerk Bob Cratchit (GARY OLDMAN) and his cheery nephew Fred (COLIN FIRTH). Scrooge later encounters the ghost of his dead business partner Joseph Marley (GARY OLDMAN), who’s paying the price in the afterlife for his own heartlessness. Marley hopes to help Scrooge avoid a similar fate and tells him that he will be visited by three spirits - the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. They take Old Scrooge on an eye-opening journey that reveals truths he is reluctant to face. Along the way, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before he suffers the consequences.
• Jim Carrey played the most roles – seven! He acted as Old Scrooge (plus younger versions), Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present and Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. • Cast member Cary Elwes is actually related to the man believed to be the inspiration for Scrooge. He explained, “John Megid Elwes is an ancestor of mine who was a renowned miser. He was a politician who changed his name from Megid to Elwes in order to gain favour with his uncle, Sir Harvey Elwes, whom he knew was going to die without an heir and he had tons of money. And it worked. He managed to get all Mr. Harvey Elwes’s estates and proceeded to become one of the most famous misers in English history. He was renowned for never changing his clothes.” • When Gary Oldman played Tiny Tim, they physically lowered the floor area over which he walked so that he would appear shorter, like a child. • Jim Carrey worked closely with stunt coordinator Garrett Warren and did many of his own stunts. These included sliding down virtual rooftops, flying over virtual chimney stacks, sliding on a virtual icicle and falling down virtual stairs. For one of the ghost roles, Carrey was also rigged to fly.

A Voyage through the Solar System The Moon & Inner Planets Mars and Earth In this issue, we will plunge even further toward our fiery star, the Sun. Before arriving at the Sun, we will visit the last two planets of the Solar System - Venus and Mercury. So now we leave Earth behind but before we go on to the orbit of Venus, we will take a quick stop at the Moon, Earth’s only companion.
3 6
Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system.
■ The Moon You have all seen the Moon and know how it changes its shape during a month-long cycle. We still don’t know exactly where the moon came from but one popular theory is that in the very early stages of the formation of the solar system, the young Earth was hit by a huge asteroid. When the two bodies collided, there was a huge mess of molten rock-like lava that was created from the heat of the impact. This formed a new blob of material that slowly settled into an orbit around the badly damaged Earth. It eventually cooled and hardened to form the Moon. When astronauts first visited the Moon during the 1960s and 70s, one of their mission’s primary objectives was to bring back bits of Moon rock for analysis. The idea was to try to confirm the origin of the Moon by seeing if any of the rocks from the moon were like the rocks from Earth. In fact, scientists have confirmed that Moon rocks and Earth rocks are quite similar. So this helps to confirm the possibility that Earth was hit by something very large billions of years ago. The Moon is now a desolate world with no atmosphere. For billions of years, it has been bombarded and pummelled with meteors and debris from space, thus leaving its surface pockmarked with millions upon millions of craters.

November - December 2009
Some craters can be seen with your eyes. For example, the enormous Copernicus crater is visible from the whitish rays that seem to splash almost all the way across the Moon’s surface when it is nearly full. The best way to see the craters is with a telescope or binoculars. You don’t need a very powerful telescope; even a pair of binoculars will give you a pretty decent view of the Moon’s craters.

■ Venus The next stop will be the strange world of Venus. Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love,, but, in reality, it is a very unlovable world. Venus is about the same size as Earth… and that is where all similarity ends. The planet is completely covered in thick clouds and is a very dense atmosphere. No direct sunlight ever falls on the surface, so if you were intending to go to Venus to work on your tan, think again! As you enter the atmosphere, you will notice thick storm clouds, ferocious winds and bolts of lightning many times more powerful than what we get here on Earth. As you plough through the dense atmosphere and get to the planet’s surface, the temperature is a sizzling 450°C and the atmospheric pressure is a whopping 90kg per square centimetre - 90 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level on Earth. On the surface of Venus you will be physically crushed to the size of a football. Then if that isn’t enough, when it rains on Venus (which is quite frequently) you will get a boiling blast of sulphuric acid. Despite the fact that we have never visually seen the surface of Venus, radar mapping missions were able to see through the thick clouds revealing a wealth of detail and more than a few strange mysteries from the surface. In some ways, Venus’ surface is a bit like Earth’s with mountains and low-lying regions. Planetary scientists speculate that Venus may once have had ocean and water systems similar to Earth’s. Any water that did exist once is now long gone and the mostly Carbon Dioxide atmosphere has caused the whole planet to heat up to what is now the hottest place in the solar system (apart from the Sun). Carbon Dioxide is responsible for global warming on Earth. It is called a green house gas and if there is too much in the atmosphere it traps all the heat from the sun, causing global warming. This is exactly what has happened on Venus on a very extreme scale. One more really weird thing about Venus is the way it rotates. A single day on Venus is equivalent to 116 Earth days!. Just imagine that - from sunrise to sunrise on the following day is almost four months of Earth time. Venus has the slowest rotation of any of the planets in the solar system, and, worse still, it rotates backwards in comparison to all the other planets. Talk about a strange place! Lastly, it is very easy to see Venus from Earth. If you are outside just before sunrise or after sunset, chances are you will see a very bright point of light not too far from the horizon. Some people call this the evening or morning star. Well, it’s actually not a star but the planet Venus. If you have a small telescope you can often see Venus as a crescent-shaped planet just like the new moon.
This is the last planet in our epic voyage. Mercury was named after the Roman messenger, the God with wings on his feet. Like the God this planet moves swiftly, taking only 88 days to complete an orbit of the Sun. Mercury and the Moon look quite similar and spacecraft that have photographed the Mercury’s surface observed heavily cratered areas with extensive smooth volcanic plains that are large low lying areas filled by lava billions of years ago. Like Earth, Mercury has a very strong magnetic field so this suggests that the planet has a high content of iron in its core. In fact, it is the most iron- rich planet in the solar system. Who knows, one day in the future, we may need to mine Mercury for iron and other minerals! Scientist have even detected that ice may exist deep inside craters at the northern and southern polar regions of Mercury. These are areas that never get exposed to the Sun so the ice stays frozen. Despite this, it is a very extreme environment with temperatures reaching over 400°C on the day side and plummeting to minus 200°C on the night side…brrrr that’s cold! Because Mercury is so close to the sun - only 87 million kilometres it is a very dangerous place for us to live in. It has an extremely thin atmosphere that is blasted by solar radiation many times more powerful than what we receive on Earth. To survive any length of time on the surface, you would need very special space suits to protect you from the extreme temperatures and blistering rays from the Sun. There have only been a few missions to look at this mysterious world. The latest mission called Messenger is due to fly by Mercury again very soon. In fact, at about the time this article is published, Messenger will once again zoom past Mercury and return stunning images to Earth. The Messenger mission satellite is due to go in permanent orbit around mercury in 2011. Hopefully, it will continue to provide valuable information about this distant scorched world.
In the next issue, we will move on to our final destination on our epic adventure through the solar system, the Sun. We will also discuss the BIG stuff… our Sun is, in fact, a puny little dwarf star. Wait till you find out about its monster cousin…and when I say monster, I really mean MONSTER. So don’t miss it! November - December 2009

Ask AAZ ■  Integrated circuits/ Microchips
In the last edition, we talked about Lasers and some of their applications in everyday uses. This week, we will talk about something even more amazing. Integrated Circuits or ICs are everywhere. They are in the calculator you use for school, there is one in your watch, inside your phone and camera, more than a dozen in your computer and at least a few in your washing machine, refrigerator and car. Just about every electronic device these days incorporates integrated circuits at some point. So what is this strange device and why are they everywhere? ICs are in fact amazing devices that do all sorts amazing things. The one you may be familiar with already is the AMD or Intel processor in your computer at home. When we talk about processors, we are actually referring to highly complex Integrated Circuits. The processor in your computer is actually quite small. It is about the size of a 20 sen coin but is packed full of the most amazing electronic devices called semiconductors.
Now for a bit of history. In the early days of radio and electronics, a special device called a valve was used to amplify (make stronger) telephone and radio signals. These valves looked like light bulbs with lots of bits and pieces inside them.
The valves behaved in certain ways that enabled weak signals to be turned into stronger signals. This was a very important discovery and the predecessor to an even more important discovery called the transistor. Valves were big, consumed too much electricity and tended to fail frequently. Researchers at Bell laboratories in the USA worked on an interesting alternative to the valve. This alternative involved using special crystals of silicon that had been treated with chemicals to make them almost conduct electricity. What they wanted was something that behaved like a valve but would use less power and take up less space. Eventually, after much experimentation, they came up with the first transistor. The transistor revolutionised electronics forever. Not only was it very efficient at amplifying radio, television and telephone signals, but it also found uses in many other applications. One of the most important functions they discovered is that under certain conditions, a transistor behaves just like a switch. It can be either on or off.
A transistor is about the size of your small fingernail. It usually comes encased in a small plastic or metal shell. It has three wires coming out of it that are usually soldered to a circuit board. It wasn’t long before transistors found their way into early computers and calculators. Thousands were used in the first computers to act as electronic switches because computers worked in binary code, meaning, with 1 or 0. The transistor switch was perfect for this purpose because when it was switched on that would represent the number 1 and when it was switched off that would represent 0.

Early computers would often take up several rooms filled with equipment. and. even then these machines could only do the most basic functions. What was required was a way to cram in more transistors into smaller spaces to make the computers more powerful.
If ever you have seen the inside of a computer or a handphone, you will see small black squares with hundreds of little wires coming off the sides. These wires are attached to the circuit board and also to the silicon wafer sealed inside the black square.
It was at this point that Integrated Circuits first started to make a difference. Scientists looking for new ways to make transistors smaller discovered that they could print tiny transistor circuits onto small wafers of silicon. As time went by, the technique improved so more and more transistors were crammed into smaller and smaller silicon wafers.
Each of the black squares (Integrated Circuits) has a special function to make your electronic device work properly. When you understand just what an amazing thing an IC is, then you realise that the world of electronics has become a truly wondrous thing that influences our daily lives.
In fact, now your fingernail-sized transistors have been reduced so far in size that you can fit more than 100 million of it into a silicon wafer the size of a 20 sen coin! Probably in your handphone, there would be at least 20-30 million transistors packed into Integrated Circuits.
Try to imagine for a moment what would happen if all of the ICs stopped working all of a sudden. In reality, the entire modern world would come to a grinding halt. No phones, no television, no computers, no internet, no games‌.eeeeek!

Hello everyone, my name is Eion and I am nine years old! I would like to tell you about my trip to Aerospace Camp. There were eight people attending the camp with me – Sam (our teacher), Lee and Kirby (Sam’s assistants), Dashman, Vern Kye, Vern Wei, Suhaimi, Amalina and myself. Hope you enjoy my story!
DAY 1 I woke up at 7 am this morning, very excited about going to space camp but my father wasn’t quite awake yet. So I decided to watch TV until half an hour later when my father woke up. Once he got downstairs, I grabbed my bags, said goodbye to mum and raced to the car. I got to Sam’s place at 8 am. It was very early as it was not opened yet. Fortunately, my father is a member of the Selangor Shooting Club so we went there for some breakfast. After a quick bite, my dad took me for a walk around the shooting club where we saw many bullet casings near the firing range. 45 minutes later, we went back to Sam’s place. We saw a van outside and some footwear outside the entrance. I knew then that the Centre was open! So, we went in to register. After I finished registration, a boy named Dashman arrived and I introduced myself. Two minutes later, I saw Kirby walk in. I said ‘hi’ to her and both Dashman and I went upstairs to the computer room. When we reached the computer room, I saw three boys and one girl. The three boys - Vern Kye, Vern Wei and Suhaimi - were playing games, so I decided to join them while the girl was listening to songs. At 9:30, we made paper aircrafts. Just before the end of the session, Sam taught us how to make a boxcar (with Kirby’s help, of course). At 11:15 am, we had morning break. Everyone had a slice of pandan cake and a glass of soya milk. It was very refreshing. After that, Sam taught us how to make a very weird plane. Later, we used bottles to make a small rocket that could fly and had a parachute. We only made the body of the rocket. After we completed the fins of the rocket, we had lunch. Suhaimi and Amalina did not come with us to McDonalds’. Only Vern Kye, Vern Wei, Sam and I went. I had French fries with tomato sauce and four nuggets with barbeque sauce. After that, we went back to make jet-propelled cars. I made one with three wheels, the one in front was a bottle and two at the back were round sponges. There were also other options to make one with four wheels (all round sponges). My partner, Dashman made the one with four wheels.
it looked okay. So, we decided to tell Sam. But Sam said it’s a race and we had to figure it out ourselves. Dashman tried figuring out what was wrong with it. I looked at the wheels but there seemed to be nothing wrong. Vern Kye’s was of a different shape with four wheels. But still, it was slow. Vern Wei’s was also of a different shape, moved slowly, and the balloon burst. Luckily, Sam had a few spare balloons. After that, Amalina and Suhaimi raced with me and Dashman. Dashman’s still failed, Suhaimi’s was not so bad, and mine was not bad either; but Amalina won because her front wheel was a round sponge. So I decided to change mine to a sponge. We raced again. But this time, her car went over my car! Luckily, my car didn’t break, but the third time, mine flew from upstairs to downstairs, and it broke. I was able to fix it so it was not so bad. At 4:00 pm, we had afternoon tea. We had banana cake and a cup of soft drink, but I didn’t eat or drink. Later, all of us wrote our names to NASA because we were going to Mars! Well, we are really going to Mars because a robot with a chip that had our names on it was going to Mars! At 5:00 pm, we made the parachute for the rocket (with Kirby’s help). We decorated our parachute using marker pens. Suhaimi’s parachute was weird because it looked like a 2009 smiling. After finishing the parachute, Kirby went home. For dinner, we had burger, sausages, and mashed potatoes. After dinner, we played computer games and we had a movie presentation. The name of the movie was “Fly Me to the Moon”. I thought it was very funny. We slept at 1:30 in the morning and all of us had a pleasant rest, except me because I had to go to the toilet but it was pitch black down there and I’m scared of the dark. At least the toilet light was on. It was too cold for me but I made it through the night and was fresh as a daisy in the morning.
When we finished, Sam gave us a balloon and made us choose which straw to use for our engine - the big straw or the small. Everyone chose big straws. So, we stuck the balloon and the straw together. Later on, we tested the cars. First, I raced with Dashman. But there seemed to be something wrong with Dashman’s car. It kept going left and was slow. I checked it, but November - December 2009

DAY 2
The next morning, I played computer games for a few minutes. Then Dashman and Vern Wei woke up and we played some games. Then I got bored and went downstairs and saw Lee. When Sam woke up, he made Milo and tea for us and he also brought a few small packets of biscuits. Then we had to pack all our stuff to go to Bernam River Airfield (BRA). We had to take all our bags down. It was hard work. Before we left, we made wings that could fly. It was hard work shaving the edges. Once we had made it, we had to colour it and put a piece of clay in front. Then, we tested them downstairs. Mine flew well, but Suhaimi’s flew better than mine. After I adjusted mine, it was better. Then, Sam showed us something we had to do for the contest. We had to hold the aircraft in one hand, while on the other hand, we had to hold something like a piece of cardboard to steer the wings. After lunch, we had to buy things to take with us to BRA. We bought potatoes, snacks, and something to eat. Then, we went back to the centre, immediately packed our stuff and off we went to the airfield. Suhaimi and his sister sat in Sam’s van while the rest of us were in Lee’s car. It took nearly 3 hours to reach there. In the middle of the journey, I fell asleep, and didn’t hear my phone ring. When I woke up, my friends told me that my phone rang and it was from my grandmother. She missed me so much. I told her I would be back soon.
After we arrived, we finished our rocket and Sam showed us a spudakiss. A spudakiss is made of plastic and is very useful. It can be used as a potato launcher! Sam then took us for a swim. It was almost night time when we came out. We took our baths and changed and then we ate. Everybody was so hungry after such a long and tiring day. I ate three hotdogs! Then we went to see the fireflies before going back to sleep. I was so tired I fell asleep very quickly.
DAY 3 When I woke up, I was surprised that it was still raining and it was cold. Some of the others were already awake. After breakfast, we finished our rockets. Then Sureen took Vern Wei, Dashman and I out for a flight. It was great but also a bit scary. Well, whatever it was, Sureen is a great pilot. After we landed, we got out of the plane and the others, Lee, Amalina and Suhaimi went for their flight. They had a great time too! When they landed, we changed our clothes and went swimming. We practised swimming. Suhaimi learned how to swim and I learned, er, let’s just say I learned the opposite - floating. When we were done, we showered and we packed our things. We loaded them in the car and wrote what we liked about the Bernam River Airfield. When all of us had finished writing, we headed back to Sam’s place. We had a competition to see which cars could go the fastest and the farthest. I won first place, Suhaimi was second and Amalina won third place. We got prizes and headed to the computer room to wait for our parents. I said goodbye to everybody including Sam and Lee. I had a wonderful time. I hope you enjoyed my story! Bye-bye.
Life in Kedah Trains take you a bit further than other forms of public transport and to the outskirts of the hectic city. Being retirees, like most of the people living in my grandparent’s area, life is relaxed compared to the bustling life of the people who live and work at the city centre. In the morning, after the subuh prayers which are done around 6pm, my grandfather and a few of his cheerful friends would walk around the football field located across the road from their houses. After the jog, a warm cup of coffee or tea would be taken by my grandparents while reading the newspaper, to keep them updated on world events. Kedah will always be remembered by me. It is where my parents are from and where most of my cousins live. My grandparents on my mother’s side reside there, too. My grandparents on my father’s side, however, have passed away, but still remain in my heart. The place I will be talking about is Alor Setar, capital of Kedah, where my mother’s parents live. Kedah is famously known for the paddy fields. So in Malay, Kedah is dubbed as jelapang padi Malaysia. Paddy fields are located at the side of the mountains where rainwater can flow down from the peak and into the fields. My grandparent’s house, however, is located in the city and has no paddy fields around it. Situated on low land, their house is surrounded by other houses and roads. The mode of transportation to get around the city is by car, bus, taxi and even trains. 36
November - December 2009
In the evenings, my older cousin usually plays football while I sit on the swing with my grandfather and be entertained by his never-ending supplies of stories. Then we would have our evening tea along with traditional Malay snacks called kuih cooked by my grandmother. Food is one of the factors which gets my adrenaline pumping at the thought of Kedah. There is a hawker centre near my grandfather’s house which serves the best delicacies Kedah has to offer. From bihun sup to kuih to chicken rice, the food there is absolutely scrumptious. Bihun sup is a famous Kedah meal which consists of thin noodles in a bowl of hot soup. Another thing I love about Kedah is football. The support for Kedah FL is amazing. I may be a Kuala Lumpur boy, but my heart remains in the heart-warming traditions of Kedah.
