This one was taken during the 1979 All Ireland Football final between Kerry and Dublin and shows Mikey Sheehy, who was later named as footballer of the year going airborne with Dublin’s Brian Mullins. The match took place on September 16, 1979 and Kerry won on a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-08.

Town centre homecoming parade planned for Kerry

Win or lose on Sunday, Killarney is planning a homecoming parade for the Kerry team on Monday.

And after last year’s poorly received event in Fitzgerald Stadium, it has been decided to revert to the more traditional welcoming party in the town centre.

As a result the Glebe Car Park on College St will be closed to traffic from 7am on Monday morning to facilitate the event. The car park will re-open for car parking purposes on Tuesday morning.

Fans travelling to the homecoming are advised to plan their journey as several other car parks in the town centre will be closed for other events.

The Fair Hill car park is fully closed to accommodate the annual visit of Bird’s Fun Fair to town.

The Killarney Canine Club hosts its annual International Dog Show on Monday and Tuesday and the Cathedral Car Park on the bottom of New Street will remain out of bounds on both days.

Fitzgerald stadium could become the Nou Camp of Ireland

The proposed major redevelopment of Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney will deliver big dividends, not alone to the town itself, but also to all of Kerry, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill.

The stadium development will create additional jobs and accommodation needs with its sports and concert potential and permanent employment.

“I am strongly of the opinion that a Kerry Sports and GAA Museum tour experience should be an integral part of this proposed redevelopment and will be essential in the success of the project. If you visit the famous Stadia of the world, such as Camp Nou in Barcelona, you can experience a virtual history of their sport as well as viewing memorabilia of all kinds,” he said.

larly, will attract many additional visitors to Kerry and can provide an education in the glory that is Gaelic Sports in this county, including all other sports. The Glenbeigh man also believes that the venue could be used to host major concerts in the future.

Kilcummin man fighting wildfires in Rhodes

A Kilcummin man is volunteering with locals in an effort to fight the wildfires that have devasted areas of Greece in the last week.

Following a heatwave that has gripped parts of southern Europe and North Africa, 20,000 people, mostly tourists, were evacuated from houses and hotels on the Greek island of Rhodes last weekend as wildfires ravaged mountainous forest areas in the centre and east of the island.

Kilcummin man Cormac Rowe, working as a diving instructor in Rhodes Town in the north of the island, has been helping locals in their attempt to bring the fires under control.

“Life is carrying on as normal in Rhodes town,” said Cormac, “But obviously there aren’t as many tourists around, so we’ve been travelling about an hour inland, to help out where we can.”

As aircraft waterbomb the larger blazes, those on the ground dig trenches to contain the fires, smother flames with soil and douse surrounding vegetation.

“Fires are popping up all the time. It’s pretty energy-sapping, but locals are handing out food and drink to keep us

going,” added Cormac. Firefighting efforts have been hampered by daytime temperatures of over 40 C, and strong winds which are spreading the fire through tinder-dry undergrowth. With a tenth of the island burnt out and acres of forest devastated, Cormac described the situation as ‘like being in a war-zone. It’s apocalyptic.”

Parents Steve and Teresa O’Mahony have been fighting government bureaucracy for months.

The urgently need a hoist fitted to their home to help them care for their daughter Alexis. She suffers from a pyruvate dehydrogenase, PDH, deficiency and she has a brain injury. She has cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, visual impairment, a subluxation of her hip and is at high risk of aspiration.

In recent months the family were dealing with Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and the Department of Health, in an effort to get a grant to fit a hoist to their home.

None of the government departments were willing to commit to the scheme until political intervention by TDs Pa Daly and Norma Foley and Tralee councillor Jim Finucane.

It was announced this week that that

fixed track hoists will be included in the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and People with a Disability Schemes.

“It is a big relief that funding has finally been reinstated and a clear pathway now exists in the years ahead for those across Ireland that require ceiling track hoists,” Steve told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Access to the scheme without worry now exists and enables people with a disability to live day to day with their dignity and comfort protected. It should never have taken almost three years to get the legislation in place and a lot needs to be learned in terms of engagement and communication channels between government departments.

“Ultimately it is some of society's most vulnerable that suffered because of the impasse and it is also society's most vulnerable and their families and carers that will benefit enormously from the scheme.

A thank you to all Kerry politicians that engaged on this in various times."

Oak tree planted to mark 40 years of Rotary Club

Killarney Rotary Club marked its 40th anniversary by planting a native Oak Tree on the grounds of the Killarney Great Southern.

The new tree, planted on Wednesday, sits next to another one that was planted

to celebrate the club’s 21st birthday. That tree now stands at nearly 10 metres. “This is a very proud occasion for all the members and we would like to thank the Great Southern Killarney for permitting us to plant this native tree marking this special year in our Club. The last tree that

New Dereeen sports complex given go ahead

Plans for a new sports complex at Derreen have been given the green light by Killarney Municipal District councillors.

The facility will include two basketball courts, a judo hall alongside Tennis courts. Hanging rooms, toilets showers storerooms. and car parking will also be included in the plan.

A new pedestrian access bridge or tunnel will be built to allow access from the town side of the bypass to new

sports centre.

The new centre, which will be built on council owned lands between the existing Legion GAA and the Killarney Celtic FC pitches will serve as a home to Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, St Paul’s Basketball Club and Killarney Judo Club.

All three have come together under an umbrella group called Derreen Sports Centre CLG, and it will manage the new 2160 square metre facility.

George Bernard Shaw honoured at Muckross hotel

The link between Killarney, one of Ireland’s greatest playwriters and a Hollywood blockbuster were celebrated at a local hotel on Wednesday.

The Muckross Park Hotel and Spa unveiled an oil painting of George Bernard Shaw on Wednesday. The painting, commissioned by the hotel, was created by Donegal-based artist Mark McFadden.

Wednesday would have been the legendary writers 167th birthday.

It is said that wrote parts of his play ‘Pygmalion’ at Muckross Park Hotel in 1913.

The play was the springboard for the screen play for the 1965 Hollywood blockbuster ‘My Fair Lady’.

The movie, a musical comedy, and which featured Aubrey Hepburn, won eight academy awards.

Crokes hero Tony Brosnan ruled out of Sunday's final

Kerry Senior Player Tony Brosnan will be unavailable for selection for Sunday’s All Ireland Final V Dublin in Croke Park. The sharpshooter from Dr. Crokes is suffering from a recurring respiratory problem and will be out of action for this weekend.

Another arrest in Rath murder case

Kerry gardai have arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the murder of Killarney Thomas Dooley in a Tralee graveyard last October.

The man was arrested at an undisclosed location on Wednesday. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in

Kerry. He is the ninth person to be arrested in relation to the case.

So far three men and a juvenile have been charged with the murder of Dooley at Rath Cemetery in Tralee last October.

They will face a trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Pa Daly said Killarney has the second highest waiting time for Driving Tests in the state.

Deputy Daly said:

“Driving test waiting time of 43 weeks in Killarney is considerably worse than other towns of a similar size.

“Following a Parliamentary Question submitted by Sinn Féin relating to Driving Test Waiting Lists the answer confirms our suspicion that waiting times in Killarney are worse than elsewhere.

“For example, Thurles has a wait time of 13 weeks, with Athlone and Ballina coming in at just 15 weeks wait”

“Many people, particularly young people, have contacted me frustrated with the lengthy waiting time and complaining that they cannot drive themselves to school, college, work, and sports training.

“I have written to the Minister seeking answers as to why the wait time is exceptionally high in Killarney, and what steps are being taken to address the situation."

Councillor to donate portion of wages to cancer bus

Newly co-opted councillor Martin Grady will donate a portion of his Kerry County Council salary to the Kerry Cancer Support Group –Health Link bus service.

Grady replaced his father Donal on Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District earlier this month. He will serve out the remainder of the current council’s term ahead of next summer local elections.

Grady, a member of the Killarney Fire and Rescue team is entitled to a wage, as are all other elected public representatives, for his work as a councillor.

He will donate a portion of his political wages to the Kerry Cancer Support Group’s Health Link bus service for the

remainder of this term and if elected next summer will continue to do so.

Kerry Cancer Support Group Health Link Transport in run by a voluntary board and two paid employees.

Since its foundation 14 years ago the bus service has relied on voluntary dontations and fundraising efforts by local supporters.

“I want to give back to the people and the local community,” he said. “This is a great service to the people of Kerry. 75% of people diagnosed with cancer avail of this service , it’s up and running 14 years, it deserves ever bit of recognition and funding it gets to ensure it’s there into the future. With the rising running costs of fuel etc I felt I had to do something to help.”

Sustainability Manager with The Killarney Park tells the Killarney Advertiser about running an environmentally friendly hotel and her role in the new coffee cup scheme in Killarney.

What are the benefits of becoming a more sustainable organisation?

There are many benefits to becoming a sustainable organisation.

There is of course a financial benefit to resource efficiency which is appealing to any business in the current climate. Also, we are noticing the rise of the eco-conscious consumer and there are numerous studies to confirm that customers are looking to make sustainable choices. It is important that businesses prioritise sustainable innovation to not only differentiate themselves from competitors but also for long term growth. More than half the world’s GDP is reliant on nature and if we want to future-proof our businesses we need to protect that natural capital.

We also just have to turn on the news to see the impact climate change is having globally, businesses have an ethical responsibility to do the right thing. The next generation will remember who stood on the right side of history.

You were heavily involved in the coffee cup project, how did the idea come about?

The idea started over a year ago. I was trying to implement circular solutions to our waste in the hotels and at this time Killian and Emily Treacy were opening Luna deli + wine. We sat down to discuss sustainable cup options for the shop and the hotels. I was always uncomfortable with the fact that most people consider compostables as an eco-friendly choice when in fact less than 1% of the 200 million cups thrown away every year in Ireland are actually composted. Following on from this we participated in

the KWD County Clean Up, where we noticed that the most common source of litter in The National Park was single use cups and lids. This led to me, Killian and Ciara Treacy coming together to see if we could come up with a solution to the problem. The impact would only be significant and effective if the whole town got involved. We held a town hall style meeting with all the independent coffee shops where we posed the question “Could Killarney become single use coffee cup free?” We were met with resounding enthusiasm from the coffee shop owners and from there we got to work.

I think the last time I checked there was well over 50 coffee shops and hotels on board with the project, you must be pleased with the reaction so far?

I am thrilled and immensely proud to be part of a community that comes together the way Killarney has. The positive reaction from businesses and customers has been overwhelming and really highlights the fact that the people of Killarney want to protect their local environment.

Do you believe it is community lead projects like this that will make a real difference to our environment in the long run?

Community projects are a key part of tackling climate change and creating resilience in local communities. This small project alone removes over a million paper cups from our local environment - but it also mitigates the environmental impact of producing these cups, transporting them across the world, and the emissions from both the waste itself and

the infrastructure required to process the waste. That’s a big impact from a small local behavioural change. We can’t underestimate the potential of local communities.

Do you think that there is the potential for other local projects like this to tackle other environmental issues?

Absolutely! Killarney Coffee Cup Project is the first of a series of initiatives for Killarney, so stay tuned!

Vintage club bans single use coffee cups

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club has become the first club in Killarney to adopt a single use coffee cup scheme.

Earlier this month it was announced that Killarney is the first town in Ireland to move away from disposable coffee cups. Several businesses including cafes, ho-

tels and shops have bought into the idea. It was rolled out on a gradual basis throughout July but the town is set to go coffee cup free from Monday.

“As you know Killarney is moving away from the one use cup and Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club are proud to be doing the same,” said club secretary Richard O’Donoghe.

“Every Thursday night, the members

meet to work on old vehicles, which are later raffled for charity or even just to organise events. Every night ends with a cup of tea and a chat, so now each member has their own reusable cup to help cut down in waste.”

Rare Killarney photographs on show in Dublin exhibition

Two rare photographs that depict Killarney life in the 19th and 20th centuries are set to go on display as part of larger exhibition at the National Library of Ireland.

The National Photographic Archive, which is based in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, captures the social, cultural and technological changes that have taken place across Ireland from the middle of the 19th century up to the turn of this century, and has a number of photos charting Kerry life.

The exhibition includes images which give a glimpse into Irish history and the evolution of photography. The exhibition comprises 50 photographs taken between 1858 – 2001, representing the age of analogue photography in Ireland. Photographs on display include early forms such as salt paper print and stereo-pair up to more contemporary photography.

A featured image taken at the Gap of Dunloe, Killarney, Co. Kerry features a young woman, by the name of Bridget

Sweeney, who became known as the ‘Gap Girl’. This is part of a series of seven portraits of local women who sold refreshments at popular tourist sites Killarney. ‘Stereopairs’ are identical images taken by a camera with two lenses, creating a 3D image when viewed through a special viewer called a ‘stereoscope’.

The exhibition also includes a photograph from the World Ploughing Championships which took place in Killarneyon 8th October 1954. Competitors from 12 countries challenged for the championship which was won by Hugh Barr, from Coleraine, County Derry. The aerial photograph shows the stalls promoting and selling agricultural goods.

“What’s collected today becomes history tomorrow. As Ireland’s memory-keeper,

the National Library of Ireland continues to collect and share a vibrant national collection that documents historical and contemporary life on the island of Ireland. The NLI houses over five million

photographs, which are a visual record of the history and culture of Ireland,” said Acting Head of Exhibitions, Learning and Programming at the NLI and curator of this exhibition, Sara Smyth.

Lynch narrowly misses out on semi-final spot in Youth Olympics

Colleges from the United States of America are said to be keeping an eye on Killarney Valley Athletic Club 800m runner Oisin Lynch.

Lynch narrowly missed out on a place in the 800m finals at the European Youth Olympics in Slovenia.

He finished in 11th place in the semi final but rued a slow start over the opening 400m which ultimately cost him a top ten finish and a place in the final.

“Keep an eye on this young sportsman as he will gain more international caps and

podium finishes into the future. Currently a number of colleges in the USA are keeping track of his progress,” said the club’s Jeremiah Griffin.

“He can be very proud of himself. The young athlete would have preferred a faster first 400m getting him closer to his personal best, which would have secured him a final spot.”

Lynch was accompanied on the trip to Slovenia by his proud parents Martina and Con. His father is a distance coach at Killarney Valley Athletic Club.

JulyFest is a winner at Killarney Races

JulyFest at Killarney Races delivered a fun-filled programme with record-breaking crowds, spectacular views, top-class racing and an atmosphere that was not to be missed.

Races n’ Roses was the theme on day three. Eight Roses from the International Rose of Tralee festival got to meet their escorts for the first time at the race-meeting and they were joined by last year’s winner Rachel Duffy. The roses brought colour, glamour and good luck on the day.

Ladies and gents from all across the country arrived in style as Lee Strand Best Dressed fashion event got underway. The fashion was fierce and celebrity judges Tadgh Fleming and Pamela Uba had a tough challenge whittling down the ten finalists.

Siobhan Murphy from Rathmore, was named as the Lee Strand Best Dressed Lady who won a specially commissioned crystal vase and a trip for two to Paris. Siobhan’s stunning look was created with an Ollie & Mac bright magenta dress, paired with a rented lime green and magenta headpiece and matching heels from Asos.

Siobhán said “I am over the moon to have won, there was such a high standard here today. I am in shock and so

grateful to be picked by the judges. Thanks so much to Lee Strand and the Killarney Races, I had a great day out.”

The Lee Strand Best Dressed Gent winner was a Limerick man who is now living in Tralee, Brian O’Connor. Brian wore a blue blazer from Celsius and it was themed perfectly with a shirt, pants and belt from Suits Select, shoes from Penneys and a hat from Parfois. A new book by Tralee writer Denis Brassil will touch a chord with Killarney readers.

“What Anna did next’ was a labour of love for the Tralee woman. She first started writing the book in 2013 with her sister Martha.

When Martha passed away in 2018 the book was put on the long finger but during lockdown Denise felt she had unfinished business and honoured her late sister by finishing the book.

Denise is well known around Killarney. Her day job takes her to all of the hotels and hospitality sector businesses selling food on behalf of a nationwide cash and carry business.

Her sister Helena lives locally and is married to local businessman David Randles.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: How to paint the exterior of a new build home

BEFORE YOU START

With freshly plastered surfaces, leave approximately six months to dry completely before painting. Once the walls have dried out, you have picked your colours, and have checked the weather forecast, you will be ready to go!

STEP 1: PREP

Protect surrounding surfaces by laying down dust sheets. Mask off exterior features and fittings (e.g., windows, door frames etc.) with a reliable masking tape such as Deltec Masking Tape Extreme.

STEP 2: CLEAN

Take advantage of the summer sun and tackle your exterior painting project. A new coat of paint can transform the appearance of your newbuild home and safeguard it from weather damage.

For particularly dirty walls, consider power washing. Otherwise, start by dusting and cleaning the walls until they are free from dirt, grease and other contaminants. Remove algae or mould by using an anti-fungal wash such as FARBEX Exterior Fungicidal Wash.

STEP 3: SMOOTH & REPAIR

Once the walls have dried out, scrape them down so there are no uneven surfaces. Fill cracks or holes with an exterior

filler like Prestonett Exterior Filler. Once dry, smooth out with sandpaper and wipe away any dust.

STEP 4: CHECK IF YOUR WALLS NEED SEALING

A simple test is to run your hand along the wall. If you're left with a powdery residue, you will need to seal them. Apply Ralston Wall Primer to ensure the first coat of paint adheres correctly. Dilute with water by a ratio of 1:1, making sure to stir thoroughly beforehand. Apply the primer to your wall as you would a normal paint and give it roughly four hours to dry.

Tip: If your house faces onto the street, display “wet paint” signs so passers-by don’t get any nasty surprises!

STEP 3: PAINT!

Always use a masonry paint when painting your home’s exterior. Dulux Weathershield is made in Ireland and is perfect for our mild, wet climate.

Dilute your first coat with water by about 10% and stir thoroughly. Always paint from the top and work your way downwards with the aid of your cutting-in brush, masonry brush and roller. Allow to dry for 2-4 hours depending on manufacturer’s instructions. Then, go ahead and apply a second coat without thinning the paint, you need to apply a third coat depending on your wall's surface.

Top Tip: Always remove masking tape before the paint has fully dried.

“May I send my deepest condolences to Sinéad O’Connor’s father John, the members of her family and to all those with whom she shared her life.

My first reaction on hearing the news of Sinéad’s loss was to remember her extraordinarily beautiful, unique voice. What was striking in all of the recordings she made and in all of her appearances was the authenticity of the performance, while her commitment to the delivery of the song and its meaning was total.

To those of us who had the privilege of knowing her, one couldn’t but always be struck by the depth of her fearless commitment to the important issues which she brought to public attention, no matter how uncomfortable those truths may

have been.

What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her.

The way in which she was able to move across the different forms of the arts was a singular achievement, as was the way her voice went around the world and how it was received. Her accomplishments included a body of work for film through the production of perfectly chosen and widely acclaimed lyrics.

Sinéad O’Connor’s voice and delivery was in so many different ways original, extraordinary and left one with a deep impression that to have accomplished all she did while carrying the burden which she did was a powerful achievement in its own way.

Her contribution joins those great achievements of Irish women who contributed to our lives, its culture and its history in their own unique but unforgettable ways. May her spirit find the peace she sought in so many different ways.”

Almost 60% of local authority home loans rejected

The Government-backed scheme was established to help people secure a mortgage if they are struggling to get one from a bank.

However, figures provided by the Department of Housing to the Social Democrats show that out of a total of 870 applications up to the end of June, 515 were unsuccessful.

The Local Authority Home Loan scheme allows people to borrow up to €324,000, depending on what part of the country they live in.

Applications are sent to the Housing Agency for assessment who then make recommendations to local authorities to approve or refuse the loan application. In 2022 of the 2,168 applications made under the scheme, 1,247 were turned down.

Ship carrying 2,857 cars burns off Dutch coast

A fire is still blazing on a ship off the Dutch coast with 2,857 vehicles on board since Tuesday, killing one person and injuring several others.

The 199-metre Panama-registered Fremantle Highway was en route from Germany to Egypt.

Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning boat to cool it down, but using too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said. A salvage vessel hooked on to stop it drifting.

A coastguard spokesperson explained that the fire began near an electric car. The ship was carrying 2,857 cars from

various manufactures, 25 of which were electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz said that it had about 350 cars on board. The incident forced Lamborghini to restart Aventador production to replace the destroyed supercars.

In the aftermath of the Felicity Ace disaster in 2022, when a cargo ship carrying 4,000 cars burnt out and sank two weeks later, several shipping companies announced a ban on the transport of EVs.

Norwegian ferry company Havila Kystruten has also banned electric vehicles from its ships.

32 Roses will represent the Irish diaspora worldwide this year from Rose Centres across Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

This year will mark Dáithí’s 12th year presenting the show, and new presenter Kathryn can’t wait to join him onstage and meet this year’s International Roses.

Greek wildfires reach outskirts of Athens

Wildfires reached the outskirts of Athens on Thursday as strong winds cause flare-ups around Greece, disrupting motorway traffic and rail services.

The fires have raged across parts of

the country during three successive Mediterranean heatwaves over the past two weeks, leaving five people dead, including two firefighting pilots, and triggering a huge evacuation of tourists on the island of Rhodes.

Privacy group NOYB, challenges Ryanair's use of facial recognition

NOYB, led by Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems, filed the complaint with Spain's data protection agency on behalf of a complainant who booked a Ryanair flight through the Spanish-based online travel agency eDreams.

Ryanair, Europe's largest by passenger numbers, says on its website that in order to comply with safety and security requirements it must verify the identity of passengers' booking with travel agents because agents often do not provide Ryanair with customers' contact and payment details.

Passengers can avoid verifying through facial recognition by showing up at the airport at least 2 hours before departure or submitting a form and picture

of their passport or national ID card in advance, a process Ryanair said can take seven days to complete. A similar process is not required when booking through Ryanair's website or mobile phone app.

ECB raises interest rates again

The European Central Bank raised its deposit rate to a historic high yesterday but kept its options open on whether more increases will be required to bring down inflation against a worsening economic backdrop.

Thursday's hike, the ninth in a row, increases the rate that the ECB pays on banks' deposits from 3.5% to 3.75%, its highest level since 2000. The rate that banks pay to borrow at the ECB's weekly auctions was also increased to 4.25% from 4% while daily loans will now cost 4.5%, from 4.25%.

Rob Duggan gave his friend Mikie Galvin the best possible pre-wedding gift by taking a start to finish victory finish on Sunday’s Imokilly Rally in East Cork.

Galvin is best known for co-driving for Keith Cronin on British Rally Championship events.

Both competitors went to school together, started rallying together and have previously won events as a team. However the last time they worked together was the 2019 Rally of the Lakes. They decided to team-up one more time ahead of Mikie’s big day next week when he marries Ellen O'Shea.

“We don’t get to do this too often,” said Aghadoe man Galvin and the end of the event.

“Rob is my best man in two weeks’ time, so this is brilliant, such a good day.”

Conor Murphy and Sean Collins were third in a similar Ford Escort to Duggan’s making it two Aghadoe crews in the top three.

Motor club launches youth programme

KDMC2 is aimed at newcomers to motorsport regardless of age but there is a heavy emphasis on youths.

The idea is to take newcomers away from the mundane formalities of forma club meetings but instead create social occasions and introductory to motorsport events for them to enjoy.

Last Friday a group of experienced club members and a host of newcomers enjoyed a treasure hunt in and around the Faha area.

Treasure hunts are considered an entry into rally navigation and while some entrants may go on an pursue a career like Paul Nagle, Noel O’Sullivan and Mikie Galvin, they also serve as a great social occasion that can be enjoyed by all age groups.

Around 30 people attended the event. Well-known local marshals and volunteers Ciara and Orla Galvin, aided by experienced club driver were deemed the winners of navigational event but,

according to main organiser Mike Shea, the treasure hunt also served as a great introduction to club activities.

“A special thanks to all of those who attended this Friday’s treasure hunt around the Faha area, the first of many social events organiSed by the KDMC 2 programme, said Mike who is also the club’s vice chairman.

Medical Cards

If you have a medical card issued by the Health Service Executive (HSE), you can get certain health services free of charge. Normally, your dependent spouse or partner and your children are also covered for the same range of health services. Anyone who is ‘ordinarily resident’ in Ireland can apply for a medical card. This means that you are living in Ireland and intend to live here for at least one year. To qualify for a medical card, your weekly income must be below a certain figure for your family size.

What income is assessed in the means test?

Cash income, savings, investments and property (except for your own home) are taken into account in the means test. There are weekly income limits depending on your household size and there are also allowable expenses, including childcare costs, rent and mortgage payments which will increase your income limit. Income from savings, investments or property of €36,000 for a single person or €72,000 for a couple is disregarded. You should speak to your local Citizens Information Centre to get more information on how the means test would apply in your personal circumstances.

If your only income is from social welfare allowances or benefits or HSE allowances, you should be granted a medical card even though your payment may be over the income guidelines for your age and situation.

How are young people, aged 16-25, including students assessed?

If you are aged 16–25 and dependent on a parent or guardian, you are eligible for a medical card if your parent or guardian has a medical card. (This does not apply if their income is above the means test limit and they have a discretionary medical card.) If you are already included on your family's card, you will be sent your own card when you turn 16.

If you live with your parent or guardian and you have an income over the medical card income limit for a single person living with family, you are considered financially independent and the usual means test applies.

If you are not living with or dependent on a parent or guardian, then you are considered as financially independent, regardless of income, and your application is assessed using the standard means test.

Is it easier for someone aged over 70 to qualify for a medical card?

There is a more generous means test for people aged over 7O. If you are aged 70 or over you qualify for a medical card, if your gross income is not more than €550 a week if you are single or not more than €1050 a week for a couple.

The assessment of a couple for medical card purposes is based on the age of the older person so if one of you is aged 70 or older, you will both qualify for a medical card, if your combined gross income is €1050 or less a week.

What is a ‘discretionary medical card’?

If your income is above the limit, you may still be able to get a medical card if your circumstances would result in financial hardship without one. This is sometimes called a discretionary medical card.

The application process for the discretionary medical card is the same as for the means tested medical card, but you should also include a medical report and information about your family’s medical expenses in your application. There is a standard medical report template form, which your GP can fill in, available on www2.hse.ie. Discretionary medical cards are issued for a specific time frame. The time frame will depend on your circumstances.

Under what circumstances can you get an Emergency Medical Card?

There are some emergency situations where you can get help outside of the normal medical card application process. You can get an emergency medical card if you:

• have a terminal illness and have been told you have 24 months or less to live

• are receiving end-of-life treatment

• need urgent ongoing care and urgently need a medical card

What is a GP Visit Card?

If you are not eligible for a medical card you may be eligible for a GP visit card. A GP visit card allows you to visit a participating family doctor (GP) for free however, prescribed drugs are not free. The GP visit card does cover visits to GP out of hours services. Blood tests to diagnose or monitor a condition are covered.

Who can get a GP visit card?

• All children under the age of 6 can get a GP visit card.

• If you get Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance, at full or half-rate, you are eligible for a GP visit card.

• The GP visit card is available to everyone aged over 70 without an income test.

• If you are aged under 70, eligibility for the GP visit card is means tested. That is, your income is assessed by the HSE as part of the application process. You should contact your local Citizens Information Centre for more detailed information about the means-test. In order to qualify for a GP visit card, you must meet the eligibility rules and be ordinarily resident in Ireland. That is, you must have been, or intend to be, living in Ireland for at least one year.

Kerry and Dublin ready to rock Croke Park

If you love football, that roar between Amhrann na bhFiann and throw-in is sweeter than Sweetest Thing, more glorious than Glory Days, more satisfying than Satisfaction, and more paradisiacal than Paradise.

Some of the most famous rock musicians in the world have played in Croke Park.

U2, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones, to name but a few.

This week, hundreds of thousands of people queued online for hours on end, trying (and in most cases failing) to get tickets for Coldplay’s upcoming gigs at GAA headquarters.

Hosting concerts is a major source of income for the Association and it’s wonderful to see these global superstars performing in our nation’s most iconic stadium. But with all due respect to Bono and the Boss and Jagger and Chris Martin, none of them will ever rock Croke Park like Dublin and Kerry do. The deafening noise at 3.29pm on Sunday would drown out all their biggest hits.

The game’s greatest rivals on the main stage in the All-Ireland final. Music to our ears.

BACK TOGETHER

If you’ll bear with the musical metaphor for just a little longer, Dublin really got the band back together for 2023. Stephen Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion, all preposterously decorated players, returned to the panel after some time away. To paraphrase Kerry manager Jack O’Connor, they didn’t come back to make up the numbers.

After coming up short in 2021 and 2022, the Dubs are hungry for another All-Ireland. It would be a flamboyant exclamation point at end of some of their careers, most notably for Cluxton, James McCarthy and Mick Fitzsimons, all of whom are seeking a record-breaking ninth Celtic Cross.

For others, like Con O’Callaghan and Brian Fenton, it would be a communiqué to the rest of the country that they haven’t gone away, and that they’re not going anywhere any time soon.

Kerry, meanwhile, are plotting a very different arc. Having secured what was, for the vast majority of the panel, a first All-Ireland last year, they are now hoping to show us they are no one-hit wonders.

In David Clifford they have the sport’s undisputed superstar, a young man who has been in outrageous form since around 2004. He was born in 1999. Tony Brosnan has sadly been ruled out due to the recurrence of a respiratory issue, but the return of Killian Spillane (ankle) is a boost.

As for Dublin, Seán Bugler missed the semi-final with a calf injury. His availability was unknown as we went to print.

VERDICT: Dublin will provide Kerry with their toughest test to date and their strength in depth is a definite advantage. However, Kerry have proven themselves to be obdurate in close games and, as they proved in 2022, they have enough intelligence and skill to get the job done. Kerry to win by a point or two.

A game in which heroes are made

Prior to 1975, Kerry and Dublin had met in the senior football championship 13 times in 90 years. Between ’75 and ’85, the rivalry exploded into life. Mick O’Dwyer and Kevin Heffernan’s legendary teams faced each other seven times in 11 seasons, with Kerry winning five times and Dublin twice. The sides captured ten All-Ireland titles between them during this spell (Kerry 7 Dublin 3).

After ’85, there was no Kerry-Dublin clash in the championship until 2001, when Kerry advanced to the All-Ireland semi-final after a replay.

The Kingdom won the other four matches in the 2000s before Dublin took over and won five out of six in the 2010s (the drawn final in 2019 was the best result Kerry could manage).

Fans in this part of the world will be hoping that last year’s semi-final victory is the start of new decade of dominance over their fiercest rivals. The 2023 final has the potential to set the tone.

Sunday’s match will be the 20th Kerry-Dublin encounter since the fuse was lit in 1975. Here are the players

who emerged as heroes in the last 19 fixtures.

1975: A young Kerry team went into this final as underdogs but a neatly taken first-half goal by John Egan set them up for an unexpected 2-12 to 0-11 win.

1976: The Dubs bounced back in major way in the 1976 final, thanks in part to a postage stamp penalty by their iconic full forward Jimmy Keaveney.

1977: Kerry’s victory in 1975 was beginning to look like a flash in the pan by the end of 1977. A memorable goal by rampaging midfielder Bernard Brogan contributed to another comfortable Dublin win in the semi-final.

1978: The pressure was on O’Dwyer in ’78. Defeat against Dublin in the final would more than likely have led to his dismissal, but Mikey Sheehy’s impudent chip over the head of Paddy Cullen propelled Kerry towards a massive 5-11 to 0-9 win.

1979: Stacks man Sheehy was to the fore again the following year. His powerful strike in the 10th minute of the final sent Kerry on their way.

1984: After a five-year gap, the sides met again in the ’84 final. Dublin were

the reigning champions but a monster point by Eoin ‘Bomber’ Liston clinched it for The Kingdom.

1985: Timmy O’Dowd’s aesthetically pleasing goal was crucial as Kerry retained their title with a four-point win over Dublin in the decider.

2001: An incredible equaliser from a sideline kick by Maurice Fitzgerald snatched a draw in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Thurles.

2001: Glenflesk star Johnny Crowley bagged two goals in the replay. The second opened up an unassailable nine-point lead.

2004: When Colm Cooper hit the post, Dara Ó Cinnéide pounced to finish off the rebound as Kerry once again saw off Dublin at the quarter-final stage.

2007: A tidy turn and finish by Man of the Match Declan O’Sullivan proved to be the difference in this semi-final. Kerry won by 1-15 to 0-16.

2009: Mike McCarthy teed up Colm Cooper just 40 seconds into this quarter-final and the legendary corner forward made no mistake from close range. Dublin’s “startled earwigs” fell to a disheartening 17-point loss.

2011: Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton clinched his county’s first All-Ireland in 16 years with a last-minute free.

2013: A lucky Kevin McMenamon goal gave the Dubs an unexpected and insurmountable lead late on in the 2013 semi-final.

2015: Dublin pulled away in this final, thanks in part to a late, left-footed point by Alan Brogan.

2016: A beauty by Diarmuid Connolly was the insurance point in this semi-final as the Dubs ran out 0-22 to 2-14 winners.

2019: A 74th-minute leveller by Dean Rock sent the final to a replay.

2019: A goal directly from the second-half throw-in by marauding defender Eoin Murchan was the turning point as Dublin secured the first ever five-in-a-row.

2022: Kerry claimed their first victory over Dublin since 2009 when Seánie O’Shea pointed a long-range free with the last act of this semi-final. Jack O’Connor’s men went to on win their first All-Ireland in eight years. Who will write their name into the history books on Sunday?

Former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald reckons that the Dubs will be out for revenge following last year’s semi-final

It’s the final everyone wished for, with apologies to the courageous efforts of Monaghan and Derry. It will be Kerry v Dublin in the 2023 All-Ireland final at Croke Park on Sunday with a full capacity of 82,000.

Will Kerry hold on to Sam, won so dramatically last July? Or will the Dubs, stung by that late Seánie O’Shea scud missile right into the teeth of the Hill, get their revenge?

The best two teams have reached the final, as happened with the hurling final on Sunday last. Kilkenny tried for as long as they could to break the Limerick stranglehold but the Shannonsiders

went into top gear in the third quarter and no team, not even Kilkenny, could stem the flow. In fact, it was more like a raging torrent. Limerick were magnificent and well deserving of the four-ina-row.

Can Kerry win back-to-back titles and, more pertinently, will they?

Here is my view. Kerry have a lot going for them. They are All-Ireland champions, used to winning and winning is habitual. Much wants more. Not alone have they the best footballer in the country, but the best Kerry footballer of all time. That's the value I put on David Clifford and if the Aussies had their way

when he was a minor he would now be a wealthy man in the Australian game. Manchester United would also have loved him. Yes, he is that good, simply the best. How will Dublin cope with him?

I have always rated this team as a good Kerry team but not a great one. Jack and his management team did very well to get an All-Ireland with this squad. Functional to the last, winning despite limitations.

Shane Ryan has been magnificent and like Cluxton he knows that his prime duty is to mind the house and call his defence to order. Thankfully, both Ryan and Cluxton do that to perfection. Out to 30 metres and no more, not aping the mainly northern goalkeepers’ antics

of acting as an extra forward.

The only time you will see Cluxton and Ryan well out from goal is when they come up for a very long free, outside even the range of Seánie O’Shea.

The Kerry bench are all good players but nothing compares with what Dessie Farrell has at his disposal. There must be 30-plus All-Ireland medals on the bench. In the modern game of high intensity, the five subs sprung at crucial times is often the determining factor in the outcome. Dublin win this hands down.

Even more so Farrell has readymade options; he can slot subs in his strongest position. Not so Kerry. What happens if Kerry are hosed at midfield? What if Jack Barry doesn’t have

the Indian sign over Brian Fenton on Sunday? The immediate cover is limited to Barry Dan O’Sullivan. Or would Kerry rearrange the format using their top player and shifting around other players? The team has not been announced as this column is put to bed, but I expect the same starting 15 as went in against Derry. He may start O’Brien, or do you keep him on standby. Will he be first in? He was hugely influential in last year’s final and again versus Derry, more as a defensive wing forward using his trademark block down to plug the holes in the Kerry defence.

Luck is very important in any venture and I believe this is a very lucky team. They got some crucial refereeing decisions last year at crucial times. When Galway were right in the mix, Kerry got a very soft free, immediately punished with a great David Clifford point from the Cusack/Hill 16 area of the pitch.

In the recent semi-final another referee on another day would have deemed Shane Ryan’s use of his posterior to thunder through deserving of a card.

Dublin have six scoring forwards; Kerry don’t. In the semi-final, Seánie O’Shea and David Clifford did all the scoring with Paudie Clifford chipping in with a single point. None of the other starting three scored. I reiterate what I have written about so often in this column: you won’t win an All-Ireland with so many non-scorers.

I am not taking from the great 110% effort by the non-scorers who may have to sacrifice their own individual stats to fit into the Kerry plan.

Paudie hasn’t delivered the quality performance this year that gave him an All-Star in 2022. However, I have no fears about his ability to lift his game on Sunday. He has what it takes, but Dublin will have a plan to cut off his supply at source, stopping his darting runs prematurely before he gets up steam to run at the Dublin defence.

I believe that Kerry will go hard offensively at Dublin in the opening quarter, imposing their superiority, while balancing that with adequate defensive cover. You won’t see Tadhg Morley going on an upfield offensive sally, especially early on. He needs to mark his man and at the same time cover off the central spine so that no Dub careers through the middle unhindered.

Dublin have the pacy players to come off the shoulder, maximising turnovers. They are at their deadliest then and the goals will come especially with Con O’Callaghan, Paul Mannion

and, sharpest of all, Cormac Costello ready to pounce for a goal. Then a tight contest would end and you know the consequences of allowing the Dubs to dictate.

Motivation is very important for a winning side. Kerry have plenty of motivation. So, too, do the Dubs, with several of them bidding for their ninth All-Ireland medal. Even the heroes of Mick O’Dwyer’s Golden Years could only manage eight.

One other big factor in determining the result is how the players and management deal with the unexpected variables. There are several such as the referee's decisions, often made without the full facts because the umpires and linesmen ‘saw nothing and heard nothing’.

Is it a penalty, a 13-metre free or a free out? Was that tackle deliberate or accidental? Is the player on the ground genuinely hurt or should he really have been better suited to the Broadway stage? Is the sinner more sinned against than the ref realises?

Much has been made of the appointment of David Gough, a Meath teacher living and working in Dublin. Bias? I

don’t think so. He is the top referee in the country, but even he has too much to do with 82,000 pairs of eyes and cameras go leor to dispute his decisions.

As I said so often, the referee should have nothing whatsoever to do with time issues. Send a player to the bin for 10 minutes. How accurate is his count of 10? How does he deal with the delaying tactics of the 14-man team? How accurate is his judgement of time added on, with one team having those extra seconds for one last effort to equalise? Refereeing is an imprecise science for a human with all his frailties. Bring in the clock. I saw and heard the clock/hooter in operation in Gaelic Park, New York 50 years ago. It worked. No disputes. It works for the LGFA and basketball.

68 years ago the no-hopers of the culchie Kerry team, then traditional catch and kick practitioners, were supposed to be humiliated by the sophisticated Dublin machine of Freaney, the Foleys and Heffo. ‘Don’t bother coming up’ was the advice of Kerry people living in Dublin.

A young, nifty, intelligent corner forward also shone until he got injured. He went on to win four more All-Irelands as a top class goalkeeper. That’s the regular chat this week. Try all sources and get sorted before arriving you arrive at the front of the Gresham Hotel. Anyone buying or selling a ticket? That’s the chant of the chancers. Ignore them with their inflated prices and exorbitant charges.

Call it. Bookies say Kerry are 10/11. The heart says Kerry, the head says Dublin -marginally - because they want revenge. They also ant to form the Niners Club and they have so many top players listed in the subs.

Kerry will give it everything, but the Dubs are far more potent on the bench.

Kerry captain dealt cruel injury blow

The captain of the Kerry ladies, Síofra O’Shea, has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a ruptured ACL.

The Southern Gaels star had been in excellent form in 2023, scoring ten goals in 12 appearances as Kerry claimed the National League Division 1 title and successfully navigated their path to the All-Ireland semi-final.

Unfortunately, O’Shea will now miss that last four clash against Mayo, which takes place on Saturday in Semple Stadium, Thurles. This is her second ACL injury in three seasons.

The 21-year-old will be a huge loss to The Kingdom this weekend but her teammates will no doubt be keen to win this one for their unlucky comrade. Kerry have been the form team this year and their quarter-final victory

over two-time champions Meath a fortnight ago underlined their status as championship favourites. Encouragingly, Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s defeated their upcoming opponents in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, and they also got the better of the Connacht women in the league this past January.

Key players like Kayleigh Cronin, Cáit Lynch and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh have been moving well of late and they will need to be even better in O’Shea’s absence.

Kerry’s Munster rivals Cork take on Dublin in the other All-Ireland semi-final at the same venue on Saturday. Kerry v Mayo gets underway at 5pm, with Cork v Dublin starting at 7.30pm. If you are unable to travel, both matches will be shown live on TG4.

Kerry FC draw Drogheda in FAI Cup

Kerry FC will play League of Ireland Premier Division opposition for the first time when they welcome Drogheda United to Mounthawk Park in the second round of the FAI Cup. The match will take place the weekend of August 1820.

Kerry put their name in the hat for Round 2 by beating Munster Senior League outfit Ringmahon Rangers at home on Friday night. Another fine strike by Killarney man Ryan Kelliher gave the hosts the lead late on and Kelliher pounced again with seven minutes to go to put the result beyond doubt.

The outcome is a historic one for the club as it marks their first ever win at home.

Next up for Billy Dennehy’s team is

a home league match against Finn Harps. The Donegal side are second from bottom in the First Division, 19 points ahead of Kerry.

The boys in green will be hoping to carry the momentum from their cup victory into tonight’s match and secure their first home league win of their maiden season.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: The opening round of fixtures have been released in the Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Championship. Farranfore will be the venue on Sunday August 13th for our clash with Currow. 2pm is the designated throw in time. The other game in our game, Kilcummin against Laune Rangers will take place in Beaufort on Saturday August 5th.

LADIES UPDATE: The U10 Girls hosted our neighbours Dr Crokes in Direen, and some lovely football was played, aided no doubt by the excellent refereeing of Leah O’Grady and Grace Cox, two of our U16 players. Our Legion U12 Girls White team visited Listowel Emmets on Tuesday last and put in a good performance on a wet cold evening. From the get-go, we established a good grip on the game and stayed in control throughout the full game, albeit there were intervals where the focus dropped, and this allowed Emmets to put together some good passages of play. Our U14 girls made the trip to North Kerry during the week to play Brosna/Knocknagoshel in Division 3 of the County league. The girls came away with a well-deserved victory on a score line of 2-13 to 1-7. They put in a huge effort over the hour but only led by one point at half time due to some wayward shooting. The defence was outstanding throughout, but we were far more clinical in front of goals in the second half. Well done to all the girls and a big thank you to Brosna/Knocknagoshel for a very competitive & sporting game. Churchill visited Direen on a damp Sunday evening but adapted much better to the conditions, eventually running our 5-7 to 2-6 victors. We await the results of the remaining games to be played to see if the team will advance to the semi-final stage. The U16 ladies completed their Co League group games at home last night to Duagh/Moyvane. Short of a number of regulars due to holidays it was a night the full panel came to the fore. Playing with the breeze in the first half, our girls took control early dominating possession,

but scores were not as freely obtained as we would hope. The score was 0-08 to 0-01 at half time in our favour. We expected a bounce by the opposition in the 2nd half, and it duly came mid-way through the half when they scored 2 quick goals, one from the penalty spot. With the lead now only at 4 pts, we came straight back up the field and scored our own goal to give us a bit more comfort. We finished stronger and won the game 2-13 to 2-04. The team remains unbeaten with a 100% record to date and secured a home semi-final in two weeks' time when the serious business starts. It was a night where we were very thankful for our panel strength, including some U14s who provided cover for the team.

FITZGERALDS STADIUM: The U11 Boys had the experience of playing in the Cathedral of Kerry Football when they participated in a Munster GAA Blitz last Wednesday. An exciting and fulfilling experience no doubt to be playing in the arena that has seen the greats of Kerry football. No doubt the lads soaked it all in.

BRITISH OPEN GOLF FUNDRAISER: A big thank you to everyone who helped make our British Open Golf Fundraiser such an enjoyable and successful event. And while on the course Brian Harman made sure it was only a matter of formality, all the drama was confined to our leaderboard. Darragh O’Doherty courtesy of late birdies by John Rahm and Victor Hovland came with a late surge to deny Chris Flannery, who was left to rue Tommy Fleetwood’s late mistakes. The Moriarty’s, Tom and Alan, and Emma Murphy kept the outcome in doubt right up to the final stroke.

U11: Well done to our U11 boys who took part in a Munster blitz in the Fitzgerald Stadium last week. We played games against An Gaeltacht, Listry and Donoughmore from Cork. The boys were then treated to a tour of the changing rooms and warm up area from last year’s Kerry captain Joe O’Connor. Thanks to our own Pat O’Shea and Joey Carton from Munster GAA and to Donal Daly and Mike Quirke from Kerry GAA for organising the event.

U11 HURLERS: Well done to our U11 hurlers who hosted Newport from Tipperary in a challenge game last week. It was a great evening of hurling, and it was great to host everyone for pizza in the clubhouse afterwards.

U12 LGFA: Our U12s were at home to Moyvane in the County League on Wednesday last. Short of numbers due to holidays etc we had to dig deep. We gave a great display in a cracking game to come out on top 6:10 to 6:08. Every girl played their part in this thriller. We are delighted with the progress this squad is making.

FLESK FEST: After months of meticulous planning by the brilliant committee The Flesk Fest took place last weekend. The event was a complete success, the support shown was phenomenal with crowds attending each evening from far and near, young and not so young all-in high spirits enjoying themselves. U11 BOYS: Last Wednesday, our U-11 boys travelled in large numbers to take part in the Munster Under 11 Blitz in a sun-soaked Fitzgerald Stadium. We played three competitive games against Rathmore, Shannon Gaels (Clare) and Listowel Emmets. When the games were over, we were then treated to a Stadium Tour by Kerry's 2022 winning captain Joe O’Connor, who was very generous with his time and had a word for each and every player. Thanks also to Pat O'Shea, Donal Daly and all the team in Munster GAA for organising such a wonderful event, which is always a highlight for our U-11 players. Killarney Valley AC

OLYMPICS: Oisin Lynch from Killarney Valley ac and representing Ireland, at the European youth Olympics has finished in a 11th place overall, in the 800m on the track. Just barely missing a place in the final and running a superb semi-final in a swift 1.54, he can be very proud of himself. The young athlete would have preferred a faster first 400m getting Lynch closer to his PB, which would have secured him a final spot. Accompanied on the trip to Slovenia were his proud parents Martina and Con who is also the distance coach, at Killarney valley ac. As this is almost the end of the current track season, Oisin may look for an end of season race possibly over 1500m. It is certain that the Killarney valley ac track star will break the four-minute mile barrier in the next few seasons if not before then. Keep an eye on this young sportsman as he will gain more international caps into the future and podium finishes. Currently a number of colleges in the USA are keeping track of his progress.

Muckross Rowing Club

HOME INTERNATIONAL REGATTA: Congratulations and well done to Muckross rowers Daniel Daly and Caoimhe O’Sullivan, who represented Ireland last Saturday at the Home International Regatta. The event is the ‘Triple Crown’ of rowing and this year, Ireland played host to the visiting crews from England, Scotland and Wales. For the first time, the event was held at the Lough Rynn regatta course in Leitrim. The Irish crews put in a solid performance with Daniel racing to silver in both the Men’s Junior Double and Quad events with a third-place finish in his final sprint event. Caoimhe raced to second place in the Women’s Coxless Four with a third-place finish in the Senior Eight and fourth place finish in the sprint. A great achievement for both Daniel and

Caoimhe who did their families and all in Muckross very proud.

PORTMAGEE COASTAL: Closer to home, the club contested its first coastal event for 2023 at the Portmagee Regatta in Ballinskelligs. On Saturday, the club was the winner in the Men’s J16 Quad race and second in the Mixed J16 Double. On Sunday, the club competed for the first time in a Beach Sprint event. While outside the podium spots, our crews had an enjoyable experience in the newest branch of competitive rowing. Our Mixed Quad crew had the second fastest time to the winning composite crew featuring Olympians Monika Dukarska and Ronan Byrne, who will be bidding for success at the World Beach Sprints in Italy. Well done all!

Killarney Judo Club

CONGRATULATIONS to Cora Joy who recently competed in the European University Judo Championship in Croatia last weekend. Cora fought very well throughout the competition across competitors from Hungary, France and Poland before being eliminated. It was a fantastic experience, and we are all very proud of her.

Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club

CONDOLENCES: While club activities are on a summer slowdown at present, we would like to acknowledge the recent passing of Maureen Buckley of St. Brendan's Terrace. Maureen was a great supporter of the club and was a regular presence at club social outings and award dinners. We would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to her family who, having their mother and fathers’ guidance, are steeped in angling tradition in Killarney and active in its pursuit and longevity. May she rest in peace.

DINNER: As the summer days are moving on, we would also like to advise members and their families that our annual dinner will be taking place in the East Avenue Hotel on Saturday night the 21st of October. Following on from an enforce break from this social gathering over the past few years owing to regulations at the

time, the event recommenced again last October and was a great night -hopefully it will go from strength to strength as it re-establishes itself on the calendar.

BOG WALKS: Details of these walks which are rich in a variety of flora & fauna, are in the “Kilcummin Walks” brochures (free of charge) which are available at the Rural Development Office and the Post Office. Why not pick one up and it may inspire you to discover this beautiful amenity which is enjoyed by many already. Please be mindful of keeping this a clean, safe and friendly place to enjoy by bringing your rubbish home, keeping your dog(s) on a lead when you come in contact with fellow walkers or wildlife and respecting the local landowners’ property.
