Chicago wheat led the way higher, surging against Kansas City and Minneapolis as it followed corn higher. Corn and soybeans both saw higher prices as dry weather settled into the eastern Midwest, threatening already stressed crops. Grain markets are also anticipating a very important supply/demand report on August 12 that will include an update on planted/failed acres for corn and soybeans, a huge unknown so far this year. The cattle complex was mixed with live cattle holding steady and feeders slightly weaker. Both markets put in major reversal up early this week, but have since failed to continue the rally, instead consolidating in a sideways pattern. The market is anticipating that August placements will above average this year as good pasture conditions kept cattle on grass through July, delaying movement into feedlots out to August. Cash prices were slightly lower this week, but boxed beef managed to push slightly higher, suggesting packers are regaining some leverage in the market. Energies and the Dow were lower with volatile price action. The deteriorating US/China trade relations is spreading fear of further slowing global economic activity as more indicators suggest recession is coming. A weaker Chinese currency also fanned fears of a currency war, which prompted investors to safe havens of precious metals and treasuries. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. 6 Cleaning Home Remedies That Actually Work Modern advances in home technology are great (who doesn’t love their dishwasher?), but when it comes to cleaning, good old-fashioned home remedies still get the job done! In fact, you can get a ton of household tasks accomplished with common items like baking soda and lemons. Next time you go on a cleaning frenzy, hearken back to your grandma’s wisdom and give one of these home remedies a shot. 1. Disinfect your toilet with denture tablets. For a no-fuss bacteria banisher, drop a couple of denture-cleaning tablets into your toilet bowl and flush. While it won’t get rid of stains, it will rid your toilet of dangerous bacteria. 2. Erase a bathtub ring with baking soda. If your DIY bath bombs created a ring around your tub, erase it with a box of baking soda. Simply sprinkle baking soda on the ring and let it sit for up to an hour. When you rinse it away with water, the nasty ring will be rinsed away with it! 3. Use coffee filters to wash windows. Coffee filters are great for cleaning windows because they leave a streak- and lint-free shine. Plus, this inexpensive option won’t leave residue on your hands like newspaper does. Bonus: They work on mirrors, too!

For the past two weeks, we hosted a guest from Florida. During JJ’s visit, she and Chelsie camped on the top of the Big Horns, took a speed trip through Yellowstone and Glacier plus caught the rodeo in Cody. Flatlanders visiting Big Sky Country are always entertaining. For the second night in a row, an electrical storm struck western Yellowstone County. Tuesday’s was a real boomer and a nearby flash-bang shot me out of bed to the window to scan the north hills for a grass fire. Seeing nothing, I crawled back in bed but before I drifted off the trophy wife mumbled, “There is a firetruck bouncing up our driveway with its lights on.” Thinking there was a fire, I jumped into my boots, grabbed my headlamp and headed for the door. Chelsie and JJ were already in the driveway visiting with the fire chief as I trotted into the front yard. Before I reached them, they returned to the house chuckling and told me the rest of the story. Our guestrom overlooks the CHS Refinery. Laurel natives pay little notice to the refinery flare as it varies every day. Tuesday nights was a dandy. JJ suddenly noticed the refinery flare for the first time and viewing the flame through the cottonwood trees, she suspected lightning had sparked a fire. Her eight-year-old daughter confirmed she had seen lightning hit the trees. Rather than disturb me, JJ called the fire department prompting the lights and sirens which filled my driveway. Answer me this: Did the electrical storm cause the flare at the refinery? No, it was coincidence, not causative. Do you follow? Just as the lightning storm’s relationship to the refinery flare is coincidental, so is man’s carbon emissions to climate change. If you are a snowflake or buttercup who believes capitalism, resource development and economic expansion affect the climate and therefore are causing global warming, cooling, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, blizzards and bacterial antibiotic resistance, you have swallowed a lie. Please ask the nearest person to slap some sense in you. Don’t worry, I’ll wait…did that help? Now to the truth. Ed Berry, PhD published an article in the July 4th edition of the International Journal of Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences and using logic, physics and mathematics he completely disproves the UNIPCC theory on climate change. You can read it at www. edberry.com if you care to learn something or you can continue mindlessly regurgitating socialist climate crisis propaganda. Be ignorant or informed, it is your choice.

4. Use ice to remove wax from carpet. If your candles have melted right down to your carpet, Havre Holiday Village Mall 1753 Hwy 2 NW - Ste 8 start the clean-up process with ice. First, fill a plastic bag (406) 399-6522 Havre, MT bigskyimages.com with ice and lay it on top of the wax stain. Let the bag sit until you’re sure the wax is frozen. Then, scrape off the For Sale By Owner: Buildings wax with a dull knife (a butter knife will work well). 5. Clean copper with lemon and salt. If you’re a Moscow Mule fan, your copper mugs probably need a quick shine every once in a while. Just grab a lemon and some salt. Microwave your lemon for ten seconds, and then cut it in half. Dip the juicy side of the lemon into the salt, then vigorously rub your copper. The stains will disappear and your copper will shine like a new penny! 6. Shine your silver with banana peels. If you have tarnished silver, look no further than your fruit bowl to shine it up. First, blend a banana peel with water until it forms a paste. Rub the paste onto your silver with a soft cloth and then rinse your silverware thoroughly. Be sure to dry your silverware before putting it back into a drawer, or you’ll be stuck with moldy silver. www.huffpost.com/entry/6-home-cleaning-remedies

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

Discover the Adventure You’re Meant to Live! Whose life are you living? Is it the life you really believe God wants you to live—the life you’re truly meant to live—or the one that someone else has designed for you? It’s so important for us to ask ourselves these questions and honestly search our hearts. Because if we’re not following the leadership of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we’re going to be unhappy, frustrated people who are just making it through the day. And that is not God’s plan for us! I used to be a miserable Christian, and I’ve met a lot of cranky Christians. I’ve discovered that many times the problem is we aren’t willing to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit and do what God wants us to do. We’re more concerned with pleasing people and being accepted by everybody else, so we get caught up just doing what we believe others are expecting of us. The truth is living a life of adventure is all about discovering God’s purpose and plan, doing what HE puts in your heart to do. And that takes courage and faith. Dare to Be Different! When you’re really ready to tell God, “I want to follow You!” He’ll start pulling you out of your comfort zone and the “boxes” you’ve been living in. And when you start making changes, some people won’t like it. But your life won’t change if you’re not willing to change. I remember a time when I was so confused about who I was supposed to be, and I was more concerned about living up to other people’s expectations rather than God’s. I tried to be like my pastor’s wife; she was so sweet, mild and submissive to her husband. I tried to be like Dave, who never worried about anything. And I tried to be more like my neighbor, who was good at sewing and gardening. So I made clothes for my family, but they couldn’t wear them. I also planted a garden so I could raise and can tomatoes, but the night before we were going to pick them, these big black bugs came and ate holes in them. Once I made a determined decision to follow God’s plan for my life and stop comparing myself to others, I began to discover who He created me to be and His purpose for me. I was so scared when He called me to the ministry I’m doing today. I lost some friends, was asked to leave my church, and faced opposition from people who didn’t believe women should teach God’s Word. I remember praying, “God, I can’t do this because I’m a woman!” He spoke to my heart, saying, “You don’t think I know that?” And I knew it was time to break free from fear and take a step of faith. Confidence Is Key There is no life of adventure unless we’re confident, but I’m not talking about being self-confident. Philippians 3:3 says, “For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh” (NIV). The apostle Paul is saying here that true believers in Christ put their trust in God and rely on His Spirit to guide them and empower them in every area of life. They “put no confidence in the flesh,” or their own strength and ability. This is so critical because the fear of failure and what others think is crippling people from reaching their God-given destinies. But when we know who we are in Christ and how much God loves us, we can have confidence to live by faith and break free from fear. We can step out and find out if something we believe we should do is actually God’s plan. And if it doesn’t work out, we can say, “I thought it was God, but it wasn’t. It didn’t work out so I’m going to try something else.” That’s how we learn to hear His voice in our hearts. I’ve made mistakes in my journey, of course, and I’ve discovered that it’s not the end of the world. It’s actually helped me learn how to discern when the Holy Spirit is speaking to my heart with greater confidence. And that’s the key to having the courage to live with bold faith in Christ so I can experience the adventure He has for me. Ask God to show you the desires in your heart that He’s given to you and what His plan is for you. Study His Word and get as close to Jesus as you can possibly be. Put your confidence in Him and take steps of faith as He leads. God loves you, and He wants you to experience the life He’s created you to live! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Abundance of Deer Prompts Increase in Quotas, Many Licenses are Available in Surplus Are you looking for more hunting opportunity this year? Due to the abundance of both mule deer and white-tailed deer, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 6 biologists elected to increase antlerless quotas in many of the hunting districts (HDs) in Region 6. Every two years, FWP considers changes to all hunting seasons, proposes changes from the previous biennium, and encourages public comment before the Fish and Wildlife Commission makes its final decisions. Part of this process includes setting the license quota ranges for species in their respective HDs for the following two hunting seasons. All HD’s have different quota ranges and those ranges must be commission approved. Within those commission-approved ranges, biologists can adjust the quotas annually before the license drawing. For instance, in HD 670 north of Glasgow, 600 licenses were “listed” as available through the drawing in the 2019 hunting regulations for antlerless mule deer. However, prior to the drawing in July, the area biologist proposed to increase the quota to 1,000 licenses. “The ability to adjust the hunting district quotas after spring surveys allows biologists to closely track what the population trend is showing on an annual basis,” said Ryan Williamson, Outlook-area biologist. “This allows us to lower quotas if we come out of a bad winter or increase quotas if we have above average reproduction…instead of waiting every two years to respond.” In region 6, the following license changes took place: Mule deer: 600-01 from 400 to 600 licenses 611-01 from 300 to 500 licenses 620-00 from 300 to 500 licenses 640-00 from 400 to 800 licenses 641-01 from 100 to 200 licenses 650-00 from 300 to 400 licenses 651-00 from 200 to 400 licenses

Up to seven antlerless deer licenses can be held during the license year in any For Sale: 2007 Vermeer BP 8000 combination, including licenses that were acquired through bale processor, $10,000. A full list of available surplus licenses can be found on the fwp.gov website through a link on the home page. In addition, due to the detection of CWD north of Hwy 2, FWP encourages hunters to get deer tested for CWD if they came from any district in the CWD Management Zone, which includes all HDs north of Hwy 2 in Region 6 and other HDs in other areas of the state. To prevent the spread of CWD from areas in Montana known to be infected, which is any CWD Management Zone, the whole carcass, whole head, brain or spinal column from any deer, elk or moose harvested within a CWD Management zone may not be removed from that Management Zone. Instead, hunters must quarter or “bone out” their deer prior to leaving the management zone. Please refer to page four in the 2019 deer, elk, and antelope hunting regulations for more information. -FWP-

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college. Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this? -Jeanette DEAR JEANETTE, So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor! Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke— fraudulently—to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous! I hope I wasn’t unclear. -Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 13 million listeners each week on 585 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey.

Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com

The 3 Secrets For Increasing Profit™ There are three, and only three, ways to increase profit in any business. Stan Parsons called them The 3 Secrets For Increasing Profit™ and introduced them to Ranching For Profit students in 1980. Lately I’ve seen more and more articles by industry pundits that incorporate the 3 secrets in articles and conference proceedings. They rarely if ever acknowledge the source. Worse yet, they don’t always get them right. I’m going to use this ProfitTips to go back to basics and explain the 3 Secrets. There is a common belief that profit is a function of weather and prices PERIOD. But weather and prices are, for the most part, beyond our control. If we believe that profit is determined by things beyond our control, it becomes easy to see ourselves as helpless victims. In Ranching For Profit we don’t accept for one moment that we are helpless. Even if we can’t influence the market or make it rain, we can create and structure enterprises to fit this uncertain and volatile environment. In selecting our enterprises and building our business for profit we need to understand the 3 Secrets: Reduce overhead costs Improve the gross margin per unit Increase turnover Secret #1: Reducing Overhead Costs Overhead costs include land and labor costs. Land and labor are broad categories. Land includes rent and the cost of maintaining fences, pipelines, building and anything else attached to the land. Labor costs include salaries & benefits, vehicles, equipment, horses, dogs and anything else that does work. Overhead costs tend not to change much as the units of production (e.g. cows, steers, ewes) change. Think about increasing a cow herd from 400 to 500 cows. That’s an increase of 25%. Would the interest, insurance or depreciation on our pickup increase by 25%? Of course not. As much as our hired hand might want a 25% raise, raising 500 cows is not 25% more work than raising 400 cows. Sorry Charlie, no raise. Of course, anyone with a BLM or Forest Service grazing permit pays for land on a per-head basis. It doesn’t matter. While it may not behave like other overheads, rent is always an overhead. The video at the end of this article explains why. Reducing depreciation on our truck, or refinancing it to pay less interest will not impact the number of cows we run, the productivity of those cows or the price I get for my calves. But it will increase our profit. That’s why reducing overheads is the first secret. Secret #2: Improving Gross Margin per Unit Gross margin per unit measures the economic efficiency of cows, steers, sheep or whatever our units are. The higher the gross margin, the greater the efficiency. When gross margin per unit increases it means that each animal makes a bigger contribution to covering our overheads and making a profit. To calculate gross margin we have to know two things; gross product and direct costs. Gross product is the value an enterprise produces. It’s simple to calculate: Gross Product = (Closing Inventory Value + Sales) – (Opening Inventory Value + Purchases) Direct costs are costs that go up and down as the number of animals in the herd goes up and down. Direct costs include supplement and substitute feed, health and breeding related costs, trucking, marketing commissions and interest on the livestock note. To calculate gross margin just subtract direct costs from gross product. Then we divide by the number of units in the enterprise to figure gross margin per unit. We can use different units. In livestock enterprises we usually start by calculating gross margin per animal unit. Gross margin per animal unit is an effective way to compare the efficiency of a stocker enterprise to a cow-calf enterprise, or any other livestock enterprise. Gross margin per acre is a useful tool for comparing the efficiency of grazing enterprises to farming operations. The ranch with the highest production per unit rarely has the best gross margin/ unit. Smaller cows weaning lighter calves, but requiring fewer inputs, generally have a much higher gross margin per unit than larger cows. Whatever the enterprise, improving gross margin per unit is the second secret to increasing profit. Secret # 3: Increasing Turnover We may have a productive cow with a great gross margin, but one cow won’t be enough to cover our overheads. We need more cows … at least we need more something! Turnover refers to the number of units in an enterprise (e.g. the number of cows or steers that we have). A business can increase turnover by increasing the scale of an enterprise or by adding enterprises. Increasing turnover, provided that the gross margin per unit is healthy, is the third secret for increasing profit. There are three, and only three ways to increase profit in your business. All three are in play in your business all the time, but only one of them is the most important right now. Do you know which of the three secrets is your biggest problem and which offers you the greatest opportunity? If you are ranching for profit you’d better find out!
