USDA Farm Service Agency encourages all farmers, ranchers, and FSA program participants to take part in the county committee election nomination process.

Committees are comprised of locally elected agricultural producers responsible for the fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs in their counties. Committee members are accountable to the Secretary of Agriculture. If elected, members become part of a local decision making and farm program delivery process.

A county committee is comprised of three to 11 elected members from local administrative areas (LAA). Each member serves a three-year term. Onethird of the seats on these committees are open for election each year. County committees may have an appointed advisor to further represent the local interests of underserved farmers and ranchers. Underserved producers are beginning, women and other minority farmers and ranchers and land owners and/or operators who have limited resources. Other minority groups including Native American and Alaska Natives; persons under the poverty level, and persons that have disabilities are also considered underserved.

The nomination period opens June 15. All nomination forms for the 2018 election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA service center

by Aug. 1, 2018. County committee election ballots will be mailed to eligible voters on Nov. 5, 2018. The last day to return completed ballots to FSA is Dec. 3, 2018.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

We get a cross-section of livestock producers at the Ranching For Profit School. In 2011 we had outfits with more than 10,000 cows and others with less than 100 attend the course. When it comes to enterprise selection and structure, most of the small places look like miniature versions of the large ones. That’s a problem because size matters and what works for the large scale producers isn’t always a good idea for folks working at a smaller scale. One size doesn’t fit all.

One of the things limited-scale producers should challenge is their replacement strategy. Like most of their bigger neighbors, most small scale producers assume they should raise their own replacements. Assuming that a cow/calf enterprise is best suited to their situation (a dangerous assumption), most small scale producers are well advised not to raise their own replacements. The gross margin per unit of heifer enterprises is usually significantly lower than the margin per unit in the cow herd they support. When capacity is limiting, it is hard to economically justify having an enterprise with a relatively low gross margin. Of course, if you don’t know your enterprise gross margins, decisions regarding enterprise mix and structure can only be based on guesswork and emotion.

Some argue that they have special genetics. This claim is similar to the1 of 2 results of a recent survey in which 90% of American drivers felt they had above average driving skills. By definition at least 40% of them are wrong.

I’ve been told by geneticists that producers with fewer than 400 cows simply don’t have a large enough of a genetic pool to select from to claim an outstanding breeding program. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible to raise quality cattle on a limited scale, but the deck is stacked against it.

There are economic realities every business must face. We must keep overheads low, the margin per unit high and recognize that size matters.

If we are limited by scale, a limitation that is usually self-imposed, trying to produce profit by copying the business model of larger scale neighbors rarely works. One size does not fit all.

Sounds on the Square to Feature Montana Bands This Summer Sounds on the Square, a free summer concert series, continues on June 20 with the Latigo Band whose members are from both Harlem and Malta, Montana. These concerts will recur each Wednesday through August 16, at the Town Square, 332 First Street in Havre, Montana, and feature various local musicians.

Hosted by the Havre Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by NorthWestern Energy, along with Triangle Communications, and Triangle Mobile, Sounds on the Square music will start at 6:00 PM and continue to 8:00 PM, weather permitting.

The Latigo Band is a country, country-rock, 50's- 60's rock group featuring Steve Warburton on lead guitar, pedal steel, and vocals; Mike Yakos on bass and vocals; Cindy Henderson on drums and vocals; Neil Hamilton on lead and vocals; and Colie Hamilton also on lead and vocals. Band members name George Strait, Merle Haggard, and Alan Jackson as their key influences.

June 27 will feature Tales from Ghost Town. Nick Hagan, whose current location is Bozeman, Montana, has been called punkabillly, gothic country, cowpunk, punk blues, Montana blues, soul punk, folkabillly, punk grass, and street folk, but the one-man acoustic band claims that no single label is capable of capturing his style of music.

Hailing originally from Montrose, Colorado, Hagan’s first tapes began circulating sometime in 2005. Recorded on a four-track to cassette, the selftitled "Tales from Ghost Town" was released on Sxratch Native Music and Insurrection Records in his hometown. In 2010, as Tales from Ghost Town, Hagan embarked on his first tour to promote his "Greyhound Bus Stop" E.P. (Sxratch Native Records, 2010), visiting venues around Montana and Idaho by hitch-hiking and hopping freight trains.

On July 11, the Square will play host to a country and classic rock band from Havre, Plowed Under. Comprised of Justin Kallenberger, Joe Lamphier, Rob Everingham, Lena Lamphier, and TJ Overcast, Plowed Under has shared the stage with Dirty Shame, Mark Wills, Mark Chestnut, the Bellamy Brothers, and many other musicians at the Headwaters Country Jam, which they played for three years in Three Forks, Montana. Plowed Under, a mix of life-long country and rock musicians who consolidated their talents to put their twist on classic and new country hits, invite area residents to join them on the Square to “get loud and get Plowed!”

Sounds on the Square on July 18 will emanate from the ROC Band, when musicians from both Chinook and Havre—Roger Fischer, Brad Taylor, Elaine Campbell, and Pat Campbell—will share their brand of Really Old Country.

The following Wednesday, July 25, will feature the Milk River Band and their country and country/rock style. Band members include Val Barnettrhythm and vocals, Auddo Flansburg- lead and vocals, Brady Skramstad- bass and vocals, Chancin Solomon– drums, and honorary member, Brent Skramstadlead and vocals. They consider themselves “just a group of friends that have the privilege of hanging out together and playing some music.”

The Havre Chamber of Commerce invites area residents to join friends, neighbors, and family at the Square to enjoy these talented area musicians.

Founded in November 1909, the Havre Chamber of Commerce holds their mission to be “the promotion of Havre and its businesses through effective advertising, planned events, community service, networking and education of the public.”

At the same time, I don’t think you should lose one wink of sleep over this if you decide not to contribute.

Twenty-five years is long, long time. I don’t know your dad, and I have no clue about his situation or state of mind back then and in the time since. I can’t imagine doing that to a child of any age, though.

Do what you feel in your heart is best. But in my opinion, there’s no obligation here.

Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is paying off all consumer debt, from smallest to largest, using the debt snowball. Baby Step 3 is where you increase your emergency fund to the point where you have three to six months of expenses set aside.

Once you’ve done all that you can begin saving for a home. I’ll call it Baby Step 3b. For folks looking to buy a house, I advise saving enough money for a down payment of at least 20 percent. I don’t beat people up over mortgage debt, but I do advise them to get a 15-year, fixed rate loan, where the payments are no more than 25 percent of their monthly take-home pay.

Wheat markets were weaker, led by Minneapolis as plentiful rains fell across much of the northern plains and Canadian prairies, giving the young spring wheat crop a timely moisture boost. With higher planted acres and a good start to the growing season, production potential is high for the US spring wheat crop. Corn and soybeans were sharply lower, pressured by a new round of trade spats between the US and China, Canada and Mexico. Good rains are also falling across most of the major corn and soybean production areas, helping to create record high crop conditions to start the season.

Cattle markets were higher as cash prices held steady over the last few weeks, giving the discounted futures room to move higher. The market expected the bulk of the historically high slaughter numbers to be harvested by the end of the second quarter of the calendar year. Feedlots were aggressive in pulling cattle forward through April and May with record high basis and a discounted front month futures contract. Weights stayed lighter than normal as a result and beef production wasn’t as high as feared. The current heat wave in the southern plains is now stressing cattle, also reducing weight gains. Beef demand is clearly strong as packers have managed to keep boxed beef prices well supported despite higher slaughter numbers and beef production.

Energies took a hit primarily on Middle East threats of increasing oil production and from weakening demand due to the increasing trade riffs between major importing countries. The Dow was higher as the US economy steadily improves with employment at near record highs.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

Change of Seasons Mid-June is my favorite season because calving, branding, bull-testing, snow-plowing and planting seasons have all passed. Spring rains have made the hills vibrant green and irrigating season is weeks away. Life is as good as it gets but changing from winter to spring pales compared to the glorious exit from Montana’s most foul, detestable, disgusting season of all—primary season. Political primaries are nasty by nature so consider this: Hats off to any brave patriot willing to sacrifice their lives, fortunes and sacred honor by entering the political arena. It is not easy. This past election cycle saw four Montanans enter the GOP US Senate race; all highly qualified, educated and ambitious individuals you would enthusiastically welcome as your neighbor. The primary race primarily functions to identify which of these individuals would best honor their oath of office to support, protect and defend the Constitution. Sorting them was the question.

If the selection were made by height, weight or hair density, voters’ decision would have been easy. Instead, we were tasked to look beyond the packaging to discern how each candidate would perform under fire. Three of the subjects had legislative voting records which reveal their political soul.

The fourth did not and even though he was an accomplished combat veteran, his performance pushing the “Yeah” or “Nay” button remained uncertain.

Once elected, it is oh so easy to be charitable with other people’s money—offering sacrifices which cost elected officials nothing.

The remaining three shared very, very similar political beliefs, with my ultimate decision falling to a single issue. Montanans unwilling to dig into the candidate’s record defaulted into the great abys called the “undecided.”

Because these folks could sway the election, many candidates and independent committees launched attack ads. These messages are especially hurtful because they come from within our ranks; colleagues who value faith, family and freedom. The election dust settled on June 5th, 2018 and this brings me to my point.

Unlike the primary election, the canyon separating the ideologies of the GOP and Democrat Senate candidates is enormous. There should be no “undecided.” For the first time, Democrats are publicly embracing full Venezuelan socialism and gun control—positions I have railed against in this column for 12 years. I served two terms in Montana’s legislature with Matt Rosendale and readers who believe as I do will not be disappointed by his performance in Washington, D.C. Matt is a great American as were each of his opponents in the Montana’s recent GOP primary.

Shakespeare to Be Featured on the Hi-Line in June In its 46th season, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks (MSIP) will be coming to the Lewistown, Malta, and Wolf Point communities this June to perform Othello and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

MSIP, a nationally recognized outreach program of the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University, employs ten actors for a fifteen-week summer season that includes rehearsals and a multi-state tour in Montana, northern Wyoming, eastern Idaho, western North Dakota, and eastern Washington.

Two plays rehearse for five weeks starting in late May and then tour the region for a ten-week period ending in early September. With this schedule, MSIP provides professional, outdoor theatre productions of Shakespeare and other classics to communities, with an emphasis on underserved, rural areas.

Given that mission, on Tuesday, June 26, the Lewistown Art Center will sponsor MSIP at the Pine Meadows Golf Course, 320 Country Club Lane, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM when the acting troupe will present William Shakespeare’s comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost, directed by Steve Cardamone.

In this production, the comedy centers on four young men who fall in love against their wills. The play draws on themes of masculine love and desire, reckoning and rationalization, and reality versus fantasy. In case of inclement weather, the backup location will be Fergus High School.

Then, on Thursday, June 28, actors will present the tragedy of Othello, directed by Kevin Asselin and sponsored by The Shrew Crew. The show will begin at 6:30 at the Malta Courthouse Lawn, located on 314 South Second Avenue West.

The plot of Othello revolves around a secret marriage that leads to a daughter disowned. When Iago—a meddling lower-ranking officer who harbors resentment against Othello—concocts suspicions about Desdemona’s unfaithfulness, jealousy, rage, and ultimately murder ensue. If weather prevents an outdoor performance, the show will go on in the Malta High School Auditorium.

Othello will again take the stage on Saturday, June 30 in Faith Home Park at 320 Edgar Street in Wolf Point at 6:30 PM. Wolf Point High School Auditorium will serve as the venue in the event of bad weather.

Audience members are invited to bring a picnic or a blanket and enjoy a night of professional theatre under the Big Sky. As always, it’s FREE… every summer.

The #1 Key to Having Peace Peace is an amazing gift God offers us. I know what it’s like to live without peace – upset most of the time, anxious, fearful and worried. It’s miserable! Since I’ve discovered how to live with God’s peace, I will do anything I need to do to have it.

We have to understand the value of peace if we’re going to have it. Because if you think it’s really no big deal to lose your temper, worry, be stressed-out or upset all the time, you won’t do what you need to do to live with peace.

I think it’s interesting that one of the last things Jesus told His disciples before His crucifixion was about peace. John 14:27 (AMP) says, “Peace I leave with you; My [perfect] peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.

[Let My perfect peace calm you in every circumstance and give you courage and strength for every challenge.]”

In John 20:19, “Peace to you!” is the first thing Jesus said to His disciples after His resurrection. Verse 21 says, “Then Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace to you….’” Notice the word “again.” He must have wanted them to realize how important it was to maintain their peace.

Take a moment to think about how much peace you have. Do you worry, get upset or feel stressed-out often? Many people do…but that’s not the way God wants us to live.

A lot of Christians pray for God to give them peace, but they need to realize that as believers in Christ, they already have His peace. We need to pray for God to help us learn how to walk in peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 (AMP) says: “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].”

We can learn a lot about how to pray powerful, effective prayers by studying Scripture. Instead of praying for peace, notice that in Philippians the apostle Paul is encouraging believers to trust God in every circumstance so they can have His peace as they go through challenges.

If we don’t have peace and we want it, we have to be ready to make some changes. The world around us probably isn’t going to change, so we need to change our approach to life. We need to make a conscious decision to trust God in every area of our lives, every day.

We’re called believers, and that’s what we’re supposed to do: Believe God! When we trust Him, we enter His rest and can enjoy our lives.

Years ago, I remember when God helped me to learn this lesson as I studied James 4. In verses 1-4, we see what causes quarrels, strife and discontentment. Verse 2 (NLT) says, “You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.”

Wow! This is basically saying, “You want something, so you strive to get it your way or make it happen on your own, but it doesn’t work. If you would just ask Me, I would help you.” It’s important to point out here that God won’t just give us anything we ask for. He loves us and wants what’s best for us, and when we ask for things that are in His plan and purpose for us, He will give them to us.

I used to think I wanted a lot of things that ended up making me miserable after I managed to get them. But once I started giving up my will and asking God to do what He wants to do in my life, I experienced peace and contentment that I’d never known before.

It was so freeing for me to give up trying to run my own life and instead focus on seeking God and trusting Him to give me what He wants me to have. Psalm 37:4 (AMP) says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and petitions of your heart.”

I want to strongly encourage you today to purposely choose to seek God and delight yourself in Him before anyone or anything else in your life.

Even in FWP Region 6, Please Be Bear Aware Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks would like outdoor enthusiasts to be “Bear Aware,” even in northeast Montana. Although bear encounters are rare in most of FWP Region 6, black bears are occasionally seen in the Little Rockies and the Bears Paw Mountains.

Recently, one black bear was found near camping areas on the south end of Beaver Creek County Park in the Bears Paw mountains south of Havre.

Many times, bears are attracted to campground areas and homes due to the garbage produced and the availability of food. However, if bears are going to become a local wildlife species that we can all enjoy, we need to be smart about living with or near them. This includes preventing situations that habituate bears, such as rummaging through garbage and exposure to other unnatural food attractants.

It is unlawful to intentionally, or to inadvertently, feed bears. When bears access garbage and other food sources, they can become food-conditioned and potentially be dangerous. Once a bear is food-trained, it is often impossible to un-train the animal.

That truth explains why biologists so often say: “A fed bear is a dead bear.”

Wildlife officials often must euthanize food-conditioned bears in the interest of public safety, a situation that everyone wants to avoid. A much better option is to prevent bears from becoming habituated in the first place.

FWP reminds individuals who live or camp in areas where bears travel to always: • Secure garbage inside a garage, shed, or vehicle • Carry pet food in at night • Clean up livestock food • Bring in bird feeders and clean up spilled seed In addition, hunters and other recreationists are reminded to properly store game meat, food, livestock feed, garbage, and all other attractants in a bear-resistant manner. Proper storage also discourages other wildlife, such as raccoons and skunks, from causing problems with human belongings as well.

Many resources are available to hunters and recreationists seeking strategies to prevent bear interactions. Some of these can be found at the website: fwp.mt.gov/ fishAndWildlife/livingWithWildlife/beBearAware/.

Kayaking Sessions Offered in Saco The Malta Parks and Recreation Department is offering kayaking sessions for children and families at Nelson Reservoir State Park on June 25 and July 23 from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM—weather permitting—with instructor Stephanie Nagel in cooperation with BrightEyes Watercraft Rentals.

Prices for these sessions is $35.00 for one and $60.00 for both. If more than one family member signs up, a $5.00 discount will apply. The session price includes instruction, kayak rental, and a light dinner. Nagel explains that BrightEyes Watercraft Rentals will have ten single kayaks available and two tandem kayaks capable of holding up to three people, depending on weight and size. The tandem kayaks will rent for $50.00 per session. If a person brings his/her own kayak, the cost of a single session is $20.00. Nagel also reminds everyone that bringing a life jacket is essential and that any child nine years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Free camping is available at Nelson Reservoir State Park for those interested, and anyone attending is also invited to check out Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs, the only Hot Springs along Montana’s northern tier, located at 669 Buffalo Trail in Saco.

The source of Sleeping Buffalo’s hot water is a 3,200 foot-deep well that produces more than 900 gallons per minute of 108-degree water. All pools are cleaned nightly, refilled with natural hot springs water daily, and monitored for cleanliness and temperature and adjusted as necessary. The water, which flows through continuously, is natural and chemical-free.

Typically open daily from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs offers three natural hot springs pools, including a cold plunge and a dry sauna. Prices are $9.50 for ages 12 and up, $8.50 for age 5-11, and $5 for infant to age 4.

The Resort also has an RV Park with full hook-up sites as well as tent sites.

Prices are $34-$46 for full hook up per night and $24 per night for any tent.

The Management Team promises “true tranquility” as recreators spend the day relaxing in their main pool, hot tub, or sauna. The Resort can also accommodate birthday parties or special occasions in their poolside breezeway.
