The PPND “Newell’s Syndrome” Donation Drive results are in! As of December 31, 2009, nearly $2,400 in funds were raised for research to finding a cure for this dreadful and unique neurodegenerative disease that affects a number of Montana families. The Donation Drive began November 4, 2009 with an article published in “Tricia’s Trader” to bring awareness and education about Pallido-Pontal-Nigral Degeneration, and continued until December 31, 2009. The figure above represents the total funds donated by individuals across our reading area to one of two funds: one in Arizona maintained by a spouse of a PPND victim to help defray travel costs for medical research trips, and the other fund is the McLaughlin Research Institute in Great Falls, Montana. It is our understanding that Donations are still coming in. If you wish to donate at any time, the addresses are printed at right. For copies of the November 4th article, contact the publisher at 2000 Country Club Road, Turner, MT 59542 or call 406-3792377. And thank you for your support in finding a cure!

COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

Resolution Solution With the new year ringing in And with an iron constitution, Some have stepped up to the plate, They’ve made a resolution.

Not criticizing their intent, A line, it clearly draws, Yes, they began to exercise; It seems to be their jaws.

The things that they desire to change Just pop out of the cage It started with removal, December’s calendar page.

The pounds that they propose to shed, With that resolution toast, Temporarily put on hold, Or be offensive to their host.

Some are reaching for the page, With resolutions on their mind, Some with great sincerity, Some not well defined.

Here seems to be another, Perhaps she did postpone, Identify the fragrance, Is it ash tray cologne?

Proposed with great intensity, They vary in degrees, From figuring the angles, To making bold decrees.

He’ll analyze consumption, So his memory may not fade, For after last year’s party, He forgot the one he made….

Some proposed with loyalty With great intense desire, Others, quite diluted, But some folks do admire.

But it’s clear, that resolution, Although he did forget it, Just looking at the positive, He never would regret it….

Now, these party resolutions, That really can’t be missed, It’s just that their translations Give a somewhat different twist.

Please encourage resolutions, And though it’s not unique, Just inquire on their progress, ….Once or twice a week. Tricia’s Trader, © 2009 Fred Liese

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

Should I Convert to a roth Ira?

This is a perplexing question many investors are asking themselves in the wake of all the new tax laws. If the opportunity is available, should an individual take a distribution from an existing IRA and roll it over to a Roth IRA? A good question, but not so fast. The first question should be; “Can I change to a Roth IRA?” Eligibility to elect a rollover from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is limited to those with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of less than $100,000 – single filers and married filing jointly. This limit has not changed, however, it will be eliminated in 2010. What has been changed is how you calculate that $100,000 conversion threshold. Beginning in 2005, required minimum distributions were no longer included in countable income for purposes of the conversion threshold. Thus many more individuals will be able to squeeze under the $100,000 limitation. Other individuals will still be excluded from even considering a Roth rollover. In light of this, individuals with the ability to do so are likely to manipulate their compensation to fit under the current $100,000 limit. An example of this strategy might be as simple as deferring a bonus into the following tax year, or as complex as restructuring contract agreements. Regardless, the availability of a Roth rollover must be confirmed before evaluating the considerations relative to the alternative IRA strategies. OK. Let’s say the income limits of the Roth IRA are no problem. What are some of the considerations in comparing a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA? Conventional wisdom suggests that most taxpayers expect to be in a lower tax bracket when they retire. Financial planning based on this assumption would advise an individual to defer taxes to the greatest extent possible during working years, and ultimately pay the tax bill during retirement at a lower individual rate. Using this logic, converting to the Roth IRA would appear to be a less attractive strategy with taxes paid sooner, based on the individual’s current tax bracket. These days, many people are asking the question; “Will I really be in a lower tax bracket in retirement?” Some important considerations include: What is the likelihood of higher marginal tax rates in the future? Will current deductions for dependents, business expenses and or mortgage interest offset less income in retirement? Will the individual continue to work in retirement, or will they even need the income? Is the objective of the IRA to accumulate assets for heirs? Evaluating the tax impact of the Roth IRA vs. the traditional IRA depends on the assumptions made. Another important consideration in comparing the two alternatives is the manner in which the tax on the distribution from the existing IRA will be paid. For example, a person with a top marginal bracket of 28% is considering rolling over an existing $100,000 IRA to a Roth IRA. When the $100,000 is distributed, the tax due will be $28,000. If the comparison to the existing $100,000 IRA is made with the Roth IRA starting $72,000 ($100,000 - $28,000), the result will be much different than if the Roth IRA starts even with the traditional IRA at $100,000. In addition, if the $28,000 tax is paid from the distribution amount, the 10% premature withdrawal penalty may be applied to that amount. If the tax is paid from the proceeds of the IRA being rolled over, a true apples-to-apples comparison would start the Roth IRA at $72,000. However, if the assumption is made that the tax will be paid from some other source and the Roth IRA starts out at $100,000, the result will likely favor the Roth IRA. This is true even if a calculation is made to consider the opportunity cost of the dollars being used to pay the $28,000 tax due on the distribution from the original IRA.

Clearance Sale: Various types of flooring starting at 50 cents/ sq ft. Laminates, hardwood, cork & more. Windsor Plywood (406) 452-1956. 12-II

There are also several other considerations. The uncertainty of tax rates in the future makes this comparison increasingly complex. In addition, the age of the individual electing to roll over from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is important since the advantage of tax-free distributions from the Roth IRA is leveraged by the length of time the dollars have to grow. The advantage of rolling over to a Roth IRA generally decreases as the age of the individual increases. Another factor is that, while the individual is alive, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules have no impact on a Roth IRA. In summary, there are many variables in the traditional vs. Roth equation that should be evaluated on a situational basis. There are no simple formulas that spell out a clear decision. An individual’s IRA strategy should be integrated with their overall financial and estate plan to achieve optimal results. For many people, the guidance of a professional financial advisor will be a critical aspect in making the decision that is right for them. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

The $2.99 special (as told by a senior citizen) We went to breakfast at a restaurant where the ‘Senior Special’ was two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast for $2.99. “Sounds good,” my wife said. “But I don’t want the eggs.” “Then I’ll have to charge you three dollars and forty-nine cents because you’re ordering a la carte,” the waitress warned her. “You mean I’d have to pay for not taking the eggs?” my wife asked incredulously. “Yes,” stated the waitress. “I’ll take the special then,” my wife said. “How do you want your eggs?” the waitress asked. “Raw and in the shell,” my wife replied. She took the two eggs home and baked a cake.

A mini guide to animal health

- by Dr. Roger Baxter

Identification of Brucellosis Vaccinated Cattle

Brucellosis calfhood vaccinations rely on a legible tattoo for identification. Calves can be vaccinated between 4 and 12 months of age. Veterinarians place the tattoo in the right ear of the heifer along with the orange official brucellosis ear clip commonly referred to as the “bangs tag”. Although it is not specified in the regulations, I prefer to place the tattoo in the middle valley of the right ear. If this tattoo is properly placed here, the tattoo will be legible when the calf reaches maturity and/or is 10-15 years of age. Some of the things that cause poor tattoos are: 1. Ear tags placed in the middle valley of the ear without regard for the brucellosis tattoo. 2. Poor tattoo techniques. 3. Severe cold weather with no warming devices when “bangs vaccinating”. 4. Improper restraining of the calf ’s head. Some states require a legible brucellosis tattoo before the cows are eligible to enter that state for importation. These cows sometimes will be worth as much as $100 or $150 more in some of the states if the cow can qualify for entry. We should alwaystakethe opportunity to see if the tattoo turned out to be bright and legible.

A good time to see this is at pregnancy testing time. If the tattoo is good at that time you can expect it to be good when she is 10-15 years of age. If my tattoo is poor or non- legible I will redo the tattoo free of charge. What does the tattoo mean? There are four symbols–first is a number that determines which quarter of the year the calf was vaccinated. The next symbol stands for the specific type of vaccine used. The third character is the brucellosis shield. The last number is the year in which the vaccination was done. Some things you can do to help have a good legible tattoo is not to put ear tags in the heifer’s right ear. Use the left ear for that. If you must use the right ear to place your own tag please put the tag in the lower valley of the ear next to the heifer’s head. If you place an ear tag in the right ear later in the cow’s life please look at where the bangs tattoo is and avoid that area. Have a good legible tattoo in the right ear so someday you can take advantage of the extra $150.00 for your cow. -Dr. B

Ever had one of “those” days? Or weeks, or months or years, for that matter? The kind where you expend an unbelievable amount of energy and emotion in your day-to-day life, seemingly to no avail. I have a very unscientific and unproven trick I use in my life to “fix” things when they aren’t going “my” way. It’s not an easy trick, but it works for me. I have learned to look OUT. “Those” times are exactly the ones where I’m thinking about only myself, my business, my day and my problems. It’s easy to get into “poor me” mode, especially when other people bring me more to deal with than I want to handle. Referring back to my last article about self-talk, when you focus on what’s going wrong in your life, that’s exactly what you get more of. You can learn to turn it all around, and also implement the same method in your marketing strategies for postive results. Here’s how. First, stop thinking about how bad your day (or month or year) is. True, we can’t make it all go away; but we can stop focusing on the bad stuff, which will help improve our attitude. Second, think about someone else. Then see what you can do to improve their life in even the slightest, most insignificant way. Maybe it’s just a quick phone call to say hello, or to send a card or flowers. This is where the looking OUT part comes in. Get out of your own head and out of your own world for a minute. I have a great friend who told me once, “If we could throw all the world’s problems into a pile and draw new ones out, we’d want our own back.” Considering that what you GO ONLINE TODAY give comes back to you ten-fold, and subscribe to our maybe it’s time to embrace this FREE marketing e-newsletter at www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. philosophy in your marketing as Get useful tips like the ones in well. Do something with your “Marketing Toolbox” plus more business that benefits somebody else. Do something that might great ideas every week! actually cost you time, money or manpower for the sake of some other person, group or organization. There are good reasons for doing so. Not only will it turn around the attitude at your company, but it will also draw you business. And before you come to the conclusion that this seems a little like what I call “predator” marketing, it is exactly the opposite and here’s why. Chances are, your customer is a decent guy. Let’s call him “Jim”. When Jim walks into your place of business, he’s coming for a particular reason. And he expects that you will honestly try to provide that for him. Jim also likes to think he’s doing business with a person of character, and if he finds that not to be true, he probably won’t come back again. He also likes to think you’re not talking to him just for his money, but that you have a genuine interest in your customers or clients as people. If you show him through your business (remember you ARE your business and your business is you) that you are a decent, honest respectable person trying to make the world a better place AND make a living, he’s more likely to continue to do business with you. Jim also likes to contribute any way he can, so if he can do that by supporting your charitable efforts, he will come back to you again and again. Here is a perfect case in point: Yoplait brand yogurt. Yoplait has a tremendous marketing presence due to their support of breast cancer research. If our friend Jim was shopping for yogurt, he would probably choose Yoplait over another yogurt brand, simply because his money will go to a good cause. Even if he doesn’t send in the little pink lids, he likes the idea behind it and wants to support Yoplait. There’s no denying Yoplait has made a great contribution to breast cancer research, but they also reap the benefits of brand name recognition. So go ahead and look outside your own small world. The benefits of helping a neighbor are more than just material. There’s a lot going on out there, and we have a responsibility to give a little back now and then.

Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
