COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

Groundhog’s Day: Celebrate Responsibly Beginning with month number two A groundhog pops out of the blue And as he stands tall With shadows and all Someone pulls out an old twenty two.

A groundhog comes out for his day And, oh, what a price he did pay He stuck up his head No bullets, instead An eagle then snatched up his prey.

There was a farmer named Jim Whose view of a groundhog is grim With a rifle discharge He found it was large It was just a big gopher to him.

Winter is here and in tune A change in the climate is soon Examine the facts Or honor the rats But it might be over by June.

Some want this carnage to stop No more of these rodents will drop They sit there and sing Look forward to spring When they can devour a crop. Two groundhogs are standing together In snow that’s as light as a feather Then they lay dead From a bullet of lead They were fools for predicting the weather.

Care in Your Home-Your Way!

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

StrategieS DeSigneD to Meet Your Financial goalS Close your eyes and visualize your dream vacation or the shiny new car that you’ve always dreamed of having. Sure, looks great! Unfortunately, for many of us the planning stops right there. With a little planning and discipline the likelihood of achieving our goals can be dramatically improved. Consider implementing one, if not all, of the strategies listed below to improve your financial picture.

Self-directed care offers in-home personal care and support services for people who want more options and more control over choosing their services and their caregiver. Individuals who choose self-directed care report a higher level of satisfaction with services and a higher quality of life. Self-directed services are available statewide in Montana, please contact us for more information.

• focused.

Write down your financial goals and objectives and include deadlines. This will help you stay

• Use credit cards as little as possible. Financing your lifestyle with credit cards is a trap. Reach for your checkbook instead. • Payoff your credit cards each month. With the new minimum payment requirements of around 5%, consumers will get out of debt quicker. For example, on a $2,000 credit card bill at 18% interest, paying the former 2% minimum will still leave you paying 30 years from now. The interest will cost you over $5,000 on the $2,000 charge. By making the new 5% minimum payment, you will finish up in about 7 years and the interest will be roughly $811. • Spend a little, but save a little more. As your debts are paid off, save the “extra” cash each month. Many people are tempted to overspend with the “extra” cash. • Keep a savings balance of at least 6 months of expenses. This cash cushion can be used when emergencies do arise instead of charging on credit cards. •

Map out a college savings plan and begin funding early.

• Manage taxes early in the year and look for deductions, credits and deferral of income to reduce your tax bill. The savings on taxes can be used for other goals. • Go for steady, consistent, long-term growth in your investment. By the time you read about a “hot tip” it’s usually cold. • Protect your valuables and income earning potential with appropriate insurance policies including mortgage, life, and disability policies. • Invest for retirement. At best, Social Security will cover only a fraction of the money you will need for retirement. Talk to your financial advisor about preparing for a comfortable retirement. • Create an estate plan. Many people think you must be super wealthy to do estate planning which is not true. Avoiding probate and passing assets to heirs estate tax free, may be the main goals. Your Financial Advisor, CPA and Attorney will be able to assist in reaching all of these goals. As the saying goes, “those that fail to plan, plan to fail”. It’s never too late to begin taking a look at your financial picture and get on board with a real plan for you and your family’s future. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

THE MAGIC BOX

A redneck family from the hills of Alabama were visiting the city and they were in a mall for the first time in their lives. The father and son were strolling around while the wife shopped. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially the two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, “Pa, what’s that?” The father, never having seen an elevator, responded, “Son, I dunno. I ain’t never seen anything like that in my whole life. I ain’t got no idea’r what it is.” While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular number above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. When the walls opened up again, a gorgeous, voluptuous 24-year-old blonde woman stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quitly to his son . . . “Boy, go gitcha Momma.” Thanks to Heather DePriest and Sandy Trieb for sharing!

Antifreeze Emergency

Ethylene glycol (radiator fluid) is a toxic substance that our pets will drink if given a chance. Cats and dogs like to lick up spills off the garage floor or drink it out of containers because of the sweet taste. One teaspoon for a cat or one tablespoon for a dog is enough to be fatal. Signs of antifreeze poisoning depend upon two things – the amount ingested and the amount of time after ingestion. They may appear drunk and uncoordinated and drink lots of water, maybe vomit. The pet may appear to feel better but within a day or two severe depression, vomiting and diarrhea will indicate kidney failure. The kidneys stop producing urine, and toxins normally excreted by the kidney build up resulting in a life threatening situation. T h e best cure is of course

prevention. Wipe up any antifreeze spills and secure a lid on the container containing antifreeze. If ingested get your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Treatment involves preventing absorption from the stomach. Certain drugs can help stop the metabolism of ethylene glycol but treatments are ineffective if left too long and kidney damage has occurred. Antifreeze poisoning is deadly and easily prevented. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that manufacturers of ethylene glycol provide clearer warning labels and implement a means to reduce the palatability to animals in their product. I concur. -Dr. B

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

by Emily Bolles

Montana Winter Fair 2010

It’s that time of year again, folks! The weather has been cold for a while and cabin fever is on the rise. Luckily for Montana and our neighboring states, the Montana Winter Fair is on the horizon, promising a break in the monotony of wintertime. From the Stick Horse Rodeo to Snowmobile Races to the Death by Chocolate competition, this year in Lewistown there is something for everyone! Come mingle with local and out of town vendors, entertainers and friends as communities join to celebrate the 61st Annual Montana Winter Fair! The Montana Winter Fair was originally held in Bozeman, beginning sometime before or during the 1940’s. A committee formed and a name was given to the event, sources say, in 1947. Hosted by a group of livestock and agriculture enthusiasts, the original Bozeman Livestock Show Association, now the Montana Winter Fair, has passed the test of time and continues to be a much-anticipated event in Montana. In 2002 the fair moved to Lewistown and offers events like stock shows, baking contests, arts and crafts on display and for sale, competitions and concerts, to name a few. At the Montana Winter Fair you just might bump into friends and acquaintances, meet the Montana Rodeo queens or enjoy a nice bowl of homemade award-winning chili while learning new crafts. Many of the competitions are open to all ages and several require no entry fee. Participation is encouraged by all! Entry forms along with rules and regulations can be found on the website at www. montanawinterfair.com . As years have passed, the Montana Winter Fair has been flexible to new ideas and growth. Ron Burund makes mention that, “A big first (this year) is the fact we are holding most Winter Fair events downtown Lewistown, rather than the Fergus County Fairgrounds. Events will be held at the Yogo Inn, the Eagles Hall, and the Lewistown Art Center.” He continued with, “This year is also the first for the O-Mok-See, a Thursday evening parade, a Bicycle Cross and broom hockey.” The Yogo Inn will be a hotspot this last week in January: come visit the Photography Exhibits, the Trade Show, and the “Stop and Shop” where vendors will market their products. The Trade Show includes everything from farm equipment to candles, saddles, toys and many more surprises. Come and check out what people are working on! If you have something to display, contact Don Taylor for information. The photography exhibits are being put together by amateur photographers again this year. There will be two classes designated for our young photographers, and separate classes for advanced photographers and novice amateurs. Photo classes all have a winter theme based around the following subjects: landscape, people, blackand-white, wildlife, “What’s it?”, domesticated (plants, animals), special effects (computer-enhanced) and other. It’ll be interesting to see what people captured on film this year. Something to note: the Best-of-Show overall award winners will receive a weekend workshop pass to the Rocky Mountain School of Photography Weekend Workshop which will be held in Helena. It’s always refreshing to see a new angle on our frozen Montana landscape, so be sure to check out the website for entry information, rules and regulations.

The “Stop and Shop” booths have been rented and vendors are preparing their items for display. Come by and check out what’s new in 2010. Whether Christmas shopping for next year, browsing for that “hard to find” item or just checking things out, plan on spending a day at the Yogo Inn. You can split your time between education demonstrations like Wool Spinning and Wood Carving or take in a seminar on photography contest tips and ideas. Wool based events include spinning, weaving and knitting demonstrations along with a period of “show and tell” where everyone is welcome to bring their fiber creations to a fiber auction held at 1:00 Saturday with proceeds benefitting the Montana Winter Fair and Wool Concepts. The Eagles Hall will be the place to take your appetite, curiosity and taste for music. View a Homebrew Demonstration and Tasting--keep in mind tasters must be of legal age. However, “Death by Chocolate” is a competition open to any and all chocolate lovers of all ages, and hosts several categories this year including chocolate cake, chocolate pie, chocolate cookies or bars, chocolate dessert, chocolate candy, or if you’re a young person wanting to compete in the chocolate competition, there is a special youth division for up-and-coming chocolate enthusiasts ready to put their skills on display. There are prizes for all categories. Bring a copy of your recipe and a sample of your favorite chocolate wonderfulness in a disposable container; there is no entry fee for the “Death By Chocolate” competition. Cinnamon rolls and chili will also go before the judges Saturday. Bring your best batch, a dozen rolls or a gallon of your best chili and compete! If you don’t have time to throw anything together, bring a few bucks and your appetite instead. After the competition cinnamon rolls and chili will make an affordable yet hearty lunch for spectators. The fiddling contest and Dutch Oven cooking will be on many visitors’ “things to do” lists in 2010. Come watch teams and solos battle it out crafting main courses to desserts, as well as competing in the classic “meat and potato challenge”. Enjoy savory food and some fancy fiddling for a lunch-time retreat. Some National Champion Fiddlers will be doing the judging this year, and the foot stomping will go most of the day Saturday. Competitors, come early as registration starts at 8:00, and be ready for ballads, waltzes and hoedowns. Come by and visit the Quilt show and sale at the Lewistown Art Center while you’re enjoying the fair. The Lewistown Art Center is hosting the quilt exhibit from January 8th through the 30th. During this time there are competitions for the Best Bed Quilt and the Best Miscellaneous or Crib Quilt. These categories are determined by the size of the piece and there are a variety of acceptable types of quilts included-pieced with a machine, pieced by hand, appliqué done commercially, by hand or by machine, or a group project that the exhibitor participated in are all acceptable. The Miscellaneous or Crib Quilt category includes wall hangings big or small, household items such as table linens or pillows, articles of clothing or actual crib quilts. There is also a youth/beginner category for first-time exhibitors and individuals who have not yet finished high school. Do check out the www.montanawinterfair.com for more specific information on how to register. The Little Belt Snowmobile Club will be adding to the festivities by hosting a bit of friendly snowmobile racing. The races will be non-sanctioned double elimination with trophies for the winners. Again, check out the Montana Winter Fair website for more information and registration forms. Entry fee is $20.00, and sign-up is from 8:00-10:00 with racing starting at 11:00am. The Heartland Riders Drill Team is hosting an O-Mok-See event at the fairgrounds pavilion on Saturday afternoon following noon registration with games starting at 1:00pm. There are separate divisions for youth events and adult events. Some of the scheduled games include the Stake Race, the Ribbon Race, the Key Hole, the Flag Race, and the Boot Race. Saddle up your pony and join the action! If your horses are out to pasture this time of year, there is a place for you in the grandstands! 4-H, FFA and Junior Cattle Breed Association members have been gearing up for their part of the action featuring the Youth All Breeds Heifer Show and the Youth Feeder Steer Show. Come down and support the kids as they show off their projects.

Make your plans for accomodations now. Lewistown has several great places for lodging, and some are listed on these pages. If you plan to bring your camper, keep in mind that reservations are necessary and make them as soon as possible. To reserve a spot for your camper, call the Farigrounds Office at (406)538-8841 or (800)406-8841. Also, while enjoying the activities remember to keep dogs on leashes and out of the exhibit buildings unless, of course, they are a handicapped companion. Contact information and detailed registration information on classes, contests and activities are located on the Montana Winter Fair website, www.montanawinterfair. com. Entry forms, complete registration information and updated schedules can be found there as well. Chase away that cabin fever this year by making the short drive to Lewistown for the 2010 Montana Winter Fair!

FROM THE MARKETING TOOLBOX: I Need “Help”!

by Tricia Kimmel

It’s hard to find good help these days, isn’t it? While over the years I’ve managed to find a great group of people to help me operate my business, I hear this sentiment everywhere I go from all types of business managers. Not only does the work pool seem a little shallow, but sometimes economic conditions don’t always allow us to afford more help even if we can find it. I believe there is some good that can come out of a recession--folks tend to value their job a little more, and may take their work more seriously. However, as is always the case here in Montana, economic “trends” seem to be a little slow getting here, and “job-clutching” is one of those. So, we don’t always have a large pool of applicants when a position comes open. Still, if you’re lucky your business and workload may actually be growing, necessitating the need for more “help”. The inability to hire good employees can be a big growth-deterrent for an up-and-coming company like yours. Tough times call for tough measures, right? Now would be the opportune time to take a good hard look at what skill sets are needed in your business and which ones you or your workers already possess. Even if you are just replacing someone who is leaving, would it be possible to juggle some of that person’s duties with your other workers, allowing your group to grow and expand? Maybe Suzy has been dying for the opportunity to take on more of the accounting work, and is Ted in sales would be a great pick for handling some of Suzy’s managerial responsibilities, since he has prior experience. It’s possible you have a great pool of talent already hired that will fit the bill. Dig out those old resumès and look. And don’t forget to look at your own productivity as well. As the business leader, it’s a good GO ONLINE TODAY idea to “do what you do best, hire out the and subscribe to our FREE marketing e-newsletter at rest”. I know that sounds like a luxury www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. you may feel you can’t afford. You can’t Get useful tips like the ones in “Marketing Toolbox” plus more afford not to if you really want to go big in your business. So what are your great ideas every week! strengths? And, in contrast, what do you find yourself avoiding, procrastinating at, or rushing through? This is where I make a strong case for contract work. Contractors are available for almost every kind of service these days. You can hire sole individuals or small companies for bookkeeping services, professional development, customer service, technical services, maintenance, cleaning. There are even “virtual” office assistants now. The list goes on, and the beauty of it all is you don’t have to provide the pencils, paper, computers, mop buckets or whatever else is needed to do the job, as it’s provided by the company you hire. Depending on the task, these folks may never even set foot in your place of business, and because of their experience, they may do it in a half or quarter of the time. Although not every duty can be outsourced, and there is still a need for on-the-payroll employees for many businesses, there are big benefits to contracting for many of the other services you need. “Contractors” are, after all, business owners themselves, so the right contractor will take a great deal of pride in his or her work. Don’t underestimate the value of a stay-at-home ag mom, for example, who decides to take advantage of today’s technology and start up a business from home providing some needed product or service. That kind of dedication and work ethic can be hard to match. Plus, you usually only pay for the actual work they do, meaning they won’t be standing around on coffee break on your dime. You still should do your research before you contract with an individual or company just as you would if you were hiring an employee, because not every company will be the right fit. Get references, see examples of their work, do the footwork required so there are no surprises. And lay out exactly what is expected on both sides of the table before you enter any binding agreement, of course being careful to follow all state and federal laws regarding contract workers. If you’re asking right now, “What does ANY of this have to do with marketing and business promotion?”, the answer is “everything”. Your team of workers can make or break your business, and the worst part is that it takes you, the business owner or manager, away from what you should be focusing on--developing, growing and promoting your business.

Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
