COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
The Nickname
When newborns pop into this world, Beginning life’s new game, Immediate, without delay, They’re saddled with a name.
Here’s another spectrum. They’ve cast it all aside. They slap on a legal name. They let other folks decide.
Their parents pondered many hours. Was it chaos or affection? Was this done in unity? This job called name selection.
Deciding what, you may ask? This question will be cleared. A nickname that will stick to them Like glue, it is adhered.
Funds were spent on sonograms, If it’s put in ranching terms, Is the child, bull or heifer? The gender, it confirms.
Their Dad explained it readily. His kids were all renamed. There’s Bubba, Al and Kat. There’s Punk and Zeke and Jane.
To muddle up the process, Is it a complicated riddle? To choose two words in several months, You got it, first and middle.
What about your youngest? Then came the Dad’s reply, “He forgets to zip his pants. They call him Dragon Fly.”
Then pronouncing and the spelling, It is the parent’s choice If it’s done in error, Displeasure they will voice.

Money Talks
By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana
BE SURE TO STOCK UP IN YOUR IRA
Retirement statistics show that today’s Americans are enjoying longer lives and cite inflation as retirees’ greatest economic worry. For that reason a fixed monthly income stream may no longer be sufficient to fund a satisfactory lifestyle during retirement years. To protect against inflation, the ability to grow assets and retain the purchasing power of money is essential. Based on historical performance, that’s where stocks may offer an advantage. By offering a combination of capital growth and dividend income, stocks offer the ability to potentially offset the eroding effects of inflation. However, there can be no assurance that past performance will guarantee future results. Few investment vehicles are of a longer-term nature then an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and no other financial asset has historically offered a higher return over the longer term than common stocks. Ibbotson Associates, an oft-cited research firm, reports that for the 10 year period from 1998 through 2007, small stocks offered an annual total return of 10.6 percent and large stocks offered an annual total return of 7.3 percent compared to 5.9 percent for long-term government bonds, and 3.5 percent for Treasury bills. If you reinvest dividends within your IRA, returns can be considerably greater. Using Ibbotson’s figures, $1 invested in a large cap broad index of U.S. common stocks on Jan. 1, 1995 through Dec. 31, 2005 with all dividends reinvested would have grown to over $2.00. Remember, dividends and capital gains accumulate in your IRA on a tax-deferred basis. If you sell stock in your IRA for a gain, no tax is due on that gain until you retire and begin distributions, provided the gain is reinvested back into your IRA. Diversification—widely accepted as the best way to minimize the risk of investing and achieve reasonable returns—is easy to achieve with the vast array of stocks available among hundreds of industries. Moreover, stocks can be easily liquidated to take profits or reduce losses, unlike many other investments that may lock-in investors for a particular period of time. A diversified high-quality portfolio of stocks can offer the IRA investor both capital appreciation and dividend income. Of course, investment decisions should be made only upon a full consideration of the particular financial situation. Consult with an investment professional about the possibilities of equities within your portfolio. Past performance does not guarantee future results. There is no assurance this trend will continue. The market value of securities fluctuates and you may incur a profit or loss. This analysis done not include transaction costs and tax considerations. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks. US Government Bonds are issued and guaranteed as to the timely payment of principal and interest by the federal government. Treasury Bills are certificates reflecting short term (under one year) obligations of the US Government. A mini guide to animal health
- by Dr. Roger Baxter
CoCCidiosis in Cattle
Coccidiosis is commonly a disease of young cattle (i.e. 1 mo. - 12 mo. old) but it can affect older cattle, too. This disease is caused by microscopic parasites (E. zuernii, E. bovis and E. auburnensis). It is often associated with confinement of animals and high moisture. Typical signs of coccidiosis are diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight loss. More severe cases result in bloody diarrhea. Death may occur during the acute period or later from secondary complications. The way we confirm a diagnosis is by finding oocysts on fecal samples. Affected a n i m a l s should be
isolated and treated. The population density of affected pens should be reduced. All feed and water supplies should be high enough off the ground to avoid fecal contamination. Mass medication of feed and water supplies may be necessary to prevent new cases and minimize the effects on the rest of the cattle. There are coccidiostats available that can be used to prevent and treat coccidiosis. A proactive role in management of establishing effective parasite control is best.

Did you know that Montana has a DINOSAUR TRAIL? We’re familiar with trails made by wildlife and domestic animals, but dinosaurs? You bet! The Montana Dinosaur Trail was created five years ago, in 2005, to inform the public of the world class dinosaur exhibits on display across the state. In 2007, the trail, along with its’ funding partners were honored as the Montana Partnership Tourism Partnership of the Year by Governor Schweitzer and the Montana Advisory Council. There are 15 stops in 12 communities across the state on The Montana Dinosaur Trail. The stops include Ekalaka, Glendive, and Jordan in eastern Montana; Fort Peck, Malta, Chinook, Havre, and Rudyard along the hi-line; Bynum and Choteau in north central Montana; and finally Harlowton in the central part of the state and Bozeman in the south west. For $5.00 you can purchase a Prehistoric Passport at any of the facilities on The Trail. Each passport contains a section of “Fun Fossil Facts, a section for field notes and a place for a “dino stamp. You can get your passport stamped as you visit each facility and when you have all 15 stamps you will receive a gold seal, a certificate of completion and a special Montana Dinosaur Trail Prehistoric Passport T-shirt. For more information, check out www. mtdinotrail.org. When I was asked to write this article, I contacted Dixie (Cowan) Stordahl of Loring, Montana, who, along with her sister and three of their grandsons, completed The Montana Dinosaur Trail last summer. Dixie posted a blog, “Driving with Dixie, about the trip on www. russell.visitmt.com. When I asked her why she became so interested in dinosaurs, she made a reference about “old teachers – Me? Couldn’t be! Anyway, in her own words Dixie answers the question . . . “I became interested in dinosaurs when I went to a camp at Egg Mountain with two friends in 1993. I found my own dinosaur bone which the staff let me excavate and jacket. After that, I volunteered at the Phillips County Museum helping to set up their displays and went digging about 3 times a month during the summer for five years or so. Then I started working part time at the Phillips County Museum. When the Paleo part of the museum moved out to a different building, I went with them and have been working with the Judith River Foundation ever since. The last four years I have been the manager of the Dinosaur Field Station and then the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum. If you are interested in dinosaurs and keeping them near where they were unearthed then you should become a member of the Judith River Foundation. We are a private nonprofit organization whose mission is to curate and prepare paleontology resources for use in educational programs, scientific research and interpretive displays in support of the advancement of knowledge and for the benefit of all people. Single memberships cost $25; Family memberships are $100; a Supporting Membership is $250 and a Sustaining Membership, $500. We are not supported by the government or any university. We have done some grant writing, but most of our budget is from fundraisers, memberships and donations. So, come along for the ride as we go “Driving with Dixie:

“My sister, Debbie Richau, suggested we take the grandkids on the dinosaur trail and I thought it a great idea – just us—the grandkids and the grannies‌no parents! We had to set up some guidelines first. The parents had to agree to the trip for the kids and it was decided that just the oldest three should go – three boys, ages 13, 12 and 6. Debbie’s chore was to get a vehicle to hold five of us plus luggage comfortably so she rented a 7 passenger van. My responsibility was to make sleeping arrangements. I called the Comfort Inn 800 number and reserved rooms for three of the nights. Another choice was the Fort Peck Hotel, a rustic building built in 1934 when the dam was being built. I thought the kids should experience some old time feelings. I also was in charge of dividing up the drive so the days weren’t terribly long. Debbie thought that we should not go to Ekalaka, Jordan or Harlowton, but I argued that if we are to “do the trailâ€? then we needed to do all the facilities. Since I work at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum and am familiar with the Dino trail I know how important each place is. So she capitulated. At our spring meeting of the Montana Dinosaur Trail I mentioned that my sister and the grandkids were planning a trip through the Dinosaur Trail this summer. Gayle Fisher from Russell country thought it a great way to get some publicity for the MDT if I would be willing to have interviews with newspapers, radio stations and maybe even a TV station on the way.

Our first stop was Ekalaka, at the Carter County Museum. The drive from Billings was beautiful. When we arrived, Warren White and his assistant Gwen, were “Johnnie-on-the-spot” to welcome us, stamp our passports and show us around. They thanked us for choosing them for our first stop. It was an important stop because the Carter County Museum was the first place in Montana to exhibit a dinosaur. In fact, I saw it when I was in college in 1969. It is in a different building now with plenty of other historical displays. Debbie agreed that it was very much worth the time to travel the scenic roads to get there. Next stop was Glendive, at the beautiful and stark Makoshika State Park. The Makoshika Visitor Center is impressive with the new exhibits. One interesting display explained how Makoshika was made. The fossil exhibits were authentic with a small replica of a dig right in the building. In downtown Glendive is the Makoshika Dinosaur Museum which has a “habitat” for the fossils that they have on display. The kids thought it was like a “forest”. All the displays were fashioned by the family who runs the museum and volunteer workers. There is a lab on site where the interns were sculpting several whales from Styrofoam. I think these whales are models of several species that are extinct and will eventually be hung from the ceiling in the ocean display. The city of Glendive has embraced the dinosaur business with many signs on buildings depicting dinosaurs and several wrought iron signs. Also the town has Dinosaur flags in red and white. What else for the home of the “Red Devils”!? The trip to Jordan and the Garfield County Museum was beautiful as the terrain changed from rolling hills to sections of exposed sedimentary layers. Sheep grazed by the road and herds of cattle roamed in large pastures. In the Garfield County Museum, the stygimoloch skull was displayed along with many other fossils for which that area is known. The many historical displays were interspersed with the fossils. There was even a collection of women’s old hats and gowns from eras gone by. The town has embraced the dinosaur business with several dinosaur statues around the town and the restaurant/gas station advertises a tryoursoupitsyummysaur. Beneath the sign are the famous dueling dinosaurs that Phipps and Marrow excavated near Jordan. A huge T-rex greets you as you walk into the Fort Peck Interpretive Center and Museum. The auditorium offers several movies on a variety of subjects about Fort Peck. The native animal displays and the fish aquariums are a hit with most people. In the touch and feel room are furs of different mammals, teeth and other information. A spotting scope is trained on the water to view the many different birds of the area. Fort Peck Paleontology, Inc. is a lab where they do the preparation of fossils, molding and casting. They have replicated a cave bear and, of course, the Peck’s Rex. FPPI is different from any of the other facilities in Montana on the trail because everything that they have is lab . . . There are two wonderful stops in Malta. The Phillips County Museum is full of history of the area, samples of Montana rocks and minerals, artifacts of prehistoric people, many newly updated exhibits of northern Montana native Americans, and historical displays of the outlaws who were responsible for infamous tales of mayhem. And, of course, they have DINOSAURS! Elvis, the Brachylophosaurus, is lying in state and the Albertosaurus is ready to pounce on an unsuspecting tourist! Across the parking lot is the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum where several Brachylophosaurus specimens are exhibited along with the first stegosaurus in Montana and the first saurapod… probably a brand new species. The invertebrate display of ocean animals is very well exhibited. In the yard is a dig pit for the youngsters to try their hand at excavation. The Blaine County Museum in Chinook, just 70 miles west of Malta, has Gorgosaurus and Ankylasaurus fossils from the area in the newly revamped Dinosaur Hall. Blaine County Museum has a variety of resources about Native Americans, history of the battles at the Fort Assiniboine, and dinosaur information for all ages. Next on the trail was the H. Earl Clack Museum in Havre at the Holiday Village Mall. Here they were in the middle of a promotion to “Name the baby lambesaur”. We all voted for our favorite name and haven’t heard yet what they decided to name it. Some tiny fossils were displayed along with several eggs. It was amazing that the fossils were recognized as fossils. They were so small. Right behind the mall, the Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump site is intriguing with the layers and layers of buffalo bones and the interpretation boards. The Rudyard Depot Museum, The Museum of the Rockies outreach, has an extensive network of buildings for antique machinery, gadgets for the house and shop, and the Dinosaur display. It was the only place where we saw pteranodons, but the Rudyard Depot Museum is

known for its oldest sorehead, the Gryposaurus, which was found nearby. In Bynum we saw the longest dinosaur displayed in the smallest building. The Seismosaurus is 137 feet long and 23 feet high at the hips. The crew at the Two Medicine Dinosaur Center did a great job of curling the neck and tail and now tourists can walk under the rib cage, look up and get a chill thinking about the size of the animal. Also on display are the first baby dinosaur bones of the Maiasaur and egg shell pieces collected from a nesting site near by. Right next door is a fantastic rock shop where a person can purchase all kinds of crystals, slabs of rocks or minerals. At the Old Trail Museum in Choteau, Maiasaura and Einosaurus skulls with the varying ages of the specimens shows the different sizes of the fossils as the animals were growing. The Einosaurus is full size model, fleshed out on one side and the fossils showing on the other. This was very impressive. Picnic tables are even nestled in the yard among several models of dinosaurs so you have company as you eat your lunch! The Upper Musselshell Museum in Harlowton boasts the avaceratops along with several other pieces of dinosaurs. They also have an impressive wall of trains upstairs which is a new display. In their museum local people “buy a room” and can either be responsible to put in an exhibit or have an exhibit put in by someone else. The final stop on the trail was the Museum of the Rockies. We got our passports stamped for the last time and received a gold seal with a coupon for our trail shirts. The Museum of the Rockies has wonderful displays of the horns and beaks of the ceratopsians. One of the “megarooms” was all about the inside of the earth. The main thing that sticks with me is the kid friendly activities and “touch me” displays. All of the facilities on the trail have significant dinosaur exhibits, are nonprofit or university based. Nearly all of the facilities are operating on a bare bones budget, and most are historical museums with the dinosaur displays.”
A big thank you goes out to Dixie for sharing her experiences on The Trail with all of us and thank you, too, to her sister, Debbie, for suggesting the trip. It sounds fun as well as educational. Make plans to visit some or all of these facilities while traveling some of this wonderful state’s back roads. You can start your journey at www. mtdinotrail.org.
DINO TRAIL TIDBITS
* It took just two months for 15 Montana Dinosaur Trail Passport holders to complete a nearly 1,500 mile trek visiting all fifteen trail facilities and receiving 5th Anniversary “Dino Prize” gift baskets as a reward! The 5th Anniversary Trail promotion was announced May 2009 by trail officials and First Lady Nancy Schweitzer. By the second week in July – exactly two months later – the 15th completed passport was submitted. * Montanans were well represented among the completed passport holders. Thirteen state residents from across Montana – Corvallis, Stevensville, Helena, Columbus, Billings and Loring (north of Malta) – received “Dino Prize” gift baskets with memorabilia from each of the 15 trail facilities. Two Sun Prairie, WI, residents also completed the 1500 mile trail through eastern and central Montana in 2009 and were awarded a gift basket. * In 2009, the Fort Peck Interpretive Center, Havre’s H. Earl Clack Museum and Glendive’s Makoshika State Park reported visitor numbers up over the previous year. The Two Medicine Dinosaur Museum in Bynum is holding steady with last year, while the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum in Malta, Glendive’s Makoshika Dinosaur Museum, Rudyard’s Depot Museum and the Old Trail Museum in Choteau are reporting lower visitor numbers this year compared to last. * In 2008, almost 268,000 visitors traveled the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Just over a third of those visitors were from outside Montana. * The Phillips County Museum reports that this year’s “Dino Days” in Malta is scheduled for June 4-5, 2010. Join the fun on Friday as guest speaker, Arch Ellwein, does an impersonation of Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt was the first president of the Montana Historical Society. There will also be an unveiling of a new fossil exhibit at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum. Saturday’s events include breakfast from 7am-9am at the Phillips Co. Museum, speaker, Arch Ellwein, “Dinosaur Hunter” 11 am and 3pm at the city park, and City Hall will serve dino burgers. Visit vendor booths and kids can participate in activities especially for them. In the evening there will be a pitchfork fondue followed by a dance and a dance contest.
